Song before: Stars Die – Porcupine Tree

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’m struck by the passing of people and the passing of stars that have happened recently. Let’s begin tonight with a cosmic connection that we all share.

1.) New Moon – Clare Byrne: Song and Dance
2.) Solitude – Alpenglow
3.) Resist – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
4.) Free – Francesca Blanchard

That’s a cool new song from Francesca and that’s a cool new song from Jeremy. The Alpenglow song has been running though my head lately so I thought I’d share. Great song by Clare. When I saw the first post about #MeToo I had that sinking feeling that almost every woman that I know was going to post one. I think it’s terrible that women have to endure this but I think it’s great that this is all coming to light. We should deal with this openly and move on to the path of just treating every other human being with respect and care. Come on people, I know you can step up. Here is a song about a woman being stalked and attacked and how it feels. I hope it helps us all move away from this behavior.

5.) Elevator – SWALE
6.) Mom Vibes – Thick Business
7.) A Cut In The Night Sky – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
8.) Mother’s OK – Split Tongue Crow

Great song from the Rutland Band. Cool song from Matt that we recorded a couple of weeks ago at Robot Dog Studio. Thick Business are from Boise Idaho and played last night at The Monkey House and they were amazing. Swale opened the show and it was just a great night. OK, this song has been running through my head a lot lately too.

9.) Able To Breathe – Peter Burton
10.) In The Country – Bardela
11.) Creatures – Hayley Jane and the Primates
12.) On My Way – Hover

That’s a classic from Burlington’s 1990’s. Cool new song from the Primates who are an amazing band live. Lovely songs from Bardela and Peter. OK, let’s play the next song on the Surf Sabbath album that I am playing all the way through, song after song, week after week.

13.) Sabbath Bloody Sabbath – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
14.) Inevitability Of Death – The Tragically Hip
15.) Mary’s Line Into This View – Ouzkxqlzn
16..) Oh You, You’re You – Ruckzuck

Last time Ruckzuck were in town I saw them 3 times in two days. They will be at The Monkey House on Sunday around 7 then at Radio Bean at midnight. I’ll see about working out that third show…Great song from Lauren Costello‘s band. Just for the record, I checked and the name of the band is not technically pronounceable. The music is nice and that’s all that matters. A lot of us are feeling the loss of Gordon Downie from The Tragically Hip. He was such a force of life it’s hard to imagine that he is gone. They rocked Burlington, and all of Vermont, for many years. Great song from the Surfers. OK, this band played a great show last Saturday at The Monkey House.

17.) Juliet – Cave Bees
18.) Again The Rain – Pinact
19.) Flypaper – Persian Claws
20.) Double Line – Black Rabbit

It was so cool to see Rabbit play Flypaper recently at the Monkey House. I thought I’d put a Rabbit song after the Claws song to give you a hint of what it sounded like. Pinact are from Scotland and played with the Cave Bees at the Monkey House show lat Saturday. Both bands rocked hard. OK, let’s keep rocking.

21.) Black Blue And White – The New Siberians
22.) King Grifter – The Mountain Says No
23.) At The Hundredth Meridian – The Tragically Hip
24.) Springtime In Vienna – The Tragically Hip

I saw the Hip on a boat cruise and then open for Eric Johnson at Memorial Auditorium. I saw them headline Memorial many times. I’ve seen them in Montreal and Verdun and on at least three mountains in Vermont. I’ve seen them at Higher Ground, both the old one and the new one and thanks for sponsoring us HG. I saw them recently at Shelburne Farms and the Flynn. Every Show was great. Thanks guys!!

25.) New Orleans Is Sinking (live) – The Tragically Hip

Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, which will be the annual Halloween show.

Song Before: I Don’t Like Mondays – The Boomtown Rats

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s been a tough week to be a music fan what with the shootings in Las Vegas by a man who’s mind just broke, then the untimely death of Tom Petty. The only think I can think of to do is to celebrate the people who are out there making art and music and spreading love and joy every day. Let’s begin tonight with a new band that I don’t know a lot about but are engaging the world with their music.

1.) The Mountain Carol – The Mountain Carol
2.) The Crow – Bardela
3.) Homesick – Jakals
4.) Safe To Say – SWALE

It gives me no end of comfort to know that Swale are out there making and playing great songs like that. Jakals are from Boston and came to visit The Monkey House last Saturday and put on a wonderful show. That song really stood out. I caught Bardela at the Monkey House on Tuesday and loved how Arty LaVigne and Cooie DeFrancesco‘s voices blended. The other two guys in the band were pretty good too. Cool song from Carol. OK, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for another edition of WBKM live at Robot Dog.

5.) Done Saving Bones – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
6.) A Cut In The Night Sky – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
7.) Frozen Winning Streaks Of A Gambler – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
8.) Paper Doll – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
9.) A Monster’s Holiday – Matt the Gnat and the Gators

I want to thank Ryan Cohen for making us sound great and thank Matthew Bryan Hagen and Caroline Marie for such an amazing performance! Also, thanks to Burlington Beer Company for the tasty libations. Matt just had a birthday so Happy Birthday Matt again. OK, lets move on to the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song week after week. It is an album that features Matt on guitar.

10.) Children Of The Grave – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
11.) Hurricane Jane – Hayley Jane and the Primates
12.) Lovely Day – gneiss
13.) Come Kiss Me – Near North

North are about to release a beautiful new album called Most Every Night at the Monkey House on Saturday. Gneiss are at Red Square tomorrow evening. The Primates just released their new album We’re Here Now. I love it when they do Hurricane live and am happy to have a copy of the song that I can play. The Breaks are so great, whether they are in their usual mode or the Sabbath mode. OK, these next two bands will play with North on Saturday.

14.) The Invisibles – Black Rabbit
15.) Machu Picchu – The Mountain Says No
16.) The Mime – Joe Adler
17.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons

Sometimes it’s easy to feel lost and like there is no home and that song touches on that. Just remember, we all feel that way and can help each other make a home in our vibrant community. Joe is a true treasure and brings us lots of music. That’s such a great song. Cool songs from Mountain and Rabbit and I can’t wait for Saturday. So, a few weeks ago The Tsunamibots made me the director of robot propaganda and I thought I better try and live up to the title.

18.) Robotic Meltdown – The Tsunamibots
19.) Robots Making Love – Pinhead
20.) I Think I’m turning Into A Robot – Wave of the Future
21.) Rise Of The Robots (Reprise) – The Tsunamibots

I hope you enjoyed that fun set by such creative musicians. This next song was recorded at Robot Dog Studio and features Matt Hagen on bass.

22.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
23.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS
24.) The Space Between – The Nancy Druids
25.) The Great Forgetter – The New Siberians

Such a fun song from the Siberians. Druids played a great version of that one last week at the Monkey House. Francis are a treasure and that song always rocks. Great rocker from Hen. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Train In Vain – The Clash

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. What a crazy week, it’s been like summer and in the ’90’s and suddenly today it’s a chilly fall day. You’ve got to love Vermont. Let’s begin tonight with a band who are about to release a new album called Most Every Night.

1.) Get Loud – Near North
2.) Jesse – The Parts
3.) Favorite Bag – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
4.) Wicked World – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)

It’s so cool that the Breaks did the whole album of Sabbath songs in a surf style. I’m playing it all the way through song after song week after week. Cool song from Phil’s upcoming album. Great song from The Parts. Thanks Near North for sending me a copy of your new album on blue vinyl. It sounds great. OK, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for another edition of WBKM Live At Robot Dog.

1.) Intro->Accidental Graveyard-> The Dead Shakers
2.) Taung Child -> – The Dead Shakers
3.) Superpowers -> – The Dead Shakers
4.) Medfield – The Dead Shakers

Thanks to Ryan Cohen from Robot Dog for making us all sound so great and thanks Burlington Beer Company for the libations. I especially want to thank The Dead Shakers for taking us on a rocking journey. OK, this next band have been playing around for ages and Mr. Charlie Frazier is a local legend. He has kept Vermont’s desire for the music of The Grateful Dead going for years.

5.) Intros -> – Blues for Breakfast, the band
6.) Scarlet Begonias -> – Blues For Breakfast
7.) Music Never Stopped – Blues For Breakfast

Vermont loves the music of the Dead and Mr. Charlie’s dedication to the blues. So, this weekend it was so hot I’m sure lots of people headed to the beach.

8.) Beach Song – Mr. Ray Fork
9.) Kindergarten – Lendway
10.) Sky – The Nancy Druids
11.) Somewhere Far – The Red Telephone

Great song from Sean Toohey and Matt Hutton. Druids are Sean’s new band and they are playing Saturday at The Monkey House so go check them out. I miss Lendway. All last week was beach weather. It’s getting late in the year and darkness is coming earlier.

12.) Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot
13.) Hope In The Dark – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
14.) Cheese Whiz Salad – Wren Kitz
15.) Queen City – Cave Bees

I’m psyched that the Bees have that recorded so I can play it for you. Burlington is The Queen City and I rock it as many nights as I can. I caught Wren Kitz and his band at Club Metronome last week and they were stunning. Lauren Costello plays in Wren’s band and in The Dead Shakers. Great songs from Andriana and David. Josh Shedaker plays in The Dead Shakers and in this next band. He just lost his grandmother so we want to send him lots of love.

16.) Strawberry Blonde – Dino Bravo VT
17.) Mr Reed – Seth Yacovone Band
18.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
19.) Mary – Plan B

That’s a classic from the ’80’s. I love the truth in Joe’s song that we are all brothers and sisters and that we should take care of each other in times of pain and in times of joy. Great rockers from Seth and Dino. We all have a limited amount of time on this world so please spend it well.

Song before: Cinema – YES (official)

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. A week and a half ago a gentleman came to town and played a show at Radio Bean on a Sunday night. Let’s begin with one of his songs.

1.) What We Started – ROSEDALE
2.) Echoes On – Cones
3.) Release Your Records – SWALE
4.) Falling – Xiu Xiu

Xiu will play tomorrow at Club Metronome and they sound pretty cool so I may have to check that out. I always know which new Swale song to play by checking and seeing which one has been running through my head all week. I hope that one gets stuck in yours, if you want. I had fun seeing Cones at The Monkey House and really liked that song and wanted to play it again this week. Cool song from Rosedale. OK, last week I finished playing Loose Tooth so it’s time to start a new album to play song after song week after week. This is a side project from The High Breaks called Surf Sabbath.

5.) Symptom Of The Universe – Surf Sabbath.
6.) Freeway – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
7.) Alienation – Black Rabbit
8.) Imaginary – Envy

That’s a classic from Burlington’s ’90’s and still a great song. That’s a new classic from Rabbit. Great rocker from David and the band. Recently, The High Breaks took a few Black Sabbath songs and rearranged them into a surf style then put them out on Bandcamp. I hope you enjoy hearing the album over the next few weeks. OK, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for an interview and live music from Cave Bees.

9.) Sister Blue – Cave Bees
10.) Queen City – Cave Bees
11.) I Don’t Need This Anymore – Cave Bees
12.) Juliet – Cave Bees

I want to thank the band for playing so hard and being so fun to talk with. Thanks also to Ryan Cohen for making us all sound so great. So, Rebekah Whitehurst and Frank from Cave Bees also play in this next band.

13.) Vestibule – Blue Button
14.) Finally Found The One – When Particles Collide
15.) Robots Improving Robots – The Tsunamibots
16.) Lift A Finger – Bag Of Panties

Panties featured Steve Tremblay before his Cave Bees days. I want to thank Tsunamibots for making me Director of Robot Propaganda last week, and for rocking so hard. Great song from Particles who play all over the US. Great rocker from Button. This next band play at Metal Monday next week at Nectar’s.

17.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
18.) Probably Wrong – Phantom Suns
19.) Creature (Of The Night) – Hellascope
20.) Purple Sorceress – KiefCatcher

I want to thank Chris Farnsworth for turning me on to Kief and Hella and lots of other bands. I’ll have to watch and see if I can catch them live sometime. There is so much music about that it always helps when people in the know clue each other in. Cool song from Ryan Cohen and company. Great rocker from Savage. OK, let’s keep rocking.

21.) Tenderness – The New Siberians
22.) Iron And Metal – The Mountain Says No

Tonight’s local music radio show will run from 9-11pm US Eastern Time Thursday September 14. It can be streamed from the WBKM Facebook page and will go as follows.

Song before: Fireworks – The Tragically Hip

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. My heart goes out to the people of Florida. Please help out if you can. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring the show. They will bring the giant GPN festival to the waterfront this weekend. Let’s begin tonight with a couple of bands who played at The Monkey House last night.

1.) Taung Child – The Dead Shakers
2.) Echoes On – Cones
3.) Unveiled – Pours
4.) Bidets And Confused – Sad Turtle

Turtle play cool instrumentals with Seinfeld references and are always fun. It was cool to see Chris Shar of Pours at the Landlady show last week but was even cooler to hear him play drums with the Shakers. Cones are from Los Angeles and we are so lucky to live in a town where they can just come and play on a Wednesday night. The Shakers haven’t recorded their full psychedelic sound yet but Child hints at it. More about that in a couple of weeks. OK, it’s time to play the last song on Loose Tooth and I will have to pick a new album to play all the way through, song after song, week after week.

5.) We Tried – Clever Girls
6.) I Like Flowers And I’m Not Afraid To Say It – Peg Tassey MUSIC
7.) Automatic Sweetheart – Hammydown
8.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara

Hana just successfully funded her new album with a Kickstarter campaign and I can’t wait to hear it. It was cool to see Abbie Gail from Hammydown play with Caroline Rose at the Madaila on Main show recently. I got to go to Ottawa and see the mosaiculture and to go to Montreal to see the botanical gardens this week so the Peg song jumped to mind. Great song and EP from Clever Girls. I”m sure they will have something new soon since they have lots of songs in their set that are not recorded yet. Last Saturday I saw a few classic bands at Higher Ground and one who have been playing around but I had just not seen. Here is one of their songs.

9.) Co2U Later – The Tsunamibots
10.) Projector – Vetica
11.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy
12.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons

Cannons played in the early 00’s and rocked us hard. Starlight were a cool ’90’s band. Vetica played some great shows in the 10’s and the Tsunamibots are putting on fantastic shows now. OK, let’s reach even further back into Burlington’s past.

13.) Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights) – The N-Zones
14.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget
15.) Breathe – Ninja Custodian
16.) Cowgirl In The Sand – Real Old and Insane Donkey

That was a band that Seth Yacovone put together to play some Neil Young songs. Ninja used to play cool covers back in the late ’80’s at Nectar’s and other places. Bridget played last Saturday and are playing the next couple of Saturday’s at Nectar’s. N-Zones played back in the early ’80’s or late ’70’s. Burlington has a lot of great original music but we do like covers too. OK, this next band will make a rare appearance in town at Light Club Lamp Shop tomorrow at 7:30.

17.) Northern Skies – The Lindbergh Baby
18.) Say It – Anachronist
19.) A Company Man – Carraway
20.) Drug Laws – SWALE

I love the way that song continuously rocks. Such a fun song from Carraway. Great songs form Anachronist and Lindbergh. So, last Friday there were a bunch of cool bands who played at the Art Hop but heavy rain wiped out most of the outside shows. This band saw a break in the weather, got set up and began to play as the rain came back. This was the only song of their set and they are such troopers for even playing that one.

21.) The Original Original – Black Rabbit
22.) Good Times – Grand
23.) Shark – Greaseface
24.) Blank Daze – Mr. Doubtfire
25.) Blue Lights – Sink or Swim

Sink will play a show this Saturday. Ask them for the detains since it’s an underground show. Doubtfire and Grand played a great show at Radio Bean Monday night. Grease are playing at the Monkey House on Saturday. OK, let’s keep rocking.

26.) By Design – The Nancy Druids
27.) The Great Forgetter – The New Siberians
28.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
29.) Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT

Those are four of many the great songs to come out of the Burlington scene. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. There was lots of great music in town last week and a staggering amount this week. Let’s begin with a band who blew me away the one time I saw them. They are in town tonight at ArtsRiot.

1.) The World Is A Loud Place – Landlady
2.) Favorite Bag – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
3.) Jessie – The Parts
4.) Hurricane – Landlady

I saw Landlady at Signal Kitchen once and was amazed. I’m psyched they are back in town tonight. This weekend is Art Hop in the South End. There are lots of bands playing and there is one amazing show in an alley by the Green Door which is behind ArtsRiot to the right and not far from Howard St. The Parts are one of the many bands playing there. That’s a brand new song from Phil Yates‘ upcoming album. Yea, Landlady. OK, let’s play the next song from Loose Tooth.

5.) Loose Tooth – Clever Girls
6.) Strawberry Blonde – Dino Bravo VT
7.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit
8.) Bridge To Panda Chaos – Zeus Springsteen

Zeus will be at the Green Door show as will Rabbit and Dino. Great song from Clever. This next band will be at a couple of shows at Art Hop including one at Friends of Jim’s Basement.

9.) 25 Miles Per Hour Blues – Better Things
10.) Voodoo Wave – The High Breaks
11.) America Religious – Caroline Rose

13.) Better Than You Think – Eastern Mountain Time
14.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
15.) Vermonter – James Kochalka
16.) Cocktail Hour – David L Jarvis

Dave used to play around in the ’90’s and is back in town. He’s working on a new baroque pop band called The New Victorians so it will be cool to see what that sounds like. I think they will play that classic song. Great song from James about what it’s like to be in Vermont and to not be in Vermont. Francesca will be at Hotel Vt this Friday. This next band played the after Madaila show at Nectar’s last Saturday.

17.) All Down Tonight – SWALE
18.) Staring Our The Window – ROUGH FRANCIS
19.) Not In My Name – Dysfunkshun
20.) Burn – Dirty Blondes

The Blondes, and a couple of other bands, will be at the Dysfunkshun reunion show at Higher Ground on Saturday. Francis and Swale put on amazing shows at Nectar’s last Saturday. OK, here’s a classic Burlington rocker.

21.) Bloodboy – Envy
22.) Nightmare On Elm Street – Savage Hen
23.) Mr Reed – Seth Yacovone Band
24.) I Know, Right – The Mountain Says No

I haven’t caught up with Mountain in a while but love it when I do. Great rocker from Seth and the band. It was fun watching Hen put the Nightmare jump rope theme into song form at the Robot Dog Studio session last week. Classic from Envy. OK, there’s not much time left. Let’s end where we began.

25.) The Globe – Landlady
26.) It’ll Be OK – Let’s Whisper
27.) In The Rain – Plan B
28.) Above My Ground – Landlady

I love how hard that song rocks at the end. Classic from B and quite appropriate with all the rain we’ve had lately. Great song from Whisper and another great one from Landlady. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Francesca is pretty amazing and will be at Foam Brewers tomorrow night. I caught a set by Forest at Nectar’s last Saturday and really enjoy his music. Madaila are throwing a huge party all day Saturday and will block off Main street in front of Nectar’s and play with a bunch of other bands. You’ve just got to love them. I caught a set by Milton on Tuesday at Light Club Lamp Shop and his band the Grim Work are really good. Great song from David about the Paris attacks and how we can change from being alive to stardust in an instant. Clever are playing at The Monkey House tomorrow and always put on a great show, though there’s so many other shows happening that night too. OK, there is a cool after Madaila party at Nectar’s and this band will be there.

9.) Felon – SWALE
10.) The Perfect Map – Elephants of Scotland
11.) Constant Disaster – When Particles Collide
12.) Blind Pigs – ROUGH FRANCIS

Francis will be at the after show party at Nectar’s too and I’m very excited. Particles played a great version of that last night at the Monkey House. Elephants are playing a show in New Haven Vermont on Saturday with their new bass player Robert Gagnon. Hmmm, Swale. OK, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for an interview and live songs from Savage Hen. It’s another edition of WBKM live at Robot Dog Studio.

13.) Voodoo Revenge – Savage Hen
14.) The Wrong List – Savage Hen
15.) Clever Girl – Savage Hen
16.) Local Lore – Savage Hen

I want to thank Ryan Cohen for making us sound so good and to thank Jack Kubera, Matthew Bryan Hagen and Jeremy Gartner for rocking so hard. OK, let’s keep rocking.

17.) Comm To Space – Rough Francis
18.) Storm Cloud – When Particles Collide
19.) TFAY – Elephants Of Scotland
20.) Elevator – Swale

I’m so psyched to see Swale and Francis and am thinking the timing might be too tight to get back from New Haven in time. Sigh. Particles played that one last night too. OK, let’s keep rocking.

21.) Children Of The Stars – Madaila
22.) The Meanest Thing I’ll Ever Write – Milton Busker
23.) Hope In The Dark – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
24.) Catch And Release – Clever Girls

Clever have been opening with that song and I’m so glad they did a Robot Dog session with me so I have a copy to play for you. Yet another great song from David. Milton’s albums sound different from his band but the songs have the same basic structure. They played a cool version of that on Tuesday. I love that Madaila song. I really like this song too.

25.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
26.) You’re Not Listening – Forest Gray
27.) Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist
28.) Let Me Be – Peter Burton

I thought I’d end where I began with great songs from Peter and Jeremy. Forest played a cool version of that on Saturday at Nectar’s. Francesca writes such great songs. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
