Song before: Accidents Will Happen – Elvis Costello

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last week had a ton of great shows and this week looks the same. We’re lucky to have so much great music and so many great events happening all the time. Let’s begin tonight with an artist who played live on the show last week.

1.) Dig Him – Andriana Chobot
2.) Child – Clare Byrne: Song and Dance
3.) Mon Ange – Francesca Blanchard
4.) Paris Is For Love – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

I saw David and the band play a lovely version of that song last week at American Flatbread Burlington Hearth. They are playing Sunday night at Radio Bean about 10pm. Hopefully, they will start a couple of minutes late so everyone can watch Game Of Thrones first. I haven’t caught up with Francesca in a while but still love her music. Thanks to Ted Looby for turning me on to Clare’s music. Great song from Andriana. OK, here is the next song on Action.

5.) 8 Long Years – 1881
6.) Skeleton Star – The Cush
7.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
8.) Felon – SWALE

That’s another great song from Swale’s new album There’s No One Here. Great song from Milton from his album You Are What You Pretend To Be. That’s a new song from The Cush from the Dreamy Life Records compilation Group Therapy Volume 3 and it’s always exciting to play new music from them! Great song from 1881. This next artist just released an EP called Pizzaface and here is one of the songs.

9.) Automatic Sweetheart – Hammydown
10.) The Feeling Is Strange – Binger
11.) Low Flying Planes – Chin Ho
12.) Shy Spiders – Villanelles

Spiders is already one of the great Vermont songs. Planes is a classic from the ’90’s. Binger have lots of shows coming up including the The Skinny Pancake Burlington on Saturday. 13.) Art Of Vandalay – Sad Turtle
14.) Bullet – REDadmiral
15.) Last Love – Myra Flynn Music
16.) You’ve Got Problems – Kat Wright

Great song form Kat Wright and the band. Myra could be anywhere in the world but comes back to town now and then to enchant us with her lovely music. I had a great time seeing music recently at Friends of Jim’s Basement. They put on a lot of punk underground shows featuring local and touring bands and I like to be there when I can. It was a lovely warm, but not super hot, Saturday. I got out of work at 4:30, hung out at home for a while, then took the happy walk to King st. I said a couple of hello’s then headed down to the basement. There were a lot of kids there and I found a place to stand a bit out of the way.

Greaseface are three high school kids playing guitar, bass, drums and were dressed like bandits with striped shirts and masks. The music was fast and loud and fun. They opened the show with a surf rock noir feel that fell into a classic punk feel. The bass player shouted the lyrics as the guitar played strong melodies and sweet leads while the drummer was constantly over the top. The second song had a bombastic intro then settled into a riff where all three shouted the words into the air. The whole nine song set was full of energy with moshing in the room and moshing by the band. They sang songs about steak dinners and they sang a song about Home Alone from the perspective of the burglars. They rocked hard from beginning to end and it made me feel good to know a new generation of people are taking music so seriously.

REDadmiral pic by Tim Lewis

Up next was a band I had not caught up with in a while. REDadmiral had changed things up from the two guitars, bass, drums band I was expecting to a two acoustic guitars, a beat box, an electric stand up bass and a guy who played a never ending series of odd and fun percussion instruments. Between the change in overall sound and the country feel of the first two songs it took me a little bit of time to settle in. They were so much mellower than the last band. The third song of the set was Bullet which I knew reasonably well and it was fun to see where my expectations differed from the new reality. The next song, Goner, actually sounded a lot like it did on the album and set began to jell for me. Many of the kids stayed and stood and listened quietly. The whole nine song set was cool, completely not what I expected, and one of the many reasons I love to go out and see music.

Shred Flintstone pic by Tim Lewis

Shred Flintstone have such a fun name that I had high expectations. The first few notes of the set fulfilled them all as they rocked hard with a huge cool sound. The New Jersey band played punk rock with inviting melodies. The bass player is steady and solid as the guitar player and drummer assault their instruments. The kids in the room moshed and had fun as the band played killer song after killer song. I loved every moment of their eight song set.

Ellen Degenerates pic by Tim Lewis

Ellen Degenerates closed the night as a guitar bass drums trio playing mellower rock that veered a little towards jazz. All of their songs got into a nice groove and floated for a while but still had a rock edge. The only song I knew was Sri Lanka but I liked all of the songs. Most of the crowd had stayed to check them out and seemed appreciative.

After the set I said goodnight to Brian LaClair and James Lockridge and took the lovely walk home.

Joe’s been playing around lately in his new band a.m. rejoice which I seem to keep missing. It’s hard to miss Submerged since they play all around Vermont all the time. 23.) Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT

Song before: Morrigan – Children in Paradise

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve got lots of great new music to play tonight but let’s begin with one of Vermont’s absolute treasures.

1.) Scattered Birds – Aaron Flinn
2.) Faded Movie Reel – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
3.) Wooden Heart – SWALE

That’s the next song from Kat’s album By My Side that I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. That’s a brand new song from Swale from their upcoming album There’s No One Here. Wow, what a beautiful song, and what about those horns? The Jeremy song was from the interview and recording we did a few weeks back at Robot Dog Studio. Great song by Aaron, who is a great guy, a great singer, a great songwriter and a fantastic guitar player. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful person in our community. Speaking of wonderful people in our community, this next band have been playing around for a while but don’t have anything recorded. 6.) Just Another Day – The Nancy Druids
7.) By Design – The Nancy Druids
8.) The Space Between – The Nancy Druids

I love the songs and the over the top guitar playing and can’t thank Ryan and the Druids enough for playing that. Also, I brought my brother Ken along and he had a great time watching it all happen. OK, let’s play some more rock and roll.

17.) Journals – Senders
18.) This Ain’t The Summer Of Love – The Contrarian
19.) Blind Pigs – ROUGH FRANCIS

I was listening to Pigs the other day and the imagery of burn and summer of love made me want to play those three together. Great song from Senders. OK, It’s my job to play local music but I just have to cheat now and then. There’s this french prog rock band called Children In Paradise who have been captivating me lately. The singer is about to release her solo album and is starting a crowdfunding campaign on April 1st. Since I play her music before and after my show all the time I thought I’d toss in one of her new songs.

21.) Who Are These Gods? – Dam Kat
22.) Be Like Ryan – The Mountain Says No
23.) Counting On A Ghost – Elephants of Scotland
24.) Freeway – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

Tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM can be heard from our Facebook page link, or over the air. It will run from 9-11pm this evening and will go as follows:

Song before: No Plan – David Bowie

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to begin by thanking the wonderful Higher Ground for sponsoring our station. With the upcoming change in Presidents a lot of us are feeling anxiety. Hopefully, tonight’s show will confront that anxiety and help steel our nerves for what is to come.

1.) Two Weeks (’til The End Of The World) – Grand
2.) I know Right – The Mountain Says No
3.) Six Month Winter – Suburban Samurai
4.) Lion Tamer – Carraway

Now that the lions will soon be in charge we are all going to need to learn to become lion tamers, in a loving caring way. Great new song from Suburban. They played at The Monkey House last night. That’s a great new song from Mountain from their upcoming album Golden Landfill. That’s an early mix but sounds so cool. Great song from Grand. OK, let’s play the next song on Shovel Down, the album I’m playing all the way through song after song week after week.

5.) The Violent Strain Of My Broken Heart – Seth Yacovone Band
6.) The Mime – Joe Adler
7.) The Road – Anders Parker
8.) Machu Picchu – The Mountain Says No

Wow, they really had to climb the heights to create that one. Thanks Mountain! Anders played an amazing show at ArtsRiot last Friday. His version of that song was stunning. It’s pretty great on album too. Joe played at Radio Bean a week ago Monday and reminded me how great that song is. Great song from Seth. OK, with lots of fake news about and an incoming President who speaks in vague generalities and when he does cite facts, is usually wrong, it’s pretty scary and makes this song sound appropriate.

9.) Barbie’s Plastic Army – REDadmiral
10.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit
11.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
12.) Get Out Of Your Own Way – Kelly Ravin

Great song from Kelly’s new Bonneville album. He and his band the Welterweights opened for Anders last Friday. Doubtfire played at the Monkey last night. Rabbit nicely sing about the countdown to meltdown. Sadly appropriate song from Admiral. OK, here’s another Anders song. He wrote it about the W Bush years but is seems it will be appropriate again soon.

13.) Jackbooted Thugs (Have All The Best Drugs) – Anders Parker
14.) You Say You’re Alive – The Mountain Says No
15.) Devil’s Right Hand – Swillbillie
16.) 8 Long Years – 1881

Great new song from 1881’s Action EP. Hopefully, it will be four. Swillbillie will play at Nectar’s on Saturday. Another stunning new Mountain song. What a great rocker from Anders. OK, let’s play another new Mountain song. I’ve been waiting a long time to be able to play this one.

17.) Glazerbeam – The Mountain Says No
18.) Waterlanding – SWALE
19.) American Proxy – The Hero Cycle
20.) The Possibility Shop – The Red Telephone

No matter what happens in the next few years, there will be tons of possibilities. Let’s consciously make decisions to try and make choices that are good for us and our communities at all times. Great song from Hero. Swale are playing with a ton of other local bands at The Monkey House tomorrow. Everyone is playing country songs so that should be fun. I love that Mountain song. OK, as we stand at the abyss of a new administration this song seems appropriate.

21.) Into The Void – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
22.) Politicians In My Eyes – Death World Wide
23.) Blind Pigs – ROUGH FRANCIS
24.) Boys Club – Peg Tassey MUSIC

That is a great song about lashing out at an idea that seems to be coming back into power. Great song from Francis about standing up to racism. Sadly still appropriate song from Death. Breaks are playing at Foam Brewers tomorrow. This song is about fighting for the American Dream.

25.) American Dream – Doll Fight

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows:

Epitaph (Including March For No Reason/Tomorrow And Tomorrow) – King Crimson

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I got out of work a couple of nights ago and looked up and saw Orion. It’s the sign that winter is here and it always reminds me of this song.

1.) Stylus of Id – Somah
2.) When The Nights Get Long – Carraway
3.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit
4.) East Jabip – REDadmiral

With politics on so many people’s minds lately, Jabip seemed appropriate. It’s the season to rush around like crazy and sometimes it seems like it’s a countdown to meltdown. Thanks for explaining that feeling so well Black Rabbit. The days are getting shorter and shorter so the Carraway song is sounding perfect. Since they first played it back in the ’90’s that song by the short lived Somah always comes to mind at this time of year. OK, let’s play the next song on Seth Yacovone‘s new album Shovel Down.

5.) Caveman Guerrilla – Seth Yacovone Band
6.) A Company Man – Carraway
7.) Lights Of Montreal – Lobot
8.) Summer Falls – Lendway

I miss Lendway. Such a great song. Great song from Lobot that I love to pull out now and then. Zeus Springsteen sometimes play that one. More on that later. Another great new song from Carraway. Such a fun new song from Seth and the band. OK, let’s play some more super new music.

9.) I’m All Right You Say – Anachronist
10.) Nightingale – 1881
11.) It’ll Be Okay – Let’s Whisper
12.) Sri Lanka – Ellen Degenerates

Ellen will be at The Monkey House on Saturday. Great song from the Smittens offshoot. Great new song from 1881. Same for Anachronist. I felt terrible upon hearing of the death of Eric Olsen‘s father. I don’t know what to do or say, so I will just try and tell you all how amazing Eric is. It’s the only way I can think of to honor Eric’s father. Here is a small sampling of what Eric has helped create to fill our ears and hearts.

13.) Good Medicine – SWALE
14.) Armadillo – Swale
15.) Faineant – Swale
16.) You Are Not The Photograph – Swale
17.) Hit – Blue Button

Eric also plays with James Kochalka and Let Loco and likely others. I think Swale have a new album coming soon and are recording a video on Saturday. It’s too bad that I’m working. Those are all such great songs. OK, let’s keep rocking.

18.) The Meanest Song I’ll Ever Write – Milton Busker
19.) American Proxy – The Hero Cycle
20.) Today Is Tomorrow – The Red Telephone
21.) Black Blue and White – The New Siberians

I just love the new Siberians album. Great song by Telephone. If you like that song and are in town, check out The Nancy Druids sometime. Hero played around for a year or so in the 2000’s and I love their songs. Great song from Milton. OK, let’s keep rocking.

22.) The Day I Met You – Dirtminers
23.) Bridge To Panda Chaos – Zeus Springsteen
24.) U Can Love If U Want To – Peg Tassey MUSIC

Great classic from Peg. That’s a brand new song from the mighty Zeus. I’ve seen them a couple of times and love them. I’m so psyched to get more of their music and hopefully see them again soon. Great classic from Dirtminers. OK, there’s not much time left so let’s go out with a nautical theme.

25.) The River – Kat Wright
26.) The Anchor – Carraway
27.) Basalt Anchor – Vedora
28.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Those are all classics too. Barbacoa will play with Swale tomorrow at ArtsRiot for a live recording, so that is one of the many can’t miss shows tomorrow, and Saturday is just as packed. OK, let’s keep rocking.

25.) Knight Ov Swords – The Contrarian
26.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons
27.) Lead Me To Your Love – The New Siberians

Great new Siberians song. FTC rocked the early 2000’s and Casey used to sing in a few local bands. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
