WBKM

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM.ORG will stream at our website and the WBKM Facebook page. It will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time Thursday July 27 and go as follows:

Song before: Accidents Will Happen – Elvis Costello

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last week had a ton of great shows and this week looks the same. We’re lucky to have so much great music and so many great events happening all the time. Let’s begin tonight with an artist who played live on the show last week.

1.) Dig Him – Andriana Chobot
2.) Child – Clare Byrne: Song and Dance
3.) Mon Ange – Francesca Blanchard
4.) Paris Is For Love – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

I saw David and the band play a lovely version of that song last week at American Flatbread Burlington Hearth. They are playing Sunday night at Radio Bean about 10pm. Hopefully, they will start a couple of minutes late so everyone can watch Game Of Thrones first. I haven’t caught up with Francesca in a while but still love her music. Thanks to Ted Looby for turning me on to Clare’s music. Great song from Andriana. OK, here is the next song on Action.

5.) 8 Long Years – 1881
6.) Skeleton Star – The Cush
7.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
8.) Felon – SWALE

That’s another great song from Swale’s new album There’s No One Here. Great song from Milton from his album You Are What You Pretend To Be. That’s a new song from The Cush from the Dreamy Life Records compilation Group Therapy Volume 3 and it’s always exciting to play new music from them! Great song from 1881. This next artist just released an EP called Pizzaface and here is one of the songs.

9.) Automatic Sweetheart – Hammydown
10.) The Feeling Is Strange – Binger
11.) Low Flying Planes – Chin Ho
12.) Shy Spiders – Villanelles

Spiders is already one of the great Vermont songs. Planes is a classic from the ’90’s. Binger have lots of shows coming up including the The Skinny Pancake Burlington on Saturday. They always put on a great show. Great stuff from Abbie Gail and the band. This next band will be at SideBar next Wednesday.

13.) Art Of Vandalay – Sad Turtle
14.) Bullet – REDadmiral
15.) Last Love – Myra Flynn Music
16.) You’ve Got Problems – Kat Wright

Great song form Kat Wright and the band. Myra could be anywhere in the world but comes back to town now and then to enchant us with her lovely music. Nice rocker from Admiral and cool song from Turtle. I have not caught up with this next band for a while and hopefully they will have new music soon.

17.) Little Song – Invisible Homes
18.) Bad Oasis – farm
19.) Sun-Dipped Orphan and The Wizard’s Tea Pot – Elephants of Scotland
20.) That’s When I Reach For My Revolver – Ninja Custodian

Classic rocker from Ninja. Great song from Elephants. I can’t wait for their next album. Stunning song from Farm. Lovely song from Homes. OK, Brendan Devitt from Ninja is in a new band and this song is already a classic.

21.) Black 17 – The New Siberians
22.) Happy Song – Shred Flintstone
23.) Killing Ghosts – Better Things
24.) We’re Closed – Blue Button

Wonderful rocker from Button. Things and Shred are playing over at Friends of Jim’s Basement tonight. Great song from the Siberians. OK, tomorrow this next guy turns 50 so let’s celebrate.

25.) Green Apple Girl – David L Jarvis
26.) Oh Dirty Blondes – Dirty Blondes
27.) All My Life – Wide Wail
28.) Decide – Dave Jarvis Band

Again, happy almost birthday Dave. Classic song from Wail. My heart goes out to Diane Sullivan who just lost her brother but played a great show with the Blondes last week anyway. We love you Diane!

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

29.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. It was a little rough with the last song popping out of the player when I put a song into the queue, and having a couple of breaks blown away by the very busy Fire Department, but fortunately the songs were great, and held the day.

Songs before: 21st Century Schizoid Man (live) – April Wine
Move Through Time – Persian Claws

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. There is a lot of great music happening in town this week and there was a lot last week. The GPN festival with many great national bands, many great local bands and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals is Saturday and Sunday, but last Saturday was all about this guy. This is Shoreline In Jersey by Joe Adler and the Rangers of Danger on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Shoreline in Jersey – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
2.) Smile – Dwight & Nicole
3.) The Heart Is King – Pinhead
4.) Neighbors – And The Kids

And The Kids played a killer show opening for Joe last Saturday at Nectar’s. The crowd loved them and were completely on for the ride. Classic song from a great Burlington band. Have you seen the Dwight and Nicole video for smile? It will make you do so. Great song from Joe. So yea, tons of music at the waterfront in Burlington, lead by this band.

5.) Nothing But The Water (pt 1) – Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
6.) Hometown – Gold Town
7.) Parking Lot – Villanelles
8.) Nothing But The Water (pt 2) – Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

I remember seeing Grace at Nectar’s on a couple of cold February days a long time ago, and watching the audience grow week to week, despite the sub zero temperatures. I knew she was taking off. I’m glad to see how big of a band they have become. The Villanelles are fun live. Both they and Gold Town are playing GPN along with other great bands like Anders Parker Cloud Badge, The High Breaks, Caroline Rose and lots of others. It should be a great time. OK, let’s play the next song on Ninja Jane. This one always rocked live!

9.) Fly On The Wall – Zola Turn
10.) Surface Tension – The Pants
11.) Never Satisfied – THE VACANT LOTS

Great song from their album Departure. They started in Burlington but now play all over the US and just started a tour of Europe. The Pants and Zola are great Burlington bands from the ’90’s. Last Saturday before the Rangers show, I went to the basement of one of the greatest music advocates in town, James Lockridge, and saw some heavy punk rock. I loved the twin guitars in this song.

12.) We Need Bigger Knives – As We Were
13.) Impaled On A Cuddly Spike – Dog Hospice
14.) The Wrong Song – The Lentils
15.) Green Peaks \ Dark Valleys – Get A Grip

I missed Grip at the party but loved the pure fury of that 44 second song. The Lentils played acoustic punk at the party and were lots of fun. I need to get more of their music. Dog Hospice was one guy with guitars strapped to his drum kit and the mic taped to his mouth with duct tape. It was kind of a cool show. Up next is a band who played the show, but went on before I could get there. Fortunately they are playing tomorrow night at The Monkey House, and I will be there!

16.) Black Cat – Black Rabbit
17.) Round Sum – Cave Bees
18.) Weapons Factory – The Wards

That was a classic ’80’s punk band. Cave Bees and Shephard’s Pie are playing the Monkey House show, but I don’t have any of the latter to play, yet. Up next is a great new song from a new favorite band who have played around for a long time.

19.) Demon Moon – Crazyhearse
20.) B.A. Pariah – Endless Jags
21.) Everyone Likes To Fight – Swale

Swale’s new album should be out very soon on white vinyl with a bonus album full of remixes. They are playing Saturday at 4pm at GPN if you want to see them. Great song from Jags who come to town now and then. In the north end of town you can go down almost any street and see lots of sunflowers.

22.) Sunflower Street – David L. Jarvis
23.) Old North Ender – James Kochalka Superstar
24.) Can’t Feel It – Vetica
25.) The Love You Feel – Lowell Thompson and Crown Pilot

Lowell has played around forever and is playing at GPN. Got a sense of how good it’s going to be yet? Great song from Vetica. Dave and James are classic Burlington artists. Sunday, after GPN, there is a huge after party at Higher Ground featuring Marco Benevento. Here is a song with him and Kat Wright live at Radio Bean

26.) I Put A Spell On You – Marco Benevento and Kat Wright
27.) A Quiet Pun – Joe Adler and the Rangers Of Danger
28.) Say It – Anachronist
29.) Until The Day I Die – Slingshot Dakota

Sorry that song got cut and my outro started to play. Ah, the joys of live radio. Carly Comando and Tom Patterson got married this week and I wanted to play that song in honor of the occasion. The best of luck to you!!! Anahronist have an album coming out soon. Great song from their last EP. The Joe show at Nectar’s last Saturday was great. He played the full album including a wonderful version of Pun. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got home from my local music radio show on WBKM.ORG. I played a few new songs, including a song that is quickly becoming a favorite, and some classics. I played some future classics too.

Song before: Never Trust A Stranger – Michael Schenker Group / Temple Of Rock

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. On Tuesday, I went to Signal Kitchen to see The Mountain Says No, and ended up loving the other two bands, too. This is the band who played in the middle and is the song they closed with. This is Above My Ground by Landlady on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind of Music.

1.) Above My Ground – Landlady
2.) Young Vultures – Saint Rich
3.) Statistic – The Mountain Says No

I love that song and can’t wait for a full sounding version of it. They were great at Signal Kitchen and will be at The Monkey House tomorrow. Vultures is the first song that caught me on the St Rich album. I loved their show. It’s summer in Vermont and twilight at quarter after 9. It’s warm and time to head to the beach.

4.) Beach Song – Mr. Ray Fork
5.) Super Sexy Science Party – Wave of the Future
6.) Window’s Down – Lendway
7.) Wiser – And The Kids

I finally bought the ATK ep and Wiser jumped out. On the way down I listened to a bit of a song from a band at Red Square, I think, called 6:19. It looked like Jeremy Gartner from Wave with Matthew Bryan Hagen and Kevin Lynam from Lendway, plus keyboard, and violin. It sounded a bit like if Lendway played a Small Town Movie bluesy The Cush sort of song. Lendway are so cool, and Wave so bouncy and fun. Beach features Raph Worrick and Jane Boxall. Up next, it’s time to finish off Dancing With The Big Guy. This is a rocker!

8.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian
9.) Scorned Woman – The Dirty Blondes
10.) Decide – David L. Jarvis

Great rocker from Dave. The Blondes always rock! What a great way to end the album, with the Ninja chant. I think Phil Yates and the Affiliates are playing at the Monkey House tomorrow

11.) Honeycomb – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
12.) Jan Michael Vincent – Chin Ho!
13.) The Globe – Landlady

That song caught me when I saw them and I like it more and more every time I hear it. That was a classic from Chin Ho! I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from local music radio show number 50 on internet only WBKM.ORG. It is the one year anniversary of the show. I let the past dance with the future.

Song before: Kings – The Church Band

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I had a great time at the video shoot for ROUGH FRANCIS last Saturday. I have so much respect for band, cast and especially the crew. Here is the next song on Maximum Soul Power. This is Home Invasion by Rough Francis on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Home Invasion – Rough Francis (I accidentally double clicked something late in the song and it tossed the next song in. At least it cut on the line Don’t Cut Me Off….)

2.) Terrarium – Vedora
3.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons
4.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian

Ninja played many legendary shows in this town. Fire the cannons used to rock it hard themselves. Vedora are writing new songs and playing at The Monkey House on Saturday. Sorry about cutting the Rough Francis song. At least you know it’s live. This next band used to play all over town and will be playing South by Southwest soon.

5.) Roll Me – The Cush
6.) Starboard – Elephants of Scotland

Elephants played a great show at Nectar’s on Monday. They will have a new album out soon. I just got an e-mail saying the Cush are mastering their next album now. This next band will have a new album out soon.

7.) If You Get Lost – Swale
8.) Sunflower Street – David L. Jarvis
9.) These Summer Nights – Sarah Emily Blacker

Sarah is writing new songs and hopefully will make the trip up from Boston to see us in the near future. Dave is out of the Army and in the North Country. Hopefully, I will catch up with him soon. Swale are playing the Monkey House Saturday too. This next band is from Rutland.

10.) No Reservations – Split Tongue Crow
11.) Hollywood – Lendway
12.) Extended Werewolf – farm

Great song by Farm. Lendway are working mostly on side projects, but hey, you never know when they will write and record more of their sweet songs. Same with Split Tongue Crow. It was fun looking back a year to see what’s relevant and what’s history. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music internet radio show, number 35, on WBKM.ORG. It was Halloween, so I decided to have some fun. I came up with the idea a while ago, but wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. I think I did. I thought, what if I was hanging out with a traveler between worlds, and I got caught in a spirit world. I thought he would do the show and open a door back for me.

Song before: Please Mr. Gravedigger – David Bowie

into

Good Evening. It is I, Mister E Ghoul, here to play some songs for you, on Halloween. Unfortunately, the one you quaintly know as Tim, cannot be here this evening. Earlier, we were chatting with the spirits, and they lured him over, to the other side. But the spirits, are like your mortals, and subject to fear. Maybe we can scare them into, sending Tim back to you. Let’s begin, with a band, quaintly called farm, and their tale of the Devil on WBKM. Boo!lington’s kind of music.

1.) Devil – Farm
2.) Our Lady Of The Underground – Anais Mitchell
3.) Graveyard Before Dark – Alice Austin
4.) Vampyre – David L. Jarvis

Again, it is I, Mister E Ghoul. Poor Tim, has yet to return. Surely the lure of his friend Dave Jarvis, and the fright of the dreaded vampyre, should have worked. But No. They seem unmoved by Alice Austin’s tale of the Graveyard Before Dark, and of Anais Mitchell’s Our Lady Of The Underground. ‘Tis no matter. I shall continue on. Perhaps Tim’s friends in Cold Sweat, and their tale of Monsters, will sever the spirits hold. If not, some chaotic music of Burlington shall emanate, from what you quaintly call, WBKM, and the borders between the worlds shall break down.

5.) Monsters – Cold Sweat
6.) Hedgehogs – The Toes
7.) Death – Cccome?
8.) Theme Song – Shark Victim

It is I, again, and Tim is still locked from this earthly realm. The borders are beginning to shimmer, as some spirits remember passing on, as victims of sharks. Tim’s friends Michael Clifford and J Boom Mateik have done well, but not well enough. Tim has the deepest respect for Lee Anderson, and his earthly incarnation, Radio Bean. His band Cccome? and their song Death, could have brought him back, but the spirtis have a stronger hold him than I thought, or he has a stronger hold on them. I thought for sure the lure of the quirky band called The Toes, and their tale of Heghogs, would compel Tim to return, to what you quaintly call a dance floor. But no matter. It’s time to get serious. How many spirits can we catch in Vedora’s Dragnet, that was released from WBKM?

9.) Dragnet – Vedora
10.) When The Lord Comes – The Vacant Lots
11.) Knight Ov Swords – The Contrarian

Again it is I, Mister E Ghoul. The Contrarian’s tale of the Tarot and the Knight Ov Swords, has visibly, or invisibly, to most of you, shaken the spirits, and yet their grip remains. The Vacant Lots story, of When The Lord Comes, has started to open a door, but will Tim come back through? It’s time for the ultimate lure, not that it really matters, mind you, for Tim is perfectly safe. While he is still lost, there is no danger. But there comes a time, when you must dwell in your world, and I must dwell in mine. The power of Tim’s friend Sean Altrui, and the lure of his love for Swale, should be enough to bring him back.

12.) If You Get Lost – Swale
13.) Sirens – Sean Altrui

(Sirens is a drum only song that gets more and more intense. As it was playing, I kicked on the microphone, which lowered the song volume, and with speakers on in the room, which produced a freaky echo, as Ghoul, chanted the following:

On this night of Hallow’s eve
When crossing plains you can achieve
Know the realm that thall shalt dwell
Release to theirs break this spell
Send Tim home without delay
To Burlington straghtaway

I went through it twice, then kicked the drums back to full sound. They rocked hard for two minutes, then I mixed it directly into the Sinatra outro)

Hey guys, Tim here. What’s happening? Oh no, it’s 10 and my show is already over. I got it all set, then was waiting for E, I, um, er, must have dozed off on the couch. I’m so sorry about that. Hmm, the list of songs that just played are my set list, did E play it for you? I’m so embarrassed, I don’t know what to do. I guess all I can do is play my next song. This is Fish’s most Halloween song.

Song After: Shadowplay – Fish

I just got back from internet radio show number 34 on WBKM.ORG. I’m assuming you all turned down the sound on the world series to listen in. If not, the archived copy of the show will be available sometime. I played a set of shimmering songs and opened with an Orion, and the coming of winter, theme. The tagline for Stylus is: I don’t mind the cold, Orion…..

Song before: Orion – Jethro Tull

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It’s been a chilly day, and it’s a cold night here in the Champlain Valley. Winter is coming and it’s the time of Orion to light the sky. This is a song called Stylus of Id by a band called Somah on WBKM, and they are Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Stylus Of Id – Somah
2.) All My Life – Wide Wail
3.) The Possibility Shop – The Red Telephone

Sean Toohey and Matt Hutton are such great songwriters and performers and have played lots of great music in Burlington. With a line like, you can stop at the costume shop, I though it was an appropriate song to play, since Halloween is next week. Definitely tune in, I have a cool show lined up for Halloween, which is next Thursday. I’ve got some great dark local music, and I think, a special guest. Wide Wail were stunning at times and rocked this town hard. Somah have lots of great songs, and this one always reminds me of this time of year. Next up is, essentially, the tile song of Alice Austin‘s To A Star In The Yard. It’s the second song on the album and I will work my way through the full disc, over the next several weeks.

4.) Shoots Like You – Alice Austin
5.) Not True – Peg Tassey
6.) Sunflower Street – David L. Jarvis
7.) Kick The can – Cave Bees

The Bees came back from Texas for the summer, but haven’t played too much. Hopefully they will play a show or two before they go back. Dave is in Texas, and when he comes back to New York, I hope he writes more great songs like Sunflower. Peg can be regal and majestic, but at times she can just rock. This is one of those times. Alice rocks too and was such a huge part of the Burlington music scene for so many years. Next up, let’s play some blues, St Albans style.

8.) St. Albans Blues – farm
9.) The River Hymn – The Sweet Remains
10.) Matilda Bridge – The Cush
11.) Breathing In – The Hero Cycle

I love the huge swell in Breathing. Matilda is so shimmering and cool and sounded great coming out of River. Hmmm Farm. OK, it’s almost time to go. I should grab another drink.

12.) One More Drink – Will
13.) Unstopable – Lendway
14.) Come to Space – ROUGH FRANCIS

I loved the way the chaos at the end of the Lendway song mixed into the chaos of the Space beginning. Great Rock from Francis. Great harmonies from Lendway. Great song by Will. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Take A Chance With Me – Roxy Music

Intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. It’s a beautiful summer day and I’m going to play some songs I love.

1.) Summertime – Peg Tassey and the Velvet Ovum Band

2.) Papertrain – David L. Jarvis Band

3.) Until the Day I Die – Slingshot Dakota

4.) Hawk Space B.1.0.0.Z – The Fatal Flaws

Listening to the Flaws makes me think of how happy Sasha always looked playing drums. That was an homage to Hawkwind, and I just got tickets to see the old English space rockers in Montreal in October. I love the driving positive lyric of Until. Dave can write pop songs with ease and precision. I got to see Peg at the Precipice and I hope all those rock bands Friday night inspired her. Next is another song I love, and the next song from Swale’s A Small Arrival.

5.) If You Get Lost – Swale

6.) Presence – Satori Bob

7.) You’re Safe With Us – Lendway

I always feel safe when Lendway are playing. They are so good and their songs are wonderful. I love the driving guitar in Presence and the lyric about comparing what people want to hear and what truths a poet can find. I love the way Swale can take something sad, like being lost, and give hope with beauty.

Well, if it’s songs that I love, you know some of them are going to rock. Doll Fight! is playing one last time, and I love this song.

8.) Morning Again – Doll Fight!

9.) Lunacy – Cave Bees

10.) Burn – The Dirty Blondes

11.) It’s Real Again – Zola Turn

I love a lot of Zola songs, but that one always gets me going. Don’t mess with the Blondes. If you do, they will hunt you down, and they are in shape. I love a lot of Bees songs, but that one just a bit more. I’m going to miss Doll Fight! This next song is one of my absolute favorites.

12.) A New Kind Of Blue – The Cush

13.) Trading Bullets – Fire The Cannons

14.) One More Grave – The Contratian

The guitar in that song makes my heart soar. The eponymous Cannons song always rocks me hard. I love Blue. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
