Justin Panigutti, Swale, and Surf Sabbath at Nectar’s February 14, 2018   Leave a comment

I had a great time seeing music on Valentine’s Day at Nectar’s. I arrived a bit early and got some food and caught a few songs by Justin Panigutti. He played acoustic guitar and sang a song about how last summer got low down. He said some songs just find his guitar and played Sweet Melissa. He asked us to listen to his song about glory then played a couple of nice and big acoustic songs. He had a nice sound and I was happy I was there to listen.

Nathan Curtis arrived and we chatted for a bit then SWALE took the stage and rocked it hard. They played the whole Paranoid album by Black Sabbath to celebrate the holiday. From the heavy riffs of War Pigs through the spacey journey of Planet Caravan they sounded deep, rich and gloriously heavy. Hand Of Doom was great as it moved through it’s many changes. After Electric Funeral Amanda “Ozzy” Gustafson asked us to imagine all of the members of the band wearing stilettos and standing on Paul Ryan’s chest. Jeremy Frederick had a blistering drum solo in Rat Salad and they capped the night with a story of smoking and tripping and how Faeries Wear Boots. They did a wonderful job with that legendary album.

Up next The High Breaks donned their robes and played a set as Surf Sabbath. They opened with a doom and gloom instrumental version of Black Sabbath then brought the songs to full surf-rock speed. Children Of The Grave was nice and heavy then they took us Into The Void. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was fun then we rocked out to Hole In The Sky. All of the songs are performed without lyrics but Matthew Bryan Hagen had some commentary in between. He asked if we were feeling lovesick and said that might be a Symptom Of The Universe. They rocked out Wicked World and closed the night by dedicating a song to Swale and all that they accomplished that night. Paranoid was a perfect ending.

It was yet another amazing night of music in our town.

Silver Bridget at The Daily Planet and Surf Sabbath at Nectar’s December 6, 2017   Leave a comment

Silver Bridget pic by Tim Lewis

I had a great time seeing music a couple of Wednesdays ago. It was one of those nights when there were a ton of shows happening so I had to make some choices. I made a plan that would totally blow off one band I wanted to see, would let me see a partial set and a full set by another band and leave some open space for whatever might happen after.

I got going a little late as I was having a cool conversation with Mike Luoma and made it to The Daily Planet around quarter after 8. Silver Bridget were on and playing a lovely version of Only Love Can Break Your Heart as I settled into a seat at the bar. They played Surfer Girl, Blue Bayou and a couple of Beatles songs. Matt Saraca rocked the electric guitar on the take off section of Space Oddity as John Townsend‘s acoustic filled the melody and Johnnie Day Durand‘s musical saw soared over the top. They played a lovely version of Goodbye Yellow Brook Road then one of the restaurant patrons had a birthday and the staff sang to them. Bridget tossed a bit of Happy Birthday into Karma Police and made me smile. Over The Rainbow was as magical as ever and Nowhere Man was just great. They wrapped the set with The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. We chatted for a bit after then I shot out the door.

I walked into Nectar’s as Surf Sabbath were onstage and rocking hard. I’m pretty sure it was The High Breaks under the wigs and robes, but either way the surf instrumental versions of Sabbath songs were played with fun and gloom. I caught half of the first song and was just getting settled as they wrapped up the second. I found a spot up front as they lit into Hole In The Sky. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath followed and the audience was having fun. Paranoid was short and sweet and then they lit out into Wicked Ways. They played a blistering version of Symptom Of The Universe and closed the set with a super-heavy, yet still surfy, version of Black Sabbath.

After the set that exhausted feeling hit and I realized I was done. I should have hung out for the next couple of bands but was glad that I caught what I caught.

Song before: Beautiful Day – U2

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a heck of a day.

1.) Judgement Day – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
2.) Stormy Day – Robin Gottfried Band
3.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
4.) Just Another Day – The Nancy Druids

Any day in a well lived life can be any of the above. OK, let’s move on to the last song on the Surf Sabbath album. This is a surf rock mashup between Penetration by The Pyramids and Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath

5.) Sweet Penetration – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
6.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy
7.) Immigrant Trio – Soule Monde (Ray Paczkowski & Russ Lawton)
8.) Loser – SWALE

Great song by a band who specialize in speaking about hard feelings and who wrap their words in beautiful melodies. We all feel like losers now and then so make sure you have a few good friends to help you out of that feeling when you get there. Great music from Ray and Russ. Andy is a classic from the ’90’s. Cool surf mashup from the Breaks. I’ll start a new album to play all the way through in a couple of weeks. This next band just released a great new album. Here are a few songs.

9.) I Guess I’ve Had Enough Too – Eastern Mountain Time
10.) Since I Quit Drinking – Eastern Mountain Time
11.) There’s A Gary Stewart Song About This – Eastern Mountain Time

13.) Sit Right Down – Ryan Ober and the Romans
14.) Caveman Blues – Ryan Ober and the Romans
15.) Supernatural – Ryan Ober and the Romans
16.) Cemetery Walks – Ryan Ober and the Romans

Ryan’s been playing great music in our town for a long time and his new album is excellent. Last Saturday was WBKM’s 10th birthday party at Nectar’s. This next gentleman opened the night and played a great version of this song.

18.) I’ll Get Wise – Anachronist
19.) Under Bright Stars – Alice Austin
20.) The Night Syd Barrett Died – Colin Nicholas Clary

You should be yourself but if you ever want to be like someone else, being like Ryan is cool. Great song that name checks many local venues by Colin. We were so lucky to have Alice play in our town for so long. Great songs from Anachronist and Aaron. This next band just put out a brilliant new album called Justice Or Else.

22.) Skybot – Blowtorch

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM.ORG will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and can be streamed here: WBKM It will go as follows.

Song before: It Was A Very Good Year – Frank Sinatra

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last night I went to Radio Bean and saw a wonderful performance by this band.

1.) By Design – The Nancy Druids
2.) Totally Submerged – Totally Submerged
3.) Paranoid – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
4.) Drivin’ All Alone – The Parts

We’ll skip the Parts for a moment. That’s the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song. Great work making that Sabbath song sound like Surf rock. Cool song form Submerged who play all over Vermont all the time. The Druids played a beautiful version of that song last night. So, last Saturday was Radio Bean’s 17th birthday party and they did the usual thing where 80 or 90 bands played from 8am to 2am with 15 minute sets. The Parts kicked off the show. Most of the rest of the show is made of a few of the many bands who played.

5.) Every Time We Say Goodbye – Tiffany Pfeiffer and The Discarnate Band
6.) Faded Movie Reel – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
7.) The Birds Of Park Slope – Eastern Mountain Time
8.) My Old House – Andriana Chobot

Most of those bands played early in the day. This next set is a mix of bands who played early and later.

9.) True Hue – Ivamae
10.) Angela Carter – Cricket Blue
11.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
12.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget

Silver Bridget opened their set with a little bit of (When I Was Just Seventeen) It Was A Very Good Year then dropped it into Paint It Black. It was great. I missed Cricket and Milton but assume their sets were amazing. Ivamae was great and played a couple of new songs. This next band gave us a choice of this song or one that I did not know. They played the latter so I will play this song that they did not.

13.) Paper Doll – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
14.) Heat Sleep – Ryan Power
15.) Californ-i-A – Ryan Ober
16.) Gonna Stay Up All Night Long – Eames Brothers Band

I missed Eames and the two Ryans when I was in the other room seeing other bands but did catch the full Gators set. I just barely missed this next artist.

17.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
18.) Come Dance – Kat Wright
19.) Strings – Binger
20.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger

Joe and the Rangers put on a brilliant set. I want to send that out to my brother Ken and all of my brothers and sisters, ie you. Great songs from Binger, Kat, and Francesca. So, when Swale played they did mostly covers and opened with Amanda Gustafson singing the heck out of this song.

21.) Rebel Girl – Bikini Kill
22.) Popular Crowd – SWALE
23.) Trans Am – Barbacoa
24.) Juliet – Cave Bees

The Bees played a powerhouse version of that song. The tiny amount of Barbacoa that I caught was brilliant. If you listen to Popular and imagine that band singing Rebel you will have an idea of how Swale’s set started. This next band played an amazing version of this one.

25.) Destroying Everything They See – Blue Button
26.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
27.) Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT
28.) Purple Rain – Prince

On Saturday WBKM is turning 10 years old and celebrating at Nectar’s. Seth Yacovone will be there, Aaron Flinn will be there, The Full Cleveland will be there and a bunch of local artists will play Prince songs and be lead by Craig Mitchell. I hope you can stop by. Dino finished off the Bean birthday party. Hen played in the afternoon and Button were as amazing as always. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

29.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit
