Song before: What The Snowman Learned About Love – Stars

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Valentine’s Day was Tuesday so let’s begin tonight with a super talented artist who just released this new song.

1.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
2.) Filling In The Blanks – Kelly Ravin
3.) Sleep – Lowell Thompson and Crown Pilot
4.) Your Eyes – Forest Gray

I loved seeing Forest the one time I saw him and really want to see him again. Lowell and Kelly are super-talented. I love that new song from Francesca. OK, it’s time to debut a new feature that I hope to bring to the show on a regular basis. Let’s head on over to Robot Dog Studio. Ryan Cohen has agreed to record this interview and song.

5.) Able To Breathe – Peter Burton
6.) So Subliminal – Peter Burton
7.) Let Me Be – Peter Burton

Hopefully, in the near future we will do more interviews and have bands play live at Robot Dog and broadcast them on this show. OK, let’s play the next song on By My Side.

8.) Come Dance – Kat Wright Official
9.) Tell Me – Linda Bassick
10.) 15 Steps – Maryse Smith
11.) Shepherd – Anais Mitchell

I dug deeper into the Young Man In America album and really liked that song. Great song from Maryse who used to play all over town. Linda is so talented and does such a great job promoting Girls Rock Vermont. Great song from Kat and the band. Last week I played a song from this band and wanted to go deeper into the album this week.

12.) Ocean’s Hourglass – Secret Heliotropes
13.) Hopin’ That I’m Wrong – Will
14.) Powder – The New Siberians
15.) Goin’ Home – Eames Brothers Band

I love the bluesy sound of the Eames brothers. I’ve been playing a lot of new Siberians but that old song is pretty great too. I love that song from Will, who played around town in the 2000’s. Great song from Secret. This next band are playing tomorrow at the newly employed Switchback Brewing Company.

16.) I’m Thrilled – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
17.) This Melody – Sarah Blacker & New England Groove Association
18.) Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft – Rue M.
19.) Golden Crutch – SWALE

Swale are playing on Saturday at a new coffee shop on Maple st called Maglianero so it will be fun to check out a new venue. Rue will play the Winter is a Drag ball that takes over Higher Ground this Saturday. Thanks for sponsoring us HG. Sarah and her band will rock the Rusty Nail in Stowe on Saturday and she always puts on a fun show. Phil and the band always put on a fun show too. This next band are playing at the show with Swale.

20.) Sharktopus – Villanelles
21.) Detective Norman – Sad Turtle
22.) Above The Frequency – Invisible Homes
23.) Nothing In This – The Mountain Says No

Mountain will release their new album Golden Landfill at ArtsRiot tomorrow night. They just released a cool video of that song. The other three bands will play too, so it’s going to be a great show. So, you don’t need to be a musician and you don’t need to be a recording engineer like Ryan Cohen. You do need to find what works for you and let your passion drive you to accomplish what you want. In that way, we should all be like Ryan.

24.) Be Like Ryan – The Mountain Says No
25.) Slipstream – Black Ox
26.) Kaleidoscope – Arc Iris
27.) The Road – Anders Parker

Great rocker from Anders. Arc haven’t played town for a while but I’m sure they will be back soon. It was great seeing Cam Barrows last week so I wanted to play another song from his new band. Mountain have such a great new album coming out tomorrow. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from local radio show 32 on internet only WBKM.ORG.  I thought it went pretty well, and had some cool songs.

Song Before: Tantalized – The Church Band

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington.  Last Sunday I went to Higher Ground and saw a great band from Montreal called Stars.  Local band Paper Castles opened the show with some wonderfully complex songs.  This is a song called Open Country by Paddy Regan and Paper Castles on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Open Country – Paper Castles
2.) Your Ex-Lover is Dead – Stars
3.) Boxing The Cold – Jer Coons

Stars were so good last Sunday, and the entire audience sang every word of Ex-Lover.  Paper Castles were just great.  The Jer song reminds me that winter is coming.  It’s classic fall in Vermont, with turning leaves, hints of cold and apples and cider.

4.) Green Apple Girl – David L. Jarvis Band
5.) Northern Skies – The Lindbergh Baby
6.) Science Fiction – Hana Zara

Another song full of visceral imagery from Hana.  Northern has such a cool feel and feels like it’s time to transition soon.  Another great song by Dave.  Next up is the last song on Swale’s A Small Arrival.  I hope you’ve enjoyed the journey through the album in the last several weeks.  At times they rock hard and at times they are so gentle, but they are always impressive.

7.) Faineant – Swale
8.) My Atom Girl – The Dirtminers
9.) Hungry Like The Wolf – Rangers of Danger.

Joe Adler and the Rangers were joined by a couple of the guys from the Lynguistic Civilians at the end of the classic cover song.  Raph Worrick was fun as frontman for the Dirtminers.  What a great song about nuclear weapons.  Hmmm, Swale.  Next up, let’s go classic Burlington.

10.) Jan Michael Vincent – Chin Ho!
11.) Purpose and Object – The Contrarian

Casey Hades Rae might be based in Washington, but that is Burlington’s kind of music.  Next Monday I’m heading to Signal Kitchen to see Swale, and someone else.  I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town.  Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my Internet Radio Show on WBKM. Tonight I put more of the focus on the bands who have stopped by Burlington to make the scene so fantastic.

Song before: Heroes – David Bowie (live – Stages)

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. Last Saturday I saw two of the guys from Waylon Speed at the Monkey House. Here’s Waylon Speed, and they are Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) The Minor Blues – Waylon Speed

2.) The Bet – The Sideshow Tragedy

3.) Many Things and Many Scenes – Rangers of Danger

Talked about Joe, and Precipice tickets on sale now. Talked about taking a chance and seeing the guys from Waylon and being blown away by Sideshow. Took a chance and saw a great band. A lot of great bands come to town, and tonight we will spotlight a few. Next up is song three from the Cush. This is the one they had when they came to town.

4.) Small Town Movie – The Cush

5.) New Orleans is Sinking (Live w/ Nautical Disaster in the middle section) The Tragically Hip

Talked about how often the Hip come to town, and said my brother Ken went with me the last time they played, in Shelburne, and dedicated it to him. Said I would be running a few minutes late. Said Metronome mixes it up between live shows and DJ nights. Talked about a time in early 2000’s when they put on a live music focus and I got to see the next three a couple of times

6.) There’s A Fire – Longwave

7.) In The Walls – Stellastar

8.) What The Snowman Learned About Love – Stars

Talked about taking a chance and seeing lots of great music. Caroline O’Connor clued me in to this next band

9.) Brallor – Dungen

10.) Wave – Slingshot Dakota

11.) Shoulda Been Me – When Particles Collide

12.) Twee Valley High – The Smittens

Brought it back to Burlington, with the Smittens. Talked about Sasha Alcott and When Particles Collide stopping by Burlington semi-often, talked about Carly Comando and Tom Patterson making massive music and that with all the rain lately, Wave was appropriate.

Light it up   Leave a comment

Light it up

Find some warmth in life

And light it up

Set yourself on fire

Light your fire and light mine

Burn baby, baby we’re ready to burn

You’ve only got one life

Take what you learn from the legends

Apply it to you

And ignite

Burn

Don’t hurt and burn out

Burn

Burn forward

Burn hot and bright

Find everything within you

And let it light up the night
