Song before: Kings – The Church Band

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve been listening to the new Phil Yates album a lot and love it. Let’s start tonight with the last song on the album.

1.) Bite Your Tongue – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
2.) Redemption On Pearl – Milton Busker
3.) Done Waiting – The New Siberians
4.) A Cut In The Night Sky – Matt the Gnat and the Gators

I went out to see the Gators last night at Nectar’s. They played a great version of that song and lots of other dark tunes. Another great song from the Siberians album Black, Blue & White album, which I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. Milton played a great version of Pearl at Light Club Lamp Shop on Monday. Great new song from Phil about patriotism. These next two artists will be at ArtsRiot next Wednesday for a live recording for Big Heavy World.

5.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
6.) Forsythia – Cricket Blue
7.) Drink Myself Blind – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
8.) A Bottle Of Whiskey Later – Crazyhearse

Another great song from Phil’s upcoming album Party Music. I just had to play it into the Crazy song. It should be a great show next Wednesday. This next band will be at Radio Bean tomorrow.

9.) Shadow Puppets – The Mountain Carol
10.) The Marble Rye – Sad Turtle
11.) Right Bright Lord – The Mountain Says No
12.) Drug Laws – SWALE

13.) Spy-Fi – Barbacoa
14.) The Spy Song – Pinhead

16.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz

I hope you enjoyed the fun theme in the last set. Three of those songs are very old. So is this one.

17.) Spiral – Strung Out
18.) Who’s Fault Was That? – The Snaz
19.) Mountain High – gneiss
20.) Hurricane Jane – Hayley Jane and the Primates

If you ever get to see the Primates play, go! Great songs from gneiss and Snaz. I love that Strung Out song. I’m so I happy I have an album by this next band.

21.) Fantasma – Mal Maïz
22.) She Moves In Passages – Late Night Sneaky Uncle
23.) Magic In This Mystery – Robin Gottfried Band
24.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass

Great songs from Gregory and Robin. I stacked them together because they mix so nicely. Anne-Marie has such a lovely voice and Uncle are a pretty great band. Great song from Maiz. OK, let’s play another classic.

25.) October Days Club – The Cancer Conspiracy
26.) Random Earth – Elephants of Scotland

Great songs from Elephants and Conspiracy. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a drizzly rainy night in Burlington and oddly warm for this late in November. Tonight I want to start with the second band I ever saw live. They opened for the Ramones at the Flynn Theater. My friend Christopher Larrow just got a turntable that can rip mp3’s so now I have a copy of this album to play. This is one of those songs that just randomly pops into my head now and then. I hope you enjoy!

1.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
2.) You Don’t Like Me, Do Ya? – Pinhead
3.) Wally Rides The Ferry – Zoot Wilson
4.) Every Time I Hear That Mellow Saxophone – Big Joe Burrell & The Unknown Blues Band

Big Joe passed away a few years back, and has a wonderful statue on Church st, but the band are around and playing tonight at Nectar’s to help celebrate the clubs 40th birthday. A lot of great music has been played in that room. OK, it’s time to play the last song on No Need To Beg. I hope you have enjoyed listening to all of those songs as much as I have.

5.) Insomnia – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
6.) I Feel So Dumb – The Decentz
7.) Medula Momblongata – Strung Out
8.) Say It – Anachronist

Great song from the Central Vermont band. Everyone loved to go see Emily play whenever Strung Out performed. Another classic from Decentz. Another great song from Phil Yates. I will be off next week, since it’s Thanksgiving, but the week after I will have to find a new album to play all the way through. This next set should be fun. It’s about girls clubs and boys clubs and motorcycles.

9.) Bad Girls Club – Colin Nicholas Clary
10.) Boys Club – Peg Tassey MUSIC
11.) She’s A Motorcycle – Colin Clary
12.) Faineant – Swale

I love that song about wishing he was a motorcycle and could go where he wants. Well sung Eric Olsen. Motorcycle and Girls Club are from Twee Blues, the album Colin just sent me. Thanks! There are some fun songs on that album. Boys Club is a classic from Peg about the anger that comes from being excluded because of race or sex or whatever. When you think about it the best way to fight terrorism is not with guns and bombs but to make everyone included and feel valued and have a hope of a decent life. It’s really not that hard to figure out. This next song is something that I have had for months on vinyl but have not been able to play for you, since we play all music files at the station. Thanks for ripping the MP3 for this one Chris!!!

13.) Bling Pigs – ROUGH FRANCIS
14.) Heavy Psych – The Cush
15.) Cowgirl In The Sand – The Seth Yacovone Band

Seth and the band played a killer show last week at Nectar’s to help WBKM celebrate its birthday. Joe Moore started the night on solo sax and tossed in a nice cover of Heart Of Gold. Seth played a solo set of Neil Young songs. He began with After The Gold Rush and closed with My My Hey Hey. The full band came on after and opened with Hey Hey My My and played tons of classics, including a killer version of Cowgirl. I was just thinking of the show The Cush played last year at Arts Riot, where they sold me their killer new album. That is the lead off song. Great song from Francis!!! OK, let’s keep rocking.

16.) The Day I Met You – Dirtminers
17.) So They Say – The New Siberians
18.) Who’s Fault Was That – The Snaz
19.) Compared To You – The Decentz

I love mixing something so old like Compared with something so new like Fault. I thought they sounded quite nice together. I’m still impatiently waiting for the next Siberians album. Great song that likely will be on that album. Killer song from Dirtminers. It’s been drizzly and rainy all night and feels a little bit like this.

20.) In The Rain – Plan B
21.) Left One In The Rain – Alice Austin
22.) We Shall Overcome – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and 30 VT Musicians

I’m so glad there is one candidate for President talking about the need to create a world where people don’t want to be terrorists, rather than dealing with the repercussions afterwards. Bernie has been doing it for decades. Plan and Alice Austin sure sum up the mood of the evening. Since I have a bit of an international commentary going, I thought this would be fun to play.

23.) Attempt No Landing Aria – Mailbox
24.) Micronesia – Mailbox
25.) TFAY – Elephants of Scotland

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s not do it next week but rather spend Thanksgiving with our families and not shopping. Let’s do it the week after that, and the week after that…

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only WBKM.org. I started out with a couple of local highlights from the Neil Young show, then played some great local music.

Song before: Hymnalayas – Gong

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It’s been a beautiful day in Burlington and lots of people are out and about tonight. It was also a beautiful night last Sunday when Neil Young and The Promise Of The Real came to Essex. He came to Vermont to support our GMO labeling law, which is the subject of his new album The Monsanto Years. This is one of the songs from the album that heavily mentions Vermont and the importance of knowing what we are eating, This is A Rock Star Bucks A Coffee Shop by Neil Young on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) A Rock Star Bucks A Coffee Shop – Neil Young
2.) Moonlight In Vermont – Willie Nelson
3.) Threaded – Jeremy Gilchrist
4.) Dead Summer – Thompson Gunner

It’s summer in Burlington and that was a band from Rutland and that was recorded at Nectar’s. Great new song from Jeremy. At the Neil Young show, Lucas and Micah Nelson were part of the Promise Of The Real. They are the sons of Willie and Lucas sang a great version of Moonlight In Vermont last Sunday in Essex. Oh, yea, it’s summer. Let’s head to the beach.

5.) Beach Song – Mr. Ray Fork
6.) I Wanna Be A Lifeguard – Blotto
7.) Theme Song – Shark Victim
8.) Rising Suns – Mammal Dap
9.) Rise – Barika

Such a nice cool breezy song. If you like that song, head to Radio Bean tomorrow. Mammal just played Summervale earlier this evening. When you go to the beach, obey the lifeguard and watch out for sharks, especially when surfing. So, on Saturday there is a celebration of the Old North End of Burlington. People get together and walk around the ONE and check out art and music and food and what businesses are doing and all sorts of fun things. It’s called The Ramble and this next set of music is dedicated to Burlington’s Old North End.

10.) Old North Ender – James Kochalka
11.) The North – Hana Zara
12.) North Street – Death World Wide

Killer rocker from Death. I love the imagery of the north end in Hana’s song. Loud and Proud nicely describes the ONE, thanks James. OK, it’s time for the next song on JV, the killer new album from The Mountain Says No.

13.) JC And The Beast – The Mountain Says No
14.) Getting High – Heavy Plains
15.) Lean In – When Particles Collide
16.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons

I still remember that time when there were not a lot of cool rock bands around for a few months and then came Cannons. Oh, how they rocked so many great shows. Killer song from Particles who are touring all over the US and just played Toronto too. I’m still in awe of Plains from that Nectar’s show. Hmm, Signs And Wonders. Hmmm Mountain. When I put tonight’s show together the beginning just flowed then I hit a wall after Nowhere. I just wasn’t sure where to go next, for a moment.

17.) Where Do We Go? – Black Rabbit
18.) Always Monica – Chin Ho
19.) The Day I Met You – Dirtminers
20.) Mirror Mirror – Joe Adler

Killer song from Joe’s album. He’s done so much for the local music scene, especially writing and playing songs like that. Nice rocker form Raph Worrick and the gang. Classic VT song from Chin. Yet another great song from Rabbit’s new album Red Flannel Hash. Recently, there was a band who played a bunch of shows then just stopped. I’m missing them and feeling a little lacking, like maybe i need to take some vitamins or something.

21.) Vitamin Dee – Persian Claws
22.) Medula Mamblongata – Strung Out
23.) Scattered Birds – Aaron Flinn
24.) The Feeling – Vedora

Killer new song from the second Vedora album. If you liked the whistling on Birds, go check out Aaron next Wednesday at Red Square. Killer song form the classic VT band. I feel a bit better after that shot of Vitamin Dee, I hope you do too. I saw this next band twice last Thursday. They played Summervale, I left then did the show and walked into Light Club Lamp Shop just as they were about to go on. Both shows were great but the later one was out of this world. Here’s a couple of their songs.

25.) Honor Of The Rainbows part 1 & 2 – Arc Iris
26.) Somewhere Far – The Red Telephone
27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. I might be off next week seeing the Decemberists but we can to it the week after that, and the week after that…..

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I thought of a fun idea and pulled it off pretty well.

Song before: The Old And The Young – MIDLAKE BAND

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a cool and snowy night in Burlington. We got 11 inches Wednesday but the roads and sidewalks are pretty passable. Thanks DPW! Tonight I’m going to alternate new and old songs to highlight the great talent in this town. Let’s start with a couple of songs from the soundtrack to some cool underwater Vermont videos. This is Maidstone by I See Fish People on WBKM and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Maidstone – I See Fish People
2.) Burette’s Green River – I See Fish People
3.) Deal – Bud & Budd ~ The Kind Buds

Great guitar playing on the Dead cover. Lots of people in Vermont still love the Dead and The Buds played a killer version of that. Nice build in the middle! The Fish people CD just came out this week, and is as new as it gets. OK, let’s play another new song. Doug McAllister was in Ninja Custodian a long time ago and is now in California with a new band called Super Music Band.

4.) Not Everything Is About You – Super Music Band
5.) Monkey Business – Ninja Custodian
6.) Under Bright Stars – Alice Austin
7.) Seeds And Stems – The New Siberians

It really has been a while since the Siberians album came out. They should have something new soon, and I think Ryan Power is working on it. Great new song from Alice. That’s Doug singing the classic Ninja song. It was cool to hang out with Ted Pappadopoulos from the Siberians at Manhattan Pizza and Pub last Friday at the Black Rabbit show. Here is the last song on their EP Lipstick And Dynamite that I’m playing all the way through.

8.) Carnage – Black Rabbit
9.) Kick The Can – Cave Bees
10.) Time To Save The World – Carraway
11.) Medula Mamblongatta – Strung Out

I remember seeing them at the Chicken Bone Cafe. That was a while ago. Carraway just put out an excellent new EP. Classic from the Bees who have been in an out of the scene for a long time. Man those Rabbit shows with Jane Boxall Percussion on drums are getting really intense. Here’s a song that came out last year.

12.) Mirrors – Vetica
13.) No More Sex – Pinhead
14.) In Comes The Tide – PossumHaw

Great song from the Waiting and Watching album from earlier this year. Classic song from Pinhead. OK, let’s head back to the ’90’s for a great piece of music.

15.) Poem For Torin/Ethan’s Stoned – Peg Tassey MUSIC
16.) Eliza – Alpenglow
17.) Let It Shine – Rachel Brown

Rachel used to unleash her beautiful and powerful voice on us back in the ’90’s. Great new song from Alpenglow’s Chapel EP. Here’s another new song that I just love.

18.) 40 Days – Better Things
19.) Politicians In My Eyes – Death World Wide
20.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS

Francis just re-released the Maximum Soul Power Album this year on Riot House Records. Death was their fathers band, then Dannis and Bobby were in Lambsbread playing reggae when I got into the music scene. They rocked a bit harder before that. Up next is another classic rocker from the ’90’s.

21.) Decide – David L. Jarvis
22.) Before The Night – Swale
23.) Let Up – Construction Joe

It’s been a while since I thought of Joe and that is a great song. I love that Swale song! I want to dedicate this next song to the magnificent Joe Adler who just lost his father. Somehow I just know he’s up there looking down at Joe with lots of love.

24.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
25.) Extended Werewolf – farm

There’s only so much time indeed. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we.

Hey guys, Tim here for one more song. It’s a Fish song as always. He’s just played some killer shows and has some sold out ones coming up. Here’s the first song on the new album, A Feast Of Consequences. This is Perfume River by Fish, and even though he’s from Scotland, this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music on WBKM.

I just got home from my 48th local music radio show on internet only WBKM.ORG. I though it was a nice showcase of Burlington in the moment and in the glorious past.

Song before: Red Barchetta – RUSH

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a beautiful winter night in Burlington. It snowed all day yesterday but the crews have it in giant piles on Church Street, so it’s easy walking. Tonight let’s start with a band who are about to start a small tour. This is a song called Solitude by a band called Alpenglow on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Solitude – Alpenglow
2.) Spiral – Strung Out
3.) Thinner Than Water – Somah

The best part of this gig is pulling out old albums and finding gems like the Somah song, and remembering how much fun it was whenever Strung Out played Spiral. Thanks to Mike Luoma, on Monday I went to a new music venue, Arts Riot, that is in a building I worked in a long time ago. I met one of Burlington’s great artists while working there. Here is a song by the band that played Monday night, and we’ll talk about the rest on the other side.

4.) Song For Zula – Phosphorescent
5.) Check The Gravity – Wide Wail
6.) Cancer – Swale

When I worked at the Cheese Outlet, there was a sublet bakery and we sometimes used their equipment and chatted. I used to chat with Amanda Gustafson and when she told me she was joining a band, I had to go check out Wide Wail, again and again and again. They went away, so now I see her in Swale as often as I can. Next up is the next song on Maximum Soul Power.

7.) Staring Out My Window – ROUGH FRANCIS
8.) Hit – Blue Button
9.) I’m With You – Ninja Custodian

I love Ninja’s take on that song. BB are playing a show Valentines day at The Monkey House. There’s lots of other music that day, but I think I have to go that way. All I’ve got lined up this week is seeing Rush cover band Lotus Land at Higher Ground with my brother. Rough Francis always rock! I missed them last Saturday, when I went to Phoenix bookstore to listen to authors reading original sci-fi, including Luoma, who was the only one to read with each character’s voice. I then went to Club Metronome for Rock Lotto. Four bands hooked up at 10am and wrote songs and performed them at 6pm. Raph Worrick did a great job with his band.

10.) Hasta Manana Monsieur – Ray Fork
11.) If The Sea Won’t Rise – Sean Altrui

That’s just a great song from Sean. Well, hasta manana. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got home from radio show number 4 on WBKM. It was a little rough, but I got to play a bunch of cool music.

Song Before: Rockaway Beach – The Ramones

Intro:

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. I talked about Wide Wail opening for Juliana Hatfield in 2000

1.) All My Life – Wide Wail

2.) 10 Speed Car – Torpedo Rodeo

3.) Sharp Side of the Knife – Alice Austin

4.) Jan Michael Vincent – Chin Ho!

Talked about how catchy a riff there is in the Chin Ho! song (and had it in my head for the walk home), talked about how great Alice is when she growls out Sharp Side. I talked about seeing Torpedo at JP’s and Manhattan Pizza and talked about how Max Krauss sometimes has bands at parties in his basement. I talked a bit more about Wide Wail, then talked about Emily and how good a violin player she is.

5.) Medula Mamblongata – Strung Out

6.) Maria – Vedora

7.) Yayo – The Dirty Blondes

Talked about how the Blondes song mentions Maple st, Elm st, Pitkin st, Church st and how very Burlington it is. I talked about seeing Everybody’s Favorite Irish Drinking Songs Band on Saturday and Sunday. I talked about how Maria sounded like it would go great out of the Strung Out song, and that they are playing at 10, next Thursday at Nectar’s. I talked about seeing Strung Out at the Chickenbone, and several other places. I talked about how music exists in the moment they is gone, but recordings can be played forever. I talked about David L. Jarviswriting great songs in town then joining the Army, then being in El Paso and starting a psychedelic rock band.

8.) Paper Train – D. Jarvis Band (it played for a few seconds, then I hit something wrong and the next song started playing. Sorry Dave!! Sorry everyone else too!)

8.) Grounded – Invisible Jet

9.) Paper Train – D. Jarvis Band (in it’s entirety!!)

10.) Lights of Montreal – Lobot

Talked about how good Lobot were and that they play a reunion show every year. Talked about Chris Farnsworth playing guitar with Lobot and Dino Bravo. I apologized for cutting Paper Train, then talked about how cool it would be to walk into a club and hear something that sounds like Peter Gabriel, but it turns out to be a local band called Invisible Jet. I talked about the wonderful melody of Paper Train. I talked about playing one of my favorite Farm Songs

11.) Bad Oasis – Farm

12.) Time to Get Out – Aaron Flinn and Salad Days

Talked about how it was time to get out, and that Aaron would be playing on the 30th in Hinesburg. Talked about if Farm played Bad Oais at a festival, Robbie Williams would probably toss the I’ve got soul in the worst of places line into one of his medleys.

Outro

Song after: Gloria (live from Red Rocks) – U2
