I had a great time seeing music last Wednesday at Red Square and Nectar’s. I had a nice relaxing day off and had asked my brother Ken if he wanted to go out and see Clever Girls. He was up for it, then another show popped up.
I drove to Shelburne and picked him up a little after 6 and we were downtown just before 7. We grabbed some dinner then headed over to Red Square. gneiss were on stage jamming and we got a table next to the band. They rocked the song to a nice close while singing I want to be completely free. They played a sweet Johnny Meli song called Mountain High then closed with a song about northern lights. We hung out for a bit and learned that Damian Roy (?) was sitting in on drums since Jacob Blodgett was at the hospital with his wife, who was about to deliver their first child. Gneiss opened the second set with a song about walking in the light that fell into a song about going round and round and never staying the same. Jesse Cowan had lots of cool runs up and down the bass, while still driving the rhythm. Damien was nicely locked in. Johnny sang a lot of the songs and fired off many cool lead breaks. Naomi Galimidi‘s keys helped the music soar while she added some backing vocals and sang a song or two. They said to keep on using me until you’ve used me up, then got a little bluesy for a song about too much, but it’s never enough. They debuted a song that was written by Naomi’s 7 year old that showed a lot of promise then rocked out a staggering version of Lovely Day. They sang about making me feel brand new when I return to you and dropped it into a song about a lonely lonesome highway. Their jam rock sound was delightful, but I put a 9:15 deadline on so we could make it to the other show. They put on their shades for a cool song, then we headed out.

We headed over to Nectar’s and walked in to a huge loud indie rock sound. sleeping in had a nice heavy flow that made me smile. They sang a song called Pine and played a new one called No Sentiment. I think the next two were new and ended their set. I’ve got to check them out again sometime soon.

Up next, Kal Marks unloaded a staggering rock show on us. The bass played stood to the side and locked in with the drummer, often sounding like a charging freight train. The singer/guitar player thrashed about and threw himself at his guitar and vocals. I was happily stunned from the first moment. They sang about how there’s no place for me and when I look down. One song had a hint of The Who, one had some Church like psychedelia. They played a song about being too young to die that had a cool dramatic pause then hit us hard with a couple more to end the set. They were amazing and are a band you should see anytime you get a chance.

After a brief set break, Clever Girls took the stage and rocked out a blues jam that fell into Catch and Release. Diane Jean broke a string and the guitarist for Sleeping In lent her his guitar for the rest of the night. It’s possible that they played Dumb Smile in drop D, but either way, it sounded cool. Loose Tooth rocked hard then they eased up a little for the new one about tilting your head back. They played the new swampy song called Woman and rocked it hard. Hannah Wants To See You soared and they closed with a blistering version of heavy.
We headed out fairly quickly then I drove Ken back to Shelburne, then I drove back home. It was a lovely night.

You’re Not Alone – Saga
intro
From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s been warm and cold this week. There are flowers everywhere. Burlington is filled with jazz so let’s begin tonight with some blues.
It was cool to see Matthew Bryan Hagen and Caroline Marie play everything except that song this afternoon at Red Square. Zoot rocked us in the ’70’s and Chris put out that album recently. Nice live version of Goner from the new mellower version of the admiral. Cool song form Jason. OK, let’s rock. Here is the next song on Engine.
Great song from their recent album. Wanted and Flowers went back to the ’90’s and Radio is quite new. This is a new song from a performer who will be at Shelburne Vineyard on Saturday.
I’m very excited to see the Decemberists at Shelburne Museum on Saturday. Tom will be at Red Square tomorrow. Betty will take over Nectar’s tomorrow. OK, let’s play another song from I’ll Be Your Girl.

They broke up but it’s such a cool song I want to keep playing it. Great song from Milton. Nice heavy rockers from Bull and Clever. OK, let’s switch things up a little. This next performer played on Monday and Tuesday as part of Jazzfest.

I had a great time seeing music last Saturday at The Monkey House. Christopher Larrow had come over for the weekend and we met up with Rich Haskell and headed to Winooski. We met up with Chris Rielly and Robin Chesebro Rielly and chatted for a bit. As the music began I headed to the front as Clever Girls shouted 1 2 3 4 and lit into Loose Tooth. They played a loud rocking set full of newer songs and classics. Their sound was full and rich and the volume was loud. Newer songs like Hannah just soared and classics like 45 had a slow burn that flowed into ripping guitar work. They closed with an intense rocker and I was in a happy place.
I hung out with everyone for a bit then the stage got loud and I returned. sleeping in had a lush indie rock sound. I did not know most of the songs but they were heavy and dreamy and I was in a happy place. They played some glorious music and wrapped the set with Tonight Tonight from Smashing Pumpkins.

I hung out with everyone for a bit then the stage got loud as Apartment 3 began their final show. Their indie punk sound was pretty cool and rocked hard. Again, I was not overly familiar with their songs, and the sound was loud and the vocals buried a bit so it was hard to be certain which songs they played. They were all fun and the epic 21 song set was fantastic, and included a couple of Pavement covers. They closed the night with the last song from their album Paying It Forward and that was that.
By this point everyone else had taken off so I took the lovely long walk home. I’m so glad I got to see such powerful music.

Song before: Cover Me – Bruce Springsteen
intro
From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I hope everyone had a nice Halloween and tomorrow is my mother’s birthday so Happy Birthday Mom! Let’s begin with a local musician who just released an album called Other Side Of The Rain.
I just love that song by Aaron. He is talented and wonderful and writes such lovely songs. The Andriana song is inspired by the shortening days and lengthening nights. I want to thank Ben and Robin for getting in touch and letting me know about their new music so I can play it for you. Great stuff. OK, last night I went to Phoenix Books Essex & Burlington and saw performances by Swale and Mark Daly, but the main event was Ray Padgett and Brent Hallenbeck talking about Ray’s new book about cover songs. It’s called Cover Me and it was fascinating to hear stories of why rock bands choose to cover other bands songs. This next set was inspired by that discussion.
Broccoli played in the late ’80’s and did a great rocking version of the classic. Casey Merlin Rae also records as The Contrarian and put out a whole EP of Blue Oyster Cult songs in honor of Sandy Pearlman. Ray mentioned Dizzy as one of the great local cover songs so I had to include that one. Ninja began with a few really cool originals but always played lots of covers to fill out long sets at Nectar’s like that REM song. Bridget play all covers but in their own wonderful way. OK, let’s play the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. It’s a cover too.
I recently came up with the idea of putting Frequency and Shock back to back so I hope you enjoyed that. The version of Shock was from the Robot Dog Studio studio session they did when they were in town in October. Great song by Death. Nice surf version of the Sabbath song. Ryan Cohen has been releasing the Live At Robot Dog performances and interviews as a podcast. He just released the one from Clever Girls. Here is a song from that session. They played a rocking version of it last Saturday at The Monkey House.
Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo played an amazing show at ArtsRiot last night. That is the title song from his new album. Girls, Sleeping, and Apartment played a great show last week at the Monkey House. That was Apartment 3’s last show. Thanks for the music. Speaking about being thankful for the music, Swale opened the show for Ranaldo with this song.
Lee played a super fun version of that song last night. It’s just a couple of days after Halloween so I had to play a couple of skeleton songs. I caught Uncle a few weeks back and it’s about time I got some of their music on the air. Anne-Marie has such a wonderful voice. So does Amanda Gustafson! OK, let’s play one more Lee song.
22.) Moroccan Mountains – Lee Ranaldo
23.) The Light – Kat Wright
24.) I’ve Been Down – Bob Wagner
25.) Ricky The Rider – The Mountain Says No
OK, it’s time to start rocking hard and what better way to start than with Ricky. Great cover song from the amazing Bob Wagner. I love that Kat song. The Lee set last night was just stunning. OK, crank up the volume to 11.
26.) Jackbooted Thugs (Have All The Best Drugs) – Anders Parker
27.) Drug Laws – Swale
28.) Mr Reed (live) – Seth Yacovone Band
All of those songs rock so hard! Thanks everyone. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
