Song before – Wiser Time – The Black Crowes

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin with an artist who played almost 4 hours last night at Red Square.

1.) Other Side Of The Rain – Robin Gottfried
2.) Waikiki – The Essex Green
3.) Pale Blue Dot – Sputoola
4.) Nature – Madaila

Great song from the people who have put so much fun music into our community in the last few years. Cool new song from Sputoola. It will be interesting to see where they go. Another cool song from Essex. Robin is such a great guitar player, and a pretty decent songwriter. OK, This next band will take over the Stone Church in Brattleboro on Friday and Saturday. Get into a nice relaxed state for this one.

5.) Notebook – The Edd
6.) Complex Vermont – Self Portrait
7.) If I Knew – Binger
8.) By Suicide – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

Another great song from the champion of the local library. If you ever feel that far down, please reach out to your friends. We care about you. Cool song from Binger that features Stephanie Heaghney on vocals. I caught her new band JUPTR this weekend at GPN. I’ll have to track down some of their music soon. Nice portrait of Vermont, both good and bad, from the rappers. Cool song from The Edd. OK, so this next band are legends in town. They have been playing for 16 years and will celebrate their birthday Friday at Light Club Lamp Shop. They have created some of the most gorgeous and powerful music that our state has seen. Let’s honor them in the only reasonably possible way.

9.) Overcoat – SWALE
10.) Armadillo – Swale
11.) Felon – Swale
12.) Soul Piggy Bank – Swale

Such beautiful songs. Maybe I should play some more.

13.) Cancer – Swale
14.) Black Boys On Mopeds – Swale
15.) If You Get Lost – Swale
16.) Waiting For You – Swale

From the initial trio of Amanda Gustafson, Eric Olsen, and Jeremy Frederick to the addition of Tyler Bolles Swale have graced our state with power that flows right into your heart. Mopeds is a cover of the Sinead O’Connor song. If you haven’t seen the amazing video that Eric put together, that highlights the staggering amount of violence against black people, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Is that all of the great songs that they have? I don’t think so.

17.) Waterlanding – Swale
18.) Good Medicine – Swale
19.) All Down Tonight – Swale
20.) The Next Instead – Swale

Such great music. If you don’t think I’m going to play 16 Swale songs to celebrate their sweet 16, you don’t know me very well.

21.) Elevator – Swale
22.) Everyone Likes To – Swale
23.) Popular Crowd – Swale

Happy 16th birthday Swale. Here’s to many more! OK, here is the next song on MSP3 Counter Attack.

27.) Junior – Clever Girls

Clever played a killer set at GPN. They will be at The Monkey House on Sunday and Nectar’s next Wednesday. Doom will be at Jim’s Basement on Sunday. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks

inro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. I can seen you and you are amazing. You are beautiful. You can let that shine into our world at any time. Let out your super powers.

1.) Super Powers – The Dead Shakers
2.) Interstellar Kid – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
3.) Chosen Names – Julia Caesar
4.) Girl, Friend – T-Rextasy

Rex are from New York but stopped by town last Saturday to play at the Ramble showcase down by North st and North ave. They were so fun. Julia opened that show. Great new song form Jeremy’s new album Threaded. I love that new song from the Shakers. More about that in a bit. OK, here’s a delightful song from a delightful band.

5.) Red Rose – The Zii Trees
6.) Don’t You Wanna Know – The Thursday Torys
7.) St Patrick’s Day – Carraway
8.) Morning Again – Doll Fight

I miss Fight. They rocked so hard. Super cool song form Carraway. Great song from the Torys new album Future Folk. I’m sure I’ll get more on the air in the next few weeks. OK, here is the next song on The Uncanny Doom Service album. It’s cool that they tossed in a couple of clips of the Twilight Zone episode that this song was written about.

9.) Monsters Are Due On Maple Street – Doom Service
10.) Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely – Black Rabbit
11.) Ornan – Dirty Blondes
12.) Chum On The Drums – Bee Bee Sea

I don’t know it for sure, but it really sounds like Sea are singing Ornan is a chum so I had to play it with the Blondes song to celebrate the wonderful person Ornan McLean. He’s been through more than anyone should have to go through lately. We love you Ornan. Great cover from Rabbit and great rocker from Doom. Is it really that easy to dupe us humans? Sigh. OK, relax, get nice and chill, get yourself in a happy mood and let’s go. Let’s take a dive into a new album called All Circles Vanish.

13.) Can You Take Me Back – The Dead Shakers
14.) Surfin’ Ain’t As Fun As It Used To Be – The Dead Shakers
15.) Headless – The Dead Shakers
16.) Taung Child – The Dead Shakers
17.) Websdr.ewi.utwente.nl-8901 – The Dead Shakers
18.) I Will Bow And Be Simple – The Dead Shakers

That is such a fun and trippy album. There’s a lot more to it but that’s a nice chunk. Thanks for being so amazing Kevin Bloom! OK, I’ve been playing a lot of short songs tonight. Let’s stretch out a little.

19.) Random Earth – Elephants of Scotland
20.) Lines And Spaces – The Cancer Conspiracy
21.) Purpose and Object – The Contrarian
22.) The Road – Anders Parker

That’s such an amazing song from Anders. Great song from Casey Rae. Cancer played around in the ’90’s and still do shows now and then. I’m not sure what’s happening with the Elephants now that Ornan is no longer drumming for them. Either way, that’s a cool song. OK, this next band played the Ramble show too.

23.) Gorilla Monsoon – Barbacoa
24.) Who Do You Love? – The Red Newts
25.) My Life In The West – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
26.) It’ll Be OK – Let’s Whisper

I love that song from Whisper. David and the band are continuing their series of shows in Vermont libraries. They will be in Fairfax tomorrow and I may have to catch that one. I chose West for obvious reasons. After the show at the Ramble I walked the 10 or 20 feet over to The Old North Ender and caught some songs by the Newts. They played a fun version of that one and some cool original tunes that I will have to track down soon. Barbacoa are just amazing. OK, let’s take a deep dive into Heavy Flow, the new album from Julia Caesar

27.) Falter – Julia Caesar
28.) Nose Dive – Julia Caesar
29.) Ode To the River – Julia Caesar
30.) Hear Me Now – Julia Caesar

Such a great album from such a great band. It’s going to be fun to see where they go with it. OK, let’s play another new song from Jeremy.

Francesca played a brilliant version of that on Monday when she joined Maryse’s weekly residency at Light Club Lamp Shop. Maryse played a great version of that song that night. Song before: A Dark Light – Aram Bedrosian

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s winter time and the cold and snow are here. We just cruised past New Year’s Day and are diving into 2018. Let’s fill it with art and compassion and music. Let’s begin with an artist who just released a new song for the new year.

1.) Maria – Francesca Blanchard
2.) Mama – Ivamae
3.) Stormy Day – Robin Gottfried
4.) Cascade – Andriana Chobot

Andriana played a lovely show last Friday at Radio Bean and closed with that one. Robin Gottfried played a recent Thursday and I missed it but hopefully they will be back for a show I can attend soon. Ivamae played after Andriana last Friday. It was a great night. Great new song from Francesca. OK, here is the next song on Black, Blue, and White.

5.) Lead Me To Your Love – The New Siberians
6.) Raise Your Head – Gang of Thieves
7.) Happy New Year – Ninja Custodian
8.) Safe To Say – SWALE

I spent New Year’s Eve at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and Swale put on a wonderful show. Thieves closed the night by rocking hard. Great songs from Ninja and the Siberians. So, last night was a new episode of The X-Files and this song has been running though my head all week.

9.) The Invixibles – Black Rabbit
10.) You Will Fall – Kelly Ravin
11.) Boys Club – Peg Tassey MUSIC
12.) Dragged Around The Universe – Queen Tangerine

QT were Alice and Julia Austin‘s band after Zola Turn. They worked with Jeff Moxley who is now working with Peg to produce the upcoming album from Miriam Bernardo. I wanted to play the Peg song to remind us all that abuse of and predatory behavior are not just issues that effect large companies but also exist in our community. The local punk community is currently struggling to figure out the best way to deal with this and it’s great that they are trying. You want to encourage people who behave badly to improve but at what point will someone not change and you just have to cut ties. It’s a challenge that will hopefully create new spaces of acceptance and power for women. OK, great songs from Kelly and Rabbit. I saw Rabbit last Saturday with this next band.

13.) The Art Of Vandalay – Sad Turtle
14.) Better Half – Abbie Morin
15.) The Meanest Thing I’ll Ever Write – Milton Busker
16.) Pauses – Lowell Thompson and Crown Pilot

That’s Lowell with Bill Mullins, Kirk Flanagan, and Steve Hadeka and it’s such a cool song. Great song from Milton. He played a great version of it last week at Light Club Lamp Shop with his band The Grim Work. Great song from Abbie who is now in the band Hammydown. Turtle are so cool. OK, I’ve been watching X-Files and just got the new Twin Peaks so let’s play this song.

17.) Doppelganger – Lendway
18.) Judgment Day – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
19.) Fool That I Am – Eastern Mountain Time
20.) Think I’ll Stay – Great Western

Western used to play rocking shows around town. Fun song from Eastern. Great new song from David and the band. Cool song form Lendway. This next band are at The Monkey House on Saturday.

21.) Let The Cold In – Mr. Doubtfire
22.) Heavy Winter Heavy Snow – My First Days On Junk
23.) Mush – Phantom Suns

Nice rocker from Casey. Cool song from Ryan Cohen and his band. Great songs from Junk and Doubtfire. This was one of my first favorite prog bands who would come to town now and then.

25.) Hey Ernie – Cold Sweat
26.) Errol McSquisitor – Elephants of Scotland
27.) The Road – Anders Parker
28.) Mr Reed – Seth Yacovone Band

Great rocker from Seth. Anders and Cloud Badge are on the road this weekend. Classics from Elephants and Sweat. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week shall we?

Song before: Cover Me – Bruce Springsteen

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I hope everyone had a nice Halloween and tomorrow is my mother’s birthday so Happy Birthday Mom! Let’s begin with a local musician who just released an album called Other Side Of The Rain.

1.) Magic In This Mystery – Robin Gottfried
2.) Movin’ Out At The End Of The Night – Ben Slotnick
3.) Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot
4.) Scattered Birds – Aaron Flinn

I just love that song by Aaron. He is talented and wonderful and writes such lovely songs. The Andriana song is inspired by the shortening days and lengthening nights. I want to thank Ben and Robin for getting in touch and letting me know about their new music so I can play it for you. Great stuff. OK, last night I went to Phoenix Books Essex & Burlington and saw performances by Swale and Mark Daly, but the main event was Ray Padgett and Brent Hallenbeck talking about Ray’s new book about cover songs. It’s called Cover Me and it was fascinating to hear stories of why rock bands choose to cover other bands songs. This next set was inspired by that discussion.

5.) She’s Leaving Home – Silver Bridget
6.) Sitting Still – Ninja Custodian
7.) Dizzy – Peg Tassey MUSIC
8.) The Revenge Of Vera Gemini – The Contrarian
9.) Elanor Rigby – Screaming Broccoli

Broccoli played in the late ’80’s and did a great rocking version of the classic. Casey Merlin Rae also records as The Contrarian and put out a whole EP of Blue Oyster Cult songs in honor of Sandy Pearlman. Ray mentioned Dizzy as one of the great local cover songs so I had to include that one. Ninja began with a few really cool originals but always played lots of covers to fill out long sets at Nectar’s like that REM song. Bridget play all covers but in their own wonderful way. OK, let’s play the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. It’s a cover too.

10.) Into The Void – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
11.) Resurrection – Death World Wide
12.) Above The Frequency – Invisible Homes
13.) Future Shock – Ruckzuck

I recently came up with the idea of putting Frequency and Shock back to back so I hope you enjoyed that. The version of Shock was from the Robot Dog Studio studio session they did when they were in town in October. Great song by Death. Nice surf version of the Sabbath song. Ryan Cohen has been releasing the Live At Robot Dog performances and interviews as a podcast. He just released the one from Clever Girls. Here is a song from that session. They played a rocking version of it last Saturday at The Monkey House.

14.) 45 – Clever Girls
15.) Big Starr – sleeping in
16.) Paying It Forward – Apartment 3
17.) Electric Trim – Lee Ranaldo

Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo played an amazing show at ArtsRiot last night. That is the title song from his new album. Girls, Sleeping, and Apartment played a great show last week at the Monkey House. That was Apartment 3’s last show. Thanks for the music. Speaking about being thankful for the music, Swale opened the show for Ranaldo with this song.

18.) Felon – SWALE
19.) She Moves In Passages – Late Night Sneaky Uncle
20.) Skeleton Star – The Cush
21.) Uncle Skeleton – Lee Ranaldo

Lee played a super fun version of that song last night. It’s just a couple of days after Halloween so I had to play a couple of skeleton songs. I caught Uncle a few weeks back and it’s about time I got some of their music on the air. Anne-Marie has such a wonderful voice. So does Amanda Gustafson! OK, let’s play one more Lee song.

22.) Moroccan Mountains – Lee Ranaldo
23.) The Light – Kat Wright
24.) I’ve Been Down – Bob Wagner
25.) Ricky The Rider – The Mountain Says No

OK, it’s time to start rocking hard and what better way to start than with Ricky. Great cover song from the amazing Bob Wagner. I love that Kat song. The Lee set last night was just stunning. OK, crank up the volume to 11.

26.) Jackbooted Thugs (Have All The Best Drugs) – Anders Parker
27.) Drug Laws – Swale
28.) Mr Reed (live) – Seth Yacovone Band

All of those songs rock so hard! Thanks everyone. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time Thursday August 17th. It can be streamed at our Facebook page here: WBKM or at WBKM.ORG and will go as follows:

Song before: Kill The King – Rainbow

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a beautiful night in town but has been a challenging week for our country. We got to see the forces of fear spread a message of hate. We got to see lovely people stand up to it and we saw a lovely person die and her mother show us what strength and grace are. We have to fight this with love. Let’s begin tonight with a song about love.

1.) Can you Love Me Too? – Bethany Conner Music
2.) Trouble Come No More – Cricket Blue
3.) All We Need – Eastern Mountain Time
4.) Haze – gneiss

Great song by the lovely people in Gneiss. They will be at Red Square next Wednesday. I want to go but have a couple of other things happening that night. Check them out if you are downtown. Eastern are filming a video next Tuesday at The Monkey House at 6:30. I may work through it but love the lyrics in that song. Cricket and Bethany and others are playing at Farnham Ale & Lager VT on Saturday and it sounds like a great day of music. There is a lot of beauty in both of those songs, and we need beauty now more than ever. When confronted with so many emotions and images it can get overwhelming and sometimes a filter is needed.

5.) Great Filter – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
6.) Mad Captain – Brother Zag (Mike Luoma)
7.) Are We Mad? – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
8.) This Machine – Invisible Homes

As we have seen this weekend, and may see again this coming weekend, we will need to stand up to hate and fascism. Let’s use machines like guitars to fight the hate. We will have to do this alone since the man in the Oval Office has no intention of standing against hate. David and the band ask us an important question about our ability to elect such a man. Brother Zag wrote that song a long time ago and asking if our President is insane is more relevant than ever. Great song by Jeremy. OK, let’s ease off politics for a bit. It’s important to speak out but it’s important to keep making the world a lovely place. Last week I played the last song from 1881’s Light’s Camera Action “album” so it’s time to start a new one. This is a short one but all the songs are great. It’s called Loose Tooth by a band called Clever Girls and here is the first song.

9.) Tell Me No – Clever Girls
10.) Days Like These – Dysfunkshun
11.) Rock And Roll Is My Weapon – Ninja Custodian
12.) Sequoia 3 – Binger

I love the lyric in that song. We all started from the same root. We have grown in our own beautiful ways but we are all connected at the base. It’s important to remember that. If you want to stand up to hate and use rock and roll as your weapon, you have my blessing. That’s what I’m going to do. Dysfunkshun played back in the ’90’s and were always politically aware and Richard Bailey recently said if you are not political you are not punk. They will get the band back together in a few weeks at Higher Ground and I want to thank HG for sponsoring us here at WBKM. Great song from the Girls. I got to see them 3 times last week. OK, when you hear hate speech, please reject it.

13.) Rejected – Black Rabbit
14.) Full Moon Dark Places – Bull & Prairie
15.) Willow II – Tyler Daniel Bean
16.) Children Of The Grave – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)

Great song from the Breaks who will play at Foam Brewers tomorrow night. Tyler is on the road playing shows and will come by the Monkey House soon. He has a video about that song that delves into depression and we as a community don’t do mental health all that well. I want to thank him for helping us understand. I don’t know much about Bull except that they are from central Vermont and really rock. Thanks Ryan Cohen for turning me on to them. Rabbit are so great. These next two bands will be at Nectar’s on Monday with another band for a fun punk show.

17.) Two Weeks (’til The End Of The World) – Grand
18.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
19.) Insanity/Healing Dreams – Peg Tassey MUSIC
20.) Complex Vermont – Self Portrait

Vermont is liberal and conservative. We get really hot and we get really cold. We have people who believe in the alt right and we have people that love people. We are complex. In the midst of the insanity we will need Peg Tassey‘s healing dreams. The Doubtfire song begins with a quote from Trump saying ‘there’s no problem” but there is and he seems to be the only one who doesn’t notice it. Grand are one of the most fun rock bands ever. OK, this next band will be at Nectar’s tomorrow.

21.) Laughing Jim – The Edd
22.) Prog Noir – Stick Men (Official)
23.) Rainy Alley – Totally Submerged
24.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow

Such a lovely song by the lovely Rutland band. Submerged play everywhere and I really like that song. Stick are a Crimsonesque band who will be at Higher Ground next Wednesday. I love the prog rock of the Edd. OK, let’s keep rocking.

25.) Before The Evening’s Thru – THE VACANT LOTS
26.) Black, Blue & White – The New Siberians
27.) The Road – Anders Parker
28.) Every Last One Of Us – SWALE

If you feel alone and scared there are people like Swale and myself who care and want to help. This world can be beautiful and needs every last one of us in our highest and most loving capacity. Anders was at ArtsRiot on Saturday and I was sick and missed it but am sure it was a great show. Great songs form Siberians and the Lots. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music, and the love, of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

29.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

Hey guys, Tim here for one more song. It will be a Fish song as always, and tonight’s has a very civic minded intro. Before I get to that I want to go back a few years and play a song that demands to be played after the events of this week.
