Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows.

Song before: Under Bright Stars – Alice Austin

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. I want to thank Higher Ground for being such a great rock club and for sponsoring our station. Let’s begin with one of those great Burlington songs that gets performed now and then.

1.) Once Upon – Vedora
2.) Let Me Be – Peter Burton
3.) Forsythia – Cricket Blue
4.) Bury Me – Forest Gray

Forest has so many fun songs. I wanted to play a song about flowers since we got a nice snowstorm this morning. Thanks Cricket. Great song from Peter. That was recorded live by Ryan Cohen at Robot Dog Studio a couple of weeks ago. Last week I went back to the studio with Jeremy Gilchrist for the second part in the ongoing series. Here is the interview and the three songs he played.

5.) Faded Movie Reel – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
6.) Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist
7.) Great Filter – Jeremy Gilchrist

Thanks to Ryan and Jeremy for making that happen. It will be fun to bring in bands to play live, now and then. OK, here is the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through song after song week after week. We are currently traveling though By My Side and here comes the rock song.

8.) The Light – Kat Wright
9.) A Question Mark To Answer – Seth Yacovone Band
10.) Little Song – Invisible Homes
11.) Ready To Race – Lendway

Those are all such great songs. Did you catch the theme? This next band will rock Foam Brewers tomorrow night.

12.) Surf Showdown – The High Breaks
13.) ME 262 – The Contrarian
14.) Game Of Thrones – The Mountain Says No
15.) Loose Tooth – Clever Girls

That’s the title song from the brand new EP by Clever Girls. I really need to get out and see them soon. Great song from Mountain. Great cover from Casey Merlin Rae. If you want to hear surf music on a winter day, head to Foam tomorrow. It’s late, so let’s play some sleepy time music.

16.) Sleepwalker – 1881
17.) The Call – Swillbillie
18.) Windigo – Crazyhearse
19.) Burn – Dirty Blondes

Blondes, Hearse, and Billie will play at The Monkey House on Saturday night so that should be fun. Great song from 1881. Last week I played one of the new songs from Slingshot Dakota. Here is the other.

20.) Grudge – Slingshot Dakota
21.) Black 17 – The New Siberians
22.) Make Me See Stars – The Lonestar Chain
23.) Crazy – Clever Girls

I really like that Clever new EP. Lonestar will be back for a show in May as part of Waking Windows. Great songs from Siberians and Slingshot. OK, let’s keep rocking.

24.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
25.) The Crisis – Ninja Custodian
26.) Hold me Tight – The Decentz
27.) Willow I – Tyler Daniel Bean
28.) Willow II – Tyler Daniel Bean

The video for Willow II is really cool. Decentz played in the ’80’s, the Ninja song was from the ’90’s and the Phil song is a couple of years old. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM went as follows:

recording begins
Song before: Alone – Children in Paradise

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to begin by thanking Higher Ground for sponsoring us here at the station. They have Smooth Antics playing tomorrow if you want to check that show out. There has been a lot of music about lately so let’s begin with a guy who played a solo show last Sunday at Radio Bean.

1.) Grass Is Always Greener – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
2.) Make Me See Stars – The Lonestar Chain
3.) Black 17 – The New Siberians
4.) The Last Of The Unplucked Gems (live) – The Tragically Hip

I saw music Saturday night and Sunday night so it was not until Monday that I watched the full last concert from The Hip. It was powerful and poignant. The have played in town many times and have played all over Vermont. All of their shows were great and they put a ton of beautiful music into our world. I cannot thank them enough. That new song from the Siberians has been stuck in my head since the album came out. I see no signs of it stopping soon. Great song from the Burette Douglas solo band. I love that Phil song and it was cool to see the stripped down show on Sunday. OK, here is the next and last song from Giant Places. It’s been so warm and sunny and everyone is driving around with the windows down.

5.) Windows Down – Lendway
6.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
7.) This Machine – Invisible Homes
8.) Love, Like Language – Happy Abandon

Happy played a stunningly great show at Foam Brewers last Friday. Homes followed and put on a great show too. Milton has a brilliant new album and is playing next Thursday at the Fairgrounds (???). OK, let’s rock. Better Things just released a new album called Getting Worse. This is the fist song.

9.) Getting Laid In New Hampshire – Better Things
10.) Carnage – Black Rabbit
11.) Lunacy – Cave Bees
12.) Ex-Files – Better Things

I’m psyched to check out Better Things on Saturday at 242 Main. I just checked out their new album and it’s really cool!! Bees played a stinging show at The Monkey House last Saturday. They were joined by Black Rabbit and Zeus Springsteen. Rabbit closed with that rocking song. Hmmm, Better Things. This next band are playing Saturday at the Enosburg Opera House.

13.) StatistiK – The Mountain Says No
14.) Blind Pigs – ROUGH FRANCIS
15.) U Thought U Ne Funk (intro) – DJ A-Dog
16.) Unveiled – Pours

I wanted to play the Pours song song for two reasons. One: It’s quite good and I like it. The second is that their drummer Chris Shar has had physical issues for years, and drummed his heart out for us for years anyway. He just started a Go Fund Me campaign to get a mobility device so he can get out and about more easily. He’s given a lot to us. It’s time for us to give back, if we can. DJ A-Dog passed away a few years ago but put a stamp on this town, and now there is a giant party every year for him. This happens all around town on Saturday. Tons of DJ’s and MC’s will play but a few bands, like Rough Francis, will play too. Forest Gray will play and this next band will play too.

17.) Colorful Girls – Dwight & Nicole
18.) Paint With The Sun – Arc Iris
19.) Scared – The Tragically Hip
20.) Science Fiction – Hana Zara

Hana move to Nebraska a while ago but is back in town tonight to enchant us with her beautiful music. I love that Hip song and and they did a great version of it at the last show on Saturday. Arc just released a new album full of songs they keep playing in Burlington. OK, let’s celebrate the return of Hana with a set of her songs.

21.) Santa Anna – Hana Zara
22.) Lithuania – Hana Zara
23.) Meghan’s Song – Hana Zara.

I love her music and her imagery and the way she lets her songs unfold around us. OK, time for a couple more. Let’s go out in style.

24.) Grace Too (live) – The Tragically Hip
25.) New Orleans is Sinking (live) The Tragically Hip

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show, streaming online at our Facebook page, WBKM.ORG and over the airwaves at 107.1FM. I highlighted a couple of upcoming shows and played some rock and roll.

Song before: Dannemora – Seth Yacovone

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Last Friday I made it out to see The High Breaks at Juniper at Hotel Vermont. They have just released their debut album and I got a copy. It’s called Droppin’ Off With The High Breaks. Let’s begin with a couple of songs from it.

1.) Ankle Breaker – The High Breaks
2.) Wicked World – The High Breaks
3.) The Big One – The High Breaks

Great rockers from the band. When they played last Friday they tossed in a few of the Surf Sabbath songs, including Wicked, so I thought that would be fun to toss Wicked into the set. OK, let’s continue on with the next song on Bernie Sanders album.

4.) This Land Is Your Land – Bernie Sanders and 30 VT Artists
5.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
6.) Mon Ange – Francesca Blanchard
7.) Friends – Myra Flynn

Great song from Myra. Francesca has a ton of shows coming up soon. I’m still loving the Bern song and Bernie and his message. So, a week ago Wednesday I got to see The Nancy Druids at WRUV then I got to see them again last Monday at the Monkey House. They put on a great show. I don’t have any of their music but here is some from Sean’s previous bands.

8.) 1,000 Lies – Sean Toohey
9.) Sunday – Envy
10.) Today Is Tomorrow – The Red Telephone

Sean did that song with Matt Hutton last year. Sunday is a classic rocker from the ’90’s. Great solo song from Sean in the ’90’s. Speaking of the ’90’s, one of the classic bands from that era, The Pants, just had a movie made about them. The movie will be shown at Higher Ground on Saturday and then a ton of local musicians will play some Pants songs and maybe a few other classics from the era. Here are a few songs from the Pants;

11.) Vermont – The Pants
12.) Cows – The Pants
13.) Overboard – The Pants
14.) High Water Mark – The Pants

There’s a pretty good chance you will hear all of those on Saturday. You may hear some of the next songs too.

15.) All My Life – Wide Wail
16.) One More Grave – The Contrarian
17.) Old North Ender – James Kochalka Superstar
18.) Affection – Guppyboy

Chris Ziter & Jeff Baron from Guppyboy will be at the show. James will be at the show. Casey Rae will be at the show, and since Swale are the house band, Amanda from Wide Wail will be there. It’s going to be lots of fun. OK, up next I want to highlight a show that is happening on Friday at Club Metronome. It’s a benefit for the VNA Family Room and features Jamie Lee Thurston & The Starline Rhythm Boys.

19.) Best Damn Night – Jamie Lee Thurston
20.) Somebody Up There Loves Me – The Starline Rhythm Boys
21.) You Make Me See Stars – Lonestar Chain

Lonestar were Burette Douglas’ solo band and wrote a bunch of great songs, including that one. Stars always gets me going. Cool songs from Starline and Jamie. OK, let’s play some classic Burlington rock.

22.) Moving Song – Zola Turn
23.) Not True – Peg Tassey
24.) TFAY – Elephants Of Scotland
25.) Green Apple Girl – Dave Jarvis

Dave always wrote and played such fun songs. TFAY is such a great song. I just love Peg’s voice and energy and songs. Same goes for Zola. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Goodbye, Ta ta. See You, Sayonara.

26.Sayonara – Black Rabbit

outro

Songs After: Tumbledown – Fish
Empire Of The Clouds – Iron Maiden

As always, I want to thank everyone who made tonight’s show possible. Thanks to Seth Yacovone Band, The High Breaks, Matthew Bryan Hagen, Todd Gevry, Kevin Lynam, Michael Clifford, Bernie Sanders, Francesca Blanchard, Ann Mindell, The Red Telephone, Matt Hutton, Tom Lawson, Amanda Gustafson, The Contrarian, Casey Merlin Rae, The Lonestar Chain, Burette Douglas, Creston Lea, Steve Hadeka, Julia Austin, Alice Austin, Peg Tassey MUSIC, Peg Tassey, Elephants of Scotland, John M Whyte, Adam Rabin, Ornan McLean, Dan MacDonald, David Jarvis, Black Rabbit, Marc Scarano, Darlene Scarano, Jane Boxall Percussion, and everyone else!!!!

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. I had great plans to see lots of music this week, but twisted my ankle on Friday and sat (with leg up and icepack on) out too much of it. It’s a bit better now so I should be all set soon. Today has been cloudy and cool and humid and I’ve been in a spacey sort of mood. Let’s take a trip through the last 30 years in town and start with Move Through Time by Persian Claws on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws
2.) Pauses – Black Rabbit
3.) Your Downtown Aperture – Video Pigeon
4.) All My Life – Wide Wail

Killer song from a classic band from Burlington’s glorious ’90’s. Some people say Burlington bands come in waves and there are times when there is not much around. Even in those troughs bands like Video Pigeon were around rocking beautifully. Killer new song from Rabbit. Great song from the Claws!! OK, let’s stay in the ’90’s for a bit.

5.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy
6.) Last Man Standing – Band X
7.) Jules Rosen and Joe Steel – Brave The Vertigo
8.) One More Grave – The Contrarian

Casey Merlin Rae used to play in bands in town, then wrote the music column for Seven Days and is now working in DC to help find ways for musicians to get paid for their music. Yea!! I really wanted to check out Vertigo at Radio Bean last night, but the ankle said no. Killer song from Band X who sort of evolved into Elephants of Scotland. OK, let’s go on to the next song on JV, the album I’m playing all the way through week after week, song after song.

9.) Who could Say – The Mountain Says No
10.) Mad Captain – Brother Zag
11.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara
12.) Abilene – The Lonestar Chain

I’ve been watching the flooding in Texas and saw a mention on the Weather Chanel of Abilene and thought of Burette Douglas and this song. Killer song from Hana. Zag is one of the known unknown cool artists in town. Mountain will be at Radio Bean on Saturday and I really want to make it to the show. I was thinking of checking out this next band when they played Summervale today, but walking down the hill away from the radio station was not going to happen today, short of an act from God.

13.) Dear God – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
14.) Dancing In Dreamtime – Jerichovox
15.) Holiday – Guppyboy
16.) Old Man – Will

Killer song from the Rutland band from the early 2000’s. When they broke up they became Thompson Gunner and Split Tongue Crow. Killer song from the classic ’90’s band. Jericho are playing around a bit and were really cool when I saw them a couple of months back. OK, let’s go back to the early ’80’s, or maybe ’70’s.

17.) At The Diner – Zoot Wilson
18.) 2012 – Lobot
19.) Waterlanding – Swale
20.) Ladders – Heavy Plains

Nice song from the super new band who will be at Nectar’s tomorrow. Swale and one other band will be there too. A few weeks back Chris Farnsworth gave me a collection of songs that Lobot had left over. That one was pretty cool. Hmmm, Zoot. This next band is the other one playing Nectar’s tomorrow.

21.) Ruffians – ROUGH FRANCIS
22.) Gas And Oil – Gas And Oil
23.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight
24.) Stop – REDadmirial

Admiral were at The Old North Ender last night. I had hopes of checking out some of them then heading to the Bean for Vertigo, but it was the couch and ice for me. I’ve got to go see them! Killer song from the 2000’s punk band. Gas was Beano Parker, from the Wards, side project and really rocked! OK, in classic Burlington style, this next band will be at the Bean at the same time as the Nectar’s show tomorrow. Rats!! I love this band.

25.) It’s Happening – Anachronist
26.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Heroes (live) – King Crimson

intro

From our small city to the great big word, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Tonight I will speak a bit about the expanding and contracting nature of music, but on this cool autumn night, if you want to go for a walk, it would be good to put on your overcoat. This is Swale on Wbkm, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Overcoat – Swale
2.) Megaphone – Joshua Glass
3.) The Victory – And The Kids

And The Kids played a killer set at The Monkey House last Monday. Lots of Burlington’s finest musicians were there in the audience, including Josh. I really liked that song that I got from his http://jglassmusic.bandcamp.com/album/demos page. This time of the year always makes me think of the Swale song. Last week, I finished the last song from Zola Turn’s Ninja Jane. The next album I will play all the way through, one song per week, is the EP Row from Anachronist.

4.) Big Enough – Anachronist
5.) Happy New Year – Ninja Custodian
6.) Could You Be The One? – Phil Yates & The Affiliates

Phil and the band are playing two sets at the 4 Quarters brewery, in Winooski, tomorrow. The second set could be “interesting”. They start at 7. Swale’s 12th birthday party with And The Kids at Radio Bean is tomorrow at 9. It will be tough to make both with that timing. Also Gregory Douglas and Josh Glass are playing tomorrow in Winooski at Oak 45. Great song from Ninja! I caught this next singer last Saturday at Radio Bean. He did a great version of this.

7.) All The Same To You – Milton Busker
8.) Tell me – Linda Bassick
9.) Abiline – The Lonestar Chain
10.) Time In Space – The Cush

Lonestar just announced a show in November at Radio Bean! Yea. I hope that means a Cush show and a Dwellers show if Burette Douglas and Gabrielle Douglas are in town. Friend of the show, Linda is a great musician and a super person. Yesterday, I listened to the end or a radio show from Soho England where THE VACANT LOTS spent a lot of time with the host and played some cool songs including some of their own. This was one they played.

11.) Never Satisfied – The Vacant Lots
12.) Madrid Spain – The Lestons
13.) Paper Train – David L. Jarvis

Dave used to play all around town and is back in the neighborhood and just played a show in Wilmington with Mark Crowther as ‘Nuther Mother Brothers. It’s great to have them back rocking and I hope they come to town soon. I had to play that song from the Lestons because guitarist Matthew Stephen Perry‘s new band Dino Bravo is playing at Club Metronome at 11, and the Lots started their European tour in Spain. Up next is a suite of songs from a new album I’m trying to wrap my head around.

14.) Sequoia 1 – Binger
15.) Sequoia 2 – Binger
16.) Sequoia 3 – Binger

Nice lyrics about starting from roots and growing. Nice ability to be comfortable with almost any musical style. It’s autumn in Vermont. We don’t have Sequoia’s but we have apple trees and it’s harvest season.

17.) Green Apple Girl – Dave Jarvis Band
18.) 2 Hot 2 Be A Prostitute – The Lestons
19.) 6 AM – The Vacant Lots

I think I saw something saying the Lots might play town at the BCA center in October. They are out touring Europe, having songs mixed by Sonic Boom and putting out singles with Alan Vega. Way to live the dream Lots. I did not know the Lestons back in the day, but Matt’s next band, Party Star, used to play that song all the time. If the Cush come back to town, they should have a new album. Here’s one from their last.

20.) We Are The Beautiful Sunsets – The Cush
21..) Make Me See Stars – The Lonestar Chain
22.) One From Two – Linda Bassick
23.) Dogs At The Door – Milton Busker

Milton played a killer version of that last Saturday at Radio Bean. He used a foot pedal to fill out the sound and his voice and guitar to drive the song. Great song from Linda, who also plays trumpet on some of the Phil Yates songs.

24.) Might As Well Settle – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
25.) Cinnamon Girl – Ninja Custodian
26.) Nothing’s Here To Stay – Anachronist

Great song from Static and Light the new Anachronist album. When they sent me the CD I bought, they tossed in a had written note with a couple of cool drawings. Thanks guys! Back in the ’80’s Ninja had some original songs but played a lot of covers. I love their version of that one. Well, if you’ve paying attention, you know the next song is another from And The Kids.

27.) Wiser – And The Kids
28.) What’s In California? – Joshua Glass Music
29.) The Next Instead – Swale

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town, let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. The last few weeks, when I’ve walked down to do the show, there has been a little light left in the sky. Tonight there was none, darkness has come. This bend just released their new album and it features several of my favorite songs that have been played around town recently. I’ve been waiting and waiting to be able to play this song. This is the title song from Swale‘s new album The Next Instead on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) The Next Instead – Swale
2.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
3.) I’ve Arrived – Anachronist

Great new song from the VT band’s new album Static and Light. It was fun to listen to that album this morning. Great song from Joe Adler and the Rangers. Yea, I can play the Swale song any time I want now. The night is dark and the weather is chilly. Here is a song about the cold.

4.) Lithuania – Hana Zara
5.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
6.) 15 Steps – Maryse Smith
7.) Leonard Cohen – Violette Ultraviolet

I love it when I get to see VU play. Sunday at Radio Bean Joe and friends are doing a tribute to Leonard and will play lots of his songs. On Saturday Milton will play a set. Tomorrow at the Bean Ryan Ober‘s band will play. It looks like I will be spending some time there this weekend. I went there on Wednesday and saw Hana play a ton of new songs. What a great show. Maryse walked through at one point. Here is another great Vermont artist.

8.) Pauses – Lowell Thompson and Crown Pilot
9.) Where Are You Tonight? – The Lonestar Chain
10.) Days Remain The Same – Waylon Speed
11.) Waiting For You – Swale

Another great song from Swale’s new album. Waylon always rock, though that’s a bit of a mellower song. Great song from Burette Douglas and a few of Burlington’s finest. Same for the Lowell song and band. Congratulations to Carly Comando and Tom Patterson on their marriage and for putting a new effort into getting on the road with their band. Here are a couple of their songs. I hope they come to town when they start traveling.

12.) Until The Day I Die (pt 1) – Slingshot Dakota
13.) Until The Day I Die (pt 2) – Slingshot Dakota
14.) Golgi Apparatus – The Pants
15.) Crow King – Binger

I just got Binger’s new album Roots In The Rabbit Hole. I saw them kick off The Precipice: A Vermont Music Festival this year and really liked them. I have to get to know the album a bit. The Pants are a classic Burlington band having a bit of fun. I’m hoping Justin Gonyea was serious about bringing Slingshot back to town. Last Friday my brother Ken and I, and a couple of friends from work went to the Monkey House to see Shepard’s Pie, The Cave Bees and this band. I can’t believe how much Jane Boxall added to their sound. This set is dedicated to Ken and this is the song they opened with:

16.) Mark My Words – Black Rabbit
17.) Mine All Mine – Cave Bees
18.) Not A Nice Guy – ROUGH FRANCIS
19.) Popular Crowd – Swale

Another killer song from Swale’s new album. Great song from Francis, a band who could break huge any moment now. Great song about an alligator from the Bees. Up next is the last song from Zola Turn’s Ninja Jane album. This is one of the great rock songs to have come out of Burlington.

20.) It’s Real Again – Zola Turn
21.) Sun In The Sky – Ninja Custodian
22.) Boys With Guns – Chin Ho!

Three classic Burlington bands. With so much strife in the world, and boys with guns ruling harshly, it’s nice to watch what is happening in Scotland and the UK. Whether they separate or stay together, the process they are using to decide is very civil, and a wonderful model on how to make such a large change. As summer has faded into fall, the sun in the sky is coming in at a different angle and night is expanding.

23.) Angle Of The Sun – Peg Tassey MUSIC
24.) Two Of Us – Anachronist

Another great song from the new Anachronist album. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
