Song Before: Heroes (live) – David Bowie
intro
From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Spring is bringing wave after wave of flowers. The lilacs opened up this week.
1.) Look At The Lilacs – Binger
2.) Push Me Over – Johnny Wanser
3.) Children Of The Stars – Madaila
4.) Freeway – Totally Submerged
Submerged play all over Vermont all the time. If you like that song, keep your eyes open. I love that Madaila song. Mike Luoma just sent Johnny’s music my way. I thought it would go nice with Madaila. Great song from Binger. OK, here is the next song on Engine.
Kids will be back in Vermont for a show Saturday night at Zenbarn. The Druids will be at Light Club Lamp Shop next Tuesday. I love that Luddites song. Great song from Kelly. OK, this next band will be all over Vermont in July and August. They will be playing shows at local libraries to raise funds and awareness for how they are becoming local community centers. They also have a new album coming soon.
9.) Today Is Mine – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
10.) Real World – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
11.) Enemy – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
12.) Ba Doom! – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
I love the line about how because of you I’m a feminist. That always gets attention when they play it live. Those are all great songs and you can hear them in a library near you soon. The Book Of Zoo is coming to you. OK, so last night I went out to The Monkey House and lucked into part of a set by a band from Albany.
Those last two will be at Radio Bean on Friday. Another band is playing too but I’ll mention them later. Doubtfire put on a great show last night and Bullets were a total joy. I’m so glad I caught them. This next band will be at ArtsRiot tomorrow.
I love that Phil song from the new Party Music album. Classic from Zola. 8084 have been playing for many years and will rock Higher Ground on Saturday. So Mike Luoma has been helping WBKM sound great and has been doing a show at noon. He took today and Friday off to follow his other passion. He writes science fiction novels and graphic novels and is at Balticon this weekend. I’d like to dedicate this to Mike.
Those are all incredible songs. OK, let’s take a nice long ride in the rain.
25.) Rainy Alley – Totally Submerged.
26.) CO2 You Later – The Tsunamibots
The bots will be at the Bean tomorrow too. My robot overlords expect your presence. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Hip Boots – Deep Purple
intro
From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. We have a nice small city in Burlington but most of Vermont is rural. Let’s begin tonight by taking a ride in the country.
David and the band will be all over Vermont this summer supporting local libraries. Cool song from Mal. If you think having your singer put up a video of her singing Happy Birthday to me will get your song played, you are correct. Thanks Cooie DeFrancesco! Love your band. We started off with QT who evolved out of Zola Turn. OK, here is the next song on Engine.
I love that song from the new Party Music album. Admiral will be at Light Club Lamp Shop for a one night residency tomorrow. The Surfers will be at The Monkey House on Saturday. Great song from Kelly. This next band are at the Monkey House tonight.
Suns and Ghastly will be at the Monkey tomorrow. Doubt will be at the Monkey next Wednesday. This next band will be at the Monkey tomorrow too.
13.) Chasing The Wagon – Secret Family
14.) Screwball – Screaming Broccoli
15.) Automatic Sweetheart – Hammydown
16.) Muskrat Love – Cave Bees
That’s such a fun song form the Bees. Hammy are super fun. Broccoli rocked us a long time ago. Great stuff from Luke Adam‘s new band. OK, let’s keep rocking.
Cool new song form Bison. Great classic from Dave. Rabbit are so cool they did a cover of the Claws song in their set at Waking Windows. OK, let’s keep rocking.
My friend Ted Jacobites works on ships all over the world. This morning he sent a picture from a port in Lithuania so I had to play the Hana song. Cricket are so lovely. Great songs from Kat and Madaila. It’s getting warm and the days are getting longer and it’s time to celebrate.
I love it when Sarah plays that song. On Bowie’s Birthday Lauren Costello did a tribute including that lovely piece of music and that great story. Cool songs form Andriana and Maryse. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I really want to thank Ryan Cohen for making us sound so great and smooth. OK, Let’s dive in and play a ton of sweet songs.
I think that is my favorite Mountain song, but I say that about so many of their new songs. Great song from Francis who put on a ferocious show at Waking Windows. I love the Vetica song and Rabbit rocked WW hard too. OK, here is the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. It’s the title song.
I missed Clever at WW, but fortunately, so did the lightning. Great song form Hana. It was cool to run into Eoin and Dave at WW. Great song from Kelly. This next song always fills me with hope.
It was great to see Druids at WW. I love that Swale song. Same goes for the Hero song. Sean from Telephone and Druids may have a show coming up in the near future with Matt Hutton so we may get to hear some Telephone songs live soon. I love this next song.
I think Ruckzuck are coming back in a couple of months. I can’t wait to see them again. Lovely is such a beautiful song. Great songs from Peter and Carol. All of those are from Robot Dog sessions and the first three feature the studio piano. OK, we’re running late but I’m going to play one more set. This song just fills me.
I had a great time seeing music a couple of Saturday’s ago at Cork Wine Bar & Market. The day began with the memorial service for my mom at the Williston Federated Church. After the service, and spending time with friends and family, my brother Ken and I thought we could use a little music.
We took the long drive to Waterbury and finally found the place. David Rosane was onstage singing and we were enthusiastically greeted by Jennifer Grossi and Don Sinclair. David played songs about no scary monsters and burying them and rocked out a nice Freeway. Soon after that Jen and Don took the stage and David Rosane & The Zookeepers were complete. They played a song about having a merry effing Christmas and one about having a fascinating life. They played a cool version of Grandma then played one about going home. Urban Country was great and so was the one about Devils and Angels. They played a song about telling the children what I’ve done and one that asks where my magic carpet is, before I hit the ground. This City was fun and Judgement Day kept me from being afraid. Ba Doom made me a feminist (and a lot of other ists) and Stardust For Dessert sent the usual chills. Hope In The Dark shone a powerful light and Sugar & Cream was sweet. They sang of a world with no enemies and one about my life out west. The Real World was cool and Break A Leg had a nice swagger. My Suicide was poignant and Today Is Mine took a hopeful turn. Waking up on the sunny side was nice and Paris Is For Love made me smile. They closed with something about liquid sunshine.
We hung out and chatted for a bit then took the long drive home. It was a long and beautiful day.
I had a great time seeing music a couple of Saturday’s ago at The Monkey House. It was one of those nights where the main band seemed cool and the opener would be great, so off I went.
I got in and settled and Zeus Springsteen started to rock. They had a huge sound and I think Chris Farnsworth had a new keyboard effect for his guitar. I didn’t know the opener, but loved it. It may be called Ossuary. They rocked out Rental and took a nice prog turn in the middle of What‘s Inside A Thing. Landlord and Signal Loss were fun then they pulled out a cover of Madman Across The Water. Your Funeral was cool and they talked about the video they did for it. They rocked out a couple more and closed the night with Lights Of Montreal. It was a glorious show.
Up next Edensong took the stage. They played a set of classic prog rock. They opened with a huge long song that followed a fun path. The whole set followed that vibe and I was in a happy place. They sang about the sixth day and asked us to fill in the blanks. They played a rocking fun song that took a lovely mellow turn then rocked hard. It should have ended the set but one guy asked if they would play more. They played a song about a cold city that should have ended the night. The guy asked for another and they played another 10 or 15 minute epic piece and I loved every moment. They finally called it a night and I took the lovely walk home with a smile on my face and epic song journeys in my heart.
I had a great time seeing music a few Monday’s ago at Radio Bean. It was one of those nights where I got out of work, had time to grab a bite to eat, then took the walk down to see the show.
I had heard good things about Father Figuer and wanted to check them out. I got in settled and showtime was upon us. They lit into the first song with a stark solo guitar that slid into a moody dirge before it began to rock. They built it up for a bit, then eased off for a bit, then built it into a nice rock freakout. As it played through, it eased off into a quiet ending. I was hooked. The rest of the set stayed in that wonderful heavy zone. The second song was slow and sludgy. The third was mellow and ended with a lush haze. The packed room was pleased as they alternated between slow and medium paced rock songs with occasional over the top guitar work. They closed the set with a nice rocker that had a rip out the sky solo towards the end.
I didn’t stay long after they finished, and took the lovely walk home. It’s so great to know that there are new bands starting up in our town all the time. I cant wait to see where they go from here.

Song before Changes – David Bowie
intro
From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to begin by welcoming Mike Luoma to WBKM. It was fun to chat with him earlier today. He’s helping with the programming and asked me to put together a file with some of the greatest local songs. I put 178 songs into it, but need to add more. Here are four of them.
Sarah’s from Massachusetts but visits us often. I wanted one of her songs to highlight all of the New England bands who come to town a lot. Telephone grew out of the legendary local band Envy. That song is so sweet. 1881 are just amazing. Let’s Whisper always fill my heart with smiles. OK, here’s a treat for us all. Let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for some live music from a wonderful band.
5.) Raising The Dead – Carraway
6.) St Patrick’s Day – Carraway
7.) Kool – Carraway
8.) Time To Save The World – Carraway
I want to thank the band for being so amazing. Thanks to Ryan Cohen for making us sound great. Carraway are playing Saturday at Higher Ground with lovelytheband. OK, this weekend all of Winooski will be taken over by hundreds of bands in a giant festival called Waking Windows. The rest of tonight’s show will be filled with a few of the local bands who will perform. Let’s begin with Kelly Ravin who’s album Engine is the one I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week.
The girls will rock the Rotary stage in the middle of it all on Friday night. Barbacoa and Lowell will be on the main stage. Kelly will be at McKee’s. These next bands will play Friday night too.
The Breaks will be at Water Works on Friday. Binger will be at Four Quarters Brewing. Carol will be at Scout & Co and Wren will be at Lucky Cloud. These next two bands will play Friday night at Last Stop Sorts Bar.
Cancer will be at Lucky Cloud on Saturday and it’s nice to have that classic ’90’s band back in action, now and then. Francis will play the main stage on Saturday. This next band will be at Lucky Cloud on Saturday.
Anais will be at the Methodist Church on Sunday. Swale will be there on Saturday. Francesca will be at Scout & Co on Saturday. Bengoy and the Shakers will be at Lucky Cloud on Saturday. Well, that’s all the time we have tonight. I could do another hour and not get to all of the local bands who will play Waking Windows. Lots of national bands will be coming to town too so it should be completely amazing. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I had a great time seeing music a few Saturdays ago at The Monkey House. I’ve been a fan of Doom Service for a while and was excited to see them and buy their brand new album.
It was a long work day, but I made it through and got home and ate dinner. I took the lovely long walk to Winooski and got in and settled. Kitten of the Sea took the stage and started to rock. The had an epic opening sound that fell into a solid rock song. The music had a nice indie bounce to it and the lyrics were about how I promise you things will be better next time. The second song rocked nicely too and Meghan’s vocals were strong and clear. I think it was about bleeding. At that point they had set a nice tone. They mixed that up on the third song when bassist Avogadro Jones began to sing. His voice was cool and the music took a dark heavy punk turn that went through many changes. It was a prog punk song and was just great. I think it was about alienation. Megan returned to the vocals as the band rocked out songs about wishing I had never met you and my heart. Jones sang another that was heavy, though not quite as proggy. It was about something in my dreams. They sang a fun short punk song then sang one about codependency, enabling and about Joey dying. They closed their debut set with a song about how just because it’s normal it doesn’t mean it’s not wrong. I loved their show and would see them again in a heartbeat.
Up next, Sink or Swim hit us hard with their classic old school punk sound. They rocked a couple of songs that included one about my beautiful world without you. A short classic hardcore song was fun and the whole set was fast loud and glorious. They played so hard they blew one of the guitar amps but rocked the show to a close anyway. They were great.
Sink Or Swim
Doom Service hit the stage and unleashed their full new album on us. All of the songs on The Uncanny Doom Service are fun and they sounded great in the full room. Jurrassic Bark was especially cool as was the song about The X-Files called Nothing Important. All of the songs have nice meoldies and rock really hard. They wrapped up the album with Coast To Ghost then took a short break. They came back for a cover of Hey Jealousy then welcomed us to the Hellmouth. They rocked out a couple more then called it a night. I was elated.
At some point my friend Nathan Curtis stopped in so we bought the album and some merch and I caught a ride home. What a great night
