I had a great time seeing music in our community tonight. I worked a 9-5:30 shift then drove straight to Essex. As I walked up through the parking lot I could hear Troy Millette Music and Bethany Conner Music singing together. I got in and settled and Bethany left the stage and Troy continued his set. He told a story about truckers listening to his music and how the next song was #18 on an overnight long haul country station. Ghosts sounded great as he contemplated what was waiting on the other side after he died. He plugged his upcoming August 17th album release and said he would be opening for Live and Counting Crows the next day. His version of Round Here was unique and poignant. His in-between song banter was top shelf as he played a song called Brothers, which will be the first song on his upcoming album. He asked if we wanted a Beatles song or a mashup. Mashup won and he played a bunch of songs I did not know, but sounded vaguely familiar. I think he said there was some Taylor Swift in there and at he end had us let our inner Whitney Houston out. He closed the night with the first few verses of Freebird then dropped it into Let It Be. He is such a wonderful talent.

Bethany took the stage to a noisy food and drink ordering patio bar and fiercely cut through it with her songs. She played a song about being twisted and one about doing laundry for the first song and wondering if she was ever going to be able to make it through life. Her dad, Greg Conner joined her on the cajon on that one, and several others during the set. She played a heartfelt version of Linger then asked when you’re going to come around, you’re going to come around. Jumper was cool then she played a song from her upcoming EP. Believe in me like I believe in you was just great and had a nicely complex rhythm. Ho Hey was familiar and fun then she played a song about regretting nothing. She sang about colliding and how I love you when you’re singing that song. She reminisced about feeling like she would be anything you wanted her to be, but it had an eye to the future where that is not the ideal. Drops of Jupiter was cool and the Drift Away ending only made it more fun. Wonderwall was fun then she played a sweet old original called Josie. The A Team was fun then she went back to Train for Soul Sister. She played a very gentle version of Landslide then played an original about how she has seen the end and everything will be OK. A new song called Anchor was stunning then she sang about the one that got away. She sang about knowing what lay at the end of summer and not wanting it to end then played a cool song called Perfect. She played a short song from her first ep about sweet dreams and closed the 24 song set with Ex’s And Oh’s. I loved her new songs, her powerhouse voice, and can’t wait for the next album.

I drove home, did a quick turnaround, then took the walk downtown to Bleu Northeast Seafood. Julia Beerworth and Josh Glass were on stage as I got in and settled. They were singing about how everything is about you. What’s In California lit me up hard then they followed with Here Comes The Sun. They played a sweet Julia song about a House On A Hill then closed the set with Dylan’s Oh, Sister. I chatted with Josh for a bit in the break and settled back in as he played a cool new song called Miles Above Me. Julia returned for a song about getting rich and buying our parent’s houses. Dylan’s I Want You was great but their version of One More Cup Of Coffee sent chills down my spine. They played another Julia song about an old Oak Tree, then played Angel From Montgomery. I thought they were kidding about playing some Zeppelin but Tangerine was sweet. It was getting late so I ducked out the door as they played Let It Bleed into Honky Tonk woman. They sounded so nice.

I walked over to Finnegan’s and it was just about time for The Mountain Says No to play. They opened hard and heavy with Restaurant then released the glory of King Grifter. I Know Right rocked hard and Iron And Metal kept the glory factor high. Right Bright Lord was searing and Eggshell rocked hard. They throttled back a tiny amount for 3,000 Incubators then jammed out Ricky The Rider. They took us to incredible heights with Machu Picchu and eased back into searing territory with If You Lie. Gazerbeam started slow and had a nice build and they closed with a blistering version of The Bomb. It was so great to see and hear them.

Savage Hen followed with a set so heavy most metal became instantly jealous. They played songs such as Voodoo Revenge and Alabama Swamp Skin. They sang about seats that were taken and a clever girl. They took us to the edge of the world then spoke of Local Lore. They played a long song about the wolf and a 36 second song called Curtain Call. They hit us hard with one more before calling it a night.

I ducked out quickly and took the lovely walk home. I know I missed a ton of music tonight, but I caught a lot and loved it all.

5.) Hungry Like The Wolf – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger with The Lynguistic Civilians

That was recorded live at Nectar’s a couple of years ago. That’s a new song from James and has all of those Duran Duran references. Such a fun song from the new Chris Alley album. He used to play guitar with The Wards. Francis are so amazing. OK, here is the next song on Black, Blue, and White.

The Girls will play on the 27th at Radio Bean with Julia Caesar, who I’ve been meaning to catch, and others. The Druids will play The Monkey House on the 27. Francesca will be at ArtsRiot that night with the DuPont brothers new band. Sigh, there’s still only one of me. So, last year I developed a live in the studio music series with Ryan Cohen and Robot Dog Studio. Yesterday we released a free album with one song and one interview clip from each of the 16 bands that we recorded. The Andriana, Druids, and Clever Girls songs were from that. Song before Happy X-Mas (War Is Over) – Joshua Glass Music

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Yesterday I bought a cool Christmas gift from an amazing local musician so I thought I should begin with some of his music.

1.) The Positives Of Ten Degrees – The DuPont Brothers
2.) The Toy – Hana Zara
3.) Hallelujah – SWALE
4.) Black 17 – The New Siberians

That’s another great song from Black, Blue, And White, the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. What a fun version of that song by Swale. I thought Toy would be a seasonally appropriate Hana song, even if the subject is a little different. It was nice chatting with you yesterday Sam. OK, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for the last interview and live performance on my radio show this year.

5.) Car Bomb – Zeus Springsteen
6.) Signal Loss – Zeus Springsteen
7.) I’ll Find You Dindone Fontaine – Zeus Springsteen
8.) What’s Inside A Thing – Zeus Springsteen

Thanks so much Zeus for rocking so hard and Ryan Cohen for making us sound great. We did 16 of the live at Robot Dog shows this year and I hope you have enjoyed getting a small taste of the live music scene in Burlington. I’ve already got a couple of bands lined up in early 2017, and a cool announcement on the way. OK, it’s winter and beginning to get cold.

9.) Cold – Seth Yacovone Band
11.) It’s Cold – Black Rabbit
12.) The Wrong List – Savage Hen
13.) Christmas Sled – The Mountain Says No

Great song from a rocking band who are amazing live. See you in January! Such a fun Christmas song from Hen. That was recorded earlier this year at Robot Dog. Nice seasonally appropriate songs from Seth and Rabbit. OK, here is a fun version of a classic.

14.) Funky Little Drummer Boy – Soule Monde (Ray Paczkowski & Russ Lawton)
15.) Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot
16.) When The Nights Get Long – Carraway
17.) Just Another Day (Christmas) – Swale

Another great holiday song from Swale. They will play a show at Light Club Lamp Shop on Saturday which should be really fun. The Carraway and Andriana songs sound like what it feels like on the longest night of the year. This song has that feel too.

18.) The Mountain Carol – The Mountain Carol
19.) The Last Carol – The Cush
20.) It’s Christmas – Swale
21.) The Bells of Electric Haloland – Electric Halo
22.) Winter Serenade – Electric Halo

Halo are on of Joe Adler‘s many projects and sounds so great at this time of year. Another great song from Swale, who will play the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts on New Year’s Eve. That song from The Cush just warms my heart. OK, here’s another cool Swale song.

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM.ORG will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and can be streamed here: WBKM It will go as follows.

Song before: It Was A Very Good Year – Frank Sinatra

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last night I went to Radio Bean and saw a wonderful performance by this band.

1.) By Design – The Nancy Druids
2.) Totally Submerged – Totally Submerged
3.) Paranoid – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
4.) Drivin’ All Alone – The Parts

We’ll skip the Parts for a moment. That’s the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song. Great work making that Sabbath song sound like Surf rock. Cool song form Submerged who play all over Vermont all the time. The Druids played a beautiful version of that song last night. So, last Saturday was Radio Bean’s 17th birthday party and they did the usual thing where 80 or 90 bands played from 8am to 2am with 15 minute sets. The Parts kicked off the show. Most of the rest of the show is made of a few of the many bands who played.

5.) Every Time We Say Goodbye – Tiffany Pfeiffer and The Discarnate Band
6.) Faded Movie Reel – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
7.) The Birds Of Park Slope – Eastern Mountain Time
8.) My Old House – Andriana Chobot

Most of those bands played early in the day. This next set is a mix of bands who played early and later.

9.) True Hue – Ivamae
10.) Angela Carter – Cricket Blue
11.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
12.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget

Silver Bridget opened their set with a little bit of (When I Was Just Seventeen) It Was A Very Good Year then dropped it into Paint It Black. It was great. I missed Cricket and Milton but assume their sets were amazing. Ivamae was great and played a couple of new songs. This next band gave us a choice of this song or one that I did not know. They played the latter so I will play this song that they did not.

13.) Paper Doll – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
14.) Heat Sleep – Ryan Power
15.) Californ-i-A – Ryan Ober
16.) Gonna Stay Up All Night Long – Eames Brothers Band

I missed Eames and the two Ryans when I was in the other room seeing other bands but did catch the full Gators set. I just barely missed this next artist.

17.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
18.) Come Dance – Kat Wright
19.) Strings – Binger
20.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger

Joe and the Rangers put on a brilliant set. I want to send that out to my brother Ken and all of my brothers and sisters, ie you. Great songs from Binger, Kat, and Francesca. So, when Swale played they did mostly covers and opened with Amanda Gustafson singing the heck out of this song.

21.) Rebel Girl – Bikini Kill
22.) Popular Crowd – SWALE
23.) Trans Am – Barbacoa
24.) Juliet – Cave Bees

The Bees played a powerhouse version of that song. The tiny amount of Barbacoa that I caught was brilliant. If you listen to Popular and imagine that band singing Rebel you will have an idea of how Swale’s set started. This next band played an amazing version of this one.

25.) Destroying Everything They See – Blue Button
26.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
27.) Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT
28.) Purple Rain – Prince

On Saturday WBKM is turning 10 years old and celebrating at Nectar’s. Seth Yacovone will be there, Aaron Flinn will be there, The Full Cleveland will be there and a bunch of local artists will play Prince songs and be lead by Craig Mitchell. I hope you can stop by. Dino finished off the Bean birthday party. Hen played in the afternoon and Button were as amazing as always. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

29.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

outro

Songs after
