intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to begin by thanking Higher Ground for sponsoring us here at WBKM. There are a ton of bands playing around tonight and over the weekend. Let’s begin with a singer who is playing a show at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center in Stowe on Saturday.

1.) Le Blues – Francesca Blanchard
2.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
3.) Mon Ange – Francesca Blanchard

Francesca will also play on Tuesday at Signal Kitchen so there are lots of ways to experience her music this week. This next singer will return to Radio Bean on Sunday.

4.) Vulture – Rorie Kelly
5.) Clocks On The Wall – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
6.) Sunbeam – Split Tongue Crow
7.) The Worst Part – Bethany Conner Music

Bethany played a tremendous show at Light Club Lamp Shop on Tuesday and I’m so glad I was there. Cool song from the Rutland band. I love that Jeremy Gilchrist song. He will be at Radio Bean on Sunday too. OK, let’s play the next song from Song For My Double.

8.) This Machine – Invisible Homes
9.) Phones – Violet Ultraviolet
10.) Arkansas Sheriff – Lake Superior
11.) Circle K – The New Siberians

Another great new song from the Siberians Black, Blue and White album. Cool rocker from LS. Cool new song from VU’s new Pop City album. I love that Woody Guthrie reference. This next singer is at Light Club Lamp Shop tonight.

12.) Dogs At The Door – Milton Busker
13.) Gettin High – Heavy Plains
14.) MSP2 – ROUGH FRANCIS
15.) Politicians In My Eyes – Death World Wide

Death played a show that was live on Facebook earlier today. They just played DC with Francis. This song makes me think of the debate on Monday where there was a Presidential candidate and some guy who kept saying look at me. Please choose wisely when voting. Francis played at Higher Ground tonight. Plains were at The Monkey House tonight. I should have been at all of those shows, and doing this radio show. That Milton song seemed a little appropriate tonight. This next band are at Foam Brewers tomorrow.

16.) Trans Am – Barbacoa
17.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks
18.) Round Sum – Cave Bees
19.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons
20.) Popular Crowd – SWALE

That was a fun rocking set with a little life commentary from Bill. This next set has a theme. Any guesses?

21.) Shooting Starlight – Rue M.
22.) Dora Marr – Queen Tangerine
23.) Star – The New Siberians
24.) Under Bright Stars – Alice Austin

Great songs from Alice and a cool song from the Siberians first album. Rue will be playing the election night party in November. This next singer just posted a cool old video from 1991. We rocked a lot back then too.

25.) Naked Garden – Peg Tassey MUSIC
26.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
27.) Way Down Hadestown – Anais Mitchell
28.) Basalt Anchor – Vedora

Great song from Caroline Marie. Anais is at Higher Ground tomorrow. Classic rock from the first two. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? See ya, ta ta….

Tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM from 9-11pm US Eastern time will go as follows:

Song before: Russian Autumn Heart – The Church Band

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Jazzfest kicks off tomorrow in Burlington, so I’ve got a bit of jazz lined up, but the main part of the show will be to go deeper into the albums of a few bands I’ve been playing recently. It seems like I have played one song by a bunch of bands and said that I would have to check them out more. We will do that tonight. However, considering the date, I have to begin with a different song. Today is the second of June, so let’s begin with this:

1.) Last Day Of May – The Red Telephone
2.) Farside – Villanelles
3.) Sometime Next Year – 1881
4.) The Blackout – The Static Age

I love that song by Static and just have to pull it out and play now and then. Another cool song from 1881. I may have to check them out live sometime soon. Great song from Villanelles new album Blue Heart Attack, which had a great write up in Seven Days this week. Great song from Telephone. OK, here is the next song on Callisto.

5.) Flicker Flutter – Alpenglow
6.) Break – Slingshot Dakota
7.) Empty Frequency – Rue M. (Rue Mevlana)
8.) Last Love – Myra Flynn Music

Myra will kick off Jazzfest at The Skinny Pancake on Friday. I just love the energy that Rue put into a song and a show. Another gorgeous song from Slingshot. If you hadn’t noticed, I played their entire Break album song for song for the last 9 weeks. Break is the last song on the album. Flicker is the second to last song on Callisto. I will play the last one next week, then start another album the week after that. OK, it’s Jazzfest. Let’s play some jazz.

9.) NoRoomForSquares – Sneakers Jazz Band
10.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass
11.) Now That You Are Gone – Francesca Blanchard

Another great song from Francesca’s deux visions album. Great song from Gregory. So many great jazz players used to play at Sneakers. This next song is a great song that I do not play often enough.

12.) What’s In California? – Joshua Glass Music
13.) Who’s Fault Was That? – The Snaz
14.) Barstool Blues – Seth Yacovone Band
15.) Freeway – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

Great song from David and the band. Killer cover of the Neil Young song from Seth. The Snaz just rock. I love the Josh song. OK, Let’s play a song from Vetica from an album they put out after breaking up. This is a song from the Songs In The Key Of V album.

16.) Distance – Vetica
17.) Green Apple Girl – Dave Jarvis
18.) Blue Lights – Sink or Swim
19.) Mush – Phantom Suns

Great rocker from Phantom. I have to get out and catch them soon. Same for Sink. I love that Dave song from the ’90’s. I miss Vetica. OK, let’s let the music get a little scary for a while.

20.) Devil Knows My Name – Great Western
21.) Raising The Dead – Carraway
22.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates

Such a fun song from Phil. Great song from Carraway. Same for Western. Here is a new song from a band I’ve been meaning to check out more.

23.) Sunshine – Apartment 3
24.) High Water Mark – The Pants

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Despite a super warm December, winter has pretty much set in. Let’s begin with some local songs about the cold time of year.

1.) Winter – Dave Jarvis
2.) Christmas Sled – The Mountain Says No
3.) Stylus Of Id – Somah
4.) Northern Memory – The Cush

Such great cold imagery from the Texas band who spent many winters playing lovely music for us. Thanks Cush!! Stylus is all about Orion who appears in the sky in winter. That sled that you got for Christmas, but couldn’t use at the time, well now there is lots of snow and cold, so have at it. Nice song from Dave. It’s a bit of a mellow evening in Burlington, so let’s go with that vibe for a bit.

5.) Good Thing – Maryse Smith
6.) The Night Syd Barrett Died – Colin Nicholas Clary
7.) Eve & Adam – Cricket Blue
8.) Afterlife – Hana Zara

Great song from Hana about living in the space between two lives. Great song from Cricket who are playing shows all over. I love all the local references in Syd. Super strong song from Maryse Smith. Let’s keep the mellow but strong vibe going for a bit.

9.) Letter From The 21st – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
10.) New York My Lovely – Joshua Glass Music
11.) I’ve Been Down – Bob Wagner
12.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band

Such a great song from Kat Wright and the band. Hopefully they will have new music soon. Nice cover done by a killer guitar player and a driving force behind Dark Side of the Mountain, who are playing in Stowe soon. If you like the Josh song check out his band Sammich. Great song from Jeremy Gilchrist. Tomorrow night at Radio Bean Barbacoa will be the backing band for a bunch of local artists playing David Bowie songs. I don’t know if anyone in this next band will be part of it, but they did release this song this week.

13.) Starman – Madaila
14.) Freak Out Friday – Rue Mevlana
15.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
16.) Melt – Chin Ho

Nice cover song from Ho. I thought it would be fun to bookend that set with the covers and stick a couple of new and old classics in between. This next set is for the optimists of the world.

17.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont musicians
18.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
19.) Sequoia 3 – Binger
20.) In The Garden Of Mystic Lovers – Francis Dunnery

Francis is from Scotland but he lived in Vermont for a while around the time he released the album Man. He played Mystic and other song from the album often at Club Metronome. I just love the sentiment from Binger, and the rock. Great words from Bill and Bernie. OK, let’s take a swing through some ’90’s classics.

21.) On My Way – Hover
22.) Finder – Madelines
23.) Bloodboy – Envy
24.) Help Wanted – Wide Wail

Absolute classic from Wail. Great rocker from Envy. Finder is such a fun song with a great riff. I just love the Hover song. This next song is one that has always spoken to me. This is one of the coolest bands to ever play JP’s.

25.) Chester Allen – The World Famous Hanglows.

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week. I’ll say goodbye with the next song on Red Flannel Hash.

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s been a super warm, maybe in the 70’s, day and it’s warm this evening. A lot of people are out and about and enjoying the night. Today is the 5th of November, the day Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament. As we have evolved over the years, there is less of a need for such drastic action. In fact, all we have to do is elect reasonable and compassionate and smart people, and we could have a great government. Maybe one day. Tonight, let’s begin with Burlington itself. It was founded in 1865 and was a major lumber mill port that brought wood from Quebec to the eastern US. Early on, it was called the Queen City of New England. Let’s begin with some Burlington music about queens.

1.) Rock ‘n Roll Queen – Peg Tassey MUSIC
2.) We Rock Out 2 Queen – Rue Mevlana
3.) Queen Of Hostility – Doll Fight
4.) I’d Hate To Be Me – Queen Tangerine

Some of the regal music from Burlington. It’s interesting to see how we have evolved. We began by needing a strong leader, and have moved to a system were we can govern ourselves more and more. If we are cool about it, we have a lot of potential. OK, last Friday I caught a ton of cool music. I started with this band, although the set I caught was them covering the Elvis Costello album Blood and Chocolate. This is the next song from No Need To Beg.

5.) Drinking For Two – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
6.) I Forgot – Maryse Smith
7.) Singing – Arc Iris
8.) King Grifter – The Mountain Says No
9.) I Think I’m Turning Into A Robot – Wave of the Future

I began the night at The Skinny Pancake to see Phil’s first set, then hustled to Light Club Lamp Shop to catch Maryse Smith‘s stunning set. Arc Iris followed and were amazing as always. I hustled over to Finnegan’s and missed Mountain, but caught some of Wave’s wonderful set, including that fun song. There’s a fun show at Finnegan’s tomorrow with some of the guys in Rough Francis playing as Aspero Siacos, and a couple of other cool bands, like this one.

10.) Hungry – Heavy Plains
11.) Destroying Everything They See – Blue Button
12.) MSP2 – ROUGH FRANCIS

It will be interesting to see what AS sound like, but other two will certainly be killer. Saturday is the day Radio Bean has it’s birthday. As always they will have bands play from 8am to 2am, with about 15 minutes per band. This next band always kick it off.

13.) Chuck Berry – Dino Bravo VT
14.) Toejam – The Toes
15.) The Mime – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
16.) One More Sunset – Violet Ultraviolette

I’m psyched to see all of those bands play. I’m psyched to see these next ones too.

17.) ComeTooLate – Paper Castles
18.) Gonna Stay Up All Night Long – The Eames Brothers
19.) Pauses – Lowell Thompson and Crown Pilot
20.) Crow King – Binger

I’m sorry I missed Binger playing the Scooby Doo show last weekend but am psyched to catch up with them this Saturday. All of those bands rocked, but there will be a lot of music played that day. Here are some of the mellower bands that will play.

21.) Guitar – Michael Chorney and Hollar General
22.) Windy Pines – Kat Wright and Brett Hughes
23.) Matter Of Time – Eric George
24.) Puff The Magic Dragon – Linda Bassick

I’m not sure if Linda is playing kids songs or older people’s songs or both, but it will be fun to find out. I may have to catch Eric for the first time. Kat and Brett always sound nice. Sweet song from Michael. This next song is by Caroline Marie, who has played every Bean Birthday.

25.) Once Upon – Vedora
26.) The Night Syd Barret Died – Colin Nicholas Clary
27.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
28.) The Next Instead – Swale

I’m thoroughly excited to see Swale already, is it Saturday yet?. Kat and the band are always great. I finally got the see Emily play joke in Barret. I bet he plays that one, what with the Radio Bean references and all. Killer song from Caroline. Songs 13 to 28 are just a tiny hint of what that day will sound like. Is it Saturday yet??? OK, let’s end where we began, with another song from the Queen herself, then I will say goodbye.

29.) I Remember/The Jam – Peg Tassey
30.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

5.) Sound Island – Vows
6.) Wiser – And The Kids
7.) What’s In California? – Joshua Glass Music

8.) The Singing Of The Song – Seth Yacovone Band
9.) Release The Beast – The Mountain Says No
10.) Silver And Gold – Waylon Speed!

11.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
12.) Alienation – Black Rabbit
13.) Still Life Scene – Envy
14.) Womb With A View – Heavy Plains

16.) A Place Both Wonderful And Strange – Vultures of Cult
17.) Christmas In Afghanistan – The Wards
18.) Green Peaks/Dark Valleys – Get A Grip
19.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service

Doom and Grip are playing at Higher Ground Sunday as part of Colin’s Roar a benefit for Cystic FIbrosis. Killer song from the Wards and still unfortunately appropriate. Cool song from Vulture and great song from Francis. This next set is about our understanding of God or the Gods.

20.) These Stories – When Particles Collide
21.) Hermaphroditus – Rue Mevlana
22.) Dear God – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band

One song about asking God to help you get out of something and a couple about the ancient Greeks and others. Big Joe passed away 10 years ago and in a couple of weeks the Unknown Blues Band will play a show in his honor.

23.) Every Time I hear That Mellow Saxophone – Big Joe Burrell & The Unknown Blues Band
24.) Jan Michael Vincent – Chin Ho
25.) All My Life – Wide Wail

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a crisp Autumn night, it’s cold if you are standing, but not bad if you are moving. This week a wonderful local musician named Samara Lark Brown lost her mom. Please send her lots of loving energy as she spends time with her family. It seems like there have been lots of sad events lately, and wonderful events lately. We are spirits condensed and incarnated for a finite amount of time. As you go through joy and pain, be sure to not bottle it up. Feel it and let it out, so your friends and family can help you. The healing process seems to have times of pain and times that are more bearable. This first song deals with the waves of emotion that keep on coming. This is In Waves by Sarah Blacker on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) In Waves – Sarah Blacker
2.) Like Beads – Anachronist
3.) 1.21 Jigawatts – Wave of the Future
4.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler

That beautiful song goes out to Samara. That’s her singing and Johnnie Day Durand on saw. It was so great seeing Joe and Johnnie at Radio Bean on Tuesday. Samara also sings with Wave, who may have a show coming up in the near future. What a stunning song by Anachronist! Nicely explained Sarah. OK, let’s play the next song from No Need To Beg.

5.) I Am A Hatchet – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
6.) You’re Safe With Us – Lendway
7.) Powder – The New Siberians
8.) How Sweet It Is – Linda Bassick

Another great song from Linda Bassick‘s Friday Morning Sing Along album. Great song from the Siberians first album. Can’t wait for the next one. Lovely song from Lendway. I saw 3 of the guys at Metal Monday at Club Metronome playing surf rock as The High Breaks. It was a great rocking set. One of Phil’s affiliates, Raph Worrick is playing with Jane Boxall Percussion at Light Club Lamp Shop Saturday under the name Bad Smell. Jeremy Gilchrist is also playing that night, so it should be fun. OK, it’s late on a Thursday and almost Friday. Does anyone want to come and freak out with me?

9.) Freak Out Friday – Rue Mevlana
10.) Galactic Cannibalism – Wobblesauce
11.) Trans Am – Barbacoa
12.) Gettin High – Heavy Plains

I was just listening to Plains and that one jumped out and I wanted to play it. Killer rocker from Barbacoa. Wobble played Higher Ground last week and played a killer version of that song. When I played it last Thursday I could just hear it coming out of Friday. They mixed as well as I hoped. This next band have a new song on the Endless Bummer compilation.

13.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service
14.) Time To Save The World – Carraway
15.) Can’t Feel It – Vetica
16.) Yema – Brave The Vertigo

Killer song from their Oppenheimer Quotes Vishnu EP. One of the guys in the band is part of the Metallica tribute band playing Monday at Metronome. Love that Vetica song. I definitely need to check out Carraway again. Doom are playing next Wednesday at Finnegans with Dino Bravo VT. Let’s go back to the ’90’s with a seasonably appropriate song.

17.) October Days Club – Cancer Conspiracy
18.) Golden Goose – Cave Bees
19.) That’s That Is Is – Ninja Custodian
20.) No More Sex – Pinhead

All of those are classic Burlington songs. I just love this next song and hope you do to.

21.) Lean In – When Particles Collide
22.) Bullet – REDadmirial
23.) Mad Mary Jones – THE VACANT LOTS

The Lots started by playing in town and now play all over the world. Admiral are at Radio Bean tomorrow and I really need to check them out. Particles tour a lot. Check them out if they come to your town. I saw this next band at Metal Monday a couple of days ago and they rocked hard.

24.) Framing The Hell – Vultures of Cult
25.) Purpose And Object – The Contrarian

Killer song from Casey Merlin Rae, who used to play in lots of bands in town. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Goodbye. Au Revoir. Arrivederci, Adios.

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a beautiful night in the Queen city and there is a ton of stuff happening this weekend. Grace Potter is filling the waterfront with killer local and national bands Saturday and Sunday. It’s Pride week. The Art Hop is happening in the South End. Before I get to all the great stuff coming up, I want to mention a show I caught last week. Rue Mevlana put on a truly stunning spectacle of stage and music. They wove casual and classic stories with a hypnotic light and image show. Here is a hint of what the music was like.

1.) Hermaphroditus – Rue Mevlana
2.) Empty Frequency – Rue Mevlana
3.) Magenta Man – Rue Mevlana

That show was beyond words, which is unusual for me. OK, Grace is bringing a few national bands this weekend, but here are some wonderful local bands who will be there too.

4.) I Forgot – Maryse Smith
5.) Give Me All Your Love – Madaila
6.) Running Away From Home – The Snaz
7.) Womb With A View – Heavy Plains

Four really cool songs from four really cool bands who are all going to play great shows this weekend on the waterfront. Tomorrow at the Art Hop these bands are playing at Arts Riot and nearby.

8.) Coming Down Again – Waylon Speed
9.) See You At Eight – Villanelles
10.) Staring Out The Window – ROUGH FRANCIS
11.) Let’s Go Crazy – Prince

I saw Prince once (thanks Kevin Joseph Ryan) and he was amazing, Unfortunately, Prince is not actually playing the Art Hop. However, a bunch of local musicians, with Craig Mitchell singing, will play a show called Operation Prince. It should be a wild time. The other three are playing at Arts Riot and that will be a great time as well. A little farther down Pine st, these next three bands are playing at Zero Gravity Brewery. The singer for the first band was also part of the Rue show.

12.) Toejam – The Toes
13.) We’re Closed – Blue Button
14.) Alienation – Black Rabbit

Black Rabbit have a new drummer and are ready to rock us hard. BB rock hard too. The Toes are so delightfully quirky, and rock hard too. I’ve seen this next band several times in town and am always blown away. They are a killer rock band and two of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. I’m so psyched for their show next Wednesday at The Monkey House.

15.) Intro – Slingshot Dakota
16.) May Day – Slingshot Dakota
17.) Wave – Slingshot Dakota
18.) Grudge – Slingshot Dakota

I just saw that song on bandcamp and really liked it. Wave is a killer song from the first album. The first two are from the second. I can’t wait to see you Carly Comando and Tom Patterson!! OK, it’s time to play the last song on the stunning album JV. I guess I have to start a new album next week.

19.) Statistik – The Mountain Says No
20.) I Don’t Know How To Love Him – Jesus Christ Superstar
21.) Superstar – Jesus Christ Superstar

The Mountain Says No are playing the Art Hop on Saturday, so if you like that song, Go Check Them Out! I played the two songs from Jesus Christ Superstar in honor of my father, who died suddenly on Tuesday. That was, maybe, the only music that we both really loved. It’s hard knowing that he will never be there again, while wondering where, if anywhere, he is now. It’s been a long few days, but there have been so many wonderful people sending good thoughts that I can feel the love being sent to me and my mom and brother. I want to just play some of the music that has inspired me and made me feel love. Do not be offended if your music was not played, I’m just grasping for any lifelines that I think of. I don’t have enough time in the show to grasp even a third. I love you all for how you have helped and know we will all be there for anyone going through such a tough time. I want to start with a song from a man who’s love even radiates through social media posts. Last week I saw Joe Adler, who recently lost his father, talk about seeing a bird every time someone has died, and feeling like their soul might be in the bird. I don’t have the song Little Bird to play, so let’s start with the above mentioned, love radiating, Aaron Flinn.

22.) Scattered Birds – Aaron Flinn
23.) Dreams Elope – Joe Adler
24.) Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone – Kiki’s Lost Nation
25.) New Appreciation For Sunshine – The Cush

I want to thank you indeed. Thanks for all the kind words, all of you. Life is full of joy and pain and dad always wanted to help the downtrodden. I think this song is highly appropriate.

26.) Joyless – Swale
27.) Ornan’s Song – Dirty Blondes
28.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
29.) Today Is Tomorrow – The Red Telephone

I always got such a timeless feeling from that song. Thanks Matt Hutton. Thanks Phil Yates, and OMG thank you Raph Worrick. Thanks Rebecca Rogers, Diane Sullivan, and make sure you send lots of love to Ornan McLean and his family, because they need it too! Amanda Gustafson, Eric Olsen, you’ve been fantastic. OK, here is another song that I’ve just always loved and really want to play.

30.) Once Upon – Vedora
31.) Sequoia 2 – Binger

I just love that song too. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I always play a Fish song after my show, because I love his music and his ideas and his fantastic way of expressing them through his very intense lyrics. This week I just got an album I’ve been waiting for and just love this song. I don’t have to be up early so I can hang out a bit later tonight, so let’s go.
