Song before Shine – Stoneman Douglas Drama Club

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Please join me on a ride through some deep cuts from Burlington’s past to music that was released this week. Let’s start a decade ago with an amazing song.

1.) Bad Oasis – farm
2.) Cancer – SWALE
3.) On Backstreets – Eastern Mountain Time
4.) Small Town Movie – The Cush

Movie is one of those songs that everyone always loves when they play live. Cool new song from Eastern who are at Zenbarn tonight. Cancer is from Swale’s first EP Verdigris. I want to send that out to everyone who is dealing with cancer, whether it’s you, your family or a loved one. Keep up the fight and make sure you have lots of friends to help. I love that Farm song. OK, here is the next song on Black, Blue & White.

5.) Bird On The Sea – The New Siberians
6.) Judgment Day – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
7.) Honest Will – The Parts
8.) Cemetery Walks – Ryan Ober and The Romans

Great new song from his Caveman Blues album. It was great to chat with Ryan last Monday at the Maryse Smith show. Cool new song from Danny LeFrancois and the band. I’ve played Judgment before but this is the brand new final mix from the upcoming Book Of Zoo album. Such a fantastic song from the Siberians. So, I made it out to the three Monday residency shows that Maryse has done at Light Club Lamp Shop this month. There is another opportunity next Monday. She’s played a lot of cool songs but maybe not this one.

9.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith
10.) Luminous – Michael Chorney and Hollar General
11.) Kids – Wren Kitz
12.) Magic In This Mystery – Robin Gottfried Band

I love thinking about the magic and mystery in and around life. Robin and the band are playing Saturday at On Tap Bar and Grill. Wren will be at Autumn Records on Saturday. I chose Kids to honor all of the kids standing up to their schools and governments and TV personalities to try and stop the gun violence. Have it kids!! Michael joined Maryse last Monday and it was so wonderful to hear their guitars weave together, while Francesca Blanchard weaved her voice with Maryse’s. Next week should be pretty magical too. This next band are playing tonight at Red Square.

13.) Three Feels Right – gneiss
14.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
15.) The Mists – Aram Bedrosian
16.) Crimescene – Dino Bravo VT

That’s a cool newer song from Dino that was recorded at our Robot Dog Studio session last year. Great work as always from Aram. Francesca is playing Sunday at Higher Ground. Great song from Gneiss from a Robot Dog session last year too. This next singer moved away but comes back now and then.

17.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass
18.) Your Downtown Aperture – Video Pigeon
19.) Bob Marley And The Hartford Whalers – The Zambonis
20.) Green Apple Girl – Cranial Perch

Perch played lovely chaotic music in the ’90’s. Zambonis played songs about hockey in the ’90’s. Pigeon had that super cool kind of mysterious sound in the ’90s’. I love the power of Hero. Here’s another band from the ’90’s.

21.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy
22.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
23.) Golgi Apparatus – The Pants
24.) High Water Mark – Belizbeha

Belizbeha played acid jazz in the ’90’s. That’s a cover of a Pants song. That’s the Pants covering Phish. Zola always rocked. Great song from Starlight. Let’s play another song about the power of water.

25.)The Sea Is powerful – Wide Wail
26.) Daydreaming – Thanya Iyer
27.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

Such a powerful song from Anais. Thanya are from Montreal but stopped by the Lamp Shop on Tuesday and played a great show. Wail were so great in the ’90’s. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

1.) House Of Mirrors – Hana Zara
2.) Maria – Francesca Blanchard
3.) Winter – David L Jarvis
4.) Low Down Mid-December – Eastern Mountain Time

I love the cold dark feel of December and Winter. They nicely describe what it feels like to be in Vermont at this time of year. Maria is a new song and if you purchase it from Francesca’s Bandcamp page the money will be donated to relief for Puerto Rico. Great song from Hana. So, last night we recorded the first live at Robot Dog Studio for 2018 and here it is.

21.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian
22.) Fly On The Wall – Zola Turn
23.) Screwball – Screaming Broccoli

Swale 016

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM.ORG will run from 9-11pm US Eastern Time December 7, 2017. You can stream it from the website above or our Facebook page link here: WBKM It will go as follows

Song before: Two Places At Once – The Church

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. If you’ve listened in at WBKM in the past few days you may have noticed that we shifted our format to be local music, but I’m still going to be in every Thursday to give you my take. Let’s begin with a legendary local performer who has been in Nebraska for the last couple of years, but still comes back and plays for is. Here is a song from her brand new album Where Amanda Is King.

1.) Hartford – Hana Zara
2.) Editor In Chief – Ryan Power
3.) Magenta Man – Rue M.
4.) The Sea Widow – Hana Zara

I’ve given the new album a couple of glancing listens and Widow and Hartford jumped out, but I think the whole album is pretty amazing. Thanks Hana! Classic song from Rue who always put on amazing shows. Cool new song from Ryan’s album They Sell Doomsday which came out in October. OK, let’s play the next song on Black, Blue and White.

5.) Make It Work – The New Siberians
6.) Crutch – Kelly Ravin
7.) Golden Crutch – SWALE
8.) Low Down Mid-December – Eastern Mountain Time

Such a great song about this time of year. That version was recorded at Robot Dog Studio a couple of weeks ago. I’m just getting to know Kelly Ravin’s new album Engine. I thought Crutch would sound good after the Siberians song then had to toss in the Swale song for obvious reasons. OK, here is the title song from Kelly’s album.

9.) Engine – Kelly Ravin
10.) Empress Of Ireland – Thompson Gunner
11.) The Mime – Joe Adler
12.) You Will Fall – Kelly Ravin

Some of Kelly’s songs are more country but Fall is all out rock and roll. Great song from Joe. Empress is pretty epic and was recorded live one night at Nectar’s. OK, let’s keep rocking. This is from an album coming out soon but I got an advance copy so I can play you a few songs.

13.) Signal Loss – Zeus Springsteen
14.) By Design – The Nancy Druids
15.) Above The Frequency – Invisible Homes
16.) Everything Will Be Eventual – Zeus Springsteen

That’s another cool new song from Zeus. That’s a classic from Homes. I saw an acoustic version of the Druids last week and it was cool. That’s a full rock as usual version from the Robot Dog session we did earlier this year. OK, this next song was recorded live at Nectar’s a few years back.

17.) I Think I’m Turning Into A Robot – Wave of the Future
18.) Robots Making Love – Pinhead
19.) RobotsImprovingRobots – The Tsunamibots
20.) Joey Is A Robot – Zeus Springsteen

That song is so much fun when they play live and I’m happy I have a copy now so I can share it with you. What can I say, our town just loves robots. OK, let’s keep rocking with another Burlington classic.

21.) Heartbreak Baby – Villanelles
22.) Can’t Feel It – Vetica
23.) From Here – The Red Summer Sun

All of those songs were from the past 4-5 years and sound so great. OK, let’s keep rocking.

25.) Full Moon Flowers – Zeus Springsteen
26.) The Mountain Carol – The Mountain Carol
27.) The Last Carol – The Cush
28.) Mary – Plan B

Plan B played around in the 80’s and that is such an epic song about searching for the good life. I want to send that out to my friend Mary Wolcott who just took off to go to France and spend a lot of time at the Louvre. Way to go. Lovely song from The Cush. I caught Mountain at Radio Bean on Monday and they were amazing. More on that soon. Thanks Zeus!! Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Ta ta, farewell, see you next week nudge nudge wink wink…

Song before: Train In Vain – The Clash

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. What a crazy week, it’s been like summer and in the ’90’s and suddenly today it’s a chilly fall day. You’ve got to love Vermont. Let’s begin tonight with a band who are about to release a new album called Most Every Night.

1.) Get Loud – Near North
2.) Jesse – The Parts
3.) Favorite Bag – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
4.) Wicked World – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)

It’s so cool that the Breaks did the whole album of Sabbath songs in a surf style. I’m playing it all the way through song after song week after week. Cool song from Phil’s upcoming album. Great song from The Parts. Thanks Near North for sending me a copy of your new album on blue vinyl. It sounds great. OK, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for another edition of WBKM Live At Robot Dog.

1.) Intro->Accidental Graveyard-> The Dead Shakers
2.) Taung Child -> – The Dead Shakers
3.) Superpowers -> – The Dead Shakers
4.) Medfield – The Dead Shakers

Thanks to Ryan Cohen from Robot Dog for making us all sound so great and thanks Burlington Beer Company for the libations. I especially want to thank The Dead Shakers for taking us on a rocking journey. OK, this next band have been playing around for ages and Mr. Charlie Frazier is a local legend. He has kept Vermont’s desire for the music of The Grateful Dead going for years.

5.) Intros -> – Blues for Breakfast, the band
6.) Scarlet Begonias -> – Blues For Breakfast
7.) Music Never Stopped – Blues For Breakfast

Vermont loves the music of the Dead and Mr. Charlie’s dedication to the blues. So, this weekend it was so hot I’m sure lots of people headed to the beach.

8.) Beach Song – Mr. Ray Fork
9.) Kindergarten – Lendway
10.) Sky – The Nancy Druids
11.) Somewhere Far – The Red Telephone

Great song from Sean Toohey and Matt Hutton. Druids are Sean’s new band and they are playing Saturday at The Monkey House so go check them out. I miss Lendway. All last week was beach weather. It’s getting late in the year and darkness is coming earlier.

12.) Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot
13.) Hope In The Dark – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
14.) Cheese Whiz Salad – Wren Kitz
15.) Queen City – Cave Bees

I’m psyched that the Bees have that recorded so I can play it for you. Burlington is The Queen City and I rock it as many nights as I can. I caught Wren Kitz and his band at Club Metronome last week and they were stunning. Lauren Costello plays in Wren’s band and in The Dead Shakers. Great songs from Andriana and David. Josh Shedaker plays in The Dead Shakers and in this next band. He just lost his grandmother so we want to send him lots of love.

16.) Strawberry Blonde – Dino Bravo VT
17.) Mr Reed – Seth Yacovone Band
18.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
19.) Mary – Plan B

That’s a classic from the ’80’s. I love the truth in Joe’s song that we are all brothers and sisters and that we should take care of each other in times of pain and in times of joy. Great rockers from Seth and Dino. We all have a limited amount of time on this world so please spend it well.

20.) Precious Time – The Cush

Song before (Then Came The) Last Of May – Blue Oyster Cult

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin tonight with a woman who has come to town for years to share her music with us. Here is the brand new song she just released.

1.) Walkabout – Sarah Blacker & New England Groove Association
2.) Mama – Ivamae
3.) Powder – The New Siberians
4.) Lovely Day – gneiss

That song makes me so happy. I hope it does the same for you. Great song from the Siberians debut album from a few years ago. Ivamae are so wonderfully talented. Great new song from Sarah. OK, here is the next song from Lights Camera Action and is the last song on the Lights EP.

5.) Sleepwalker – 1881
6.) Just Another Day – The Nancy Druids
7.) Alan’s Garden – Ruckzuck
8.) Last Day Of May – The Red Telephone

Today is the first of June so I thought that would be appropriate to play. After seeing Ruckzuck so much last week, I’m still pretty enthralled with them and wanted to play Garden again. Great rocker from Nancy and wonderful song about insomnia from 1881. That’s a lot of sheep to count. OK, I almost saw this band last Tuesday at Light Club Lamp Shop but I worked just late enough to miss them

9.) Sri Lanka – Ellen Degenerates
10.) I Will – Camp Howard
11.) The Field – The Dead Shakers
12.) Look At The Lilacs – Binger

The lilacs around town have begun to fade but what a show they have put on for the last couple of weeks. I missed Ellen at the show last week, but did catch Howard and Shakers and really enjoyed both. OK, here is a song that really speaks about Burlington Vermont.

13.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
14.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
15.) Ornan – Dirty Blondes
16.) TFAY – Elephants of Scotland

I heard that John M Whyte has joined Ornan McLean in the Blondes and both play in Elephants so i had to play those two. Can’t wait to see him play a show with them. Great songs from Doubtfire and Violint. There’s a guy around town named Joe who makes and brings us lots of music. Here is one of his songs.

17.) Stratosphere – Joe Adler
18.) Forsythia – Cricket Blue
19.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara
20.) 45 (live) – Clever Girls

Such a complex and beautiful song from the Girls. Great song from the enchanting Hana Zara. Cricket are so wonderful and so is Joe. OK, here is a Burlington classic.

21.) My Old Boyfriend – Wide Wail
22.) Ladybug – Ninja Custodian
23.) Always Monica/Down At The Duck – Chin Ho

25.) Here’s Where You Are – SWALE
26.) Every Last One Of Us – Swale
27.) Last Love – Myra Flynn Music
28.) Once Upon – Vedora

Classic song from Caroline Marie. Her band Steady Betty is playing around town for Jazzfest. Myra is playing at least one show and doing a songwriting workshop, which sounds cool, as part of the huge festival. Hmmm, Swale. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Radio Show 98 Thursday February 12, 2015 9-11pm Eastern US Time WBKM.ORG   Leave a comment

I just got back from my 98th local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I know it’s almost Valentine’s Day, but I focused more on the minerals that make up our bodies and our earth.

Song before the song before: Ships – Anais Mitchell

Song before: The Cinema Show – Genesis

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a cold snowy night in Burlington but lots of people are walking around and not letting it get them down. Last week I talked about how much of our bodies are made of water. Tonight, I will talk about the remaining amount of minerals, the dust that we are, the dust from where we came and the dust we will become. The earth is a medium where things grow out of and into our world. We start as dust and grow into the world and eventually will return to the dust. Let’s begin tonight with Anais Mitchell and Our Lady Of The Underground on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Our Lady Of The Underground – Anais Mitchell
2.) Garden Flower – Maryse Smith
3.) The Seed (live) – Elephants of Scotland
4.) Sequoia 3 – Binger

We all started from the same root indeed. Humankind began and grew into branching civilizations but we all started from the same root and from the same soil. The soil allows seeds to grow into the world and create flowers and new seeds to go back into the soil, and continue the cycle. Maryse played a sweet version of that Saturday at Radio Bean. Can’t wait to see Elephants in Montreal playing as a side part of the Marillion weekend. OK, let’s step away from the theme and play the next song on Many Things & Many Scenes.

5.) Dreams Elope – Joe Adler
6.) Pocono Pines – Great Western
7.) In The Pines – Vedora

If you want to be out in the pines under a blanket of snow, Vermont is the place to be. It’s so beautiful at this time of year. Nice song from GW. Musicians often start as fans and have other bands that influence the roots of the music they will create. Let’s play a couple of covers and look at some band roots.

8.) Sitting Still (REM cover) – Ninja Custodian
9.) Dizzy (Tommy Roe cover) – Peg Tassey MUSIC
10.) Finder (Madelines cover) – Rocketsled
11.) Rock And Roll Is My Weapon (Ninja Custodian cover) – The Channel Two Dub Band

Ending where we began with that set. The last two were from the Burlington Does Burlington album from many years ago. I love the songs of the band Swale but every once in a while they do a show of cover songs and let people sign up and sing them. They call it Swaleoke. It’s a mixture of pro and amateur singers. A couple of times ago they said I had to sing a song at one, and will do so Saturday night at Radio Bean. I can’t sing so it’s going to be weird. Until then, here is a true Sale song.

12.) The Next Instead – Swale
13.) Asphyxia – Better Things
14.) Black Oil – Doom Service

Oil is part of the earth and helped humankind evolve to where we are but hopefully we can get off it soon. Granted that song is about the X-Files but it’s good to get off that oil too. BT are playing at Nectar’s on Monday and I hope to catch them. Binger are playing on Tuesday and many other days this week. I’m so psyched for the Death World Wide show coming up at the Flynn Theatre tomorrow. This set goes out to my brother Ken who will join me.

15.) Where Do We Go From Here??? – Death
16.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS
17.) Let the World Turn – Death

It’s going to be a great show. Nice cover story in the Burlington Free Press today. I thought I would not have any new songs to play and just before I headed down to the show I got this super brand new song.

18.) The Way It Is – Maryse Smith
19.) Santa Anna – Hana Zara
20.) Tell Me – Linda Bassick
21.) When I Was New – Sarah Blacker

Sarah is busy working on a brand new album. I can’t wait. Linda has new stuff coming too, and may stop into my radio show to play some songs in the coming weeks. I can’t wait for Hana’s new album The North. There are going to be so many great songs on it, judging from seeing them live. That’s the title song on Maryse’s new album that should be out soon. She did a great version of it last week at Radio Bean and I hope her leg heals soon. I’m going to cheat a bit an send this out by request to Skipper Horner

22.) At The Hundredth Meridian – The Tragically Hip
23.) Earth Blues – The Eames Brothers Band
24.) Tallest Trees – Slowdim

Great song from the Boston band that I’d love to have someone bring to town sometime. Nice earthy songs from the Vermont and Canadian bands. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song after: Blind To The Beautiful – Fish

Radio Show 96 Thursday January 29, 2015 9-11pm Eastern US Time WBKM.ORG   Leave a comment

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I promised it would start a little slow, get a bit experimental, then end with a bang. I think I delivered nicely.

Show before: The ’80’s Ladies playing some ’80’s Genesis

After their show I played:

Firth of Fifth (live) – Genesis (With Peter Gabriel)
To Be Over – Yes (official)
Weeping Willow – Persian Claws

Song before: Lake Song – The Decemberists

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s fairly warm for a January night, through the wind is a little cool. It was a nice walk in this evening and it was a nice walk downtown last night when I saw this first singer at Nectar’s. This is Better Half by Abbie Morin on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Better Half – Abbie Morin
2.) Hopin’ That I’m Wrong – Will
3.) Powder – The New Siberians

Great song from the Siberians last album. They achieved their Kickstarter goal but if people keep chipping in, they will make the album cooler. Love that song from Will. I’ve got to check out Abbie again, maybe sometime when a killer band did not just play before her. OK, on to the next song from Joe Adler‘s Many Things & Many Scenes.

4.) Many A Girl (Back of a Sail) – Joe Adler
5.) Secret Makeout Factory – And The Kids
6.) Lawnfire – The Pants
7.) Burn It Down Bernadette – Phil Yates & The Affiliates

Great song from the upcoming new Phil album. Classic ’90’s band The Pants, and I had to play a song of theirs following the ATK song. Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger played a nice version of that at Nectar’s last night, as well as some stunning versions of some of his other songs. I’m slowly getting to know this next band.

8.) This Machine – Invisible Homes
9.) Space Opera – Aram Bedrosian
10.) AV6 – Bad Smell
11.) Give Me All Your Love – Madaila

I should check out their music more. I really like that song. Nice music from Raph Worrick and Jane Boxall Percussion. Burlington is such a small town, I ran into Aram in the grocery store before the show. Last week I played two new Alice Austin songs but she put three out. I would be remiss if I did not play the third one.

12.) What If I Don’t Go? – Alice Austin
13.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
14.) Lithuania – Hana Zara
15.) The Time Traveler – Jeremy Gilchrist

Jeremy is doing the Rock Lotto thing Saturday morning. It’s where a bunch of musicians form new bands for the day, write three songs and do one cover and play the songs later that evening at Club Metronome. Any other musicians up for the challenge? It’s a benefit to raise money for Girls Rock Vermont. Great song from Hana. I can’t wait for the new album. It’s going to have tons of great songs!! I love that song by Milton. I saw this next band once, and would like to see them again.

16.) Singing Songs In Your Sleep – Carraway
17.) Grounded – Invisible Jet
18.) Open Road – Death World Wide
19.) Hungry – Heavy Plains

HP have their debut album coming out. They are playing Saturday at The Monkey House. Nice song from Death’s third album. Cool song from the ’90’s in Burlington. OK, let’s rock for a while.

20.) Hello World – Screaming Skulls
21.) Extouring – Jesus Christ and the Hallucinogenic Allstars
22.) Tic Toc – Doll Fight
23.) Vestibule – Blue Button

Killer song from BB. I miss Dollfight. I’ve got to catch JCHA sometime. In Burlington, there is a part of town called the Old North End and its residents are proud.

24.) Old North Ender – James Kochalka Superstar
25.) North Street – Death
26.) Wino – REDadmiral

That song was recorded live at the Old North Ender Pub on North St. Nice song from Death’s third album. It’s almost time to go but let’s rock a bit more.

27.) Everyone Likes To – Swale
28.) Institution Street – The Red Telephone
29.) Carnage – Black Rabbit
30.) Trading Bullets – Fire The Cannons

Nice eponymous song from FTC. Wow, they rocked hard for a couple of years in town. Killer song from Rabbit. I love that rocker from RT. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
