I had a great time being encapsulated in sound and stories last night at Radio Bean. I’d been meaning to catch up with Lauren Costello‘s solo project Ouzkxqlzn for a while and the timing was perfect for the show, though it was David Bowie’s birthday so she created an experience for us to celebrate. She spent the night alternating between guitar and cello and used a large variety of pedals to create loops and trigger recordings of people speaking about the man and some of Bowie himself. The show began with a gentle swirling sound and a man’s voice came on and spoke about how bold David was and how he empowered people to know that it was OK to be weird and freaky and to be themselves and to let that out into the world. It segued into a story from a woman who was a hairdresser and who had a client who was proud of her son who was in a band. As the story progressed she realized that Mrs Jones son was David Bowie and the hairdresser had heard Major Tom on the radio and thought he was a folk act. She eventually saw the Spiders and realized it was something more. Mrs Jones had the hairdresser do David’s hair for a show then she got asked to go on the road with the band and did everyone’ hair except for Mick Ronson who didn’t want to look like Bowie. She later married Mick. It was riveting. Lauren dropped in a clip of Bowie saying this is the last show we’ll ever do from the last Ziggy show then shifted into a completely deconstructed Ashes To Ashes. She made it sound very different and completely great. A recording of Bowie doing The Man Who sold The World followed for a while then shifted into an interview with David. This flowed for a while then Lauren played a gentle version of Modern Love. She moved back to the ambient sound and used a wrench on the guitar strings to evoke lovely sounds as Bowie confessed to many fun things on Sea Friends (?). It was really fun then slid into an interview where Bowie sang Conan O’Brien’s song about what a good host Conan was. It was quite amusing. This segued into a person speaking about David’s passing and not being sad because he could go home and listen to Heroes 10 times in a row anytime he wanted. Bowie’s song Heroes began to play and Lauren said goodnight.

I hung out until the last note of Heroes finished and took the lovely walk home in awe of the sheer talent that people in out town let loose into the world.

From our small city to the great big world these are the Sounds Of Burlington. 1.) I Ruined The Moon – Ruckzuck
2.) Alan’s Garden – Ruckzuck

4.) Miss Cancy – Ruckzuck

I want to thank Ruckzuck for playing three times last Sunday and for their relentless touring and over the top music. It just fills my heart and I hope it does the same for you. 5.) Stardust For Dessert – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
6.) A Monster’s Holiday – Matt the Gnat and the Gators

Great songs from Western and Farm. The first two were recorded at Robot Dog when those bands stopped in and played. OK, let’s go on to the next song from the Surf Sabbath album that I’m playing all the way through week after week.

10.) Ninjas Vs Zombies – Phil Yates
11.) Oh My God – Sarah Blacker & New England Groove Association

Tonight’s local music radio show will run from 9-11pm US Eastern Time Thursday September 14. It can be streamed from the WBKM Facebook page and will go as follows.

Song before: Fireworks – The Tragically Hip

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. My heart goes out to the people of Florida. Please help out if you can. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring the show. They will bring the giant GPN festival to the waterfront this weekend. Let’s begin tonight with a couple of bands who played at The Monkey House last night.

1.) Taung Child – The Dead Shakers
2.) Echoes On – Cones
3.) Unveiled – Pours
4.) Bidets And Confused – Sad Turtle

Turtle play cool instrumentals with Seinfeld references and are always fun. It was cool to see Chris Shar of Pours at the Landlady show last week but was even cooler to hear him play drums with the Shakers. Cones are from Los Angeles and we are so lucky to live in a town where they can just come and play on a Wednesday night. The Shakers haven’t recorded their full psychedelic sound yet but Child hints at it. More about that in a couple of weeks. OK, it’s time to play the last song on Loose Tooth and I will have to pick a new album to play all the way through, song after song, week after week.

5.) We Tried – Clever Girls
6.) I Like Flowers And I’m Not Afraid To Say It – Peg Tassey MUSIC
7.) Automatic Sweetheart – Hammydown
8.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara

Hana just successfully funded her new album with a Kickstarter campaign and I can’t wait to hear it. It was cool to see Abbie Gail from Hammydown play with Caroline Rose at the Madaila on Main show recently. I got to go to Ottawa and see the mosaiculture and to go to Montreal to see the botanical gardens this week so the Peg song jumped to mind. Great song and EP from Clever Girls. I”m sure they will have something new soon since they have lots of songs in their set that are not recorded yet. Last Saturday I saw a few classic bands at Higher Ground and one who have been playing around but I had just not seen. Here is one of their songs.

9.) Co2U Later – The Tsunamibots
10.) Projector – Vetica
11.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy
12.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons

Cannons played in the early 00’s and rocked us hard. Starlight were a cool ’90’s band. Vetica played some great shows in the 10’s and the Tsunamibots are putting on fantastic shows now. OK, let’s reach even further back into Burlington’s past.

13.) Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights) – The N-Zones
14.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget
15.) Breathe – Ninja Custodian
16.) Cowgirl In The Sand – Real Old and Insane Donkey

That was a band that Seth Yacovone put together to play some Neil Young songs. Ninja used to play cool covers back in the late ’80’s at Nectar’s and other places. Bridget played last Saturday and are playing the next couple of Saturday’s at Nectar’s. N-Zones played back in the early ’80’s or late ’70’s. Burlington has a lot of great original music but we do like covers too. OK, this next band will make a rare appearance in town at Light Club Lamp Shop tomorrow at 7:30.

17.) Northern Skies – The Lindbergh Baby
18.) Say It – Anachronist
19.) A Company Man – Carraway
20.) Drug Laws – SWALE

I love the way that song continuously rocks. Such a fun song from Carraway. Great songs form Anachronist and Lindbergh. So, last Friday there were a bunch of cool bands who played at the Art Hop but heavy rain wiped out most of the outside shows. This band saw a break in the weather, got set up and began to play as the rain came back. This was the only song of their set and they are such troopers for even playing that one.

21.) The Original Original – Black Rabbit
22.) Good Times – Grand
23.) Shark – Greaseface
24.) Blank Daze – Mr. Doubtfire
25.) Blue Lights – Sink or Swim

Sink will play a show this Saturday. Ask them for the detains since it’s an underground show. Doubtfire and Grand played a great show at Radio Bean Monday night. Grease are playing at the Monkey House on Saturday. OK, let’s keep rocking.

26.) By Design – The Nancy Druids
27.) The Great Forgetter – The New Siberians
28.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
29.) Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT

Those are four of many the great songs to come out of the Burlington scene. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

1.) Able To Breathe – Peter Burton
2.) Faded Movie Reel – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
3.) Your Eyes – Forest Gray
4.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard

Francesca is pretty amazing and will be at Foam Brewers tomorrow night. I caught a set by Forest at Nectar’s last Saturday and really enjoy his music. 5.) 45 – Clever Girls
6.) Stardust For Dessert – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
7.) The Interrogator (Enhanced) – Milton Busker
8.) Nature – Madaila

Madaila are throwing a huge party all day Saturday and will block off Main street in front of Nectar’s and play with a bunch of other bands. You’ve just got to love them. I caught a set by Milton on Tuesday at Light Club Lamp Shop and his band the Grim Work are really good. Great song from David about the Paris attacks and how we can change from being alive to stardust in an instant. Clever are playing at The Monkey House tomorrow and always put on a great show, though there’s so many other shows happening that night too. OK, there is a cool after Madaila party at Nectar’s and this band will be there.

10.) The Perfect Map – Elephants of Scotland
11.) Constant Disaster – When Particles Collide
12.) Blind Pigs – ROUGH FRANCIS

Francis will be at the after show party at Nectar’s too and I’m very excited. Particles played a great version of that last night at the Monkey House. Elephants are playing a show in New Haven Vermont on Saturday with their new bass player Robert Gagnon. Hmmm, Swale. OK, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for an interview and live songs from Savage Hen. It’s another edition of WBKM live at Robot Dog Studio.

13.) Voodoo Revenge – Savage Hen
14.) The Wrong List – Savage Hen
15.) Clever Girl – Savage Hen
16.) Local Lore – Savage Hen

I want to thank Ryan Cohen for making us sound so good and to thank Jack Kubera, Matthew Bryan Hagen and Jeremy Gartner for rocking so hard. OK, let’s keep rocking.

17.) Comm To Space – Rough Francis
18.) Storm Cloud – When Particles Collide
19.) TFAY – Elephants Of Scotland
20.) Elevator – Swale

I’m so psyched to see Swale and Francis and am thinking the timing might be too tight to get back from New Haven in time. Sigh. Particles played that one last night too. OK, let’s keep rocking.

21.) Children Of The Stars – Madaila
22.) The Meanest Thing I’ll Ever Write – Milton Busker
23.) Hope In The Dark – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
24.) Catch And Release – Clever Girls

Clever have been opening with that song and I’m so glad they did a Robot Dog session with me so I have a copy to play for you. Yet another great song from David. Milton’s albums sound different from his band but the songs have the same basic structure. They played a cool version of that on Tuesday. I love that Madaila song. I really like this song too.

25.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
26.) You’re Not Listening – Forest Gray
27.) Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist
28.) Let Me Be – Peter Burton

I thought I’d end where I began with great songs from Peter and Jeremy. Forest played a cool version of that on Saturday at Nectar’s. Francesca writes such great songs. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

That’s the next song from Kat’s album By My Side that I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. That’s a brand new song from Swale from their upcoming album There’s No One Here. Wow, what a beautiful song, and what about those horns? The Jeremy song was from the interview and recording we did a few weeks back at Robot Dog Studio. 14.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
15.) Sorrow Of The Space Inside – Secret Heliotropes

That song is so quiet and so loud and so gentle and so powerful and always blows me away when then play it live. I’m so happy I finally get to play it for you. That’s another cool song from Heliotropes album A Well Lit Room. Great song from Milton and same for 1881. OK, let’s keep rocking.
