intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I hope everyone is enjoying the Holiday Season. Christmas has past and it’s almost time for New Years. Let’s begin with a couple of local Christmas songs that came my way just a little too late for last week’s show.

1.) Some Kinds Of Homes (Are Invisible) – Invisible Homes
2.) Misa Criolla- Gloria – The Plastic Billionaires
3.) Happy New Year – Ninja Custodian
4.) Last Love – Myra Flynn Music

Myra will be at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts on New Year’s even. Great song by Ninja even though it’s about that other matter, Cool songs from P-Bills and Homes. OK, here is the next song on Black, Blue, and White.

5.) So They Say – The New Siberians
6.) Chester Allen – The World Famous Hanglows
7.) Lights Of Montreal – Lobot
8.) Every Last One Of Us – SWALE

Swale will be at the Flynn Theater on New Year’s Eve too! Lobot and the Hanglows played some cool shows in our town in the early 2000’s. Great song form the Siberians. OK, so earlier this year I wanted to get some live music on the air. With the help of Ryan Cohen and Robot Dog Studio we created a series of shows and interviews. The first one was broadcast February 16, 2017.

9.) Let Me Be – Peter Burton 2-16-17
10.) Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter 3-9-17
11.) The Space Between – The Nancy Druids 3-30-17
12.) Loose Tooth – Clever Girls 4-20-17
13.) Lovely Day – gneiss 5-25-17

That gets us through May. Let’s continue on as I’m playing one song from each show in the order they were recorded and played on the air.

14.) Strawberry Blonde – Dino Bravo VT 6-8-17
15.) My Old House – Andriana Chobot 7-20-17
16.) What The Fuck Went Wrong – David Rosane & The Zookeepers 8-24-17
17.) Clever Girl – Savage Hen 8-31-17
18.) Juliet – Cave Bees 9-21-17

Everything was going well and we got into a nice groove of talking and having the band play a song and talking and another song until 4 were played. Then The Dead Shakers came in and Kevin Bloom said we’re running all of our songs together as one piece. Of course they would.

19.) Intro->Accidental Graveyard->Taung Child->Superpowers->Medfield – The Dead Shakers 9-28-17

That was fun. Let’s keep going.

20.) Done Saving Bones – Matt the Gnat and the Gators with Miss Saxy – 10-5-17
21.) I Ruined The Moon – Ruckzuck 10-26-17
22.) Low Down Mid-December – Eastern Mountain Time 11-30-17
23.) Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely – Black Rabbit 12-14-17
24.) What’s Inside A Thing? – Zeus Springsteen 12-21-17

So there it is, a year of live music. Thanks to everyone involved! We begin next year with The Mountain Says No in mid January. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking our the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring the station. It’s a bit of a slow week but tomorrow at noon tickets go on sale for The English Beat, if that is of interest. That show is coming up in September. It was so great to hear and see the dynamic songwriting duo of Sean Toohey and Matt Hutton last week at The Monkey House when they were joined by Julia Austin and Ann Mindell when they played as Envy. Let’s begin tonight with a song from Sean and Matt’s last album.

1.) Gold In California – The Red Telephone
2.) Always Monica/Down At The Duck – Chin Ho
3.) Chester Allen – The World Famous Hanglows.

I love the line about what you throw away, to me, is solid gold. That sums up many of the similarities and differences between us all. Nice London Calling reference too. Great couple of songs from Chin. I love that Telephone song. OK, let’s play the next song on the Giant Places album.

4.) The Words Will Show – Lendway
5.) Bloodboy – Barbacoa
6.) Into The Void – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)

The Breaks played as Sabbath last night at Nectar’s. Barbacoa opened for Envy last week and played the instrumental surf version of Bloodboy. Envy played it properly when they opened their set. Nice instrumental from Lendway. OK, let’s play some rock and roll with some words.

7.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
8.) The Blackout – The Static Age
9.) Running Away From Home – The Snaz
10.) Blue Light Shines – Gabrielle Douglas and The Dwellers

I’ve always thought that was one of the great songs played in Burlington. The Snaz are coming to town for a show at Radio Bean tomorrow and one at The Monkey House on Saturday. I love that song by Static. When I saw them so many years ago it was the first time I saw Bobby Hackney Jr. play drums. He just played with Barbacoa last week at the Envy show and was totally amazing. Great song by Zola. Many years ago The Cush came to Burlington and enchanted us for a few years. They are just about to begin a European tour so let’s celebrate with some of their wonderful music.

11.) Hollow – The Cush
12.) Roll Me – The Cush
13.) Telepathic Headdress – The Cush
14.) Heavy Psych – The Cush

I hope they have a great tour!! One of the cool things about the Envy show last week was catching up with old friends like this guy.

15.) Decide – David Jarvis
16.) Comin’ Home – The Hippnotix
17.) Two Weeks (’til The End Of The World) – Grand
18.) Shy Spiders – Villanelles

Villanelles were just as great a week ago Wednesday as they were the previous three. That night Grand opened for them and were pretty amazing too. Hipp Notix are from New York and, if I’m not mistaken, are from Dave’s neck of the woods. So, this is the week that the Seven Days Daisy awards came out. Daniel Bolles also awarded some special not quite awards called Dandelions. He rightly awarded Villanelles for best rock band and somehow me for local music champion, though fellow nominees such as Luke Awtry, James Lockridge, and Girls Rock Vermont deserved it as much or more. Thanks Dan and 7 Days. Oh, and this next singer and band rightly swept the local popular Daisy votes in a few categories.

19.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
20.) Bad Oasis – farm
21.) Star – The New Siberians

That is such a great song. I love that Farm song. OK, this next singer is 17 years old but is on her way to become a star.

22.) The Worst Part – Bethany Conner Music
23.) Bury Me – Forest Gray
24.) Our Lady Of The Underground – Anais Mitchell
25.) Time to Get Out – Aaron Flinn and Salad Days

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Despite a super warm December, winter has pretty much set in. Let’s begin with some local songs about the cold time of year.

1.) Winter – Dave Jarvis
2.) Christmas Sled – The Mountain Says No
3.) Stylus Of Id – Somah
4.) Northern Memory – The Cush

Such great cold imagery from the Texas band who spent many winters playing lovely music for us. Thanks Cush!! Stylus is all about Orion who appears in the sky in winter. That sled that you got for Christmas, but couldn’t use at the time, well now there is lots of snow and cold, so have at it. Nice song from Dave. It’s a bit of a mellow evening in Burlington, so let’s go with that vibe for a bit.

5.) Good Thing – Maryse Smith
6.) The Night Syd Barrett Died – Colin Nicholas Clary
7.) Eve & Adam – Cricket Blue
8.) Afterlife – Hana Zara

Great song from Hana about living in the space between two lives. Great song from Cricket who are playing shows all over. I love all the local references in Syd. Super strong song from Maryse Smith. Let’s keep the mellow but strong vibe going for a bit.

9.) Letter From The 21st – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
10.) New York My Lovely – Joshua Glass Music
11.) I’ve Been Down – Bob Wagner
12.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band

Such a great song from Kat Wright and the band. Hopefully they will have new music soon. Nice cover done by a killer guitar player and a driving force behind Dark Side of the Mountain, who are playing in Stowe soon. If you like the Josh song check out his band Sammich. Great song from Jeremy Gilchrist. Tomorrow night at Radio Bean Barbacoa will be the backing band for a bunch of local artists playing David Bowie songs. I don’t know if anyone in this next band will be part of it, but they did release this song this week.

13.) Starman – Madaila
14.) Freak Out Friday – Rue Mevlana
15.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
16.) Melt – Chin Ho

Nice cover song from Ho. I thought it would be fun to bookend that set with the covers and stick a couple of new and old classics in between. This next set is for the optimists of the world.

17.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont musicians
18.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
19.) Sequoia 3 – Binger
20.) In The Garden Of Mystic Lovers – Francis Dunnery

Francis is from Scotland but he lived in Vermont for a while around the time he released the album Man. He played Mystic and other song from the album often at Club Metronome. I just love the sentiment from Binger, and the rock. Great words from Bill and Bernie. OK, let’s take a swing through some ’90’s classics.

21.) On My Way – Hover
22.) Finder – Madelines
23.) Bloodboy – Envy
24.) Help Wanted – Wide Wail

Absolute classic from Wail. Great rocker from Envy. Finder is such a fun song with a great riff. I just love the Hover song. This next song is one that has always spoken to me. This is one of the coolest bands to ever play JP’s.

25.) Chester Allen – The World Famous Hanglows.

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week. I’ll say goodbye with the next song on Red Flannel Hash.

26.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I played some new songs, I played some old songs, and I talked about of couple of “literary” characters in local music songs.

Song before: Fractured Mirror – Ace Frehley

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It’s a cold night in Burlington but people are out and about, walking around, not letting it stop them. I was trying to make it to three shows this week and feel bad I only made it to one. Great Western played a great show lat Friday at Radio Bean, and did a killer version of this one. This is Into the light by Great Western on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Into The Light – Great Western
2.) The Storm Within – Death World Wide
3.) Holy Family – Heavy Plains
4.) Burn It Down Bernadette – Phil Yates & The Affiliates

I made it to Western last Friday and after a long work day Saturday was dragging when it got close to the Phil show at The Monkey House. As it turned out the party ended up coming to me that night. I was going to go see Phil Yates solo at Radio Bean on Sunday but the afternoon nap was 4 hours and I woke up right as he was going on. I should have set the alarm. Rats. Great song from the upcoming Phil album. I just got the Plains album today and that one jumped at me. Sweet song from Death from the Burlington days. OK, on to the next song on Many Things & Many Scenes. This is a beautiful song that I’m sending out to my brother. It features Johnnie Day Durand on the saw.

5.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
6.) New Atlantis – Aaron Flinn
7.) The Next Instead – Swale

I thought Swale were going to play Radio Bean tomorrow night but the schedule changed and now it’s Barbacoa and Binger. Hmm. I think Aaron is playing at Juniper tomorrow. I may have to check that out. Joe is playing Saturday night at the Bean, so that will be fun. This next band is from Canada but have played Burlington and Vermont so many times, they are practically locals. They are playing the Flynn Theater on Tuesday. I’ve seen them many times but may miss this one. I had no money when tickets went on sale, and as soon as I could afford it, they were sold out. Oh well, maybe next time. On this tour they are playing a few songs, then all of Fully Completely.

8.) Fully Completely – The Tragically Hip
9.) New Orleans Is Sinking (live w/Nautical Disaster in the middle) – The Tragically Hip

That’s going to be a rocking night at the Flynn. The Flynn will also rock in February when Death and Rough Francis play. I’ve got tickets for that, for me and my brother Ken. Here’s another song from Spiritual Mental Physical.

10.) Can You Give Me A Thrill??? – Death
11.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS
13.) Something I Drew – farm

Farm put on some great shows and I always loved that one. I though it would sound great coming out of Comm and was so right. OK, let’s slow things down a little. This next artist has an album coming in February. Until then I will have to just play this one.

14.) Dropout Generation – Hana Zara
15.) Better Half – Abbie Morin
16.) Our Work Is Never Done – PossumHaw

I love that song and really love the sentiment of it! I may not make it, but I’ll always try. I don’t know a lot about Abbie but she has a Wednesday night residence at Nectar’s this January. I’m sure Ill catch her the night Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger play. Love Hana, can’t wait for the new songs!. This next artist just started a Kickstarter to fund his new album. The last one was great, and here is a song from it.

17.) 1965 – The New Siberians
18.) Old North Ender – James Kochalka Superstar
19.) We’re Closed – Blue Button
20.) Hammerhead – Barbacoa

Barbacoa always rock. I’ll see how the energy goes tomorrow. I’d love to catch them at the Bean. I was going to play a song by Redadmirial but it was in a format the players did not recognize, so maybe next week. It was recorded live at a pub called The Old Northender so I had to play the James song. Love the BB song too. OK, time for two more songs. These are two “literary” characters of song from Burlington.

21.) Chester Allen – The World Famous Hanglows
22.) Errol McSquisitor (live) – Elephants of Scotland

Wow, that was just tremendous live. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only WBKM.ORG. I walked in and the ’80’s Ladies were wrapping up. I loaded in some music and started the show.

Song Before: Delta Sun Bottleneck Stomp – Mercury Rev

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last Saturday, a band from Portland Maine stopped by to rock The Monkey House. I bought their new EP, EGO, and all five songs are great. Let’s begin with a band called When Particles Collide and a song called Finally Found The One on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Finally Found The One – When Particles Collide
2.) Chester Allen – The World Famous Hanglows
3.) Space Opera – Aram Bedrosian
4.) Our Work Is Never Done – PossumHaw

I was at the studio earlier today and received a package with the new album from PossumHaw. Our Work had a nice bass to start, and great lyrics, and I thought it would sound good coming out of Aram’s bass song. I ran into him lat week at the Monkey and he is doing a lot of teaching and working on a new album. I love that song by the Hanglows who played around town for a couple of years. I love all of the WPC disc!! Last week I played the last song from Alice Austin‘s To A Star In The Yard. Tonight I need to start a new album to work my way through, week by week. We are going to rock hard for a while, since I have chosen Maximum Soul Power by ROUGH FRANCIS.

5.) Ruffians – Rough Francis
6.) Neutrino – Black Rabbit
7.) I Hear Things Are Just As Bad Down In Lake Champlain – Gorgon
8.) The Tradeoff in Vermont – Lindy Pear

Nice song from Lindy. In winter, Vermont can be a bit of a bear, but in spring, summer and fall in can be amazing. I’m OK with the tradeoff. That burst of noise is new from Gorgon who have risen from the ashes of Doll Fight. Apparently they are going the heavy rocking route! Great song from Rabbit about Papa Neutrino, who inspired a lot of people. Rough Francis Rock! Next up, let’s play with a VT classic.

9.) Golgi Apparatus – The Pants
10.) Be A Good Citizen (NYC mix) – Pinhead
11.) Late ’80’s Ladies – Helicopter Consortium

It will be fun to see WBKM’s ’80’s Ladies every week. The Helicopter song is about people at music shows for the scene, and that’s fine, as long as you don’t annoy the people who are there for the music. Our ’80’s Ladies care about our listeners! The Pants do a great cover of the Phish song, even if they are not so sure. Citizen is a classic and encourages you to brush your teeth every day.

12.) Teeth Or Pedal – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
13.) Perfect Teeth – When Particles Collide
14.) Teeth – Wolvings

Wolvings played a great version of that a couple of weeks ago at the Monkey House birthday party. Phil and WPC played great versions of those songs last Saturday at the Monkey. Speaking of going out. I’m heading to see Wave of the Future at Manhattan Pizza. They don’t have anything recorded, but I ripped the MP3 from their Youtube video. I’ll be rocking to this soon!

15.) One Point Twenty-One Giga Jiga Watts – Wave Of The Futrue

Song after: A Feast Of Consequences – Fish
