I had a great time seeing music a week ago Saturday at The Monkey House. It had been a while since I had seen Ryan Power. As he often does, he plugged in his phone and played some songs and sang over them. The songs all had a lush texture and went in interesting places. His voice is very smooth and lovely to listen to. I was happily enchanted as he sang seven songs. Most of the songs had a pop sound though one had a country tinged electro vibe. That man just oozes talent and it was great to just stand and listen.

Invisible Homes were on next and played the usual brilliant show. They opened with the Crimsonesque All Your Basis the flooded our ears and hearts with Above The Frequency. Song For My Double had a nice rock groove then they played the cool new one that has the What’s In California? sounding riff. It had some nice freak out Sean Witters guitar work. I’m not sure what the next one was, I’m guessing it’s a new one, then the friendly strains of Pale Rage passed around the room. They followed with the new song about our Robot overlords and closed the night with a ripping This Machine. I was elated for every moment.

Violet Ultraviolet took the stage and played a bunch of the songs from their new album Pop City which was being released that night. VU have a cool sound with oddly paced songs that are quite enjoyable to experience. They played a 14 song set with two played by Jake solo. They sounded great and played well and I really need to listen to their songs to get a handle on them.

I’m so glad I went.

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to begin by thanking Higher Ground for sponsoring us here at WBKM. There are a ton of bands playing around tonight and over the weekend. Let’s begin with a singer who is playing a show at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center in Stowe on Saturday.

1.) Le Blues – Francesca Blanchard
2.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
3.) Mon Ange – Francesca Blanchard

Francesca will also play on Tuesday at Signal Kitchen so there are lots of ways to experience her music this week. This next singer will return to Radio Bean on Sunday.

4.) Vulture – Rorie Kelly
5.) Clocks On The Wall – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
6.) Sunbeam – Split Tongue Crow
7.) The Worst Part – Bethany Conner Music

Bethany played a tremendous show at Light Club Lamp Shop on Tuesday and I’m so glad I was there. Cool song from the Rutland band. I love that Jeremy Gilchrist song. He will be at Radio Bean on Sunday too. OK, let’s play the next song from Song For My Double.

8.) This Machine – Invisible Homes
9.) Phones – Violet Ultraviolet
10.) Arkansas Sheriff – Lake Superior
11.) Circle K – The New Siberians

Another great new song from the Siberians Black, Blue and White album. Cool rocker from LS. Cool new song from VU’s new Pop City album. I love that Woody Guthrie reference. This next singer is at Light Club Lamp Shop tonight.

12.) Dogs At The Door – Milton Busker
13.) Gettin High – Heavy Plains
14.) MSP2 – ROUGH FRANCIS
15.) Politicians In My Eyes – Death World Wide

Death played a show that was live on Facebook earlier today. They just played DC with Francis. This song makes me think of the debate on Monday where there was a Presidential candidate and some guy who kept saying look at me. Please choose wisely when voting. Francis played at Higher Ground tonight. Plains were at The Monkey House tonight. I should have been at all of those shows, and doing this radio show. That Milton song seemed a little appropriate tonight. This next band are at Foam Brewers tomorrow.

17.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks
18.) Round Sum – Cave Bees
19.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons
20.) Popular Crowd – SWALE

That was a fun rocking set with a little life commentary from Bill. This next set has a theme. Any guesses?

21.) Shooting Starlight – Rue M.
22.) Dora Marr – Queen Tangerine
23.) Star – The New Siberians
24.) Under Bright Stars – Alice Austin

Great songs from Alice and a cool song from the Siberians first album. Rue will be playing the election night party in November. This next singer just posted a cool old video from 1991. We rocked a lot back then too.

25.) Naked Garden – Peg Tassey MUSIC
26.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
27.) Way Down Hadestown – Anais Mitchell
28.) Basalt Anchor – Vedora

Great song from Caroline Marie. Anais is at Higher Ground tomorrow. Classic rock from the first two. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? See ya, ta ta….

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring our station and for filling the waterfront with music last weekend. I had to work and pack on Saturday and on Sunday I took a bus to Atlantic City with my mother and brother. We had a great time walking the boardwalk and seeing the ocean. It made me think of this song.

1.) Shoreline In Jersey – Joe Adler
2.) Cloudy Mind – Joe Adler
3.) Can We Go There? – Bethany Conner Music
4.) Can You Love Me Too? – Bethany Conner

Bethany will be at Light Club Lamp Shop on Tuesday and has some cool songs. Joe has a great voice,, is a great guy, and writes great songs. Tonight’s theme was suggested by the next song on the Invisible Homes album. Here is the title song.

5.) Song For My Double – Invisible Homes
6.) Company She Keeps – Invisible Homes
7.) Shot In The Dark – Violet Ultraviolet
8.) Pop City – Violet Ultraviolet

VU will release their new album, Pop City, at The Monkey House on Saturday. Homes and Ryan Power will be playing too. Here is another great song from a local favorite.

10.) Redemption On Pearl – Milton Busker
11.) Small Town Blues – Kelly Ravin
12.) Far Away And Gone – Kelly Ravin

Kelly has a new album coming out and he is releasing it Saturday at ArtsRiot. This next singer is returning to town to open the show.

13.) Good Thing – Maryse Smith
14.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith
15.) Burn Burn Burn – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
16.) Burn It Down, Bernadette – Phil Yates and the Affiliates

Phil played at Sidebar this evening but I was too slow to make it. I’m sure I’ll catch him again soon. I love the new album called Black, Blue and White that this next band just released.

17.) Black 17 – The New Siberians
18.) Make It Work – The New Siberians
19.) Too Good – Black Rabbit
20.) The Invisibles – Black Rabbit

Lake Superior have a new album coming out Saturday and are releasing it at Positive Pie tomorrow in Montpelier. I could not track down any of their music, but Rabbit are opening the show, and I have lots of theirs. How much do you want to bet I can keep pulling out great new Siberians songs? Wow, I guess I walked through too many casinos in Atlantic City. OK, let’s keep rocking with a band who played GPN this weekend.

21.) Vestibule – Blue Button
22.) We’re Closed – Blue Button
23.) Kentucky Gunman Tells Coworker – Ninja Custodian
24.) That’s When I Reach For My Revolver – Ninja Custodian

Ninja rocked Burlington ridiculously hard for a few years. BB are rocking it hard now. So are this next band.

25.) Blind Pigs – ROUGH FRANCIS
26.) Comm To Space – Rough Francis
27.) Slut – Dirty Blondes
28.) Ornan – Dirty Blondes

No doubt about the title of that song or the name of the band. The Blondes always rock hard. So do Francis. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a hot and beautiful night in the city and there is music all around. I saw The Wee Folkestra at Summervale in the Intervale in the old north end of town and on Church Street they had an area blocked off where people were dancing to recorded music. Let’s begin tonight with one of my favorite local singer songwriters.

1.) Clocks On The Wall – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
2.) Can You Love Me Too? Bethany Conner Music
3.) New Love – Andriana Chobot
4.) In Waves – Sarah Blacker

Sarah comes to town on a pretty regular basis and always puts on a great show. I’m just loving the Andriana album! I was lucky enough to hang out with James Lockridge and the Big Heavy World crew last night as they broadcast their radio show outside on King st. I was fortunate enough to hear Bethany play a few songs, and I wanted to get her music on the air immediately. I just love that song from Jeremy. On Tuesday when I woke up and checked in with Facebook there were a lot of posts about the RNC. I expected the same yesterday but instead saw several post of people speaking of a local artist who just took their own life. All of the posts said talk to me if you feel that way. Please add me to that list. I’ve been through a lot and know the value of each and every one of you. We all need you more than you may know. If you feel that far down, please reach out. There are lots of great people who will do anything they can to help. In that spirit, let’s move on to the next song on Lendway’s Giant Places.

5.) You’re Safe With Us – Lendway
6.) Phones – Violet Ultraviolet
7.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
8.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass

Great song from Gregory. He used to play in town all the time and has moved on, but still stops in now and then. Great song from Milton’s new album. That is a song from UV’s new album Pop City and wow. Hmmm, Lendway. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring us at the radio station and for providing the Girls Rock VT July Showcase on Saturday at 12:30pm. GRV is a great organization and it is a great way to help girls learn about the music business. One of their main proponents is this next artist.

9.) One From Two – Linda Bassick
10.) This Is Our Good Night – Aya Inoue
11.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
12.) All I Want Is A Hoverboard.- Wave of the Future

Samara Lark Brown sings with Wave and is a great supporter of Girls Rock Vermont and would be willing to help if you feel really down. She and Joe and Aya and several others played with Wee Folkestra tonight and it was great to hear them. I love the musical saw on Brothers courtesy of the magical Johnnie Day Durand and she played with Wee Folk too. OK, let’s rock. Next week one of the great local bands from the ’90’s will reunite for a show at The Monkey House. Here is a set of their music.

13.) Bloodboy – Envy
14.) Still Life Scene – Envy
15.) Bionic – The Red Telephone
16.) Talking With Tony – Envy
17.) Bomb – Envy.

I’m so psyched for the ENVY Reunion Show! next week! Speaking of the Monkey House, I saw these three bands last Saturday.

18.) Steve Buscemi Fan Club – YURT
19.) Sleepwalker – 1881
20.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates

Phil Yates & The Affiliates played an awesome show and even added the extra two sixes to that song. I guess we now know where 1881 got their name. Wow, that’s a lot of sheep to count before sleeping. Yurt are from Bozeman Montana and stopped in to play a delightful show. Thanks guys! Last night I saw the third of the four Wednesday night residencies that Villanelles played at Nectar’s. They keep playing this song and I keep loving it.

21.) Shy Spiders – Villanelles
22.) Sugar Coated Candy Stix – Dino Bravo VT
23.) Iron And Metal – The Mountain Says No
24.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit

Rabbit are playing Saturday for the Fight Fire with Fire • A fundraiser for Henry St. Deli ft. Tar Iguana, Doctor Rick and Black Rabbit • Nectar’s to help out with all of the damage done by the fire.
Mountain opened the show last night but did not play that song. They played 9 new songs that have not been recorded and released yet. I think they recorded a bulk of the new album with Ryan Cohen recently but have a way to go to finish it. Dino really need to get some good recordings of their songs. They have lots of really good ones, like Candy Stix. Hmmm, Villanelles. OK, we’ve got time for a couple more.

25.) Help Wanted – Wide Wail
26.) The Naked Garden – Peg Tassey MUSIC
27.) Womb With A View – Heavy Plains

It was good to catch up with Luke Awtry last night. Apparently Plains lost their rhythm section but just picked up another. Hopefully they will play shows soon. That is such a powerful song from Peg and a classic from WW. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? See Ya.

28.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit
