Swale 016

Tonight’s local music radio show will stream at WBKM.ORG and (FB) on Thursday July 13th from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows.

Song before: Do It Again – The Kinks

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington.  Last Friday Swale finally released their new album There’s No One Here.  It’s a double album with red vinyl and lots of amazing artwork.  There are a ton of fantastic songs on the album  Let’s begin tonight with what is almost the title song.

1.) Loser – Swale

2.) High Flying Bird – Anders Parker

3.) One From Two – Linda Bassick

4.) Lowdown – Vedora

Vedora rocked our town for a couple of years and Caroline is still out there making similar sounding music.  Great song from Linda.  Cool song from Anders album The Man Who Fell From Earth.  That’s such a fun and sad song from Swale.  They excel at that, as you will hear throughout the course of the evening.  OK, here is the next song on Action, the EP I am playing all the way through song after song week after week.  It’s the third EP in their “album” Lights, Camera, Action.

5.) Mass Murderer – 1881

6.) Cereal – Carraway

7.) Bird In A Cage – Swale

8.) The Nighthorses – The Cush

When listening to the new Swale album something about Bird reminded me of the Cush song so I thought it would be fun to play them back to back.  That’s an interesting way to spell the Carraway song.  Great stuff from 1881.  This next band are playing at Sidebar tonight.

9.) Taung Child Mastered – The Dead Shakers

10.) Spastic Tactics – The Edd

11.) Counting On A Ghost – Elephants Of Scotland

12.) Lead Me To Your Love – The New Siberians

Great song from Siberians Black Blue and White album.  Great song from Elephants.  Nice trippy song from the Edd who will play a show for us in a few weeks.  I loved the Shakers the one time I saw them.  Last night I went to Nectar’s and saw these two bands, and need to get some music from the other one who played.

13.) Cascade – Andriana Chobot

14.) Megaphone – Josh Glass

15.) Silver Dollars – Banana Schlitz

16.) Felon – Swale

Another great new Swale song that they have been playing at shows for a while now and I finally get to play it for you.  Banana will be at the Flynn Exposure series tomorrow at 5 or so.  Josh and Andriana were amazing last night.  Mal Maiz and Haley Jane were lots of fun too.  We are in the middle of summer and this song is so appropriate.

17.) Endless Sunkissed Lover – Gneiss

18.) Break A Leg – David Rosane And The Zookeepers

19.) Elevator – Swale

20.) It’ll Be OK – Let’s Whisper

I love how positive and fun that song is.  Super poppy song from Swale about a frightening event.  David and the band will be at American Flatbread next Wednesday.  Gneiss are at Red Square next Thursday.  Here is another song I have heard for a while around town that I now get to share with you.

21.) All Down Tonight – Swale

22.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler

23.) Catch And Release – Clever Girls

24.) Control – Ratboys

Ratboys are from Chicago and came and played a show on Saturday at Sidebar with Clever Girls.  Both bands were great.  Joe and his band played a great version of that one a week ago in Winooski.  Great song from Swale.  This next singer is performing tonight for the first time in ages and I could not be more excited!

25.) Boys Club – Peg Tassey

26.) 25 Mile Per Hour Blues – Better Things

27.) 22R – Cave Bees

28.) Drug Laws – Swale

I love how hard that song rocks continuously.  Bees and Things will be at the Monkey House on Saturday.  I love Peg.  I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town.  Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I had a great time seeing music last night at SideBar. I worked a 9-5:30 shift that was particularly challenging. I stopped at home for a bit and settled. I contemplated making two stops for the evening, since Cricket Blue and another band were playing at the Lamp Shop at 7, but realized it would be too tight to make it to the 8pm show that I had in mind. I was slow to get moving but got out the door around 7:30. It had rained all day but was sunny with blue skies so I thought I could skip the umbrella. I stepped out and it was raining so I stepped back in and grabbed it and took the lovely walk downtown. I swung by Mr. Mikes for a slice of Pesto then went one door down to the venue.

I got in and said a couple of hellos and ate as quickly as I could but the band were on a mission and took the stage. Clever Girls unleashed a screamed 1 2 3 4 and Loose Tooth rocked the reasonably full bar. They slowed things down for the intense 45 but towards the end that song just soars. A newer song called Catch And Release followed and I loved it as much as the last time I saw it. I did not recognize the next song but loved every note. The next song was called Get Out and had a smooth verse and a towering chorus. The final song of the night was called Hannah and it had a similar dynamic. Their songs are so beautiful and so intense and seem to always have a huge rock build to them. I loved every moment and want to go see them again soon.

Up next Ratboys came to visit us here in Vermont. They are from Chicago and are an indie rock band with a loud heavy sound. All of the songs had a unique rhythm and it was fun to follow along and try and keep up. I did not know any of their songs but enjoyed them all. They played songs about a man who walked a long way through the Antarctic or Arctic. They played a song about a cat that passed away in winter and could not be buried until spring, so it had to be stored in the freezer. The played Westside and The Record. I’m not sure how long they played or how many songs and just went with the flow and enjoyed it. They were a lot of fun and I would go back and see them again in a heartbeat if they pass this way again.

After the show I chatted with Winfield Holt for a while and said hi to Diane Jean then took the long walk home. It wasn’t raining at the beginning but the further I got into the old north end, the more the umbrella came in handy.

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Let’s begin with a Burlington legend who is getting one of her bands back together for a show next week.

1.) First Kiss – Peg Tassey MUSIC
2.) Trouble Come No More – Cricket Blue
3.) Many Things And Many Scenes – Joe Adler
4.) The Worst Part – Bethany Conner Music

It’s been a while since I’ve been lucky enough to hear Bethany play but I saw she had a show listed recently so hopefully she will come back to town soon. Joe and his band played a nice version of that in the rotary in the Winooski traffic circle yesterday. It’s a nice setup. Cricket are playing in Essex on Friday and at Light Club Lamp Shop on Saturday. OK, here is the next song on Lights, Camera, Action and is the first song on the Action EP.

5.) Not Quite As Good – 1881
6.) Loose Tooth – Clever Girls
7.) Freeway – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
8.) Giving Up The Ghost – Aaron Flinn

I just love that song by local legend Aaron. David will be at Switchback on Friday at 6. I’m working until 7 so it may not work out but check him out if you can. 14.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy
15.) Stratosphere – Joe Adler
16.) Strings – Binger

18.) Lonesome Lullaby – Gabrielle Douglas and the Dwellers

21.) Bridge To Panda Chaos – Zeus Springsteen
22.) Strawberry Blonde – Dino Bravo VT
23.) Hell Chicken – Swillbillie
24.) Into The Void – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)

Swale 016

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM Thursday June 22nd will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows:

Song before: You’ve Got Time – Regina Spektor

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Phish became so huge that a lot of people think of Burlington as a host to many jam bands, which we certainly have plenty, but we also have lots of diverse artists and some even think your song is too long.

1.) Your Song’s Too Long – Mr. Ray Fork
2.) Tell Me No – Clever Girls
3.) Fast – Chin Ho
4.) Terrarium – Vedora

I miss Vedora. What a beautiful song. Chin put a ton of music into our community in the 90’s. Nice rocker from the Girls. Ray Fork, you’ve just got to love him. OK, here is the next song on Camera.

5.) Dead End Street – 1881
6.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
7.) Bloodboy – Barbacoa
8.) Off To Be On – Near North

Cool song by the Vermont band. I should really try and catch up with them soon. Classic cover of the Envy song by Barbacoa. Bill Mullins and Kirk Flanagan from the band will play at Foam Brewers tomorrow as the Idles. Classic song from the Cush. Great song from 1881. This next set of music has a universal theme. It begins with not being able to get by, even though you are in the show.

9.) Soul Piggy Bank – SWALE
10.) I Got A Job – Maryse Smith
11.) Paycheck – Slingshot Dakota
12.) I Need A Raise – Cave Bees
13.) Rejected – Black Rabbit
14.) I Quit – Blotto

With the setup from the first song, I think you can see the flow of the theme from the song titles. Great songs, each and every one of them. OK, let’s keep rocking.

15.) Lion Tamer – Carraway
16.) Parking Lot – Villanelles
17.) Silence Kills – Secret Heliotropes
18.) Just Another Day – The Nancy Druids

I had to play that one because of the lion tamer reference. Cool songs from Heliotropes, Villanelles and Carraway. This next song is just great.

19.) Haze – gneiss
20.) Bury Me – Forest Gray
21.) Harvest Moon – Silver Bridget
22.) Easy Come – Split Tongue Crow

Great song from the Rutland band. Bridget are so wonderful. I caught up with Forest Gray at Radio Bean last Sunday and he put on a delightful show as always. Gneiss are at Martell’s in Jefforsonville tomorrow. OK, time to keep rocking.

23.) Spit N Fire Blues – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
24.) Showdown At The Blue Moon Hotel – Jerichovox
25.) Sequoia 3 – Binger

Great rocker by the very thoughtful band that Facebook won’t let me tag. Jerichovox are from Jericho VT and play cool songs. That song by Joe Adler and the band was recorded live at Nectar’s. OK, let’s keep rocking.

26.) Flypaper – Persian Claws
27.) Light’s Of Montreal – Lobot
28.) Strawberry Blonde – Dino Bravo VT
29.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire the Cannons

Cannons only existed for a couple of years but left us with some great songs. Dino will be at The Monkey House on Sunday with some other musicians to raise money for a good cause, so you should Show Up. Lobot were so much fun, and so were the Claws. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

10.) I Will – Camp Howard
11.) The Field – The Dead Shakers

14.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
