Song Before: Red – King Crimson

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. There is a ton of great music happening this week and it’s almost all on Saturday. Let’s begin with a band who are a local treasure.

1.) Cancer – SWALE
2.) Mother’s OK – Split Tongue Crow
3.) As Glass – Wren Kitz
4.) Jessie – Danny LeFrancois

I saw Danny a couple of weeks ago play with The Parts at Manhattan. They opened with that song. He just sent me his solo album The Ghost Of Kevin Bacon and that one jumped out at me. Wren is another local treasure. Great song from Crow and gorgeous song by Swale. I want to take a moment to say how professional our local doctors are and to give a shout out to all the wonderful nurses in our town and all around our planet. You are amazing and do wonderful work. OK, let’s play the final song on Shovel Down, even though it’s not listed on the album.

5.) Just Open The Door – Seth Yacovone Band
6.) Winter Is Over – Apartment 3
7.) These Summer Nights – Sarah Blacker & New England Groove Association
8.) Brainwashed Nation – The Snaz

I think the Snaz have a new album but I have not checked it out yet. That’s an older classic. I love to play the Sarah song in the middle of winter and dream of summer. Apartment 3 are releasing their new album Saturday night at ArtsRiot. Great song from Seth. I’ll have to start a new album next week. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring WBKM.ORG. The Snaz will play there Saturday and open for this next artist.

9.) I Can’t See the Light – Marco Benevento
10.) Follow The Arrow – Marco Benevento
11.) Worlds Are Colliding (George Is Getting Upset) – Sad Turtle
12.) The Big One – The High Breaks

The High Breaks will bring their surf rock sound to Finnegan’s on Saturday and Turtle will open for them. Marco is just going to rock Higher Ground on Saturday. Also on Saturday, The Nancy Druids will rock The Monkey House. Sean Toohey and Ann Mindell used to play in Envy and Sean used to play in this next band so their show will sound a little like these next two songs.

13.) Jet Pilot High – The Red Telephone
14.) Falling In And Out Of Sleep – Envy
15.) Nothing In This – The Mountain Says No
16.) Give Love – 1881

That’s another great song from their Action EP. Mountain will release their new album Golden Landfill soon. Classics from Envy and Red Telephone. Last weekend was fun, I got to see Joe Adler and Binger Friday and Jeremy Gilchrist and Joe Adler on Saturday. It sounded a bit like this.

17.) Relax – Joe Adler
18.) Resurrection In Sanskrit I – Binger
19.) If I Knew – Binger
20.) Letter From The 21st – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter

Jeremy did not play that song, but it’s one of my favorites so I had to play it for you tonight. Binger played Resurrection and If back to back and made them sound great. Joe played a great version of Relax. OK, let’s pull out a fun song from the ’90’s.

21.) On My Way – Hover
22.) Way With Words – Kat Wright
23.) Sally – Daniel Waterhouse
24.) Happy Birthday Harry – Hana Zara

I love that song from Hana, and everything else that she does. Cool song from Daniel. Great song from Kat and the band. Hover were so much fun. OK, let’s play another song from Golden Landfill.

25.) Game Of Thrones – The Mountain Says No
26.) Waiting – Mr. Doubtfire
27.) Black, Blue, And White – The New Siberians

Great song from Siberians. Doubtfire have been rocking our town a lot lately and are writing lots of new songs. Hmmm, Mountain. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

28.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to begin by thanking Higher Ground for sponsoring us here at WBKM. There are a ton of bands playing around tonight and over the weekend. Let’s begin with a singer who is playing a show at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center in Stowe on Saturday.

1.) Le Blues – Francesca Blanchard
2.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
3.) Mon Ange – Francesca Blanchard

Francesca will also play on Tuesday at Signal Kitchen so there are lots of ways to experience her music this week. This next singer will return to Radio Bean on Sunday.

4.) Vulture – Rorie Kelly
5.) Clocks On The Wall – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
6.) Sunbeam – Split Tongue Crow
7.) The Worst Part – Bethany Conner Music

Bethany played a tremendous show at Light Club Lamp Shop on Tuesday and I’m so glad I was there. Cool song from the Rutland band. I love that Jeremy Gilchrist song. He will be at Radio Bean on Sunday too. OK, let’s play the next song from Song For My Double.

8.) This Machine – Invisible Homes
9.) Phones – Violet Ultraviolet
10.) Arkansas Sheriff – Lake Superior
11.) Circle K – The New Siberians

Another great new song from the Siberians Black, Blue and White album. Cool rocker from LS. Cool new song from VU’s new Pop City album. I love that Woody Guthrie reference. This next singer is at Light Club Lamp Shop tonight.

12.) Dogs At The Door – Milton Busker
13.) Gettin High – Heavy Plains
14.) MSP2 – ROUGH FRANCIS
15.) Politicians In My Eyes – Death World Wide

Death played a show that was live on Facebook earlier today. They just played DC with Francis. This song makes me think of the debate on Monday where there was a Presidential candidate and some guy who kept saying look at me. Please choose wisely when voting. Francis played at Higher Ground tonight. Plains were at The Monkey House tonight. I should have been at all of those shows, and doing this radio show. That Milton song seemed a little appropriate tonight. This next band are at Foam Brewers tomorrow.

18.) Round Sum – Cave Bees
19.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons

24.) Under Bright Stars – Alice Austin

Great songs from Alice and a cool song from the Siberians first album. Rue will be playing the election night party in November. This next singer just posted a cool old video from 1991. We rocked a lot back then too.

I just got back from my local music radio show on (currently) internet only WBKM. I highlighted some of the cool music that will be happening in town this week, highlighted some of the music from around New England, and said Happy Birthday to Alice Austin.

Songs before: Jenny – Stellastarr
Bury My Lovely – October Project

recording begins

Song before: Flypaper – Persian Claws

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. I usually play a lot of music from bands who play in Burlington and from all over Vermont, but tonight let’s take a trip around New England and check out some cool songs from the past and present.

1.) Two Sleep Arms – Lendway
2.) The Loops (We’re Those Kids) – The Mockingbirds
3.) Uh Oh – Slowdim
4.) Lean In – When Particles Collide

Particles used to live in Maine but have moved to New Hampshire. They will be doing a tour soon, so check them out if you like to rock. Slowdim are from Boston and have some amazing songs. The Mockingbirds were a 90’s band from Rhode Island. That’s such a great song, and highlights the struggle for musicians to be able to get health care, among other things. Lendway were from Vermont and I miss them. Michael moved to California but the other three guys formed The High Breaks and Matt Hagen is in a few other bands too. OK, it’s time for the next song on the album Bernie Sanders recorded with 30 VT artists back in the 80’s.

5.) The Banks of Marble – Bernie Sanders
6.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
7.) New Atlantis – Aaron Flinn
8.) Flicker Flutter – Alpenglow

That’s another song from their brand new album Callisto. I had to play the Aaron song because it’s so good, and it’s been raining so much today it reminds me of an underwater kingdom. I love the song about Bernie that really highlights how Bernie’s policies, when enacted, can help make a beautiful city and help people get health care, even musicians. The imagery in that song is so clear. I love the song by Bernie that shows how he has kept the same message for such a long time. Unwavering. One of the great musicians to come out of Burlington has a birthday today. Here is a tiny bit of the music that she has brought to this world.

9.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
10.) Dragged Around The Universe – Queen Tangerine
11.) Void – The Lavas
12.) Wing To Me – Alice Austin
13.) Left One In The Rain – Alice Austin

I had to play Rain, since it’s been such a damp day. That is from a recent ep. Wing is from her solo album To A Star In The Yard. Alice started in Zola then moved to QT, then The Lavas before heading out on her own. Thanks for all the great music Alice!! OK, this next song has been running though my head lately.

14.) Neighborhood – Black Rabbit
15.) Righteous – Rough Francis
16.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
17.) Bootstrap – Mac Swan & Black Holly
18.) Be Aggressive – Be Aggressive

Aggressive are from Bradford but come up to rock Burlington now and then. Matt Hagen from Lendway plays bass with Holly, and the metal/punk band uses a banjo instead of guitar. Matt also plays bass with Hen who just have bass, drum, and vocals. Great song from the last Francis album. I can’t wait for the next one. Great song from Rabbit. This next band are playing Saturday at Radio Bean

19.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
20.) Crow King – Binger
21.) Kids – Wren Kitz
22.) Doris – Wren Kitz

Those are the closing two pieces form Wren’s new album For Evelyn. He is doing a release show for the album tomorrow. Binger are playing tomorrow at Radio Bean. This next band just had their Kickstarter funded and have begun recording their first full album. It can be a wild ride to see if a band gets a Kickstarter funded and I’m so glad they made it. Here is one form their first EP.

23.) Afterall (Glad We Made It) – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
24.) Last Love – Myra Flynn
25.) Naive Melody – Strange Machines (W Hayley Jane)
26.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow

Such a lovely and powerful song from Crow. They are from Rutland. Machines are from Boston and come to Burlington now and then. That was recorded in February this year at Nectar’s. Great song from Myra. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week. Ta ta.

27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I just got back from doing my local music radio show. I walked in unprepared but think I pulled out a fun one.

Song before: The Rakes Song – The Decemberists

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s 9pm and already dark. It’s still been rainy and chilly at night and sunny and warm but not super hot. It looks like this will not be one of the warmer summers on record, but there have been many stunning days. I caught some of The Precipice: A Vermont Music Festival last weekend and saw some great music. One of the artists that I really enjoyed was Abbie Morin, so I got her album and here is Peace Of Mind on WBKM.org and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Peace Of Mind – Abbie Morin
2.) I Walk The Line – Zoot Wilson
3.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow
4.) Two Sleepy Arms – Lendway

The High Breaks played a super cool show at Radio Bean at the Precipice. Three of the guys used to be in Lendway, so I wanted to play Arms since I have no Breaks to play. I love Split Tongue Crow and that is just a gorgeous song. Fun cover from Zoot. I think he said that was the modern version. Abbie is going to hit the road soon. If she’s in your town, check out her show. After the Breaks set I ran into Todd Gevry and asked if he had heard of And The Kids. He said he had heard the name. I recommended staying and listening. After their set he seemed pretty enthusiastic. I thought they were great and they played a killer version of this song.

5.) All Day All Night – And The Kids
6.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
7.) Sequoia 3 – Binger
8.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
9.) We Shall Overcome – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders

I’m missing the Republican debate tonight, and I’m assuming I’m just going to miss 10-17 people saying the same Approved Talking Points. I had to play Bernie to counter some of that. Bill’s message still resonates hard. Binger played a killer version of 3 at the Precipice, and some pretty killer other songs too. I caught a bit of Johnnie Day Durand playing saw at The Precipice and wanted to play Brothers to give you a hint, and to thank Joe for all that he has done to make our town sound great. Love that Kids song. I’m going to play this next song because I love it and it’s great.

10.) If You Get Lost – Swale
11.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
12.) It’s Real Again – Zola Turn

I think I played all three of those songs because I love them and they are great. OK, on to the next song from The Mountain Says No’s album JV. This is the eponymous song.

13.) The Mountain – The Mountain Says No
14.) Can’t Feel It – Vetica
15.) Dead Or In Jail – Crazyhearse
16.) Holmes, Sweet Holmes – Cameo Harlot

I miss Harlot. Crazy just played the Radio Bean last Tuesday. I love the Vetica song. Hmmm, Mountain. OK, let’s go classic.

17.) First Kiss – Peg Tassey MUSIC
18.) Flypaper – Persian Claws
19.) Always Monica-Down At The Duck – Chin Ho

Three Burlington classics from three different eras. Great songs too. This is another beautiful song that I love.

20.) If Time Was A River – Anna Pardenik
21.) WhoNeedsFriends – Paper Castles
22.) Clocks On the Wall – Jeremy Gilchrist

Great song with great lyrics. Thanks Jeremy. Castles played a killer set at the Precipice at the Light Club Lamp Shop. Great song from Anna. This next song seems to be getting some traction.

23.) Burn It Down Bernadette – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
24.) Knight Ov Swords – The Contrarian
25.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It’s a beautiful night in Burlington but it has been a bit rainy and stormy in the past few days. This is the last show I’ll do this month so I have to start with this song. This is Last Day Of May by The Red Telephone on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind of Music.

1.) Last Day Of May – The Red Telephone
2.) Storm Cloud – When Particles Collide
3.) Miranda – Ninja Custodian
4.) Cats Were Born – And The Kids

Killer song from their new album. They are playing The Monkey House tomorrow. Killer classic Ninja song. Particles just released a new EP called This Town about life in Bangor Maine. It’s pretty cool. This next band are playing at the Monkey tomorrow too.

5.) Magenta Man – Rue Mevlana
6.) Exit Strategy – Rue Mevlana
7.) Futuis Eam – Vows
8.) Unveiled – Pours

I’ve caught Pours a couple of times and they are pretty cool. Vows are from NJ but have played town a couple of times and are coming back soon. That’s from their new album. I love the dramatic sweep to Rue’s songs. Let’s continue on through Swale’s album The Next Instead.

9.) Edible #2 – Swale
10.) The Same Stars – Zola Turn
11.) Oh My God – Sarah Blacker
12.) Beats Me – Satori Bob

Happy Birthday John Baumann! Great song from Sarah’s new album. Considering the imagery in the song, I had to pair it up with the Zola song. She played a killer show last Friday at The Skinny Pancake. I think I’m going to head there tomorrow to see this next artist, who has been playing there all month.

13.) Canadian Cowboy – Arc Iris
14.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow
15.) Oh Freedom – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont musicians

Bernie had a killer kickoff rally for his Presidential run at the waterfront in Burlington Tuesday. I had to work but was inspired by watching the speech on C-Span. Run Bernie Run. Killer song from Rutland’s finest. I’m very excited to catch Iris. This next band are playing Saturday at the Monkey House.

16.) Running Away From Home – The Snaz
17.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates
18.) The Original Original – Black Rabbit
19.) Iron And Metal – The Mountain Says No

Killer song from Mountain’s coming soon album. Same for Rabbit. Great song from Phil. After seeing Sarah at the Pancake last Friday I ran over to Radio Bean and caught this band play a killer show.

20.) Not A Nice Guy – ROUGH FRANCIS
21.) Projector – Vetica
22.) Forbidden Love – Pinhead
23.) These Stories – When Particles Collide

Another great new song from Particles. That one had me dancing around the studio. Killer classic Pinhead song. I miss Vetica. I try to never miss Francis. It’s been raining on and off a bunch today. This seemed appropriate.

24.) Way Like Water – Sarah Blacker
25.) Nothing But The Water I & II – Grace Potter
26.) Jan Michael Vincent – Chin Ho

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It’s dark now, but the days are getting longer and it was fully twilight when I walked down tonight. Thanks for putting up with all of the Lendway songs last week. I’m not doing that tonight but did want to say I will miss Michael Clifford‘s other band too. Michael, stay safe in California. Enjoy the ocean, but take care to not become a shark victim. This is their theme song on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind of Music.

1.) Theme Song – Shark Victim
2.) Ready To Race – Lendway
3.) Ricky The Rider – The Mountain Says No
4.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates

Great song from the new Affiliates album No Need To Beg. They played a fun show at New City Galerie last week to release the album. Killer song from Mountain. I cant’ wait to hear the full album. Great song from Lendway and I will miss SV a lot too. Let’s continue to move through Swale’s album The Next Instead. They played this on WCAX recently.

5.) Old School – Swale
6.) I Forgot – Maryse Smith
7.) The Deepest Space – Hana Zara
8.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band

Great song from Kat and the band. Killer new song from Hana’s album The North. That one really goes into some deep spaces. Great song from the just released Maryse Smith album The Way It Is. This next band opened for Phil, but they played as an acoustic duo, instead of the usual heavy rockers that they are. They did a sweet version of this song.

9.) Neutrino – Black Rabbit
10.) Captain 20 – Barbacoa
11.) Righteous – ROUGH FRANCIS
12.) Relief – Death World Wide

Killer song from the N.E.W. album by Death. Francis played a killer show with Barbacoa last Saturday at Higher Ground. It was cool to see Bill
Mullins play a couple of songs with Francis, and the Barbacoa set with Lowell Thompson was pretty killer too. At the same time that was happening Vedora were playing at Radio Bean so I missed them, but do have a new song from them.

13.) Low Down M2 – Vedora
14.) In Waves – Sarah Blacker
15.) The Whiskey Always Wins – When Particles Collide
16.) The Globe – Landlady

I was so psyched when I heard Landlady were coming to The Monkey House on April 24th (tomorrow) but then realized I would be out of town. Rats. If you are in town, go check them out. Thank me later. Great new song from Particles. If you like that, go to their website where you can pre-order their new EP. That’s the title song from Sarah’s new album that is coming soon. Can’t wait for the full Vedora album. So, tomorrow I’m heading to Montreal for three days of Marillion shows. They have a couple of side shows at a brew pub called Brutopia. On Saturday, Elephants of Scotland are playing so it will be great to see them play in Montreal.

17.) A Different Machine (live) – Elephants of Scotland
18.) Neverland (live) – Marillion

They played at Club Toast once as a three-piece many years ago. So, I totally slacked and missed some chances to see music this week. I’m going to have to catch up with this band soon.

19.) Stop – REDadmiral
20.) Super Sexy Science Party – Wave of the Future
21.) Always Monica – Chin Ho
22.) New Age Woman – Pinhead

Classics from Pinhead and Chin Ho! I love that song from Wave which was recorded live at Nectar’s. OK, time for a few more. Here’s another great one from Maryse.

23.) I Got A Job – Maryse Smith
24.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow
25.) Something I Drew – farm
26.) Resurrection – Death

Another cool song from their new album. Great song from Farm. I hope Split Tongue Crow have a new album soon, the first one has so many beautiful songs. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my 99th local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I got to play some cool new songs.

Song before: On The Air – Peter Gabriel

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a cold and snowy night in Burlington and really fine flakes of snow are being blown around like crazy. Sometimes I think about the air that is all around us but is invisible. We can’t see it or feel it, unless it’s really warm or cold, but it’s the fuel that we burn to live. Thinking of air reminds me of the spiritual nature we have between our selves and our bodies. Sometimes we can see air when water solidifies in it and forms clouds. This is Clouds by Anachronist on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Clouds – Anachronist
2.) Windigo – Crazyhearse
3.) Breathe – Ninja Custodian
4.) Knocked The Winds – Sarah Blacker

Air is such a vital component to our lives, when we get a setback we can describe it as having the air taken out of us. Nice cover of the Pink Floyd song by Ninja. Air can be gentle or can be violent like the end of the Anachronist song and the Crazyhears song. Crazy are playing The Monkey House tomorrow, which is a day with way too much music! Let’s keep the theme going, and play the next song on Many Things & Many Scenes.

5.) Cloudy Mind – Joe Adler
100th Sounds Of Burlington show promo – James Lockridge
6.) Wing To Me – Alice Austin
7.) Breathing In – The Hero Cycle

I love the huge sweep of that song. Air, it’s completely insubstantial but birds and airplanes can still use it to fly. Great song by Joe, who is playing with The Wee Folkestra tomorrow at Radio Bean. Tomorrow at Higher Ground And The Kids release their new album Turn To Each Other. I have a ticket and can’t wait. Here’s a song from the album that came out Tuesday.

8.) No Countries – And The Kids
9.) Ricky The Rider – The Mountain Says No
10.) She Brings Me – Sistas in the Pit

Sistas are from the Bay area in California but opened the show for Death and Rough Francis at the Flynn Theatre last Friday. That song really highlights the killer lead guitar they had working. Great new song from Mountain. That’s one of the songs that if you listen to a couple of times, it will get stuck in your head. Thanks for sending that to me this morning Ben Maddox! Tomorrow at Higher Ground it’s And The Kids and Alpenglow. I’m so psyched. Here is a song from their last EP Chapel.

11.) Eliza – Alpenglow
12.) The Way It Is – Maryse Smith
13.) Better Half – Abbie Morin

That song is so catchy I had to play it again. I should check out the rest of the album. Great title song from Maryse’s about to be released new album. Let’s go back to the air theme.

14.) Breathe – Barika
15.) Windy Pines – Kat Wright and Brett Hughes
16.) This Is Our Good Night – Aya Inoue
17.) Armadillo – Swale

Swale were great Saturday night at Radio Bean playing covers and letting people form the audience sing with them. We had worked out a Marillion song for them to play and for me to sing, and now I have twice as much admiration for anyone who gets up and plays. Aya will play with Joe at the Bean tomorrow with Wee Folk. She is such a great singer and has well structured songs. Kat and Brett are both local treasures. This next guy is too, and he’s playing tomorrow at Juniper at Hotel Vermont.

18.) Born A Man – Aaron Flinn
19.) Glory Glory – And The Kids
20.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow

I haven’t heard much from Rutland rockers Split Tongue Crow lately, but love that song from their first album. Great new ATK song. All of these next songs got played at the Flynn last Friday. This set is dedicated to my brother Ken.

21.) Scream – Sistas In The Pit
22.) Black & Red – ROUGH FRANCIS
100th Sounds Of Burlington show promo – James Lockridge
23.) Can You Give Me A Thrill??? – Death World Wide

It was a great show at the Flynn and Death closed with that one. Francis and Sistas were magnificent at the show too. OK, time for a couple more songs. Here is another new ATK song.

24.) All Day All Night – And The Kids
25.) Windows Down – Lendway

Ending where we began, driving around feeling the wind on your face. OK, maybe not at this time of year, but soon. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
