intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin tonight with the title song from one of Burlington’s coolest artists. He’s moved away, but still comes back to play now and then.

1.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass
2.) As Glass – Wren Kitz
3.) Soul Piggy Bank – Swale
4.) This Land Is Your Land – VT Artists

It’s so cool that so many local artists got together to record this song as a boost to the candidacy of Bernie Sanders. It features Kat Wright, Bob Wagner, Marie Claire Johnson, and lots of others. Swale played a great show at Light Club Lamp Shop last Saturday and did a great version of that one. That’s a new song from Wren’s just released album For Evelyn. Great song from Gregory. I just ran into Abbie Gail since she just finished a US tour and arrived back in Burlington. Her band, Abbie Morin, will be at Nectar’s on Saturday. Here’s a live song from the road.

5.) Barstools – Abbie Morin
6.) Barstool Blues – Seth Yacavone Band
7.) The Call – Swillbillie
8.) Constant Disaster (live) – When Particles Collide

That’s a live version from Particles new album Live At The Sinclair. Great stuff from the rocking duo who will be on the road soon. Great song from a local band I have not yet caught. Seth did such a great job with the Neil Young songs at the WBKM birthday party last year. It’s cool to have a recording of that. Great song from Abbie. It’s time for the next song on Red Flannel Hash. I held off playing the album so I could start it so that this song would be appropriate. It’s chilly tonight, was 55 on Tuesday, was -13 (or so) on Saturday. It will be in the 40’s for the weekend. Well, for tonight this song is mostly true.

9.) It’s Cold – Black Rabbit
10.) Still Life Scene – Envy
11.) Ornan’s Song – Dirty Blondes
12.) Endless Parts 1 & 2 – Elephants Of Scotland

What great versions of those Elephants songs. Those are from the live at Gettysburg album. The whole band is great, but how about the drumming and chime playing from Ornan McLean? Ornan is going through a tough time sine he lost his mother a couple of days ago and today is his birthday. I had to play a chunk of Elephants for him and had to play the song about him from one of his other bands. Best of luck and heal as soon as you can Ornan! Sean and Ann Mindell from Envy will be at Radio Bean next Wednesday in their new band The Nancy Druids. Great song from Rabbit. Last week I missed the Mountain Says No at the Monkey House, but just because I slacked, doesn’t mean you have to miss them.

13.) JC And The Beast – The Mountain Says No
14.) Teenage Mother Earth – The Red Telephone
15.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates
16.) The Crisis – Ninja Custodian

Killer song from Ninja. Great song from Phil from before he became affiliated. Great songs from Telephone and Mountain. This next song is about a crisis in America that necessitates the phrase Black Lives Matter.

17.) Blind Pigs – Rough Francis
18.) The Eldridge – Cameo Harlot
19.) Captain 20 – Barbacoa
20.) The Territory – Hana Zara

Great song from Hana’s 2015 album The North. Cool rocker from Barbacoa. Cameo were a great band that featured Paul Comegno on guitar and vocals. Now he is just playing guitar with Rough Francis. OK, let’s take the energy down a bit with a cool song.

21.) The Alchemist – Pours
22.) All Your Basis – Invisible Homes
23.) Kids – Wren Kitz
24.) Doris – Wren Kitz

Those last two are the closing songs and pieces of effects from Wren’s new album For Evelyn. Cool new song from Homes. Now, how will Sean Witters pull that one off live? Fun song from Pours. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Delirious – The Church Band

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Over the Christmas holiday I’ve been thinking a lot about the peace on earth good will towards people idea. We’ve made many strides but are still a long way off. This first song is a nice image of where we could end up if we work hard to wage peace.

1.) Happy Xmas (War is Over) – Joshua Glass Music
2.) Presence – Satori Bob
3.) Happy New Year – Ninja Custodian
4.) Basalt Anchor – Vedora

Love the sultry feel to the voice and music in that song, and the guitar playing is beautiful too! Can’t wait to see them more in this coming year with Jane Boxall Percussion on drums. Happy New Year has a nice sentiment on the surface but is about a terrible chemical spill in Bhopal. If humankind works together maybe we can stop having tragedies like that. Presence is a song about lighting up your inner poet and stepping away from materialism. I hope you enjoyed the holiday season. Does anyone know if The Mountain Says No ever got their Christmas sled?

5.) Christmas Sled – The Mountain Says No
6.) Cowgirl In The Sand – The Seth Yacovone Band

Killer version of the Neil Young song performed live at Nectar’s as part of the WBKM birthday party last November. Mountain are playing Saturday at The Monkey House with Black Rabbit and Dino Bravo VT. OK, let’s go on to the next song on Many Things and Many Scenes.

7.) Shoreline In Jersey – Joe Adler
8.) Old Souls Of Chatham County – Jeremy Gilchrist
9.) The Globe – Landlady

I still vividly remember the Landlady show at Signal Kitchen earlier this year. Someone can bring them back anytime!! Great new song from Jeremy. He was one of the many performers who played at First Night Burlington this year. It was great to see Joe play some new songs last Tuesday at Radio Bean. One of the ways I learn about music is to read the column by Seven Days music writer Dan Bolles then show up and see if I like the band. He is doing a list of the top local music singles of 2014. Here are a few of his picks.

10.) Unveiled – Pours
11.) Give Me All Your Love – Madaila
12/) Until It All Ends – Waylon Speed

Yup, he was right. Those are all pretty cool songs. This next song is on the list too, and this band played a killer show Tuesday at Nectar’s.

13.) Popular Crowd – Swale
14.) Searching To Destroy – Kiki’s Lost Nation
15.) Weapons Factory – The Wards

The Wards are down to a three-piece but played a smoking show at Radio Bean last Sunday. Lost Nation opened but Aurora sang instead of Kiki. Either way, they opened with a killer version of Searching. Here’s some music I got this morning. It’s Luke Awtry from Vetica‘s new band.

16.) Womb With A View – Heavy Plains
17.) Things Change – Black Rabbit
18.) A Different Machine (live) – Elephants of Scotland

Elephants have released the show they played in Gettysburg at Rosfest, a progressive rock festival. They are also playing Montreal in April at one of the Marillion weekend side events. I am so there! Can’t wait to see Rabbit in a couple of days. This next guy has been waging peace since his days as Mayor of Burlington. He made this album back in 1987 and is still standing up for the same things.

19.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont Artists
20.) Buttonz – Binger

Binger seem to be working towards the peace on earth idea and I thought their words would stand favorably with Bernie’s. I think they are playing Red Square tomorrow. OK, I’m almost out of time so let’s head back to Gettysburg for one more song.

21.) Endless (Pt 2) – Elephants Of Scotland.

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from radio show 17 on WBKM.ORG.  It felt really smooth, like everything was in place.  I felt like the arc from the blues, into Black Sea Quartet, into the rock, then back to the blues, flowed right.  I was dancing like a fool to most of the songs, had the windows open, and the sound cranked.

Song before: A Day in the Life/Give Peace A Chance – Paul McCartney

Intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington.  Even though the rain has stopped and the sun is out, I’ve got the blues, and the cure.  This is Big Joe Burrell on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Every Time I Hear That Mellow Saxophone – Big Joe Burrell and the Unknown Blues Band

2.) The Mechanic – Blues for Breakfast

3.) The Red Army Liberates North Winooski Ave – Black Sea Quartet

Said I never met Mike Deutsch, but saw him play a few times, and he was good.  It was sad to learn that he passed away at 41 years old.  Talked about knowing Mr Charlie for years and having tons of respect for him.  He and Blues for Breakfast play often.  Talked about how Joe moved to town and taught us how to play the blues.  Talked about the statue for him on Church st.  Said it’s time to check out the next song on New Appreciation For Sunshine.

4.) Distance – The Cush

5.) Mary – Plan B

6.) American Proxy – The Hero Cycle

The Hero Cycle sound like pure joy to me, and I was dancing around the studio.  One of the fun things about this gig, is pulling out old CD’s and listening.  OMG, how did I not remember the song Mary.  The Cush, a slice of sonic heaven.  Tomorrow Thompson Gunner are going to play at Nectar’s

7.) The Rutland Song – Thompson Gunner

8.) Sunny Side of the Couch – The Lestons

9.) Wall To Wall – The Lava’s

The Austin sisters have made great music in this town for a long time.  Pulled out the Lestons CD today, and loved this song.  May have to go see Thompson tomorrow.  Last Saturday I saw Cave Bees, Parmaga, Black Rabbit, and a band play the Pixie’s album Doolittle.  The band was Bobby Hackney jr from Rough Francis, Caroline O’Connor, and from Blue Button, James Belizia, Jason Cooley, and Eric Olsen, and what a tremendous job they did playing those complex songs.  Last night, I went out to see Persian Claws and Barbacoa.  The first band on, Violette Ultraviolet were really good too.

10.) Confession – Violette Ultraviolet

11.) Bobfred – Seth Yacovone Blues Band

Seth is another local legend, always playing out.  I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town.  Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
