Song before: Piano Music – Porcupine Tree

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve been enjoying the new album Hardly Electronic from this opening band, so let’s begin with some piano music.

1.) In The Key Of Me – The Essex Green
2.) When The Nights Get Long – Carraway
3.) Cascade – Andriana Chobot
4.) Adventure Safari – The Mountain Carol

It was so cool when Carol came in for a session of Live From Robot Dog Studio and instead of playing the electronic keys, Bruce played Ryan Cohen‘s sweet sounding piano. Great song from Andriana. I caught a couple of sets of her music last Friday at Red Square. She was as amazing as always. Great song and huge build from Carraway and super cool song form Essex. OK, the big event in town this weekend is Grace Potter’s Grand Point North festival. Be sure to get there early. Here are some of the great bands who are opening the show.

5.) Falter – Julia Caesar
6.) Soul No. 5 – Caroline Rose
7.) The Violent Stain Of My Bleeding Heart – Seth Yacovone Band
8.) Flaca Daza – Miku Daza
9.) Loose Tooth – Clever Girls

All of those bands are going to rock GPN hard. Caroline has gotten big but spent a lot of time in town. I’m so excited for both days and will be there early. I saw Clever Girls play a brilliant show last weekend at Art Hop. This next band came on after and played a blistering show. Last week, I played the last song on The Uncanny Doom Service, so let’s begin playing MSP3 Counter Attack, song after song, week after week, until it’s wrapped up.

10.) Big Box Law Enforcement – ROUGH FRANCIS
11.) Still Life Scene – Envy
12.) Whirlpool Rider – The High Breaks
13.) Mighty Have Fallen – Barbacoa

They played a brilliant show at Robot Dog Studio last week and that song really caught me. Cool new song from the Breaks. Classic from Envy. Great song from Francis who use the new album to stare racism in the face and offer peace and love as a counter attack. This song has been running through my head lately, so hopefully it will get stuck in your too.

14.) Automatic Sweetheart – Hammydown
15.) On My Way – Hover
16.) Veratrum – Piqued
17.) Fool That I Am – Eastern Mountain Time

Cool song from a band who have lots of shows scheduled all around Vermont. I wanted to revisit the song from Piqued, since it’s so cool. I hope they stop by town soon. Classic from the ’90’s from Hover. Great song from Hammy. OK, this next artist has put out a few cool albums but when he plays with his band he sounds just a little different. Here’s a song form his upcoming album.

18.) Gravity – Milton Busker & The Grim Work
19.) Loser – SWALE
20.) Underheard – Ivamae
21.) Silent River – Steady Betty

Betty’s songs always put me in a happy place. I hope it does the same for you. Great song from Ivamae. When I think of happy songs with depressing lyrics, I think of Swale. I think Milton is proving himself just as able. OK, last night I finally caught up with this singer in a movie theater at The Double E. This song digs into the pros and cons of life in America in a visceral way. The song after is the story of a kid asking mom why she would bring a child into this world. I think you’ll like the answer.

22.) Which America – Jason Baker
23.) Love – Hana Zara
24.) The Divine Feminine – Ouzkxqlzn
25.) Super Powers – The Dead Shakers

I love that song from the Shakers. I caught Lauren Costello playing at Art Hop, and despite calling her band an unpronounceable name, she is completely amazing. Hana asks mom why she was brought into the world. Mom says to fill you with love and to send you into the world to spread it. Great, if somewhat harsh, song form Jason. OK, he finished this year’s library tour, but has begun to book next years. What a cool way to support Vermont’s libraries.

27.) This City – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
28.) Give It Up To The Night – Bad Smell
29.) Infinity Pools – The Smittens
30.) Ghosts – Troy Millette Music
31.) Rainy Alley – Totally Submerged

Wishing the best for the people in the Carolina’s. Cool song from Submerged. Great song from Troy. I’m loving the new Smittens album City Rock Dove and expect to keep diving deeper. Super cool song from Smell and great song from David. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Songs after

Daredevil – The Tragically Hip
Sea Of Red – Judas Priest

The Nancy Druids, The Atlantic Effect, and Carraway at The Monkey House August 25, 2018   Leave a comment

I had a great time seeing music Saturday at The Monkey House. It was one of those bills with two bands I love and one I knew nothing about, so I was excited.

I took the lovely long walk to Winooski and got and settled and The Nancy Druids took the stage and rocked out Sky. December had a lovely pop sound with a shimmering guitar sound that made me smile. Bitter Days began with a chunky Rikenbaker bass riff from John Franklin and the song coalesced into pure delight. I Can’t Remember Who You Were soared to glorious rock heights and I felt like I was swimming in Sean Toohey’s massive guitar break at the end. Vondle Park was a slice of joyous pop then they rocked furiously on Halo. I love the powerhouse drum parts that Ann Mindell throws in. By Design was lovely and Salvation was inspirational. They rocked The Space Between super hard and that was going to close the show, but they had about four minutes left in their allotted time. They closed the night with a fun cover of Give A Little Bit. What a great set.

The Atlantic Effect pic by Tim Lewis

After their set I looked back and was pleased to see the room was mostly full of people. I chatted with Loren and Molly King for a bit then it was time for The Atlantic Effect. They opened with a jazzy instrumental that soon began to rock. They played a bluesy rock song about picking up the pieces and bringing it all back home. They sang about what it takes to be my sweet Virginia then tossed in a Band Of Horses cover that I did not know. It was pretty cool. They played a song about it being time for work and a cover I did not know with a funky groove. They played a song with a smokey blues sound then a super fast cover that might have been a Beastie Boys song, or something that sounded like that. They wrapped up the set with another blues rocker about giving me a second chance and that was that.

Carraway pic by Tim Lewis

I hung out for a bit during the set break then Carraway hit the stage hard with a cool new song about Pluto. It grabbed me immediately. Lion Tamer followed and rocked hard. They eased up for the gorgeous I’ve Come To Love and my heart was smiling. They played a cool song I did not know about making a deal with the devil when you sin’t got no soul. I was in a happy place as they sang songs about not wanting to do this anymore, being under the sea and being Kool. Time To Save The Wold had that lovely build then they became nice and heavy on The Anchor. They had us Raising The Dead and taught us how to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, in the worst way. They rocked hard on last night and closed with a great cover of Where Is My Mind. I love their sense of melody and drama and am very excited about the new songs they have.

I headed out fairly soon after. I contemplated how the show might have been cooler if Carraway and the Druids had played back to back, since their music is similar and Atlantic was a departure, as I took the long walk home. That said, I was happy to catch what I did.

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin with an artist who has been around for a while and put out a recent album that kind of blew me away.

1.) Magic In This Mystery – Robin Gottfried Band
2.) America Dreams – Jason Baker

5.) Love

Thanks so much for being so amazing Hana. Thanks Ryan Cohen for hosting and doing the sound, and Phoebe Zorn & Chrusty Barnacles for filming the video for Love that is on YouTube. Song before: It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks

inro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. I can seen you and you are amazing. You are beautiful. You can let that shine into our world at any time. Let out your super powers.

1.) Super Powers – The Dead Shakers
2.) Interstellar Kid – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
3.) Chosen Names – Julia Caesar
4.) Girl, Friend – T-Rextasy

Rex are from New York but stopped by town last Saturday to play at the Ramble showcase down by North st and North ave. They were so fun. Julia opened that show. Great new song form Jeremy’s new album Threaded. I love that new song from the Shakers. More about that in a bit. OK, here’s a delightful song from a delightful band.

5.) Red Rose – The Zii Trees
6.) Don’t You Wanna Know – The Thursday Torys
7.) St Patrick’s Day – Carraway
8.) Morning Again – Doll Fight

I miss Fight. They rocked so hard. Super cool song form Carraway. Great song from the Torys new album Future Folk. I’m sure I’ll get more on the air in the next few weeks. OK, here is the next song on The Uncanny Doom Service album. It’s cool that they tossed in a couple of clips of the Twilight Zone episode that this song was written about.

9.) Monsters Are Due On Maple Street – Doom Service
10.) Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely – Black Rabbit
11.) Ornan – Dirty Blondes
12.) Chum On The Drums – Bee Bee Sea

I don’t know it for sure, but it really sounds like Sea are singing Ornan is a chum so I had to play it with the Blondes song to celebrate the wonderful person Ornan McLean. He’s been through more than anyone should have to go through lately. We love you Ornan. Great cover from Rabbit and great rocker from Doom. Is it really that easy to dupe us humans? Sigh. OK, relax, get nice and chill, get yourself in a happy mood and let’s go. Let’s take a dive into a new album called All Circles Vanish.

13.) Can You Take Me Back – The Dead Shakers
14.) Surfin’ Ain’t As Fun As It Used To Be – The Dead Shakers
15.) Headless – The Dead Shakers
16.) Taung Child – The Dead Shakers
17.) Websdr.ewi.utwente.nl-8901 – The Dead Shakers

19.) Random Earth – Elephants of Scotland
20.) Lines And Spaces – The Cancer Conspiracy
21.) Purpose and Object – The Contrarian
22.) The Road – Anders Parker

That’s such an amazing song from Anders. Great song from Casey Rae. Cancer played around in the ’90’s and still do shows now and then. 23.) Gorilla Monsoon – Barbacoa
24.) Who Do You Love? – The Red Newts
25.) My Life In The West – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
26.) It’ll Be OK – Let’s Whisper

I love that song from Whisper. David and the band are continuing their series of shows in Vermont libraries. They will be in Fairfax tomorrow and I may have to catch that one. I chose West for obvious reasons. After the show at the Ramble I walked the 10 or 20 feet over to The Old North Ender and caught some songs by the Newts. They played a fun version of that one and some cool original tunes that I will have to track down soon. Barbacoa are just amazing.
