Swale 016

Tonight’s local music radio show will run from 9-11pm US eastern time April 6, 2017. It will go as follows.

Song before: Bobcaygeon – The Tragically Hip

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin tonight with a couple of songs about lion taming.

1.) Just Another Day – The Nancy Druids
2.) Lion Tamer – Carraway
3.) Black 17 – The New Siberians
4.) Parking Lot – Villanelles

Villanelles keep playing that song for us. Thanks guys. Great song from Siberians. Considering the line from the Druids song, I just had to follow it with the Carraway. OK, here is the next song on By My Side.

5.) I Do – Kat Wright
6.) Crazy – Clever Girls
7.) Trouble Come No More – Cricket Blue
8.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass

Gregory is coming to Higher Ground on Sunday. Thanks for sponsoring our station HG. Cricket will open that show. Great songs from Clever and Kat. Do you ever travel just for the ride?

9.) Ever Travel – The Red Telephone
10.) Drivin’ All Alone – The Parts
11.) Moving Song – Zola Turn
12.) Wally Rides The Ferry – Zoot Wilson

Great song from the ’80’s. Zola Rocked us in the ’90’s. Telephone rocked us in the 00’s and the Parts are rocking us now. So, if you like punk head to Jim’s basement on Saturday for these next two bands.

13.) Blank Daze – Mr. Doubtfire
14.) Blue Lights – Sink or Swim
15.) Blue Light Shines – Gabrielle Douglas and the Dwellers
16.) Something I Drew – farm

It was fun chatting with Brent Hallenbeck last night about our local music scene. I was on Rocket Shop on Big Heavy World last night to announce that all of my show write-ups, past and future, will be part of BHW. Brent was a great host and we both liked Farm and The Cush. We were sad that Farm went away but happy about how they morphed into The Mountain Says No.

17.) Gazerbeam – The Mountain Says No
18.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget
19.) Every Last One Of Us – SWALE
20.) The Heart Is King – Pinhead

Pinhead helped open Burlington up to the wide variety of music that exists today. Great song from Swale. I want to send lots of love to Eric Olsen who just lost his mother. Our hearts go out to you Eric!!! Great take on the Stones song by Bridget and great rocker from Mountain. This next band was the first to really turn me on to our local music scene, so many years ago.

21.) Happy New Year – Ninja Custodian
22.) Decide – Dave Jarvis Band
23.) The Original Original – Black Rabbit
24.) Round Sum – Cave Bees

The Bees come out to rock us now and then, and have been doing so for years. Rabbit always put on fun shows. Dave rocked us back in the ’90’s and has a new band called Agent 802. I love Ninja. OK, let’s stay in the past for a bit.

25.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
26.) Holly Mae – The Snaz
27.) Bridge To Panda Chaos – Zeus Springsteen
28.) Six Inch Knife – Will
29.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow

Great song from the Rutland band. They morphed out of Will who played around in the 00’s. I can’t wait to see Zeus again and hear what they are recording. Super cool song from the Snaz and fun rocker from Decentz. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Joan Crawford – Blue Oyster Cult

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s been another cold and warm and clear and snowy week in Vermont. That does not stop us from doing what we do. I want to dedicate this first song to Rich Haskell and anyone who likes to get in their car and drive, no matter what.

1.) Driving All Alone – Danny LeFrancois
2.) Freeway – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
3.) Silence Kills – Secret Heliotropes
4.) I’ll get Wise – Anachronist

Great song from the central Vermont band. I’d seen Heliotropes listed on show bills but have never seen them. That may have to change. Great songs by David and Danny. OK, last week I finished the last song on Shovel Down so now I need to play a new album, song after song, week after week until it’s done. Let’s begin with the title song from the new album by Kat Wright Official

5.) By My Side – Kat Wright
6.) Last Love – Myra Flynn Music
7.) Secret – Madaila
8.) Freak Out Friday – Rue M.

Rue pop up now and then to help us dance dramatically. Great song from Madaila. Myra is a true treasure. So are Kat and the band, as you will hear over the next several weeks. OK, let’s keep the flow going.

9.) Unveiled – Pours
10.) Strings – Binger
11.) Gazerbeam – The Mountain Says No
12.) The Revenge Of Vera Gemini – The Contrarian

Casey Merlin Rae used to sing in bands and write about music in town and was just back a couple of weeks ago to sing for the Rocketsled reunion. He was good friends with Sandy Pearlman and just put out an album of Blue Oyster Cult covers. That was one of them. Great new song from Mountain from the upcoming Golden Landfill album. Great songs from Binger and Pours. Since I just played a cover song, I think I will continue for the next set.

13.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget
14.) Breathe – Ninja Custodian
15.) Is It My Body? – Peg Tassey MUSIC
16.) ETI (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) – The Contrarian

I just had to play another Contrarian song. Classic cover of the Alice Cooper song by Peg. Ninja always did some fun covers. That’s a great take on Pink Floyd. Great cover of the Rolling Stones song by Bridget. So, The Snaz just released a new album called Sensitive Man.

17.) Spit N’ Fluff – The Snaz
18.) We’re Closed – Blue Button
19.) Blind Pigs – ROUGH FRANCIS
20.) This Ain’t The Summer Of Love – The Contrarian.

The Francis song has the line about I thought it was the summer of love so I had to play another Contrarian song. Francis will play Higher Ground tomorrow and Blue Button will open. Snaz played there last week. Thanks HG for sponsoring us at WBKM.ORG. This next band are from Montreal but will return to The Monkey House on Sunday.

21.) Epic – Laureate
22.) Room To Grow – The Red Summer Sun
23.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service
24.) Rejected – Black Rabbit

The last time I saw Laureate Rabbit opened the show. Doom and Red Summer are playing with them on Sunday. OK, let’s go back to the 1990’s.

25.) Sunflower Street – David Jarvis
26.) Who Do You Love? – The Red Newts
27.) Angela Carter – Cricket Blue
28.) God On Our Side – Wire Train

Back in the early ’80’s Wire Train came and played Hunt’s a few times and I had a great time seeing them. That’s a great cover of the Dylan song. Cricket are just so amazing. I should have played an original Newts song but thought that was fun, and I’m playing covers anyway. They are at Sidebar tonight. Great song from Dave. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: The Last Of The Unplucked Gems – The Tragically Hip

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to begin by thanking Higher Ground for sponsoring our station and for reuniting Rocketsled for a show on Saturday. Today is a historic day and tomorrow will be our first day with a new President. I hope this opening set fits our mood.

1.) Whole World Hangs – Anachronist
2.) This Machine – Invisible Homes
3.) Jackbooted Thugs (Have All The Best Drugs) – Anders Parker
4.) Freeway – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

That’s a great song about protesting. We will likely need that a lot in the next few years. I want to send that out to all of the women who will march on Washington DC this weekend. Great song from Anders. Great Woody reference by Homes and great song from Anachronist. OK, here is the next song on Shovel Down.

5.) Mistake – Seth Yacovone Band
6.) Today Is Tomorrow – The Red Telephone
7.) Storm Cloud – When Particles Collide
8.) The Circus – Cold Sweat

Sweat used to play at Texas and other clubs around VT and upstate NY. I wanted to play that one in response to the closing of the Ringling Brothers circus. Particles are playing at Manhattan Pizza and Pub on Saturday and always rock. Sean from RT now plays in The Nancy Druids and they were amazing last night at Radio Bean. Great song from Seth. OK, let’s keep rocking.

9.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit
10.) Eggshell – The Mountain Says No
11.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service
12.) Time To Get Out – Aaron Flinn and Salad Days

Great rocker from the all around wonderful Aaron. Great rocker from Doom. Great new song from Mountain! Rabbit rock so hard and are always fun. The days are still short and the nights are still long and this song just feels right.

13.) Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot
14.) When The Nights Get Long – Carraway
15.) Not Quite As Good – 1881
16.) This Isn’t Your Parade – Crazyhearse

Such a fun song from their Tordadic Beige album. Great new song from 1881’s Action EP. I love the huge sound on both the Carraway and Andriana songs. This next song is from a bunch of wonderful local artists who recorded this song to support the candidacy of Bernie Sanders.

17.) This Land Is Your Land – Various Artists
18.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 VT Artists
19.) Secret – Madaila
20.) You’ve Got Problems – Kat Wright

Great song from Kat and the band. Madaila likely have nothing to do with the band the Medallions who are playing at the oath of action day at The Skinny Pancake Burlington tomorrow but stop in and find out for yourself. Great message from Bernie and all the wonderful artists. OK, let’s rock.

21.) All My Life – Wide Wail
22.) Don’t Turn Back – Kelly Ravin
23.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy

26.) The Territory – Hana Zara
27.) Make It Work – The New Siberians
28.) Tha Critic – Ninja Custodian
29.) Ninjas Vs Zombies (Let’s Keep Our Heads) – Phil Yates

Tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM will go as follows:

Song before: Time Warp – Rocky Horror Picture Show

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring our station. I heard the Shellac show was great last night and Dweezil is playing on Sunday so that is cool. It’s just been so lovely around town lately with lots of sunny days lighting up the foliage. It makes me think of this song.

1.) Blue Sky – Black Rabbit
2.) Nightingale – 1881
3.) Good Times – Grand
4.) Last Night – Carraway

Great fun brand new rocking song from Carraway. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album when it comes out. I just got Grand’s EP and it rocks nicely. 1881 just put out their second EP Camera. The first was called Lights and the third will be Action. Hmmm, Black Rabbit. OK, let’s play the next song from the Invisible Homes album Song For My Double.

5.) The Lie – Invisible Homes
6.) Fa Fa Fanta – WE Are The Asteroid
7.) Desert – Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re
8.) Golden Goose – Cave Bees

Bees played a great version of that one last night at ArtsRiot. They were joined by Tsu and Asteroid. They have been touring together and recorded one of each others songs. Desert is really an Asteroid song and Fa is a Tsu song. I though it would be fun to play those two. Great song by Homes. These next three bands will rock Nectar’s next Tuesday.

9.) Losing Control – Mr. Doubtfire
10.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service
11.) Getting Laid In New Hampshire – Better Things
12.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight

I miss Doll Fight. I’m glad they left us lots of music before breaking up. Nectar’s should be fun next Tuesday!! OK, let’s keep rocking.

13.) Burn – Dirty Blondes
14.) Can’t Feel It – Vetica
15.) Screwball – Screaming Broccoli
16.) Not True – Peg Tassey MUSIC

Peg and Broccoli used to rock our town in the late ’80’s and ’90’s. I love that Vetica song. The Blondes will host a huge party at Nectar’s on election night so come on out if you do not want to be alone. This next song is a Burlington classic.

17.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
18.) Paint With The Sun – Arc Iris
19.) Cascade – Andriana Chobot
20.) Vicarious – Alice Austin

Great song from Alice. I’m loving the Andriana album. Arc played a great show on Saturday at Signal Kitchen. Hmmm, The Cush. This next band play in town a lot and always put on a great show.

21.) Kick Rocks – And The Kids
22.) The Territory – Hana Zara
23.) Terrarium – Vedora
24.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws

Persian are fun and are Barbacoa when Dee joins them. Great song from Caroline Marie‘s band. Hana played a great show a while ago and I can’t wait for her new album. OK, let’s listen to a little evolution in action.

25.) Chop Wood/Carry Water – Zola Turn
26.) Dragged Around The Universe – Queen Tangerine
27.) Void – The Lavas
28.) Popular Crowd – SWALE

Swale are going to dress up as Black Sabbath and play the Paranoid album the Saturday before Halloween. Alice Austin and Julia Austin were in Zola then changed the band to Queen then to the Lavas, so I thought it would be fun to listen to those three together. OK, there’s not much time left. On Saturday lots of musicians will assemble for Ladies Rock Lotto Fall 2016 and will form bands in the morning and perform later that night. It’s a benefit for Girls Rock Vermont. Here are a couple of songs by prominent supporters Linda Bassick and Samara Lark Brown.

29.) Super Sexy Science Party – Wave of the Future
30.) Tell Me – Linda Bassick
31.) High Water Mark – Belizbeha

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I got a little extra organized and have tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM all lined up. It will run from 9-11pm US Eastern Time and will go as follows:

Song before: Alone – Children in Paradise

Intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring our station. They have lots of shows happening this week and have Built to Spill playing tonight. Let’s begin tonight with some huge sweeping songs in honor of all of those people in our community who have huge sweeping hearts.

1.) Teenage Mother Earth – The Red Telephone
2.) Breathing In – The Hero Cycle
3.) If You Get Lost – SWALE
4.) Cascade – Andriana Chobot

Cascade has such a huge luscious sound. Same for Lost. Swale will be playing Saturday at The Monkey House with The Nancy Druids. Sean from the Druids also plays in Telephone so it’s going to be a great night of music. I will be out of town, but more on that later. Great song from Hero. On a more somber note, this week the Burlington community lost one of it’s funniest and most treasured people. I loved all the wry posts that Mike McGonegal shared with us and I got to meet and hang out with him a few weeks back at a Silver Bridget show. I’m going to play three of their instrumental songs to pay a quiet tribute to Mike, and to all of the people who have left this life. I invite you to join me.

5.) Old Man – Silver Bridget
6.) She’s Leaving Home – Silver Bridget
7.) Harvest Moon – Silver Bridget

It was fun seeing them that night and having Mike help me identify which song they were playing. He will be greatly missed by our community. Since we are in a contemplative mood, let’s play the next song from the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. Here is the next one from Song For My Double.

8.) Contemplating The Ivory – Invisible Homes
9.) Little Monster – Strange Machines
10.) What If – Madaila
11.) What If – REDadmiral

I had to play those two back to back. They are obviously quite different songs. Machines will be at Nectar’s tomorrow. Homes play so many great styles of music. That’s a song from Madaila’s new album Traces. Admiral are at The Monkey House Tonight. So is this next band.

12.) Ninjas Vs Zombies – Phil Yates
13.) Restaurant – The Mountain Says No
14.) Emerald – Ace Frehley
15.) Hey Ernie – Cold Sweat

When I was younger some friends and I would drive all over Vermont and New York to go see Sweat. We’d see them in Glens Falls and Clifton Park and places like that. I have tickets with my brother Ken to see Ace on Saturday in Clifton Park, NY so that should be fun. I believe that Lizzy cover is in the setlist. Great rocker from Mountain and fun song from Phil. I saw this next band last week at Foam Brewers

16.) Medieval Knieval – Barbacoa
17.) Say It – Anachronist
18.) Falter – Chin Ho
19.) Green Apple Girl – David Jarvis

It sounds like Dave is getting the band back together soon. Great classic from Chin. Great song from Anachronist. Barbacoa always rock. OK, let’s keep rocking.

20.) Sally – Daniel Waterhouse (Dan Murphy)
21.) Windigo – Crazyhearse
22.) The Day I Met You – Dirtminers
23.) A Different Machine – Elephants of Scotland

Great rocker from Elephants, who are really from VT. Great rockers from Dirt and Crazy and cool song from Dan. OK, there’s just a little bit of time left. Let’s keep rocking.

24.) 88 – Wave of the Future
25.) 22R – Cave Bees
26.) Black, Blue and White – The New Siberians
27.) I Am Sunday – The Red Telephone

I thought I’d end where I began. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town, let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Against The Rain – TILT

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM went as follows:

recording begins
Song before: Alone – Children in Paradise

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to begin by thanking Higher Ground for sponsoring us here at the station. They have Smooth Antics playing tomorrow if you want to check that show out. There has been a lot of music about lately so let’s begin with a guy who played a solo show last Sunday at Radio Bean.

1.) Grass Is Always Greener – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
2.) Make Me See Stars – The Lonestar Chain
3.) Black 17 – The New Siberians
4.) The Last Of The Unplucked Gems (live) – The Tragically Hip

I saw music Saturday night and Sunday night so it was not until Monday that I watched the full last concert from The Hip. It was powerful and poignant. The have played in town many times and have played all over Vermont. All of their shows were great and they put a ton of beautiful music into our world. I cannot thank them enough. That new song from the Siberians has been stuck in my head since the album came out. I see no signs of it stopping soon. Great song from the Burette Douglas solo band. I love that Phil song and it was cool to see the stripped down show on Sunday. OK, here is the next and last song from Giant Places. It’s been so warm and sunny and everyone is driving around with the windows down.

5.) Windows Down – Lendway
6.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
7.) This Machine – Invisible Homes
8.) Love, Like Language – Happy Abandon

Happy played a stunningly great show at Foam Brewers last Friday. Homes followed and put on a great show too. Milton has a brilliant new album and is playing next Thursday at the Fairgrounds (???). OK, let’s rock. Better Things just released a new album called Getting Worse. This is the fist song.

9.) Getting Laid In New Hampshire – Better Things
10.) Carnage – Black Rabbit
11.) Lunacy – Cave Bees
12.) Ex-Files – Better Things

I’m psyched to check out Better Things on Saturday at 242 Main. I just checked out their new album and it’s really cool!! Bees played a stinging show at The Monkey House last Saturday. They were joined by Black Rabbit and Zeus Springsteen. Rabbit closed with that rocking song. Hmmm, Better Things. This next band are playing Saturday at the Enosburg Opera House.

13.) StatistiK – The Mountain Says No
14.) Blind Pigs – ROUGH FRANCIS
15.) U Thought U Ne Funk (intro) – DJ A-Dog
16.) Unveiled – Pours

I wanted to play the Pours song song for two reasons. One: It’s quite good and I like it. The second is that their drummer Chris Shar has had physical issues for years, and drummed his heart out for us for years anyway. He just started a Go Fund Me campaign to get a mobility device so he can get out and about more easily. He’s given a lot to us. It’s time for us to give back, if we can. DJ A-Dog passed away a few years ago but put a stamp on this town, and now there is a giant party every year for him. This happens all around town on Saturday. Tons of DJ’s and MC’s will play but a few bands, like Rough Francis, will play too. Forest Gray will play and this next band will play too.

17.) Colorful Girls – Dwight & Nicole
18.) Paint With The Sun – Arc Iris
19.) Scared – The Tragically Hip
20.) Science Fiction – Hana Zara

Hana move to Nebraska a while ago but is back in town tonight to enchant us with her beautiful music. I love that Hip song and and they did a great version of it at the last show on Saturday. Arc just released a new album full of songs they keep playing in Burlington. OK, let’s celebrate the return of Hana with a set of her songs.

21.) Santa Anna – Hana Zara
22.) Lithuania – Hana Zara
23.) Meghan’s Song – Hana Zara.

I love her music and her imagery and the way she lets her songs unfold around us. OK, time for a couple more. Let’s go out in style.

24.) Grace Too (live) – The Tragically Hip
25.) New Orleans is Sinking (live) The Tragically Hip

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM in the Champlain Valley and broadcasting online on our Facebook Page WBKM, or at our website WBKM.ORG will go as follows:

Song before: The Crystal Ship – The Doors

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s been a great week in Burlington with temperatures finally in the 70’s and 80’s and it’s so easy to get out and to do whatever you want. It’s so great to feel that freedom. One symbol of freedom that many people use as an allusion is the ship. Going to sea and setting yourself in a dance with nature is classic symbol throughout literature. Let’s begin with a song about ships.

1.) Ships – Anais Mitchell
2.) U Can Love If U Want To – Peg Tassey
3.) The Sea (Zach’s Song) – Francesca Blanchard

That’s a strong and gorgeous song from Francesca. Choosing to love is the ultimate Freedom. Thanks Peg Tassey MUSIC for explaining it so well. Great song from Anais. OK, let’s play the next song on Callisto.

4.) Find A Way – Alpenglow
5.) Storytellers – Slingshot Dakota
6.) Sun-Dipped Orphans And The Wizard’s Tea Pot – Elephants of Scotland
7.) Dancing In Dreamtime – Jerichovox

Beautiful song from the Jericho band. Something in Orphans reminded me of Dreamtime so I had to play them back to back. Great new song from Elephants. The new album called Break by Slingshot is still rocking my world. That’s another of the wonderful songs on that album. Great new song from Alpenglow. Last Sunday I had the usual bunch of friends stop over to watch Game Of Thrones. I know, I should have skipped it and went to Radio Bean to see REDadmiral, but just because I missed them, that doesn’t mean that you have to.

8..) Stop – REDadmiral
9.) Look At The Lilacs – Binger
10.) Stick That In Your Juicebox and Sip It – Better Things
11.) All My Life – Wide Wail

Classic rocker from Burlington’s ’90’s. BT did a great job opening for Slingshot at The Monkey House a couple of weeks ago. They played a great version of Juicebox that night. The lilacs are blooming and smelling fantastic and I love that new Binger song. Cool rocker from Admiral. So, I heard the coolest news last week. I went to Radio Bean to see The Nancy Druids and since Sean is playing in the band with Ann Mindell, and Julia Austin was hanging out at the show, Sean said that in July that Matt Hutton would come to Vermont and they will play an Envy reunion show!!! I think they were my favorite band from the ’90’s and I’m so excited! Here are a few songs from their album Distorted Greetings.

12.) Bloodboy – Envy
13.) Still Life Scene – Envy
14.) Bomb – Envy

I can’t wait to see them again! Yea! OK, on a different note, I’m in a bit of a melancholy mood, since it’s almost Memorial Day and last year on that day my uncle passed away. Hearing the news on Wednesday that Gordon Downie from The Tragically Hip was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer was pretty devastating. They have played Burlington many many times and have filled Vermont with their music for many years. They have a new album coming out and will do one more tour, which just amazes me. Here is a set of their music.

15.) Music At Work – The Tragically Hip
16.) New Orleans Is Sinking (live) – The Tragically Hip
17.) Fully Completely – The Tragically Hip

It’s sad and beautiful to think that we will get one more chance to see the mighty Canadian band. OK, let’s switch to some good news. Vermont artist Anais Mitchell did an album about her take on the Orpheus and Eurydice saga a few years ago. She called it Hadestown and it’s being performed in New York City off Broadway at the New York Theater Workshop. Here are a few songs from the album.

18.) Lover’s Desire – Anais Mitchell
19.) His kiss, the Riot – Anais Mitchell
20.) Doubt Comes In – Anais Mitchell
21.) I Raise My Cup To Him – Anais Mitchell

That is the ending of the Hadestown album. Well, there’s only so much time, so let’s play one more song.

22.) Extended Werewolf – farm

There’s only so much time indeed. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Songs after: Lost Plot (live) – Fish
