intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. One of the legendary Burlington musicians from the ’90’s released a new ep this week. She is celebrating with a release party tonight in California. This is the title song.

1.) Cowboy Summer – Alice Austin
2.) Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist
3.) Snow In The Controls – Dom The Barber
4.) All The Same To You – Milton Busker

Great song from Milton. I’ve been waiting until it was snowy out to play the Dommer Barber song. It isn’t really snowy out, but is in late January. I have played the Jeremy song before but that was a demo and this is the brand new studio version. Great stuff from Alice, as always. This next band played a fantastic version of this song last week at Signal Kitchen.

5.) Golden Crutch – Swale
6.) Son, You Are No Island – Torres
7.) Year Of The Snake – Tyler Daniel Bean
8.) Jack Sharp – Swale

Swale played a rocking version of that one too. Tyler played that song solo acoustic, but it had a lot of fire, and the version I just played is the full band version. Pretty cool song. Island was the song that stood out the most at the Torres show, though I really liked it all. I love the slow build and heavy surge at the end. I though it would be fun to bookend that set with Swale. OK, here is the next song on Red Flannel Hash

9.) Alienation – Black Rabbit
10.) Throw Me Away – Spill
11.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons
12.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian

Classic rocker from Ninja. FTC rocked us for a few years in the early 2000’s and put on some pretty intense shows. Spill are another great ’90’s band and that song always grabbed me. I just love that Rabbit song!! There is a cool show happening tomorrow at Twofourtwo Main with these next three bands.

13.) Last Song – Carraway
14.) No Way – Phantom Suns
15.) Nothing Important – Doom Service

Doom have a new album called Live At Mount Doom, so I got that one from that album. Great songs from Phantom and Carraway. I really have to make it to 242 Main tomorrow. OK, let’s keep rocking.

16.) Ladders – Heavy Plains
17.) Great Scott – Wave Of The Future
18.) Too Drunk – The Dirty Blondes
19.) Hello World – Screaming Skull
20.) On A Sunday – Screaming Broccoli

Killer song from the late ’80’s early ’90’s band. That Skull song is so cool. It’s a short intro followed by a shorter burst of intense rock. I just heard that the Blondes are playing at the Bowie tribute thing at Higher Ground tonight and I’m bummed I missed them. That is such a fun song from Wave. Great rocker from Plains. OK, let’s keep rocking.

21.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
22.) Not True – Peg Tassey
23.) Blue Light Shines – Gabrielle Douglas and The Dwellers
24.) Plastic Revolution

I keep singing that song “Revolution, Bern style now.” Great rocker from Gabby. Great rocker from Peg. Earthquakes had me bouncing around the studio, but of course, the other songs had me doing that too. OK, let’s keep rocking.

25.) Something I Drew – Farm
26.) Gas And Oil – Gas And Oil
27.) Weapons Factory – The Wards with the Dirty Blondes
28.) Purpose and Object – The Contrarian

I love that song from Casey Merlin Rae. Classic from the ’80’s punk band. That was a re-recorded version with a bit of help from Diane Sullivan on vocals. Great song from Beano’s solo band. Hmmm, Farm. I liked the Torres show so much, I want to toss in another song. This is the title song from the new album.

29.) Sprinter – Torres
30.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from doing my local music radio show on internet only WBKM.org. It started slow and classic then began to rock, then opened up to the world.

Song before: Closer To The Heart – RUSH

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. On Sunday I went to Montreal with my brother Ken to see Rush, and listened to a couple of old shows. This song jumped out at me so I wanted to start the night here. This is Yardsale by Lendway on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Yardsale – Lendway
2.) Twisted – Guppyboy
3.) You Home (Keep Safe Mix) – Eef
4.) Good Witch – Cricket Blue

Cricket have been getting a lot of mentions for their beautiful music. I just checked out their EP today and it’s quite nice. Eef are getting back together for some shows. Cool. I can’t believe I don’t play Guppyboy more often. This next singer is in town for a few days.

5.) Left One In The Rain – Alice Austin
6.) All The Same To You – Milton Busker
7.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith
8.) The North – Hana Zara

Love the reference to the old north end of Burlington in that song. Maryse Smith played a killer show at Signal Kitchen last week. Milton will be at Radio Bean tomorrow at 8:30. OK, let’s rock with the next song from JV.

9.) Ricky The Rider – The Mountain Says No
10.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit
11.) Destroying Everything You See – Blue Button
12.) Lunacy – Cave Bees

Killer rocking song from the Bees! BB are a great band too! Black Rabbit have a new album out called Red Flannel Hash. It’s really good and that was the first song. This next band are playing tomorrow at Signal Kitchen.

13.) Popular Crowd – Swale
14.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
15.) Alienation – Black Rabbit
16.) Sugar Coated Candy Stix – Dino Bravo VT

Dino will play with The Mountain Says No Saturday night at The Monkey House when Mountain officially release JV. Another killer new Rabbit song. I just can’t get enough of Earthquakes. Tonight at Light Club Lamp Shop Jeff Howlett is taking tintype pictures of Burlington people. I stopped in earlier and had my picture taken. I’ll stop by later to pick it up. He used to be a Burlington rocker and this is one of his bands.

17.) Null – Five Seconds Expired
18.) Morning Again – Doll Fight
19.) Void – The Lavas
20.) Blue Sky – Black Rabbit

Another great new Rabbit song. Zola Turn evolved into Queen Tangerine who evolved into The Lavas. I’ve always liked that song. Doll Fight used to rock this town hard, and featured Jane Boxall Percussion who also plays drums on the new Rabbit album. This is another classic band from the ’90’s.

21.) Throw Me Away – Spill
22.) Linea – Vetica
23.) Space Weed Zombies – Wave of the Future

Killer song recorded live at Nectar’s. I just loved Vetica. So, this week a couple of things happened in the psyche of America and we took a couple of small steps towards dealing with racial issues. The Fair Housing Act was upheld and many businesses have started disassociating themselves with symbols that promote ideas of separation, when in fact, we all started from the same root. Here are some songs about getting past the physical and seeing people for who they are, not just what they look like.

24.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
25.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks (AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
26.) We Shall Overcome – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and 30 Vt musicians

Bernie has been fighting for everyone to get an equal chance for decades. Run Bernie Run! Bill told it like no one else could. Joe just nailed the idea of inclusion on that one. Binger do the same on these three.

27.) Sequoia I, II, and III – Binger
28.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show on Wbkm Dot Org. I had one stunning mix and played some sweet songs.

Song before: Wondering Where The Lions Are – Bruce Cockburn

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve been thinking about eternity and the nature of what we are recently. It’s weird to think of the spirit that is you is so tied to a physical body, and that large wonderful body would be almost nothing if you took away the water. Let’s play some songs about water and think about what it means to be alive. This is Left One In The Rain by Alice Austin on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Left One In The Rain – Alice Austin
2.) Orange Like Water – The Cush
3.) Waterlanding – Swale
4.) Nothing But The Water II – Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Great song from Grace talking about one of the uses of water, it’s a great thing to balance the element of fire. The Swale and Cush songs have such a lovely watery feel. (note: the mix from Orange into Landing was seamless). Of course, rain is a very important iteration of water. OK, let’s move on to the next song from Joe Adler‘s Many Things & Many Scenes,

5.) Many Things & Many Scenes – Joe Adler
6.) Every Time I Hear That Mellow Saxophone – Big Joe Burrell
7.) Mystery Blues – Zoot Wilson
8.) Promises – Vedora

Great song from Vedora. Matt has a side project every Monday in February at Radio Bean from 7-8. Last week I worked until 7:30 and missed it. Rats. Great classic songs from Burlington’s past with Joe and Zoot, and great song from Burlington’s present by Joe. This next singer is playing the Bean on Saturday at 7. I’ll see if I can make it if I get out early enough.

9.) Good Thing – Maryse Smith
10.) If Time Was A River – Anna Pardenik and Her Apologies
11.) Kill The Lights – Monoprix
12.) Change My Heart – Rusty Belle

Rusty are from North Hampton but come to Burlington often. They are playing the Skinny Pancake on Friday. Cool song from Brett Hughes and co. The Anna song would have fit nicely into the first set. This next band is playing The Monkey House tomorrow.

13.) Might As Well Settle – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
14.) Secret Makeout Factory – And The Kids
15.) On My Way – Hover
16.) See Me On My Way – Superhuman Happiness

Great band name and sweet song. Hover were a ’90’s Burlington band. It’s almost time for the And The Kids new album and tour. If you liked the Hover song, you’ll like this next set too!

17.) Finder – Madelines
18.) Circumstance – Tokyo Storm Warning
19.) Throw Me Away – Spill
20.) That’s When I Reach For My Revolver – Ninja Custodian

That song used to rock Burlington hard and often. I love all of those rocking songs that helped Burlington to keep expanding the sound of our town. I’m very psyched for this show next week at the Flynn Theatre. These three bands will be rocking out.

21.) Scream – Sistas in the Pit
22.) Righteous – ROUGH FRANCIS
23/) Freakin’ Out – Death World Wide

I’m sending that set out to my brother Ken who will go to the show with me. OK, let’s head back to classic Burlington.

24.) Voodoo Camero – Wide Wail
25.) The Tradeoff In Vermont – Lindy Pear
26.) Lights Of Montreal – Lobot
27.) Geograph (2015 mix) – Elephants of Scotland

Ending where we began, on the edge of sea and sand. Ken and I, and most of the elephants, will see the lights of Montreal this summer when we go see Rush. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from sort of doing my radio show and seeing live music. I wanted to go see the Dirty Blondes so I voice-tracked all my breaks, set the songs into the queue and went over to Club Metronome to rock.

Song before: Two Places At Once – The Church Band

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I saw a lot of rock and roll in the past week, so let’s kick off with the next song from Ninja Jane on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind of Music.

1.) Racecar Driver – Zola Turn
2.) Be Aggressive – BE AGGRESSIVE
3.) Scorned Woman – The Dirty Blondes

Both the Blondes and Be Aggressive are playing at Club Metronome with Dino Bravo VT at 10, so I’m recording the breaks early and will head over to the show. (Be Aggressive cancelled so Jason Cooley did a Cooleoke set). Last Saturday I saw a killer rock band play at the Fletcher Free Library.

4.) Miles From Where We Started – Tesla’s Revenge
5.) All I Want Is A Hoverboard – Wave of the Future
6.) Oklahoma Road Rage – Crazyhearse
7.) Demons – Waylon Speed

Last Saturday Waylon and ROUGH FRANCIS played a show on a ferry on Lake Champlain. The timing was too tight with work, so I went to the Fletcher Free Library to see SADG’s, Tesla’s Revenge and S.e. Ward, then headed to Nectar’s to see Wave, Burning Monk, and The Mountain Says No. Crazyhearse just took a trip across the USA and played a bunch of shows. Another killer song from the Wave ep. Saturday, Black Rabbit and Rough Francis will play at Charlie O’s in Montpelier.

8.) Black And Red – Rough Francis
9.) Carnage – Black Rabbit
10.) Weapons Factory – The Wards
11.) Forbidden Love – Pinhead

A couple of classic Burlington bands alongside two great current Burlington bands. I think the Saturday show is the debut of Jane Boxall playing with Black Rabbit, so that should be great. Up next is another song by a band who rocked the library

12.) Wrappers – SADGs
13.) Hoping That I’m Wrong – Will
14.) Wilderland – Anais Mitchell
15.) Lithuania – Hana Zara

I just love that song by Hana. Anais is playing a couple of shows on Sunday at the Wyswyg festival. I love that song from Will and both they, and SADGs are from Rutland. This next set is dedicated to Washington and Colorado.

16.) Grandma Betty – Brother Zag
17.) Seeds And Stems – The New Siberians
18.) Space Weed Zombies – Wave Of The Future

That was Wave live at Nectar’s a few months back. They played a wonderful high energy show last Saturday when they released their new EP. Great song from the Siberians. Brother Zag, the most elusive singer in town. Here’s another great Burlington song.

19.) If You Get Lost – Swale
20.) Throw Me Away – Spill
21.) Uh-Oh – Slowdim
22.) Gentleman – Plan B

Great song from Plan B. Slowdim are from Boston and have a bunch of great songs, like that one. Killer song from the ’90’s by Spill and Swale played a killer Lost at the Precipice. Here’s another of my favorite songs.

23.) Pennsylvania – The Red Telephone
24.) Naked Garden – Peg Tassey MUSIC
25.) Oscar Man – Torpedo Rodeo
26.) Sunny Side Of The Couch – The Lestons

That’s Matthew Stephen Perry‘s old band. His new one, Dino Bravo don’t have anything recorded yet, but I’ll get it to you when they do. Killer songs from Torpedeo and Peg. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. Black Rabbit released a great new EP on Saturday and I featured a few songs. I used that to create a set of really rocking music!

Song before: Prisoners Of Rock And Roll – Neil Young And Crazy Horse

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve got some great new music to play tonight but I want to start with a song I heard at Signal Kitchen a couple of weeks ago, that I keep listening to again and again. This is The Globe by Landlady on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) The Globe – Landlady
2.) Blue Light Shines – The Dwellers
3.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy

Great song from Brad Searles and friends. I love the dwellers song and Gabrielle Douglas‘ voice. There is a new The Cush streaming, but I don’t have a copy to play yet. I will, the moment I do. I love the Globe. On Saturday Black Rabbit released a killer 6 song EP. This one rocks!

4.) Tarpaulin – Black Rabbit
5.) You Want It All – When Particles Collide
6.) The New Super Heroes – Lindy Pear
7.) Cats Were Born – And The Kids

Last Friday, I went to The Monkey House to see Phil Yates and the Affiliates, and The Mountain Says No. The show was over early enough to run to Radio Bean and catch And The Kids. They played a great show and that song jumped out at me. Thanks to Joe Adler for organizing the Burlington-North Hampton band exchange. Lindy used to always be the second band on at the Radio Bean Birthday party, and always rocked! Great song from road warriors When Particles Collide. Songs like Tarpaulin keep me going to see Black Rabbit again and again. Well, last week I played the last song on Dancing With The Big Guy. It’s time to start playing a new album all the way through, song by song, week after week. This is another classic Burlington album. This is the first song from Ninja Jane.

8.) Ninja Jane – Zola Turn
9.) Throw Me Away – Spill
10.) Null – Five Seconds Expired
11.) Carnage – Black Rabbit

Another great song that I’ve loved for a while, that is now recorded. Yea. Killer song from FSE, one of the heavy rock bands from the ’90’s. Same with the Spill song. Zola were always there rocking , when I needed a band. It will be fun to play the full album all the way through. I think this next song is misnamed and is really a cover.

12.) Violence – Peg Tassey and Proud Of It
13.) That’s When I Reach For My Revolver – Ninja Custodian
14.) The Invisibles – Black Rabbit.

Great song from Rabbit. Great Mission Of Burma cover by Ninja, and I think the Peg Tassey MUSIC song was really Is It My Body by Alice Cooper. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town, let’s do it again next week, shall we?
