2.) Presence – Satori Bob
3.) Si Se Quema El Monte – Mal Maïz
4.) Who’s Your Fool – Kat Wright

Great song from Kat and the Band. Such a fun song from Mal. Presence was played in Burlington for a couple of years, about 25 years ago, but it’s description of the artistic condition still holds true. Cool song from Seth’s new album Life At Nectar’s. It’s great to know that he’s always there on Friday’s. OK, here is a real treat. Let’s head on over to Robot Dog Studio.

5.) Love Me Forever – Steady Betty
6.) Silent River – Steady Betty
7.) Practicing – Steady Betty
8.) Goodnight My Love – Steady Betty

Thanks for that great performance Steady! Linda Bassick wanted me to mention the great work that so many women musicians do with Girls Rock Vermont. Steady are solid supporters of their important cause. Thanks to Ryan Cohen for making us sound great, Sam Mark for helping with the set up, and thanks to Phoebe Zorn & Chrusty Barnacles for the film work. OK, here’s another treat. 9.) Shedding – Alice Austin
10.) Agree To Disagree – 1881

12.) Hope In the Dark – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

That’s from the new album Book Of Zoo. Their tour to raise funds and awareness for Vermont’s libraries has begun. The Zookeepers are in Enosburgh tonight and Peacham tomorrow. Great songs from Carraway and 1881. It’s so great that Alice is still making great music. OK, let’s keep rocking.

13.) Nothing Happened – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
14.) Running To The Mirror – Alice Austin
15.) Panic – Miku Daza
16.) Summertime – Peg Tassey MUSIC

Summer is raging here in Vermont. That’s such a great song from Peg. Miku will be at Light Club Lamp Shop on Tuesday with some other cool people. They rock so hard. Another great new song from Alice. That’s music to party to by Phil and the band. So, this week the sunflowers came out.

17.) Sunflower Street – David L Jarvis
18.) Always Monica – Chin Ho
19.) Blue Sky – Black Rabbit

23.) Mr Reed – Seth Yacovone Band

It’s so hot out, and has been since Sunday, I’m really beginning to wish for winter again. Great rocker from Seth’s full rock band. Great songs from Cannons and Doom. The days have been so hot lately that this song is welcome.

25.) Give It Up To The Night – Bad Smell
26.) Wanted For Cheap – Alice Austin
27.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
28.) Brother O Brother – Seth Yacovone

I want to send that out to my brother Ken and to send both of those to all of my brothers and sisters everywhere. Another great new song from Alice. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

2.) Redemption On Pearl – Milton Busker
3.) Done Waiting – The New Siberians

Another great song from the Siberians album Black, Blue & White album, which I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. These next two artists will be at ArtsRiot next Wednesday for a live recording for Big Heavy World.

5.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
6.) Forsythia – Cricket Blue
7.) Drink Myself Blind – Phil Yates and the Affiliates

Song before: The Man With The Child In His Eyes – Kate Bush

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington.  Today is my birthday so I’m going to celebrate by playing some of my favorite songs.  I hope you like them too.  If your band is not on tonight’s play list, it’s not that I don’t love you, it’s just I had two hours to pick music and I love far more than two hours worth. Every song on tonight’s list is one that I love.

1.) Angle Of The Sun – Peg Tassey
2.) Megan’s Song – Hana Zara
3.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
4.) Giving Up The Ghost – Aaron Flinn

Aaron is such a great guitar player and such a great guy and has a great voice and I love that song.  The Bern song has really gotten to me.  I love how easy to sing it is.  Hana is just stunning and that is such a touching song.  Peg has been one of my favorites for a long time and that is such a beautiful song, on so many levels.  OK, it’s time for the next song on Callisto.

5.) Been So Long – Alpenglow
6.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
7.) Sober – Vedora
8.) Release The Beast – The Mountain Says No

I remember thinking that was the greatest song I had ever heard by Mountain when I first heard it.  Now I feel that way about their newer songs that will be on their next album, but since it’s not recorded yet I had to play Beast.  Vedora used to play Sober a lot when they played shows after the first album came out.  I’m glad they got that one onto the second album.  I love the huge sound.  Brothers always just fills my heart with love.  I want to send that one out to my brother Ken.  That’s such a cool song from Alpenglow.  It’s been fun hearing them evolve.  So, on Tuesday night I went over to The Monkey House and saw four great bands.  I loved the sets from Tyler Daniel Bean and Better Things.  The Path opened the night with a killer punk set.  The other band who played are one that I have come to just love.  They come around once or twice a year and always play a blistering show.  I love every song on their new album and want to showcase them a bit right now.  Thanks for everything Slingshot Dakota!!

9.) Paycheck – Slingshot Dakota
10.) Until The Day I Die – Slingshot Dakota
11.) I-78 – Slingshot Dakota
12.) Break – Slingshot Dakota

I love the new album and that song especially.  When I first saw them I got a CD single with Day and 78 run together and still love those songs.  It’s like the idea of love flowing into the practice of love.  Paycheck is such a great song.  I was so psyched when they opened with it.  OK, let’s play a great rock and roll song.

13.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
14.) Satellite – Guster
15.) Sparks – The Color Exchange
16.) The Next Instead – Swale

I love so many of Swale;s songs.  Picking one was hard, but Next always gets me going.  Color came to town and played Nectar’s one night a year or so ago.  I’ve loved Sparks ever since.  Ryan Miller from Guster keeps turning up at cool local events.  Satellite is such a great song.  I love how it sounds back to back with Sparks.  Earthquakes always rocks me.  I’m beginning to really like a lot of songs on Binger’s new album, but this one from their last EP always lights me up.

17.) Sequoia 3 – Binger
18.) Symptom Of The Universe – Surf Sabbath
19.) Bulletproof Vest – Zola Turn
20.) Orange Like Water – The Cush

I was lucky enough to see The Cush many times when they lived in Vermont.  That is from their most recent album and it’s great to know they are still making great music and I can’t wait until the next time they are able to come back and enchant us.  I’ve always loved Zola and wanted to play Vest because it rocks so hard.  I love The High Breaks and their rearranged Sabbath songs are just wonderful.  Hmmm Binger.  Keep writing those great words and playing that great music.  This is a great song from one of the most elegantly powerful bands to come out of Burlington.

21) Somewhere Far – The Red Telephone
22.) Breathing In – The Hero Cycle
23.) 1965 – The New Siberians
24.) These Summer Nights – Sarah Blacker

We are on the cusp of summer and that one always reminds me of beautiful summer nights.  I’m 51 today and was born in 1965.  Hero are a band I caught a couple times in their short incarnation and love the sweep of their songs.  I love a lot of Telephone songs but that one was just calling to me.  On Monday, the Dirty Blondes are playing at Nectar’s.  I love them because they rock so hard.

25.) Ornan’s Song – Dirty Blondes
26.) TFAY – Elephants Of Scotland

I love that Elephant’s song.  Ornan plays drums for both bands.  I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town.  Let’s do it again next week.  Bye.  See Ya.  Sayonara.

27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

outro

Songs after: Garden Party/Market Square Heroes – Marillion

Tantalized – The Church

As always, I want to thank everyone who made tonight’s show on WBKM possible. Thanks to: Kate Bush, Peg Tassey MUSIC, Hana Zara, Aaron Flinn, Alpenglow, Joe Adler, Johnnie Day Durand, Vedora, Caroline Marie, The Mountain Says No, Andrew Frappier, Justus Gaston, Jedd Kettler, Ben Maddox, Slingshot Dakota, Carly Comando, Tom Patterson, Carly Comando, Phil Yates & The Affiliates, Phil Yates, Raph Worrick, Jacob Blodgett, The Color Exchange, Justin Ellis, SWALE, Tyler Bolles, Jeremy Frederick, Eric Olsen, Amanda Gustafson, Binger, Dalton Muzzy, Braden Winslow, Shakir Stephen, The High Breaks, Matthew Bryan Hagen, Todd Gevry, Kevin Lynam, Julia Austin, Alice Austin, The Cush, Burette Douglas, Gabrielle Douglas, The Red Telephone, Matt Hutton, The New Siberians, Brendan Devitt, Ted Pappadopoulos, Sarah Blacker, Dirty Blondes, Chris Clark, Rebecca Rogers, Diane Sullivan, Ornan McLean, Elephants of Scotland, Adam Rabin, John M Whyte, Dan MacDonald, Black Rabbit, Jane Boxall Percussion, Marc Scarano, Darlene Scarano, Fish, MARILLION – THE FISH YEARS, Marillion, The Church Band, Tony Gallucci, and everyone else!!!!

I had a fun time doing my local music radio show last night on 107.1FM and on the internet at WBKM.ORG. It’s just amazing how much great music we have in this town.

Song before: On The Air – Peter Gabriel

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last night I got a chance to go to WRUV and hang out while the Nancy Druids played live in the studio on their local music show Exposure. The Druids don’t have anything recorded yet, so let’s begin tonight with a song from Sean’s former band, and that will give you a hint of what they sound like.

1.) Teenage Mother Earth – The Red Telephone
2.) Paranoid – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
3.) The Next Instead – Swale

I love the sweep of the Swale song. They will play a fun show next week, but more on that later. The High Breaks play fun and intense surf rock, and recently rearranged several Black Sabbath songs into surf versions. They released them all for free on Bandcamp so I had to play one of the songs. Great song from Telephone. OK, it’s time for the next song on the Bernie Sanders EP that I am working my way through, song after song, week after week until I’ve played it all.

4.) Where Have All The Flowers Gone – Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont artists
5.) Forsythia – Cricket Blue
6.) Dreaming Too Much – Alpenglow
7.) Break – Slingshot Dakota

That is the title song from Slingshot’s brand new album. They are from PA but come to town to play on a regular basis. They will be at the Monkey House May 10th, Another great new song from Alpenglow’s new album Callisto. Cricket have shows coming up in March and April all around New England. I think they have new music coming soon too. So, a week from Saturday, there is a show at Higher Ground to show a movie that was recently made about ’90’s rock band The Pants. They will show the movie, ‘High Water Mark, The Rise And Fall Of The Pants” then Swale will be the house band and lots of local musicians will come up to play Pants songs. Here’s a few that will join in.

8.) High Water Mark – The Pants
9.) Help Wanted – Wide Wail
10.) Satellite – Guster
11.) Hit – Blue Button

Jason Cooley and Eric Olsen from BB will be at the show. Ryan Miller from Guster will be at the show. Amanda Gustafson from Wide Wail will be at the show, and Tom Lawson from the Pants will be at the show. I’m sure lots of others will be there as well. OK, the Surf Sabbath song was so fun, let’s play another.

12.) Children Of The Grave – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
13.) An Obscene Amount Of Debt – Sink Or Swim
14.) Politicians In My Eyes – Death

I was watching Vinyl last week and it was so cool when Politicians played. I thought it would be fun to pull it out this week. Great song from local rockers Swim. The Surf versions of Sabbath songs are so fun. Here’s a song I’ve always enjoyed.

15.) 1965 – The New Siberians
16.) Giving Up The Ghost – Aaron Flinn
17.) Finder – Madelines
18.) The Bomb – The Mountain Says No

Great song from Mountain. Finder is a classic from the ’90’s. Aaron is such a great guitar player and songwriter. The Siberians song just rocks. OK, let’s play another new Slingshot song.

19.) Monocacy – Slingshot Dakota
20.) The Call – Swillbillie
21.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz

Tight always gets me dancing around the studio. I hope you had fun with it too. Great strong song from Swillbillie. I love everything about that Slingshot song. This next song is a new one that has been getting me going lately.

22.) If I Knew – Binger
23.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
24.) This Land Is Your Land – VT artists.

Such a lovely version of that song from some of the area’s finest musicians. I love the lyric in the Bern song. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. I had great plans to see lots of music this week, but twisted my ankle on Friday and sat (with leg up and icepack on) out too much of it. It’s a bit better now so I should be all set soon. Today has been cloudy and cool and humid and I’ve been in a spacey sort of mood. Let’s take a trip through the last 30 years in town and start with Move Through Time by Persian Claws on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws
2.) Pauses – Black Rabbit
3.) Your Downtown Aperture – Video Pigeon
4.) All My Life – Wide Wail

Killer song from a classic band from Burlington’s glorious ’90’s. Some people say Burlington bands come in waves and there are times when there is not much around. Even in those troughs bands like Video Pigeon were around rocking beautifully. Killer new song from Rabbit. Great song from the Claws!! OK, let’s stay in the ’90’s for a bit.

5.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy
6.) Last Man Standing – Band X
7.) Jules Rosen and Joe Steel – Brave The Vertigo
8.) One More Grave – The Contrarian

Casey Merlin Rae used to play in bands in town, then wrote the music column for Seven Days and is now working in DC to help find ways for musicians to get paid for their music. Yea!! I really wanted to check out Vertigo at Radio Bean last night, but the ankle said no. Killer song from Band X who sort of evolved into Elephants of Scotland. OK, let’s go on to the next song on JV, the album I’m playing all the way through week after week, song after song.

9.) Who could Say – The Mountain Says No
10.) Mad Captain – Brother Zag
11.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara
12.) Abilene – The Lonestar Chain

I’ve been watching the flooding in Texas and saw a mention on the Weather Chanel of Abilene and thought of Burette Douglas and this song. Killer song from Hana. Zag is one of the known unknown cool artists in town. Mountain will be at Radio Bean on Saturday and I really want to make it to the show. I was thinking of checking out this next band when they played Summervale today, but walking down the hill away from the radio station was not going to happen today, short of an act from God.

13.) Dear God – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
14.) Dancing In Dreamtime – Jerichovox
15.) Holiday – Guppyboy
16.) Old Man – Will

Killer song from the Rutland band from the early 2000’s. When they broke up they became Thompson Gunner and Split Tongue Crow. Killer song from the classic ’90’s band. Jericho are playing around a bit and were really cool when I saw them a couple of months back. OK, let’s go back to the early ’80’s, or maybe ’70’s.

17.) At The Diner – Zoot Wilson
18.) 2012 – Lobot
19.) Waterlanding – Swale
20.) Ladders – Heavy Plains

Nice song from the super new band who will be at Nectar’s tomorrow. Swale and one other band will be there too. A few weeks back Chris Farnsworth gave me a collection of songs that Lobot had left over. That one was pretty cool. Hmmm, Zoot. This next band is the other one playing Nectar’s tomorrow.

21.) Ruffians – ROUGH FRANCIS
22.) Gas And Oil – Gas And Oil
23.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight
24.) Stop – REDadmirial

Admiral were at The Old North Ender last night. I had hopes of checking out some of them then heading to the Bean for Vertigo, but it was the couch and ice for me. I’ve got to go see them! Killer song from the 2000’s punk band. Gas was Beano Parker, from the Wards, side project and really rocked! OK, in classic Burlington style, this next band will be at the Bean at the same time as the Nectar’s show tomorrow. Rats!! I love this band.

25.) It’s Happening – Anachronist
26.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Sorry that none of my prerecorded breaks played last week. Tonight I’m in the studio for the full two hours. Let’s finish up playing Row, the great EP from Montpelier’s Anachronist. The last two are coming and the first is He’s Still There on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) He’s Still There – Anachronist
2.) Clouds – Anachronist
3.) Unveiled – Pours
4.) Never Satisfied – THE VACANT LOTS

The Lots played a killer show at the BCA center last week. Pours did a great job opening, and I loved Unveiled when they played it live. Clouds is pretty appropriate considering the grey rainy days we’ve been having in Vermont. Sometimes you have to realize that your surroundings can influence how you think, but it’s good to know there is a lot more happening. The sky looks grey, but the stars are out behind it. Thanks to Britt Shorter for hooking me up with the Pours album and the ticket to Alpenglow at the Universalist Church last Sunday. It was a gorgeously powerful show and this song really jumped out.

5.) Brothers In Crime – Alpenglow
6.) Star – The New Siberians
7.) You Make Me See Stars – The Lonestar Chain
8.) Hollywood – Lendway

It was good to see Michael Clifford at the Alpenglow show. Matthew Bryan Hagen will be playing with The Dark Side Of The Mountain playing Pink Floyd covers at Nectar’s October 31st and November 1st. Lonestar have a show November 4th. Vote first, then go see them. Binger are playing that night too. Word has it Brendan Devitt has a ton of new Siberians songs coming soon. Here’s a song from another Burlington star, who is in California at the moment. She has a new album coming soon too.

9.) Under Bright Stars – Alice Austin
10.) What’s In California? – Joshua Glass
11.) Gold In California – The Red Telephone

Great new song from RT! Love those guitars!! Great song from Josh! There is a series called live from the fort that some local artists are doing. I just saw a cool one from Maryse Smith where she played 3 songs and had 2 short interviews. It was pretty sweet. She played this one.

12.) 15 Steps – Maryse Smith
13.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
14.) Santa Anna – Hana Zara

Hana will play Radio Bean next Sunday, and always puts on a great show. Milton will play next Wednesday at the Bean and is always excellent too. Let’s pick up the pace and rock a bit.

15.) The Mime – Joe Adler
16.) Mississippi River – Gabrielle Douglas and the Dwellers
17.) Wave – Slingshot Dakota

Slingshot are finally coming back to town on November 1st. They are playing 242 Main. Great songs by Gabby and Joe. This next band are playing November 1st at Signal Kitchen, and have a killer new video out!

18.) Popular Crowd – Swale
19.) Neighborhood – Black Rabbit
20.) Ornan’s Song – The Dirty Blondes

The Blondes have an anniversary show coming up at Club Metronome on October 31st. Black Rabbit are likely playing there right now with Dino Bravo VT. I want to be there but I want to be here with you too. Decisions. It was so fun watching Ryan Miller teach Amanda Gustafson this next song when they played the Bean a few weeks back. He’s playing the November 1st show with Swale at SK.

21.) Satellite – Guster
22.) Might As Well Settle – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
23.) The Tranquility Bomb – The Cush

I’m so excited to see them on November 7th at Arts Riot. Phil Yates is playing Radio Bean on November 3rd. This next song contains a bad word, so if you are really sensitive, you may want to hit mute for the next 2 minutes. It’s not meant maliciously but to drive home the anger one feels when one has parked their car and found that it has been towed. This is a classic Burlington song.

24.) Tow Truck – David L. Jarvis
25.) Contact – Phish

I love the symbiotic lyric between those two songs. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
