3.) Cold Cold – Aaron Flinn
4.) Let’s – Milton Busker and the Grim Work

That’s the last song from the Grim Work album. I’ll have to find a new one to play all the way through starting next week. What a great album. Cool songs from Aaron, Dave and Lake. It’s cold. No reason to fight it. Let’s embrace it, but first, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for a hot performance.

5.) Hawks – Happy Spangler
6.) Bit O Honey – Happy Spangler
7.) Golden Cadillac = Happy Spangler
8.) Never Let Me Go – Happy Spangler

Thanks Ryan Cohen for literally making everything sound so great. Thanks to Sam Mark for helping with the setup and tear down. Thanks Phoebe Zorn and Chrusty Barnacles for the video work. Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows:

Epitaph (Including March For No Reason/Tomorrow And Tomorrow) – King Crimson

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I got out of work a couple of nights ago and looked up and saw Orion. It’s the sign that winter is here and it always reminds me of this song.

1.) Stylus of Id – Somah
2.) When The Nights Get Long – Carraway
3.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit
4.) East Jabip – REDadmiral

With politics on so many people’s minds lately, Jabip seemed appropriate. It’s the season to rush around like crazy and sometimes it seems like it’s a countdown to meltdown. Thanks for explaining that feeling so well Black Rabbit. The days are getting shorter and shorter so the Carraway song is sounding perfect. Since they first played it back in the ’90’s that song by the short lived Somah always comes to mind at this time of year. OK, let’s play the next song on Seth Yacovone‘s new album Shovel Down.

5.) Caveman Guerrilla – Seth Yacovone Band
6.) A Company Man – Carraway
7.) Lights Of Montreal – Lobot
8.) Summer Falls – Lendway

I miss Lendway. Such a great song. Great song from Lobot that I love to pull out now and then. Zeus Springsteen sometimes play that one. More on that later. Another great new song from Carraway. Such a fun new song from Seth and the band. OK, let’s play some more super new music.

9.) I’m All Right You Say – Anachronist
10.) Nightingale – 1881
11.) It’ll Be Okay – Let’s Whisper
12.) Sri Lanka – Ellen Degenerates

Ellen will be at The Monkey House on Saturday. Great song from the Smittens offshoot. Great new song from 1881. Same for Anachronist. I felt terrible upon hearing of the death of Eric Olsen‘s father. I don’t know what to do or say, so I will just try and tell you all how amazing Eric is. It’s the only way I can think of to honor Eric’s father. Here is a small sampling of what Eric has helped create to fill our ears and hearts.

13.) Good Medicine – SWALE
14.) Armadillo – Swale
15.) Faineant – Swale
16.) You Are Not The Photograph – Swale
17.) Hit – Blue Button

Eric also plays with James Kochalka and Let Loco and likely others. I think Swale have a new album coming soon and are recording a video on Saturday. It’s too bad that I’m working. Those are all such great songs. OK, let’s keep rocking.

18.) The Meanest Song I’ll Ever Write – Milton Busker
19.) American Proxy – The Hero Cycle
20.) Today Is Tomorrow – The Red Telephone
21.) Black Blue and White – The New Siberians

I just love the new Siberians album. Great song by Telephone. If you like that song and are in town, check out The Nancy Druids sometime. Hero played around for a year or so in the 2000’s and I love their songs. Great song from Milton. OK, let’s keep rocking.

22.) The Day I Met You – Dirtminers
23.) Bridge To Panda Chaos – Zeus Springsteen
24.) U Can Love If U Want To – Peg Tassey MUSIC

Great classic from Peg. That’s a brand new song from the mighty Zeus. I’ve seen them a couple of times and love them. I’m so psyched to get more of their music and hopefully see them again soon. Great classic from Dirtminers. OK, there’s not much time left so let’s go out with a nautical theme.

25.) The River – Kat Wright
26.) The Anchor – Carraway
27.) Basalt Anchor – Vedora
28.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM runs from 9-11pm US Eastern time and can be heard from the Facebook link above, at 107.1FM or streamed at WBKM.ORG. Tonight’s show has some solid rock and will highlight a tiny amount of the ton of music that happened last week and will happen next week. The show will go as follows:

Song before: Me And A Gun – Tori Amos

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. I was pretty shocked by the mass shooting in Orlando this week and think it’s high time we did something about finding ways to help disaffected youth and to at least make sure people purchasing guns have to go through a background check. There is no reason assault rifles should be for sale to the public and I was stunned by the Seven Days article this week that explained how easy it is to get one with no ID at all. Now that the problem is defined, can we find a solution? Of course, instead of focusing on hate and fear, if we focus on joy and music we can make our world a happy place. Let’s begin tonight with a band who played on Church St on Sunday to help close out Jazzfest. They did a great version of this one.

1.) The Coast – The High Breaks
2.) Give Up Enough – When Particles Collide
3.) Kick Rocks – And The Kids
4.) Eighty Nine – Black Rabbit

I really enjoyed seeing Rabbit at Four Quarters Brewing on Saturday. They played that one, and the rest of their catalog, and a few covers. Great brand new songs from Kids and Particles. I just loved the show by the Breaks on Sunday. OK, up next is a band who are playing at Higher Ground tonight.

5.) East Jabib – REDadmiral
6.) Before This Ends Well – Coquette
7.) Burn It Down Bernadette – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
8.) The Mime – Joe Adler

Joe and his band The Wee Folkestra will be at Burger Night at Bread And Butter Farm in Shelburne tomorrow. Phil Yates and the band will be at Nectar’s on Monday. I just found that song from Coquette. They have been playing around town lately so I thought I’d toss it into the mix. Great song from Admiral. OK, last week we finished off playing Callisto by Alpenglow all the way through, so it’s time to begin a new album. This is a classic from a few years ago. It’s called Giant Places by a band called Lendway.

9.) Ready To Race – Lendway
10.) WalkingInCircles – Raq
11.) Thinner Than Water – Somah
12.) The Naked Garden – Peg Tassey MUSIC

Such a wonderful song from Peg. I was looking through some old playlists the other day and though it was time to pull Thinner out again. The Raq song always gets me going. Great song from Lendway. That is the first song from Giant Places and I will play that album all the way through over the next few weeks. OK, This band are playing a couple of shows in Woodstock Vt on June 17 and 18 so check them out if you are in the area.

13.) You Are Not The Photograph – SWALE
14.) Can’t Feel It – Vetica
15.) Be Aggressive – BE AGGRESSIVE
16.) Dead Or In Jail – Crazyhearse
17.) Destroying Everything They See – Blue Button

Great song by Button. They have a show coming up in a few weeks with Cave Bees and Black Rabbit so I’m getting psyched early. I love that rocker from Crazy. Aggressive will be at The Monkey House next Wednesday. I love the Vetica song, and Swale too. OK, let’s keep rocking. This band will be at Foundation (under Drink) on Friday.

18.) 1.21 Gigawatts/Great Scot – Doom Service
19.) Green Peaks Dark Valleys – Get A Grip
20.) Anti-Social Media – Voices in Vain
21.) Weapons Factory – The Wards

Classic Burlington song from the Wards. VIV were recommended so I had to check out that song. Grip will play at 242 Main on Friday. This next song is lots of fun.

22.) 1.21 Jiggawatts – Wave of the Future
23.) Fly On The Wall – Zola Turn
24.) Righteous – ROUGH FRANCIS
25.) Long Term Sermon – The Mountain Says No

Killer song from Mountain. They should have a new album reasonably soon. Same for Francis. Zola were a great local band from the ’90’s. This next song is usually a closer but I think it will fit well here:

26.) Reprise – The Cush
27.) Promises – Vedora
28.) Run My Man – Alice Austin
29.) Say It – Anachronist

Great song from the central Vermont band. Alice has put so much great music into our town. Vedora played some great shows for a couple of years. Hmmm, The Cush. OK, there is time for a couple more.

30.) This Land Is Your Land – Bernie Sanders and 30 VT musicians
31.) Tha Critic – Ninja Custodian

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Farewell…

32.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit
outro

Songs after: What Color Is God? (live) – Fish
Hinterland – TILT
Little Earthquakes – Tori Amos

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Despite a super warm December, winter has pretty much set in. Let’s begin with some local songs about the cold time of year.

1.) Winter – Dave Jarvis
2.) Christmas Sled – The Mountain Says No
3.) Stylus Of Id – Somah
4.) Northern Memory – The Cush

Such great cold imagery from the Texas band who spent many winters playing lovely music for us. Thanks Cush!! Stylus is all about Orion who appears in the sky in winter. That sled that you got for Christmas, but couldn’t use at the time, well now there is lots of snow and cold, so have at it. Nice song from Dave. It’s a bit of a mellow evening in Burlington, so let’s go with that vibe for a bit.

5.) Good Thing – Maryse Smith
6.) The Night Syd Barrett Died – Colin Nicholas Clary
7.) Eve & Adam – Cricket Blue
8.) Afterlife – Hana Zara

Great song from Hana about living in the space between two lives. Great song from Cricket who are playing shows all over. I love all the local references in Syd. Super strong song from Maryse Smith. Let’s keep the mellow but strong vibe going for a bit.

9.) Letter From The 21st – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
10.) New York My Lovely – Joshua Glass Music
11.) I’ve Been Down – Bob Wagner
12.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band

Such a great song from Kat Wright and the band. Hopefully they will have new music soon. Nice cover done by a killer guitar player and a driving force behind Dark Side of the Mountain, who are playing in Stowe soon. If you like the Josh song check out his band Sammich. Great song from Jeremy Gilchrist. Tomorrow night at Radio Bean Barbacoa will be the backing band for a bunch of local artists playing David Bowie songs. I don’t know if anyone in this next band will be part of it, but they did release this song this week.

13.) Starman – Madaila
14.) Freak Out Friday – Rue Mevlana
15.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
16.) Melt – Chin Ho

Nice cover song from Ho. I thought it would be fun to bookend that set with the covers and stick a couple of new and old classics in between. This next set is for the optimists of the world.

17.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont musicians
18.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
19.) Sequoia 3 – Binger
20.) In The Garden Of Mystic Lovers – Francis Dunnery

Francis is from Scotland but he lived in Vermont for a while around the time he released the album Man. He played Mystic and other song from the album often at Club Metronome. I just love the sentiment from Binger, and the rock. Great words from Bill and Bernie. OK, let’s take a swing through some ’90’s classics.

21.) On My Way – Hover
22.) Finder – Madelines
23.) Bloodboy – Envy
24.) Help Wanted – Wide Wail

Absolute classic from Wail. Great rocker from Envy. Finder is such a fun song with a great riff. I just love the Hover song. This next song is one that has always spoken to me. This is one of the coolest bands to ever play JP’s.

25.) Chester Allen – The World Famous Hanglows.

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week. I’ll say goodbye with the next song on Red Flannel Hash.

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only WBKM. I highlighted a couple of the artists who make our town great, one who just left and one who is still playing for us. I also highlighted one of the great institutions that have brought music to our town for decades.

Before: Sealine – The Church Band
The Man’s Too Strong – Dire Straits

Song before: Orion – Jethro Tull

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Tonight I want to highlight a couple of cool musicians who have brought so much to our town. I’ll get to that in a moment but first something cool happened earlier this week. I finally looked up in the sky and saw Orion. Despite the 50 degree temperatures today, you know winter is coming when Orion appears. This is my favorite local song about Orion.

1.) Stylus of Id – Somah
2.) Art Of Vandalay – Sad Turtle
3.) Super Sexy Science Party – Wave of the Future

Justus Gaston plays guitar both in Sad Turtle and Wave. He’s a pretty cool guy and also plays drums in another cool band. I’ll get to that in a moment. For as long as I have been seeing and listening to music in town there has been a radio station from UVM that has taught people how to be DJ’s and has brought lots of underground music to any who want to listen. The have also done a stunning job of supporting local music for decades. Their local music show is called WRUV Exposure and happens every Wednesday. A few days ago the host, Dom the Barber, sent me a message that one of my favorite local bands would be playing live in the studio. He invited me to join them for the performance and to chat on the air in between songs. That happened yesterday, December 9th from 6:30-8pm. Dom sent me an mp3 of the show and I’m going to play the whole thing for you now. This band features Justus Gaston on drums and this is The Mountain Says No.

WRUV Exposure featuring The Mountain Says No playing live in their studio

4.) Long Term Sermon live – The Mountain Says No
5.) Who Could Say live – The Mountain Says No
6.) Iron And Metal live – The Mountain Says No
7.) Restaurant live – The Mountain Says No
8.) Christmas Sled studio version that Dom played – The Mountain Says No
9.) 3,000 live – The Mountain Says No
10.) Glazerbeam live – The Mountain Says No
11.) King Grifter live – The Mountain Says No
12.) I Know Right live – The Mountain Says No
13.) Ricky The Rider live – The Mountain Says No
14.) Come And Decide live – The Mountain Says No
15.) The Bomb live – The Mountain Says No

Hey guys, Tim here back in the studio. I think I played that whole thing for a few reasons. That is exactly what WRUV sounds like and has always sounded like. I really wanted to thank Justus for all of his contributions to our music scene, and to thanks Andrew Frappier, Ben Maddox, and Jedd Kettler for the same reason. I did it because that was a band playing a full live set that happened in town yesterday so is the sound of Burlington by definition. I did it mostly because I had it as one file and I really wanted to play both new Mountain songs on my show. Up next, I want to thank another person who has put a ton of music into our town. His name is Justin Gonyea and he has promoted a ton of shows at 242 Main and has played in a few bands. He’s off to Seattle and we wish him the best of luck. I’ll play a bunch of his music as a thank you for all he has added. But, before that, let’s play the second song on Red Flannel Hash, the album I am playing all the way through, song for song, week after week.

16.) Too Good – Black Rabbit
17.) Buy Two Get None Free demo – Crime Scene
18) Hello World – Screaming Skull
19.) Black Oil – Doom Service
20.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service

Justin played in Doom, Skull and did the Crime Scene thing with Bobby Hackney Jr.., Matthew Kimball and a few others just before leaving town. Thank you Justin!!!! Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town, let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I promised some punk rock and some classic rock, and think I delivered. I also threw in some experimental new stuff.

Song before: Orion – Jethro Tull

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a chilly night in Burlington. There are a few people waking out and down the beautifully lit Church st. Tonight let’s start with a recording from Nectar’s from the WBKM 7th birthday party a couple of weeks ago. This is the Seth Yacovone Band playing some Neil Young & Crazy Horse on WBKM and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Cowgirl In The Sand – Real Old & Insane Donkey
2.) Little Wing – Bob Wagner and the Book “em Blues Band

Both of those were recorded at the WBKM 7th birthday party. There is an amazing amount of talent in those two bands! This next band played our birthday show too, but I don’t have a recording of it. This is two great guitarists from another live show.

3.) Destiny Waits – Bud & Budd ~ The Kind Buds
4.) These Summer Nights – Sarah Blacker
5.) Lean In – When Particles Collide

I love that song from the great duo from Maine. Sarah is from Boston but plays Burlington now and then too. Great guitar playing and singing from the Buds. I’ve just been handed a bulletin. This just in, punk rock is alive and well in Burlington Vermont!

6.) Hello World – Screaming Skulls
7.) Green Peaks Dark Valleys – Get A Grip
8.) Vermont City Living – Gorgon
9.) Be Aggressive – BE AGGRESSIVE
10.) Black Oil – Doom Service

Great song about the X-Files in the DS song. They’ve been playing lots of shows in town lately. Love the BA song. Gorgon always rock. Skulls is a new band with Justin Gonyea who is also in Doom. Grip are playing this weekend at Radio Bean. Friday has three can’t miss shows, so I’ll have to miss two. Dino Bravo VT and Crazyhearse are playing The Monkey House, Black Rabbit and Cave Bees are playing Manhattan Pizza and Pub, and ROUGH FRANCIS are celebrating their birthday with Friday and Saturday shows at Radio Bean. Friday they are playing with Varsity Drag, Blowtorch, Blue Button, Pours, and Get A Grip. Saturday they are playing with Ravi Shavi, Endless Jags, Swale, Black Rabbit and DJ Disco Phantom. I work until 9:30 on Friday and 11:30 on Saturday. I’m going to miss a lot of music, but should be able to catch some. OK, let’s go to the next song on Lipstick and Dynamite.

11.) The Invisibles – Black Rabbit
12.) Golden Goose – Cave Bees
13.) Righteous – Rough Francis
14.) Dead Or In Jail – Crazyhearse

All of those bands are great and playing pretty much at the same time. What’s a poor music fan to do? Oh, and Cave Bees have a guy named Creston Lea who is a great guitar player and guitar maker. Check out the video about him if you get a chance! OK, let’s keep rocking.

15.) Tic Toc – Doll Fight
16.) Imaginary – Envy
17.) Weapons Factory – The Wards
18.) Burn – The Dirty Blondes

The Blondes have been rocking town for quite a while. The Wards rocked us in the ’80;s, Envy in the ’90’s and Doll in the 00’s. Love all those songs. I miss Doll Fight. Christine moved on to Boston, I think Kelly formed Gorgon, and Jane Boxall Percussion is doing a million things, like playing with Black Rabbit, Vedora, and something new. On the walk down I noticed Orion in the sky for the first time. Winter is here. Seeing the hunter always makes me think of this song.

19.) Stylus Of Id – Somah
20.) Summer’s Gone – The Cush
21.) Words – Slingshot Dakota
22.) Next Summer Out On The Ice – Endless Jags

I love the new Jags album Sell The Banquet. I’ll likely be working when they are playing. Love Slingshot! Nice video out for The Cush song. I just got this next song before heading down to do the show. This is a piece by Raph Worrick and Jane Boxall, collectively known as Bad Smell.

23.) AV6 (?) – Bad Smell
24.) The Alchemist – Pours
25.) Einstein-Rosen Bridge – Jeremy Gilchrist

Very cool lyrics on the Jeremy song. It’s kind of fun playing some new music and as soon as I heard it, I though it would mix nicely into Pours. OK, let’s go back to the birthday party show for some more Seth.

26.) Down By The River -> Like A Hurricane – Real Old & Insane Donkey

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
