From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s so cool that David and the band have begun this year’s tour of libraries. 22.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons

Silver Bridget at Farmhouse Tap & Grill June 17, 2019   Leave a comment

I had a great time seeing music a week ago Monday at The Farmhouse Tap & Grill. The show was scheduled from 7-9 and I had to work until 7:30. I got out quickly and drove downtown. I got parked close by and walked into the lovely outside deck. I found a seat near the band and began to listen.

Silver Bridget played as a trio and their instrumental takes on classic songs were as delightful as ever. They were playing Country Roads as I got a beer, then followed with Old Man. Johnnie Day Durand gave the saw a little extra bend to wring out the notes. John Townsend strummed the acoustic guitar and kicked the drums as Matt Saraca played lead electric guitar. She Loves You followed and sounded nice, then they ended the set,

It was great to chat with them during the break, but soon it was time to discover how out of Bridget shape I’m in. The first two songs in the second set sounded very familiar but I couldn’t grasp them. I think one was a Beatles song and one might have been a Beach Boys tune. Across The Universe was easy to spot and sounded lovely. Creep had a nice dark edge to it and they followed with Over The Rainbow. I missed the next three, but thoroughly enjoyed them. We took a trip on the Blue Bayou and am reasonably sure we went Here, There, And Everywhere after that. Only Love Can Break Your Heart was achingly beautiful then they kicked into high gear for a blistering Paint It Black to close the night.

I hung out for a bit but soon, it was time to head home. It’s great to see them, but next time, I need to bring friends to help out.

6.) Energy – The Steph Pappas Experience
7.) Piranha Love – The Steph Pappas Experience
8.) Jellyfish – The Steph Pappas Experience

OK, it’s Jazzfest so let’s play a couple of jazz songs.

10.) Skylark – Tiffany Pfeiffer and The Discarnate Band
11.) Elmer’s Van – the le duo
12.) Super Powers – The Dead Shakers
13.) Buffalo – Late Night

I’ve had that song stuck in my head for the last week so I thought I’d share. I love that song from the Shakers. Le Duo are such great musicians. I was bummed to work through Tiffany’s Jazzfest show. I had to play some of her music. So, something cool happened this week. Swale submitted a song to NPR’s Tiny Desk contest and did not win, but received a lot of notice, and even did a cool interview. They submitted the song coming up and described it as a love song for people struggling with addiction. Of course it is perfect for that and more. We all feel lost sometimes, and hearing Amanda Gustafson being so positive and giving a path out of that is very powerful. I’ve always loved and held this song dear. It’s gotten me through hard times. Please share it if you or anyone you know is feeling that way.

14.) If You Get Lost – SWALE
15.) Don’t Cough Me Out – Slowdim
16.) Premeditated – Slingshot Dakota
17.) It’ll Be Okay – Let’s Whisper

I love that song and wanted to bookend the set with pure positive vibes. I’m loving Heaving Banding, the new Slingshot album. It’s almost time for year two of the tour where David and the band raise money and awareness of Vermont’s libraries. I think they kick it off June 21 at the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington. That’s s a cool newer song from Jason, who played around town for many years. Is Summer here? It’s starting to feel that way today. I caught Matt and his biting songs recently, and highly recommend them. Those are such great songs from Castles and the Siberians. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Tata, farewell….

Kali Ma And The Garland Of Arms at Radio Bean April 14, 2019   Leave a comment

IMG_2953

I had a great time seeing music on Sunday April 14th at Radio Bean. It was a long work day but I had plenty of time to relax and hang out. The hour got later and later but I was still awake. A little after 11:30, I took the lovely walk downtown and slid into the Bean. I said hi to Kali Ma and the Garland of Arms – KMGA and settled in. I had listened to a few songs on their album but still got lost as they opened with a mellow rocker. The next one was huge and glorious and I’m pretty sure the one after that was Toy Void. It’s nice to get to know an album. The next song had a slow bluesy start and a bit of a prog reggae vibe that made me smile. Spine followed and was epic. The one after that was a more poppy rocker then they played one with a nice heavy groove. They played one that started slow then built way up and finished the night with a cool rock groove. I still hadn’t gotten my head around the songs but was getting there. Since then, I’ve played their album a few dozen times and am all set to go the next time they come to town.

I hung out for a bit after the show but quickly took the lovely walk home. I got a few hours of sleep before work in the morning. I was a little tired, but it was so worth it.

Quiltro

I had a great time seeing music April 13th at The Monkey House. I’m so far behind.

I had a nice day at work and when I got home there was a message on Facebook from Faith Kelly reminding me to check out one of her new favorite bands. Who am I to stand in the way of such enthusiasm? I took the lovely long walk to Winooski, got settled, and soon it was time for openers Quiltro to take the stage. They lit in with a trancey Floyd vibe and added a soundscaping guitar. The second of their instrumental songs had more keys and a triumphant sound and I was in a happy place. The next song really lit me up and I’m pretty sure it was a cover of When You’re In from Obscured By Clouds. I was beaming. The rest of the eight song set was like a sea of sound and I enjoyed the swim. They closed with a cool smooth rocker and I really need to get to know them more.

The set break was reasonable then Kali Ma and the Garland of Arms – KMGA took the stage. They opened with a cool song and followed with one that was dropped from the stars prog. I was in a happy place. I had a hard time really getting my head around the songs so I just rocked back and forth a bit and let the wave of sound move me around. The sound was luscious and joyous and I just loved it. The fourth song of the set had a towering lead guitar part that lit me up, but it was the way the band flowed together that made me love them. They capped the 9 song set with a huge rocker and I was in a happy place. I hung out and chatted a bit and bought their CD then took the lovely walk home. Faith was so right.

The Nancy Druids at Light Club Lamp Shop May 26, 2019   Leave a comment

I had a great time seeing music last Saturday at Light Club Lamp Shop. It was a long hectic work day, but I had a little time at home before taking the lovely walk downtown. I got in and settled and chatted with cool people like Steph Pappas and Loren Tindall and Molly King. Soon, it was showtime.

When The Nancy Druids play the Lamp Shop it’s usually more of an acoustic show and that night was no different. While I love their full rock fury, it’s nice to hear slightly quieter versions of their lovely songs now and then. They opened with the breezy Vondelpark (sp??) that blew every care and concern right out of my mind. Just Another Day followed with a nice rock stomp and a stunning upper middle fretboard solo from Sean on his acoustic guitar. Sign had a fun bounce and made me smile. John had been playing the Rickenbacker for the first three but switched to bouzouki as Ann Mindell and Sean’s daughter Ariel joined them on cello. They played a lovely version of Sky and followed with a shimmering version of December. By Design rocked nicely in the acoustic format then they pulled out a fun cover of The Ghost In You. Ariel stuck around for one more and the band let loose a lovely version of The Space Between. They returned to trio format, with John on bass, and they showed us that Salvation was all around. They kicked it up a bit for a rocking Remember Who You Were then returned to the shimmer for Disappear. They rocked out Bitter Days then were going to end with a rocking Halo, but the audience wanted more. They closed the night with Give A Little Bit and we were happy. I hung out and chatted for a bit then took the lovely walk home. It was another great night of music in our town.

The Steph Pappas Experience at Robot Dog Studio and Andriana Chobot at Deli 126 May 31, 2019   Leave a comment

The Steph Pappas Experience

I had a great time seeing music yesterday. I went over to Robot Dog Studio in the early evening to record an interview and live performance with The Steph Pappas Experience. Loren, Matt, and Steph jammed out some bluesy tunes that found fun twists and turns and were fascinating to listen to and made me rock out. She and Loren played acoustic guitar and bass but there was a full rock sound. She played some killer slide for a bit and you’ve got to hear how the conversation meanders to believe it. The band even pulled out a fifth song jazz jam in honor of Jazzfest. I’ll have that on my radio show on WBKM next Thursday.

IMG_3294

The Steph Pappas Experience

We started the recording a little after 6 and were done a little after 7. I drove home, zipped out the door and walked to Deli/126. I got in and settled as Andriana Chobot rocked out some songs with her drummer Jesse Samuel Rosenfield and guitarist Franky Andreas. They veered a little bit away from the more normal rock presentation of her songs and gave them all an appropriate jazzy feel. She opened on the mellow side with Not I and Another Day then brought the energy up with Cascade. She took us for a ride in her daddy’s white T-Bird then sang of My Old House. She asked us to stay and make her warm then sang about being Alone In The Night. The played another cool song then dropped a cover of Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone. She sang about there being nowhere to go but here and was going to wrap the set with a super cool Neon, but hung out for one more. The closing song about the work of Steven Hawking giving her Galaxy Eyes was super cool.

I was kind of tired at that point so I took the lovely walk home with tons of beautiful music in my soul.

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin with the next song from the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song week after week. It’s called Serotinalia.

1.) Psalm – Cricket Blue
2.) The North – Hana Zara
3.) The Divine Feminine – Ouzkxqlzn
4.) Cascade – Andriana Chobot

I love the huge sweeping sound from Andriana. She is so amazing. That’s a cool piece from Lauren Costello‘s fantastic solo project with the unpronounceable name. Hopefully, Hana will come visit again soon. Cricket are just amazing. OK, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for an interview and live performance.

5.) Undertow – Late Night (featuring Jamie Williamson, Annie Costa, Peter Danforth, Spike, and Channon Geoff Berstein)
6.) Us – Late Night
7) Over The Hill Over The Water – Late Night
8.) Buffalo – Late Night.

Wow, what a performance. Thanks everyone so much!! OK, so a year or so ago I posed an unfair question on Facebook asking which of these next two was the best song, but one of them had not been released yet. Both of the songs that follow have been released now.

10.) Pale Rage – Invisible Homes
11.) The Badger Flies At Dawn – Adam Rabin
12.) 16 Ton Soul – Milton Busker And The Grim Work
13.) Tiny Bits – Josh Bridgman

Josh was so amazing. The Grim Work are still pretty amazing. That’s a fun song from Adam’s collection of solo and potentially Elephant songs. So, which do you like best? I love them both, it’s an unfair question. OK, this next band have played town many times over the years and they just released a new album called Heavy Banding. Let’s dive in and take a listen.

15.) Blood Villain – Slingshot Dakota

19.) Hate Again – Green Chapel
20.) Last Day Of May – The Red Telephone

I thought that would be appropriate today. Those two songs were from recent Live From Robot Dog Sessions. I have a lot more coming soon. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
