Song before Shine – Stoneman Douglas Drama Club

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Please join me on a ride through some deep cuts from Burlington’s past to music that was released this week. Let’s start a decade ago with an amazing song.

1.) Bad Oasis – farm
2.) Cancer – SWALE
3.) On Backstreets – Eastern Mountain Time
4.) Small Town Movie – The Cush

Movie is one of those songs that everyone always loves when they play live. Cool new song from Eastern who are at Zenbarn tonight. Cancer is from Swale’s first EP Verdigris. I want to send that out to everyone who is dealing with cancer, whether it’s you, your family or a loved one. Keep up the fight and make sure you have lots of friends to help. I love that Farm song. OK, here is the next song on Black, Blue & White.

5.) Bird On The Sea – The New Siberians
6.) Judgment Day – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
7.) Honest Will – The Parts
8.) Cemetery Walks – Ryan Ober and The Romans

Great new song from his Caveman Blues album. It was great to chat with Ryan last Monday at the Maryse Smith show. Cool new song from Danny LeFrancois and the band. I’ve played Judgment before but this is the brand new final mix from the upcoming Book Of Zoo album. Such a fantastic song from the Siberians. So, I made it out to the three Monday residency shows that Maryse has done at Light Club Lamp Shop this month. There is another opportunity next Monday. She’s played a lot of cool songs but maybe not this one.

9.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith
10.) Luminous – Michael Chorney and Hollar General
11.) Kids – Wren Kitz
12.) Magic In This Mystery – Robin Gottfried Band

I love thinking about the magic and mystery in and around life. Robin and the band are playing Saturday at On Tap Bar and Grill. Wren will be at Autumn Records on Saturday. I chose Kids to honor all of the kids standing up to their schools and governments and TV personalities to try and stop the gun violence. Have it kids!! Michael joined Maryse last Monday and it was so wonderful to hear their guitars weave together, while Francesca Blanchard weaved her voice with Maryse’s. Next week should be pretty magical too. This next band are playing tonight at Red Square.

13.) Three Feels Right – gneiss
14.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
15.) The Mists – Aram Bedrosian
16.) Crimescene – Dino Bravo VT

That’s a cool newer song from Dino that was recorded at our Robot Dog Studio session last year. Great work as always from Aram. Francesca is playing Sunday at Higher Ground. Great song from Gneiss from a Robot Dog session last year too. This next singer moved away but comes back now and then.

17.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass
18.) Your Downtown Aperture – Video Pigeon
19.) Bob Marley And The Hartford Whalers – The Zambonis
20.) Green Apple Girl – Cranial Perch

Perch played lovely chaotic music in the ’90’s. Zambonis played songs about hockey in the ’90’s. Pigeon had that super cool kind of mysterious sound in the ’90s’. I love the power of Hero. Here’s another band from the ’90’s.

21.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy
22.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
23.) Golgi Apparatus – The Pants
24.) High Water Mark – Belizbeha

Belizbeha played acid jazz in the ’90’s. That’s a cover of a Pants song. That’s the Pants covering Phish. Zola always rocked. Great song from Starlight. Let’s play another song about the power of water.

25.)The Sea Is powerful – Wide Wail
26.) Daydreaming – Thanya Iyer
27.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

Such a powerful song from Anais. Thanya are from Montreal but stopped by the Lamp Shop on Tuesday and played a great show. Wail were so great in the ’90’s. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show will run from 9-11pm US Eastern Time Thursday September 14. It can be streamed from the WBKM Facebook page and will go as follows.

Song before: Fireworks – The Tragically Hip

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. My heart goes out to the people of Florida. Please help out if you can. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring the show. They will bring the giant GPN festival to the waterfront this weekend. Let’s begin tonight with a couple of bands who played at The Monkey House last night.

1.) Taung Child – The Dead Shakers
2.) Echoes On – Cones
3.) Unveiled – Pours
4.) Bidets And Confused – Sad Turtle

Turtle play cool instrumentals with Seinfeld references and are always fun. It was cool to see Chris Shar of Pours at the Landlady show last week but was even cooler to hear him play drums with the Shakers. Cones are from Los Angeles and we are so lucky to live in a town where they can just come and play on a Wednesday night. The Shakers haven’t recorded their full psychedelic sound yet but Child hints at it. More about that in a couple of weeks. OK, it’s time to play the last song on Loose Tooth and I will have to pick a new album to play all the way through, song after song, week after week.

5.) We Tried – Clever Girls
6.) I Like Flowers And I’m Not Afraid To Say It – Peg Tassey MUSIC
7.) Automatic Sweetheart – Hammydown
8.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara

Hana just successfully funded her new album with a Kickstarter campaign and I can’t wait to hear it. It was cool to see Abbie Gail from Hammydown play with Caroline Rose at the Madaila on Main show recently. I got to go to Ottawa and see the mosaiculture and to go to Montreal to see the botanical gardens this week so the Peg song jumped to mind. Great song and EP from Clever Girls. I”m sure they will have something new soon since they have lots of songs in their set that are not recorded yet. Last Saturday I saw a few classic bands at Higher Ground and one who have been playing around but I had just not seen. Here is one of their songs.

9.) Co2U Later – The Tsunamibots
10.) Projector – Vetica
11.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy
12.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons

Cannons played in the early 00’s and rocked us hard. Starlight were a cool ’90’s band. Vetica played some great shows in the 10’s and the Tsunamibots are putting on fantastic shows now. OK, let’s reach even further back into Burlington’s past.

13.) Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights) – The N-Zones
14.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget
15.) Breathe – Ninja Custodian
16.) Cowgirl In The Sand – Real Old and Insane Donkey

That was a band that Seth Yacovone put together to play some Neil Young songs. Ninja used to play cool covers back in the late ’80’s at Nectar’s and other places. Bridget played last Saturday and are playing the next couple of Saturday’s at Nectar’s. N-Zones played back in the early ’80’s or late ’70’s. Burlington has a lot of great original music but we do like covers too. OK, this next band will make a rare appearance in town at Light Club Lamp Shop tomorrow at 7:30.

17.) Northern Skies – The Lindbergh Baby
18.) Say It – Anachronist
19.) A Company Man – Carraway
20.) Drug Laws – SWALE

I love the way that song continuously rocks. Such a fun song from Carraway. Great songs form Anachronist and Lindbergh. So, last Friday there were a bunch of cool bands who played at the Art Hop but heavy rain wiped out most of the outside shows. This band saw a break in the weather, got set up and began to play as the rain came back. This was the only song of their set and they are such troopers for even playing that one.

21.) The Original Original – Black Rabbit
22.) Good Times – Grand
23.) Shark – Greaseface
24.) Blank Daze – Mr. Doubtfire
25.) Blue Lights – Sink or Swim

Sink will play a show this Saturday. Ask them for the detains since it’s an underground show. Doubtfire and Grand played a great show at Radio Bean Monday night. Grease are playing at the Monkey House on Saturday. OK, let’s keep rocking.

26.) By Design – The Nancy Druids
27.) The Great Forgetter – The New Siberians
28.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
29.) Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT

Those are four of many the great songs to come out of the Burlington scene. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only WBKM.org. Aside from starting with the wrong song, it went pretty well. The ’80’s Ladies had the night off, so I got in a teeny bit early and lined up a few extra songs.

Mysterious Mystery – Persian Claws
World Container – The Tragically Hip
Small Town Movie – The Cush
Gold In California – The Red Telephone
Enter Ye The Mystery School – Jon Anderson Live – Official
recording begins

Songs before: Brain Damage/Eclipse – Pink Floyd

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It was an eventful week in our country and solar system. Lots of good and bad things happened. The coolest thing was the eclipse of the moon. It really gives you a perspective of your place in the universe, and shows the complex beauty of this place we get to live in. Celestial events are one of the universal things that everyone can share in. Children are another. We can all relate to the idea of getting older and seeing children born and growing and see the magnificent cycle of life. We have a local artist who plays music for kids every Friday at the Radio Bean. She just released an album of those songs. This is one of my favorites and always reminds me of the magic of life. This is Puff The Magic Dragon by Linda Bassick on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Matter Of Time – Eric George
2.) Puff The Magic Dragon – Linda Bassick
3.) Rame – Francesca Blanchard
4.) Moonlight In Vermont – Willie Nelson

I just loved seeing the moon and wanted to play that one and be reminded of this summer when Neil Young had Lucas Nelson sing that one for us at the Essex Fairgrounds show. Francesca is releasing her new album Saturday in Stowe. If you like that song, check it out. Sorry about mixing up the first two song. Live radio, what can you do? If you like the Eric song, he’s releasing the album tomorrow at the North End Studio. Great song from Linda. I may get to more later. OK, here is the next song on No Need To Beg.

5.) Grass Is Always Greener – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
6.) The Night Syd Barret Died – Colin Nicholas Clary
7.) Boys With Guns – Chin Ho
8.) Film Called Life – Jer Coons

Jer has made a lot of cool music to add to our town. I wanted to play a Chin song and picked that one because of yet another school shooting in our country. As long as we have lots of legislators who identify as pro life and pro gun, we can expect these sorts of things to keep happening. One of these days maybe we will get tired of it and find ways to stop it from happening. I saw Colin play that song at Radio Bean a couple of weeks ago. He was so nice to send me a copy. I love that it mentions Radio Bean, Pearls, The Monkey House and Club Metronome. It also mentions a band. Keep that in mind for later. Great song from Phil Yates and the band. This next song has been running through my head this week, so I thought I’d share.

9.) ComeTooLate – Paper Castles
10.) It’s Happening – Anachronist
11.) Good Witch – Cricket Blue
12.) The Lion Sleeps Tonight – Linda Bassick

Another fun song from Linda. Sweet song from Cricket. I love that song from Anachronist! OK, sit back, relax, light up some incense, flip on the lava lamp. Let’s drift for a while.

13.) Armadillo – Swale
14.) Galactic Cannibalism – Wobblesauce
15.) The High Pass – Ozric Tentacles

Ozric are an English space rock band who played last Tuesday at Higher Ground. It was such a great show and I love how fast and fluid Ed is on the guitar. Wobble are from Boston and were the first band on. They were pretty fun and did a great version of that one. I’m sure they will be back. Hmmm, Swale. OK, let’s rock. This band was mentioned in the Colin Clary song.

16.) Round Sum – Cave Bees
17.) Be Aggressive – BE AGGRESSIVE
18.) Imaginary – Envy
19.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS

It’s so stunningly cool that we found actual water on Mars. I had to play the Francis song to celebrate. Killer song from Envy. Be just played Metronome with the Queers and a couple other bands. I like the Cave Bees too. I still have dad’s car for a bit so Tuesday night I made the last minute decision to go see Ozric. It was raining so hard I could barely see. I took Patchen road to get there, since I couldn’t drive faster than 25mph anyway. The other day Andrew X Smith asked people to post rain songs, so I posted this one.

20.) Left One In The Rain – Alice Austin
21.) In The Rain – Plan B
22.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy

Sweet song from Burlington’s ’90’s. I have so many fond memories of seeing Plan Be at Nectar’s, all those years ago. Killer Alice Austin song. So, have you ever gone to a show. Have you ever been in the know, or gone to a show with someone in the know? Have you ever had backstage passes?

23.) BS Passes – Black Rabbit
24.) You Are My Sunshine – Linda Bassick
25.) So They Say – The New Siberians
26.) Statistik – The Mountain Says No

Love that song from Mountain. Is it time for the new Siberians album yet? Another fun song from Linda. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Sayonara.

27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I played a couple of songs to celebrate my father’s 85th birthday today, and played some fun quirky songs.

The ’80’s Ladies each picked a full album to play, to get ready for St Patrick’s Day, from 7-9, so the station played U2’s The Joshua Tree in it’s entirety followed by The Cure’s Disintegration.

Song before: The Cure – Thompson Gunner

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Tonight, I’m going to cheat a little and begin with a non-local song. Today is my dad’s 85th birthday, so I want to start with something he will appreciate. He’s always been a great father and spent much of his life volunteering in our community. Happy Birthday Dad!

1.) What’s The Buzz-Strange Thing Mystifying – Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack
2.) Addison County Clay – Dirtminers
3.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates
4.) Shadow And Act – Invisible Homes
5.) Sparks – The Color Exchange

Exchange are from North Carolina, but stopped by Nectar’s on Tuesday, and played a fantastic show. I was tired, but their energy was so high that I loved every note. Homes and Phil played killer sets that night too! I know my dad has spent some time struggling with Addison county clay in his lifetime, and hope he appreciated the lyrics. I’m bummed I did not make it to Radio Bean last Saturday to see these next two bands.

6.) See You At Eight – Villanelles
7.) Into The Light – Great Western
8.) Dancing In Dreamtime – Jerichovox

I just got that album yesterday and really like Dreamtime. I will have to check farther into it soon. Great songs from two great bands. There’s a Villanelles related movie happening at Arts Riot Saturday, and Maryse Smith and others are playing live. OK, last week I finished playing Many Things & Many Scenes, the excellent album from Joe Adler. Tonight, let’s start a new album to play song by song, week after week, until we’ve heard it all. Let’s jump into the first song from Swale’s The Next Instead.

9.) Everyone Likes To – Swale
10.) She Brings Me – Sistas in the Pit
11.) Dead Or In Jail – Crazyhearse
12.) Tibbar Tibbar – Black Rabbit

Rabbit are making some killer new music, but I still love that older song. Great rocker from the Crazy band who are playing all over Vermont, it seems. I loved the Sistas show with Death World Wide and ROUGH FRANCIS, and just had to play that song again. Hmmm, Swale. Here’s a fun song from an album that will be released soon.

13..) Co-Pilot – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
14.) Always Monica – Chin Ho
15.) New Age Woman – Pinhead
16.) Highway Girl – The Skamaphrodites

I hadn’t played ska in a while so I had to break that one out. Classics from Pinhead and Chin Ho. This next song is just one of those songs I’ve loved for years. Thanks Caroline Marie for such a great song!

17.) Once Upon – Vedora
18.) Teenage Mother Earth – The Red Telephone
19.) Chop Wood-Carry Water – Zola Turn

Those were just three classic Burlington songs, though RT were in Boston when they wrote that song about Medford. OK, let’s play some songs to highlight Burlington’s quirky side.

20.) Hedgehogs – The Toes
21.) Mixtape – Shark Victim
22.) Womb With A View – Heavy Plains
23.) Cassette – Slingshot Dakota

Toes and Shark have some delightfully quirky music. Remember when you would use a cassette to make a mixtape for the girl you liked, to find a way to connect? I’m not sure how it works in the digital age, but it’s a powerful enough memory that SV and HP have released their newest albums on cassette. OK, at this point I’m long on songs and short on time, so let’s run to the end.

24.) Ricky The Rider – The Mountain Says No
25.) TFAY (live) – Elephants of Scotland
26.) Don’t Cough Me Out – Slowdim
27.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy
28.) In The Rain – Plan B

It’s that time of year when temperatures are rising and precipitation will now come as rain. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. Black Rabbit released a great new EP on Saturday and I featured a few songs. I used that to create a set of really rocking music!

Song before: Prisoners Of Rock And Roll – Neil Young And Crazy Horse

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve got some great new music to play tonight but I want to start with a song I heard at Signal Kitchen a couple of weeks ago, that I keep listening to again and again. This is The Globe by Landlady on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) The Globe – Landlady
2.) Blue Light Shines – The Dwellers
3.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy

Great song from Brad Searles and friends. I love the dwellers song and Gabrielle Douglas‘ voice. There is a new The Cush streaming, but I don’t have a copy to play yet. I will, the moment I do. I love the Globe. On Saturday Black Rabbit released a killer 6 song EP. This one rocks!

4.) Tarpaulin – Black Rabbit
5.) You Want It All – When Particles Collide
6.) The New Super Heroes – Lindy Pear
7.) Cats Were Born – And The Kids

Last Friday, I went to The Monkey House to see Phil Yates and the Affiliates, and The Mountain Says No. The show was over early enough to run to Radio Bean and catch And The Kids. They played a great show and that song jumped out at me. Thanks to Joe Adler for organizing the Burlington-North Hampton band exchange. Lindy used to always be the second band on at the Radio Bean Birthday party, and always rocked! Great song from road warriors When Particles Collide. Songs like Tarpaulin keep me going to see Black Rabbit again and again. Well, last week I played the last song on Dancing With The Big Guy. It’s time to start playing a new album all the way through, song by song, week after week. This is another classic Burlington album. This is the first song from Ninja Jane.

8.) Ninja Jane – Zola Turn
9.) Throw Me Away – Spill
10.) Null – Five Seconds Expired
11.) Carnage – Black Rabbit

Another great song that I’ve loved for a while, that is now recorded. Yea. Killer song from FSE, one of the heavy rock bands from the ’90’s. Same with the Spill song. Zola were always there rocking , when I needed a band. It will be fun to play the full album all the way through. I think this next song is misnamed and is really a cover.

12.) Violence – Peg Tassey and Proud Of It
13.) That’s When I Reach For My Revolver – Ninja Custodian
14.) The Invisibles – Black Rabbit.

Great song from Rabbit. Great Mission Of Burma cover by Ninja, and I think the Peg Tassey MUSIC song was really Is It My Body by Alice Cooper. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town, let’s do it again next week, shall we?
