Song before: Countdown – Rush

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Let’s begin tonight with a cool artist who has been playing in a cool band who just released a solo album.

1.) Better Off Alone – Meg Rice
2.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
3.) Your Funeral – Zeus Springsteen
4.) 1965 – The New Siberians

That’s the next song on the Siberians great eponymous first album. Zeus played a killer show Monday at Higher Ground. Great song from Milton and it’s nice to see Meg step out. OK, this next band are from Rhode Island and they played Burlington once in the ’90’s and they have still stuck with me.

5.) We’re The Loops – The Mockingbirds
6.) Accidental Graveyard – The Dead Shakers
7.) Safe To Say – SWALE
8.) Mr Reed – Seth Yacovone Band

Seth and the band will be at the Old Post in South Burlington on Saturday. Swale will be at ArtsRiot on Saturday. The Shakers will be at Junktiques Collective on Saturday. If you like all three songs, you will have a tough choice to make. This next band will be at Radio Bean on Sunday, yea.

9.) The Space Between – The Nancy Druids
10.) Right Bright Lord – The Mountain Says No
11.) Waste Of Time – Preece
12.) If You Die – The Wards
13.) Jurassic Bark – Doom Service

That is on the Live From Robot Dog Studio Volume 2 that just came out. I really want to thank Ray Padgett from County Tracks for writing such a nice story about my struggle with my mother’s death last year, and the way that music helped me get through it. That was very nice. The Wards rocked us in the ’80’s and will continue rocking us later this evening. Great songs from Preece and Mountain. Both can be obtained for free on the Live From Robot Dog Studio Volume 2 album. I’m so psyched to see the Druids on Sunday. OK, It’s time to talk about a naughty word that apparently is fine to say in public by a fine moral leader like the President Of The United States. Wow, our decency standards as a nation are just gone now, as proven by the moral tolerance of the President’s speech by his “moral” base.

14.) Bullshit – Blue Button
15.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
16.) Fear The Government – The Wards
17.) Weapon Factory take 4 – The Wards
18.) Bernie Is A Punk – BERN UNIT
19.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday

That song is such a lovely look at life when Bernie was Mayor of Burlington. He would make a decent President. Nice reworking of the Ramones song by the band from California. I though a double shot of Wards would be nice. I don’t think we need to fear the government but we do need to elect decent caring people, which we often do not do for odd reasons. Nice rockers from Doubtfire and Button. OK, here’s a brand new punk song.

20.) A Song About Riding Bikes Adrienne Cooper Smith
21.) Awake To Steak – Black Hairy Tongue
22.) Six O’ Clock – The Wards
23.) Decide – Dave Jarvis Band
24.) Prime – Black Rabbit

Great rocker from Rabbit. That’s not even on one of their albums yet. Classic ’90’s rocker from Dave. Nice punk from the ’80’s with the Wards. BHT straddled that line between the ’80’s and ’90’s. Adrienne is out rocking us today. This next band is doing the same.

25.) This Town – Suburban Samurai
26.) An Obscene Amount Of Debt – Sink or Swim
27.) United States – The Wards
28.) We Need Bigger Knives – As We Were
29.) Bury Me Easy – Real Talk

Cool song from their new album. Were played around in the early 2010’s. American Imperialism was in full force in the ’80’s as the Wards so nicely point out. Sink and Suburban are out and about rocking us hard. This next band is doing the same.

30.) Warmonger – Smokestack Lightning
31.) Gettin’ High – Heavy Plains
32.) Bit O Honey – Happy Spangler
33.) Magic In This Mystery – Robin Gottfried Band

Robin and his band will be at On Tap Bar & Grill on Saturday. Fun song from Spangler. Great rockers from Heavy and Smokestack. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Kashmir – Led Zeppelin

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin with a song that I saw performed live a couple of weeks ago, that is still stuck in my head. It’s a sad lyric, but such a happy song.

2.) Gravity – Milton Busker and the Grim Work
3.) Middlesex – SWALE
4.) My Old House – Andriana Chobot

Andriana and her trio played earlier today at The Skinny Pancake. She’s always amazing. That’s such a sad lyric and happy music from Swale. Same for Milton and J. Great songs everyone. OK, Let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for an interview and live performance.

6.) Old Souls Of Chatham County – Jeremy Gilchrist
7.) Leonard – Jeremy Gilchrist
8.) Interstellar Kid – Jeremy Gilchrist
9.) Indigenous Souls – Jeremy Gilchrist

I know we usually do four songs, but we had to do five for Jeremy for obvious reasons. Thanks for making us sound so great Ryan Cohen Thanks to Phoebe Zorn and Christian James for the video work on Indigenous Souls, which is on YouTube now. OK, this next performer will be a Radio Bean tomorrow.

10.) De Colores – Marcie Hernandez
11.) Can You Love me Too? – Bethany Conner Music
12.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
13.) Brothers – Troy Millette Music
14.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler

What a lovely sentiment and fantastic song from Joe. Troy will be at Light Club Lamp Shop tomorrow. Francesca has a show on Sunday at Meadowlark Studio on Sunday. Bethany will be at The Skinny Pancake tomorrow. OK, let’s play an appropriate song from a band who are at SideBar tonight.

15.) Winter Blues – The Red Newts
16.) Cold Wind – The Thursday Torys
17.) Ode To The River – Julia Caesar
18.) Ice Diver – The High Breaks

The Breaks will treat us to some icy surf music at Nectar’s tomorrow. Julia will be at Radio Bean tomorrow. The Torys will be at The Monkey House tomorrow. Cool song from the Newts. OK, this band will be at the Bean tomorrow night with Julia.

19.) Flaca Daza – Miku Daza
20.) Hawks – Happy Spangler
21.) Lifetime – Radio Underground
22.) Release The Beast – The Mountain Says No

I haven’t pulled that one out for a while, and lust love it. Cool songs from Radio and Spangler. Miku always rocks. OK, here is the next song on the New Siberians album.

23.) Star – The New Siberians
24.) Jessie – Danny & The Parts
25.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
26.) Turn Your Face Towards Tomorrow – Midnight Vigil

Vigil will be at Radio Bean Saturday night. Great rockers from Phil and Danny. I love that Siberians song. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time Thursday July 6 and can be streamed at WBKM.ORG or from our Facebook page WBKM. It will go as follows:

Song before: The Loops – The Mockingbirds

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Let’s begin with a Burlington legend who is getting one of her bands back together for a show next week.

1.) First Kiss – Peg Tassey MUSIC
2.) Trouble Come No More – Cricket Blue
3.) Many Things And Many Scenes – Joe Adler
4.) The Worst Part – Bethany Conner Music

It’s been a while since I’ve been lucky enough to hear Bethany play but I saw she had a show listed recently so hopefully she will come back to town soon. Joe and his band played a nice version of that in the rotary in the Winooski traffic circle yesterday. It’s a nice setup. Cricket are playing in Essex on Friday and at Light Club Lamp Shop on Saturday. OK, here is the next song on Lights, Camera, Action and is the first song on the Action EP.

5.) Not Quite As Good – 1881
6.) Loose Tooth – Clever Girls
7.) Freeway – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
8.) Giving Up The Ghost – Aaron Flinn

I just love that song by local legend Aaron. David will be at Switchback on Friday at 6. I’m working until 7 so it may not work out but check him out if you can. The Girls are playing at SideBar on Saturday and that should be a great time. OK, this next band are releasing their new album tomorrow. It’s called There’s No One Here and these songs will be on it.

9.) Here’s Where You Were – SWALE
10.) Wooden Heart – Swale
11.) Release Your Records – Swale
12.) Every Last One Of Us – Swale

They just played a great show in the Intervale today and will be at the Lamp Shop tomorrow for the official release. Yea!! I saw this band once and liked them and they are back in town next week.

13.) The Field – The Dead Shakers
14.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy
15.) Stratosphere – Joe Adler
16.) Strings – Binger

Binger are now playing as Joe’s backup band The Rangers of Danger. They did a great version of Stratosphere in Winooski yesterday. Summer is a ’90’s Burlington classic. Last week The Nancy Druids pulled out this Envy song.

17.) 1,000 :Lies – Sean Toohey
18.) Lonesome Lullaby – Gabrielle Douglas and the Dwellers
19.) So They Say – The New Siberians
20.) Teenage Mother Earth – The Red Telephone

Telephone made such great music. Another great new song from the Siberians. Lonesome is a Gabby song but really sounds like a Cush song. OK, last week I saw Dino Bravo with David Evan sitting in on drums and that makes Zeus Springsteen a subset of that version of Dino Bravo.

21.) Bridge To Panda Chaos – Zeus Springsteen
22.) Strawberry Blonde – Dino Bravo VT
23.) Hell Chicken – Swillbillie
24.) Into The Void – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. I usually play a lot of music from bands who play in Burlington and from all over Vermont, but tonight let’s take a trip around New England and check out some cool songs from the past and present.

1.) Two Sleep Arms – Lendway
2.) The Loops (We’re Those Kids) – The Mockingbirds
3.) Uh Oh – Slowdim
4.) Lean In – When Particles Collide

Particles used to live in Maine but have moved to New Hampshire. They will be doing a tour soon, so check them out if you like to rock. Slowdim are from Boston and have some amazing songs. The Mockingbirds were a 90’s band from Rhode Island. That’s such a great song, and highlights the struggle for musicians to be able to get health care, among other things. Lendway were from Vermont and I miss them. Michael moved to California but the other three guys formed The High Breaks and Matt Hagen is in a few other bands too. OK, it’s time for the next song on the album Bernie Sanders recorded with 30 VT artists back in the 80’s.

5.) The Banks of Marble – Bernie Sanders
6.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
7.) New Atlantis – Aaron Flinn
8.) Flicker Flutter – Alpenglow

That’s another song from their brand new album Callisto. I had to play the Aaron song because it’s so good, and it’s been raining so much today it reminds me of an underwater kingdom. I love the song about Bernie that really highlights how Bernie’s policies, when enacted, can help make a beautiful city and help people get health care, even musicians. The imagery in that song is so clear. I love the song by Bernie that shows how he has kept the same message for such a long time. Unwavering. One of the great musicians to come out of Burlington has a birthday today. Here is a tiny bit of the music that she has brought to this world.

9.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
10.) Dragged Around The Universe – Queen Tangerine
11.) Void – The Lavas
12.) Wing To Me – Alice Austin
13.) Left One In The Rain – Alice Austin

I had to play Rain, since it’s been such a damp day. That is from a recent ep. Wing is from her solo album To A Star In The Yard. Alice started in Zola then moved to QT, then The Lavas before heading out on her own. Thanks for all the great music Alice!! OK, this next song has been running though my head lately.

14.) Neighborhood – Black Rabbit
15.) Righteous – Rough Francis
16.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
17.) Bootstrap – Mac Swan & Black Holly
18.) Be Aggressive – Be Aggressive

Aggressive are from Bradford but come up to rock Burlington now and then. Matt Hagen from Lendway plays bass with Holly, and the metal/punk band uses a banjo instead of guitar. Matt also plays bass with Hen who just have bass, drum, and vocals. Great song from the last Francis album. I can’t wait for the next one. Great song from Rabbit. This next band are playing Saturday at Radio Bean

19.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
20.) Crow King – Binger
21.) Kids – Wren Kitz
22.) Doris – Wren Kitz

Those are the closing two pieces form Wren’s new album For Evelyn. He is doing a release show for the album tomorrow. Binger are playing tomorrow at Radio Bean. This next band just had their Kickstarter funded and have begun recording their first full album. It can be a wild ride to see if a band gets a Kickstarter funded and I’m so glad they made it. Here is one form their first EP.

23.) Afterall (Glad We Made It) – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
24.) Last Love – Myra Flynn
25.) Naive Melody – Strange Machines (W Hayley Jane)
26.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow

Such a lovely and powerful song from Crow. They are from Rutland. Machines are from Boston and come to Burlington now and then. That was recorded in February this year at Nectar’s. Great song from Myra. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week. Ta ta.

27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington.Last week we were in the ninety degree range, but it’s cooled off nicely this week. It’s a cool evening. It’s nice night for a light coat and a long walk. This is Overcoat by Swale on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Overcoat – Swale
2.) Ease The Burn – Sarah Blacker
3.) Better Half – Abbie Morin
4.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard

Great new song from Francesca who is making some waves. Abbie is off touring the country. Check her out if she stops by your town. I was driving around yesterday listening to In Waves and Red Flannel Hash. A lot of Sarah’s songs grabbed me, and Ease just wanted to get played tonight. Swale turned 13 last Saturday and played a show at Radio Bean with lots of cool bands. They were so good and Eric Olsen and Amanda Gustafson have been so over the top kind lately, that I want to say an extra thanks for everything, especially the music. This next singer has an album of kids music coming out soon. She plays a show every Friday morning at Radio Bean.

5.) Tell Me – Linda Bassick
6.) Marriage Song – Satori Bob
7.) Forsythia – Cricket Blue
8.) Megan’s Song – Hana Zara
9.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

A great song from a great writer and performer. I think she will be at Signal Kitchen in December. Great love her madly line in the Hana song. Cricket are making waves in town and touring too. Gorgeous song from Satori. If marriage is the ties that bind, then why do I feel so free? Yay Linda! OK, here is the next song from No Need To Beg.

10. Co-Pilot – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
11.) Garden Flower – Maryse Smith
12.) Letter From The 21st – Jeremy Gilchrist
13.) Emily – The Grift

Great song from the classic Burlington band. Great song from Jeremy. Maryse is just ridiculously good. I just love Phil’s sense of songwriting. I just got an e-mail with a new song from this band who used to play Burlington all the time.

14.) Donna – Rubblebucket Orchestra
15.) Unveiled – Pours
16.) Biological Immortality – Wren Kitz
17.) Two Sleepy Arms – Lendway

I miss Lendway. Cool weird song from Wren. Pours played the Swale birthday party too, and did a great version of that song. My brother Ken had some dental work done today, so I want to dedicate this to him.

18.) Perfect Teeth – When Particles Collide
19.) My Bitter End – Blue Button
20.) Bloodboy – Envy
21.) Asphyxia – Better Things

BT always play out and I keep missing them and really need to step up my game. They are very good. I’ve been playing a lot of new music so I though I’d toss in a classic Envy song. Killer song from BB who also played a killer set at the Swale birthday party. Particles are just a great band. This next song is a classic and I can’t believe I’ve never played it.

22.) Silver & Gold – Waylon Speed
23.) 1965 – The New Siberians
24.) We’re The Loops – The Mockingbirds
25.) Nowhere Feel Like Home – Fire The Cannons
26.) You Don’t Like Me, Do Ya? – Pinhead

Lots of classic Burlington rock in there, except for Mockingbirds who were from Rhode Island and played here once. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? OK, let’s let Black Rabbit take us out.

I just got back from tonight’s local music show on WBKM.ORG. I got in early and started playing tunes at 8:20, with the full show from 9-10ish.

Song Before: Southside – Anderson and Wakeman

promo

Intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’m sorry about missing last weeks show, but had a good time going to Albany to see The Waterboys Official. The leaves were turning and it was a beautiful day. Tonight we are going to start a bit to the south, in Middlebury. This is Girl In My Head by Jer Coons and this is Burlington’s kind of music on WBKM

1.) Girl In My Head – Jer Coons
2.) Even Cowgirls Get The Blues – The Mockingbirds
3.) Hey Ernie – Cold Sweat

Today is James Curley’s birthday, so I had to play some Sweat. I remember seeing them play at Texas so many times. We used to travel to see them in Glens Falls and Clifton Park, NY, so it was cool to drive by there on the way to see the Waterboys. Scott Fultz from Sweat went to the Egg a couple of days after the Waterboys and he got to see Steve Hackett play some Genesis songs. That must have been cool. Before that was a band from Rhode Island that played town once but made a huge mark on me. Great stuff! Next is the next song from Swale’s A Small Arrival.

4.) Electable – Swale
5.) The Low Lights – Sian Alice Group
6.) Traveler – Lir

Back in the early ’90’s Lir came over from Ireland, set up base in Boston and played Burlington a bunch of times. I loved all of those shows. Once night I went to The Monkey House, saw a couple of cool local bands, and Sian Alice Group from London played and blew me away. Go see music, you never know what that mysterious band in the listings might sound like. Hmmm Swale. New album soon? Next up, Linda Bassick plays with Tickle Belly at Radio Bean Friday mornings, plays with Steady Betty, and plays on most of the Moody Blues cruises.

7.) All I Need – Linda Bassick and Tickle Belly
8.) Wedding Song – Anais Mitchell
9.) Until The Day I Die – Slingshot Dakota

Tom Patterson and Carly Commando, aka Slingshot Dakota, just got married. Congratulations! Now they have to love each other until the day they die, they made vows. Wedding song is dedicated to them. Now, let’s go classic Burlington

10.) The Spy Song – Pinhead
11.) Opium Spy Thriller – Ninja Custodian
12.) Mary – Plan B

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town, Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

My brother Ken and I are going to see Hawkwind next week so I’m going to play some of them soon, but here is the first song on the new Fish album

Song After: Perfume River – Fish
