Song before Take A Long Line – Angel City

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s been cold outside so let’s play the seasonally appropriate next song from the Grim Work album, that I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week.

1.) Baby, Let My Money Keep You Warm – Milton Busker And The Grim Work
2.) Hey You! – Jesse Taylor
3.) Running To The Mirror – Alice Austin
4.) Fire And Oil – Peg Tassey MUSIC

Let’s send lots of good wishes out to Peg. She had surgery today and made it through fine, but let’s send a little healing energy anyway. Great song from Alice’s newest EP Dirt And Helicopters. Cool new song from Jesse and a lovely song about working too much and letting your money enjoy the life that you should be enjoying, but you can’t ’cause you have to work all the time. It’s a very American song. OK, let’s rock. This band are playing tomorrow at The Monkey House.

5.) Sky – The Nancy Druids
6.) Sit Right Down – Ryan Ober and The Romans
7.) Dragged Around The Universe – Queen Tangerine
8.) Loser – SWALE

Such a great song from such a great band. Don’t we all feel dragged around the universe sometimes. QT only played for a year or so, but put out a terrific album. Ryan and his band will join the Druids and Happy Spangler at the Monkey tomorrow and that should be a great show. OK, it’s almost Christmas time. I’ll play a bunch of holiday songs next week, but I’ll ease my way in with a few songs about red and green.

9.) Ruby Red – Aaron Flinn
10.) Grass Is Always Greener – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
11.) Green Apple Girl – Dave Jarvis Band
12.) My Red – The Lavas

I caught the Lavas at Club Toast one night and they were awesome. Cool song from Dave. Great song by Phil and the band. Lovely song from Aaron. OK, here’s another song about red, and fine, I’ll break down, here are a couple of Christmas songs.

13.) Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer – Savage Hen
14.) Here Comes Santa Claus – Savage Hen
15.) Jingle Bell Rock – Savage Hen
16.) The Wrong List – Savage Hen

Thanks Hen for a lovely heavy set of songs about Christmas and other fun topics. They will be at Nectar’s on Monday. OK, here is another song about red.

16.) Black & Red – ROUGH FRANCIS
17.) Bulletproof Vest – Zola Turn
18.) Burn – Dirty Blondes
19.) Coast To Ghost – Doom Service

Cool rocker from Doom. They will be at Gloom Garden on Monday. Great rocker from the Blondes. ZT rocked us hard in the ’90’s. Francis are playing their 10 year anniversary show at the Monkey House on Saturday. They are such wonderful people and such a great band. We’re lucky to have them. OK, this song is not about red.

20.) It’s Purple And It Sparkles – Zola Turn
21.) A Different Machine – Elephants of Scotland
22.) Winter Bender – Jessica Rabbit Syndrome
23.) Terrarium – Vedora

Lovely song from Vedora. Seasonally appropriate song form Jessica. I had a tricky situation at work recently, but we all took a deep breath, figured out a plan to move forward, and executed it nicely. I think that’s a good path to take in this busy stressful holiday season. OK, let’s keep rocking.

24.) Full Speed Ahead – Midnight Vigil
25.) Full Tilt – Lush Honey
26.) Mirror Mirror – Joe Adler
27.) Down By The Riverside – Bob Wagner

Great song by Seth. You can catch him most anywhere in Vermont at most anytime. Cool rocker form Alice, with a bit of help from Sean Toohey on lead guitar. Riverside is from the Big Tiny Love album released to raise money for the neo-natal care unit at the UVM Children’s Hospital. They are releasing the album Sunday at 4pm at The Skinny Pancake Burlington. It should be a good show, though I’m sure I’ll be working. Joe will be at Radio Bean on Saturday. Honey will come to town and play for us at Nectar’s next Wednesday. Cool song from Vigil. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Jason Baker

I had a great time seeing music Wednesday night at The Double E. I had been meaning to catch up with singer songwriter Jason Baker and the timing ended up perfect, so I took a drive out to Essex. I grabbed some food at The Mad Taco and chatted with Eric Koval for a bit. I finished eating just in time to head through the open door into the old small movie theater room as Jason began playing America Dreams. He played a cool version of A Locally Specific Blues then a song about holding on to the truth. The next band got up for a few songs. Kip de Moll sang and played acoustic guitar and was joined by Jesse Cowan on bass, Ian Koeller on drums, and Joe Sabourin on lead electric guitar. They had a sweet sound with a solid rhythm and Joe alternated between quietly ripping leads and searing slide. They sang about raising your voice and rejoicing. They played a song about dressed up blues and one about an aloof cat. Jason returned and told fun stories. He sang a dual use song, the entirely familiar Film At 11 then one about the post-millennial blues. Kip and the band returned to the stage with a countryish song about leaving in the morning since it would hurt more if he stayed. Joe’s slide guitar was sweet on the song about sitting in the perpetual motion of the ocean of life, then they found a Dead like feel on one that is only over when it’s done. Jason returned for a song with super-fast lyrics about an old time breakdown. Say Now was about people who misuse words then he told us about someone else’s situation. He then pulled out a cover about Buddha and about how you’re gonna hurt. Kip returned solo for a song about being hard pressed to know what I would do without you and the band returned in the middle of the song and rocked it a bit. They sang about how playing music makes life worth living, about how sometimes a hero gets left out in the cold, and about sitting by the window. Jason came back for a song about fighting for your right to live in the light. He sang a song to help aliens understand us about how we are apes with cars and guns and money. He closed with a tribute to Lou Reed with a song about taking it into the light. Kip and the band came back for a song about wondering who knows where love goes then they followed it with one about reaching out and trying. They played one about a broken mirror then Joe came to the front to sing one. It was about leaves beginning to fall and his voice was very nice.

That wrapped up the show. I hung out and chatted with Eric and Jason for a bit then Eric showed me the larger T-rex theater room they can use for big shows. It’s a pretty cool place and I’m sure I’ll be back in the near future

Song before: Piano Music – Porcupine Tree

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve been enjoying the new album Hardly Electronic from this opening band, so let’s begin with some piano music.

1.) In The Key Of Me – The Essex Green
2.) When The Nights Get Long – Carraway
3.) Cascade – Andriana Chobot
4.) Adventure Safari – The Mountain Carol

It was so cool when Carol came in for a session of Live From Robot Dog Studio and instead of playing the electronic keys, Bruce played Ryan Cohen‘s sweet sounding piano. Great song from Andriana. I caught a couple of sets of her music last Friday at Red Square. She was as amazing as always. Great song and huge build from Carraway and super cool song form Essex. OK, the big event in town this weekend is Grace Potter’s Grand Point North festival. Be sure to get there early. Here are some of the great bands who are opening the show.

5.) Falter – Julia Caesar
6.) Soul No. 5 – Caroline Rose
7.) The Violent Stain Of My Bleeding Heart – Seth Yacovone Band
8.) Flaca Daza – Miku Daza
9.) Loose Tooth – Clever Girls

All of those bands are going to rock GPN hard. Caroline has gotten big but spent a lot of time in town. I’m so excited for both days and will be there early. I saw Clever Girls play a brilliant show last weekend at Art Hop. This next band came on after and played a blistering show. Last week, I played the last song on The Uncanny Doom Service, so let’s begin playing MSP3 Counter Attack, song after song, week after week, until it’s wrapped up.

10.) Big Box Law Enforcement – ROUGH FRANCIS
11.) Still Life Scene – Envy
12.) Whirlpool Rider – The High Breaks
13.) Mighty Have Fallen – Barbacoa

They played a brilliant show at Robot Dog Studio last week and that song really caught me. Cool new song from the Breaks. Classic from Envy. Great song from Francis who use the new album to stare racism in the face and offer peace and love as a counter attack. This song has been running through my head lately, so hopefully it will get stuck in your too.

14.) Automatic Sweetheart – Hammydown
15.) On My Way – Hover
16.) Veratrum – Piqued
17.) Fool That I Am – Eastern Mountain Time

Cool song from a band who have lots of shows scheduled all around Vermont. I wanted to revisit the song from Piqued, since it’s so cool. I hope they stop by town soon. Classic from the ’90’s from Hover. Great song from Hammy. OK, this next artist has put out a few cool albums but when he plays with his band he sounds just a little different. Here’s a song form his upcoming album.

18.) Gravity – Milton Busker & The Grim Work
19.) Loser – SWALE
20.) Underheard – Ivamae
21.) Silent River – Steady Betty

Betty’s songs always put me in a happy place. I hope it does the same for you. Great song from Ivamae. When I think of happy songs with depressing lyrics, I think of Swale. I think Milton is proving himself just as able. OK, last night I finally caught up with this singer in a movie theater at The Double E. This song digs into the pros and cons of life in America in a visceral way. The song after is the story of a kid asking mom why she would bring a child into this world. I think you’ll like the answer.

22.) Which America – Jason Baker
23.) Love – Hana Zara
24.) The Divine Feminine – Ouzkxqlzn
25.) Super Powers – The Dead Shakers

I love that song from the Shakers. I caught Lauren Costello playing at Art Hop, and despite calling her band an unpronounceable name, she is completely amazing. Hana asks mom why she was brought into the world. Mom says to fill you with love and to send you into the world to spread it. Great, if somewhat harsh, song form Jason. OK, he finished this year’s library tour, but has begun to book next years. What a cool way to support Vermont’s libraries.

27.) This City – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
28.) Give It Up To The Night – Bad Smell
29.) Infinity Pools – The Smittens
30.) Ghosts – Troy Millette Music
31.) Rainy Alley – Totally Submerged

Wishing the best for the people in the Carolina’s. Cool song from Submerged. Great song from Troy. I’m loving the new Smittens album City Rock Dove and expect to keep diving deeper. Super cool song from Smell and great song from David. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
