intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Winter finally arrived in the last week. It’s a bit warm tonight and will warm up this weekend, but it’s nice to have some snow and a little cold. Burlington is hopping tonight as there is a Presidential candidate in town speaking at Flynn Center for the Performing Arts. There are lots of supporters and lots of protesters and lots of people peacefully participating in the process of democracy. It’s kind of a cool thing. Tonight let’s begin with some classic Burlington rock and roll.

1.) All My Life – Wide Wail
2.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
3.) Popular Crowd – Swale
4.) Lean In – When Particles Collide

I just love that song from the mighty road warrior duo. If you ever get a chance to see Particles, go. They always play a great show and play with other great bands. Killer rocker from Swale. They are playing a couple of shows this week, including doing a cover set from the Pants this weekend at ArtsRiot. They are playing as themselves Friday at The Skinny Pancake. Killer classics from Zola and Wail. OK, let’s play the next song from Red Flannel Hash.

5.) BS Passes – Black Rabbit
6.) Angels and Devils – Invisible Homes and Scott Mangan
7.) Swing The Gavel – Elephants of Scotland
8.) Into The Light – Great Western

Killer song from Western. Great brand new song from Elephants. That sounds nicely like an old Genesis song. Great unreleased song from Homes, with a little help. I just got that one and really like it. Great song from Rabbit!! This next singer just hit the road and is playing all over. She recorded this one live on the road.

9.) Barstools (Live at Otis Mountain Get Down) – Abbie Morin
10.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith
11.) The North – Hana Zara
12.) We Shall Overcome – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont musicians

It’s great to hear Bernie speak about real issues that will help people. This was recorded in the ’80’s and he is still consistent today. Local music writer for Seven Days, Dan Bolles asked several local people in the music business for top local album picks of the year, among other things. I feel fortunate that he asked my opinion. I could not decide between JV by The Mountain Says no, or Red Flannel Hash. If I had a third choice it would have been The North from Hana Zara. It’s a great song and a great album. Maryse Smith just moved to Philadelphia, but we would love to have her come back to play a show anytime. Glory is such a great song. Wow, Barstools rocked!! OK, let’s switch gears a little.

13.) The Alchemist – Pours
14.) All Your Basis – Invisible Homes
15.) Yardsale – Lendway
16.) Mirror Mirror – Joe Adler

Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger are playing Nectar’s tomorrow, so if you like that song, go check them out. I miss Lendway. Killer new song by Homes. It’s a bit odd, but it’s growing on me. Great song from Pours. This next band are playing Saturday night at the Zen Lounge.

17.) Long Term Sermon – The Mountain Says No
18.) Distance – Vetica
19.) Let’s Bury Bob – Screaming Broccoli
20.) Naomi’s Back – Fire The Cannons

Great song from one of the great rock bands that have played Burlington. Classic song from Broccoli. Vetica broke up, but just released a couple of albums of unreleased songs. Great song from Mountain. This next band put on a killer show just after midnight on New Year’s Eve at The Monkey House, and it was a great way to start 2016. I especially liked this song.

21.) Righteous – ROUGH FRANCIS
22.) Burn – The Dirty Blondes
23.) Heavy Psych – The Cush
24.) Womb With A View – Heavy Plains

Great song from Plains. They will play the Monkey House soon. Powerhouse song from the Cush. Fun rocker from the Blondes. OK, let’s go classic Burlington.

25.) Always Monica/Down At The Duck (live) – Chin Ho

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington.Last week we were in the ninety degree range, but it’s cooled off nicely this week. It’s a cool evening. It’s nice night for a light coat and a long walk. This is Overcoat by Swale on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Overcoat – Swale
2.) Ease The Burn – Sarah Blacker
3.) Better Half – Abbie Morin
4.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard

Great new song from Francesca who is making some waves. Abbie is off touring the country. Check her out if she stops by your town. I was driving around yesterday listening to In Waves and Red Flannel Hash. A lot of Sarah’s songs grabbed me, and Ease just wanted to get played tonight. Swale turned 13 last Saturday and played a show at Radio Bean with lots of cool bands. They were so good and Eric Olsen and Amanda Gustafson have been so over the top kind lately, that I want to say an extra thanks for everything, especially the music. This next singer has an album of kids music coming out soon. She plays a show every Friday morning at Radio Bean.

5.) Tell Me – Linda Bassick
6.) Marriage Song – Satori Bob
7.) Forsythia – Cricket Blue
8.) Megan’s Song – Hana Zara
9.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

A great song from a great writer and performer. I think she will be at Signal Kitchen in December. Great love her madly line in the Hana song. Cricket are making waves in town and touring too. Gorgeous song from Satori. If marriage is the ties that bind, then why do I feel so free? Yay Linda! OK, here is the next song from No Need To Beg.

10. Co-Pilot – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
11.) Garden Flower – Maryse Smith
12.) Letter From The 21st – Jeremy Gilchrist
13.) Emily – The Grift

Great song from the classic Burlington band. Great song from Jeremy. Maryse is just ridiculously good. I just love Phil’s sense of songwriting. I just got an e-mail with a new song from this band who used to play Burlington all the time.

14.) Donna – Rubblebucket Orchestra
15.) Unveiled – Pours
16.) Biological Immortality – Wren Kitz
17.) Two Sleepy Arms – Lendway

I miss Lendway. Cool weird song from Wren. Pours played the Swale birthday party too, and did a great version of that song. My brother Ken had some dental work done today, so I want to dedicate this to him.

18.) Perfect Teeth – When Particles Collide
19.) My Bitter End – Blue Button
20.) Bloodboy – Envy
21.) Asphyxia – Better Things

BT always play out and I keep missing them and really need to step up my game. They are very good. I’ve been playing a lot of new music so I though I’d toss in a classic Envy song. Killer song from BB who also played a killer set at the Swale birthday party. Particles are just a great band. This next song is a classic and I can’t believe I’ve never played it.

22.) Silver & Gold – Waylon Speed
23.) 1965 – The New Siberians
24.) We’re The Loops – The Mockingbirds
25.) Nowhere Feel Like Home – Fire The Cannons
26.) You Don’t Like Me, Do Ya? – Pinhead

Lots of classic Burlington rock in there, except for Mockingbirds who were from Rhode Island and played here once. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? OK, let’s let Black Rabbit take us out.

27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only WBKM.org. It touched on several styles of the great music we have in our town.

Songs before: Sisters – The Church Band
Wuthering Heights – Kate Bush

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to thank Eric and Tony for giving me this chance to show off how great of a music scene we have. Thanks for the megaphone.

1.) Megaphone – Joshua Glass Music
2.) One From Two – Linda Bassick
3.) 1.21 Jigawatts – Wave of the Future

Last Saturday was the Girls Rock Vermont showcase at Higher Ground. I missed the show but love the energy that gets put into helping girls learn to form bands and learn about the music business. People like Samara Lark Brown, who sings with Wave, and Linda Bassick are among the many people who make it happen every year. Josh’s daughter was one of the performers. Also, I caught a couple of songs by Linda and her other band, Steady Betty, yesterday. They sounded great at the packed restaurant on the water. OK, this next set is just for fun. It’s dedicated to all of the working people out there.

4.) I Got A Job – Maryse Smith
5.) I Need A Raise – Cave Bees
6.) Rejected – Black Rabbit
7.) I Quit – Blotto

Wow, that flowed nicely. Circle of the job life. OMG it’s so hot out. It’s been ’90’s for the last four days. Let’s go to the beach.

8.) Beach Song – Mr. Ray Fork
9.) Unveiled – Pours
10.) Ghost Train – Jerichovox (Dom Jerichovox)

Yesterday I stopped at Breakwaters for one beer with Steady Betty, went and saw Noodle and No Son Of Mine (metal bands) at Twofourtwo Main, then went over to Radio Bean and caught a lovely set by Jericho. That Pours song sounds so liquid it feels like you are in the water. OK, let’s play the next song from JV, the brilliant album from The Mountain Says No.

11.) Hard Times White Winds – The Mountain Says No
12.) Sober – Vedora
13.) Into The Light – Great Western

Western played a pretty smoking show at Manhattan Pizza and Pub last Saturday. Any chance that song they closed with will be recorded in time for my Halloween show later this year? After Western’s set, this next band followed with a killer show of their own.

14.) Burn Burn Burn – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
15.) Sexy Flowers – Peg Tassey MUSIC
16.) L.S. Dee – Dee Claw and Al Hotchkiss

Cool song from La Dee of Persian Claws fame. There are sexy flowers all over Burlington right now. OK, let’s jump back a bit for some classing Burlington.

17.) Gentle Rain – Jennifer Hartswick
18.) The Slow One – Ellen Powell
19.) Moxie & Gin – Pine Island.

Hmm, interesting mixture. All three are local legends. This next band should be one soon.

20.) Calypskango – Binger
21.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
22.) WalkingInCircles – Raq

That song just wants to make me bounce around and smile. Killer super cool song from Kat and the band. She sounded great singing with Steady Betty yesterday. If I’d had a bit more energy yesterday, after Jerichovox at the Bean I would have gone to Nectar’s to see Binger. OK, let’s rock. Here is the song I meant to play last week.

23.) Ornan’s Song – Dirty Blondes
24.) MSP2 – ROUGH FRANCIS
25.) Green Peaks Dark Valleys – Get A Grip
26.) Weapons Factory – The Wards with the Dirty Blondes

Oh yes, Burlington can really rock. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Oh, wait, I have a couple of minutes left. Sayonara.

27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It’s a beautiful night in Burlington but it has been a bit rainy and stormy in the past few days. This is the last show I’ll do this month so I have to start with this song. This is Last Day Of May by The Red Telephone on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind of Music.

1.) Last Day Of May – The Red Telephone
2.) Storm Cloud – When Particles Collide
3.) Miranda – Ninja Custodian
4.) Cats Were Born – And The Kids

Killer song from their new album. They are playing The Monkey House tomorrow. Killer classic Ninja song. Particles just released a new EP called This Town about life in Bangor Maine. It’s pretty cool. This next band are playing at the Monkey tomorrow too.

5.) Magenta Man – Rue Mevlana
6.) Exit Strategy – Rue Mevlana
7.) Futuis Eam – Vows
8.) Unveiled – Pours

I’ve caught Pours a couple of times and they are pretty cool. Vows are from NJ but have played town a couple of times and are coming back soon. That’s from their new album. I love the dramatic sweep to Rue’s songs. Let’s continue on through Swale’s album The Next Instead.

9.) Edible #2 – Swale
10.) The Same Stars – Zola Turn
11.) Oh My God – Sarah Blacker
12.) Beats Me – Satori Bob

Happy Birthday John Baumann! Great song from Sarah’s new album. Considering the imagery in the song, I had to pair it up with the Zola song. She played a killer show last Friday at The Skinny Pancake. I think I’m going to head there tomorrow to see this next artist, who has been playing there all month.

13.) Canadian Cowboy – Arc Iris
14.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow
15.) Oh Freedom – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont musicians

Bernie had a killer kickoff rally for his Presidential run at the waterfront in Burlington Tuesday. I had to work but was inspired by watching the speech on C-Span. Run Bernie Run. Killer song from Rutland’s finest. I’m very excited to catch Iris. This next band are playing Saturday at the Monkey House.

16.) Running Away From Home – The Snaz
17.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates
18.) The Original Original – Black Rabbit
19.) Iron And Metal – The Mountain Says No

Killer song from Mountain’s coming soon album. Same for Rabbit. Great song from Phil. After seeing Sarah at the Pancake last Friday I ran over to Radio Bean and caught this band play a killer show.

20.) Not A Nice Guy – ROUGH FRANCIS
21.) Projector – Vetica
22.) Forbidden Love – Pinhead
23.) These Stories – When Particles Collide

Another great new song from Particles. That one had me dancing around the studio. Killer classic Pinhead song. I miss Vetica. I try to never miss Francis. It’s been raining on and off a bunch today. This seemed appropriate.

24.) Way Like Water – Sarah Blacker
25.) Nothing But The Water I & II – Grace Potter
26.) Jan Michael Vincent – Chin Ho

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Windows Down – Lendway

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday there will be a staggering amount of music in Winooski. I’m going to highlight a lot of that, but want to start with what happened last weekend. It was great to see Elephants of Scotland play at Brutopia as part of the Marillion weekend in Montreal. Elephants played Nectar’s a couple of weeks ago, and it was cool to see them in Canada. There were lots of people who wanted to be there and knew their music and were so excited to see them. It was pretty great. They played a nice version of this one. This is TFAY by Elephants of Scotland on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) TFAY – Elephants of Scotland
2.) Slash & Burn – Zero Circle
3.) Broken Paths, Dead Ends – Better Things

BT and ZC are over at Club Metronome tonight opening for Hawthorne Heights. OK, it’s Waking Windows time. I’m going to run through the schedule in order and play bands that I have music for. This is a tiny sampling of the massive amount of music that will happen this weekend. It starts at 5pm and this artist is one of the ones that will kick it off.

4.) Headlights and Liquer – Kelly Ravin
5.) Grass Is Always Greener – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
6.) Little Song – Invisible Homes
7.) Obligatory Sad Love Song – The Smittens

8.) Think I’ll Stay – Great Western
9.) The Alchemist – Pours
10.) Better Half – Abbie Morin
11.) Catskills – Alpenglow

This next band play Friday night, then we will move on to Saturday.

12.) Wiser – And The Kids
13.) 1.21 Gigawats Great Scott – Doom Service
14.) Wino – REDadmirial

Time for the next song on Swale’s album The Next Instead. Of course they are a part of this great event. They play Saturday at 3:15 on the outdoor stage.

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Over the Christmas holiday I’ve been thinking a lot about the peace on earth good will towards people idea. We’ve made many strides but are still a long way off. This first song is a nice image of where we could end up if we work hard to wage peace.

1.) Happy Xmas (War is Over) – Joshua Glass Music
2.) Presence – Satori Bob
3.) Happy New Year – Ninja Custodian
4.) Basalt Anchor – Vedora

Love the sultry feel to the voice and music in that song, and the guitar playing is beautiful too! Can’t wait to see them more in this coming year with Jane Boxall Percussion on drums. Happy New Year has a nice sentiment on the surface but is about a terrible chemical spill in Bhopal. If humankind works together maybe we can stop having tragedies like that. Presence is a song about lighting up your inner poet and stepping away from materialism. I hope you enjoyed the holiday season. Does anyone know if The Mountain Says No ever got their Christmas sled?

5.) Christmas Sled – The Mountain Says No
6.) Cowgirl In The Sand – The Seth Yacovone Band

Killer version of the Neil Young song performed live at Nectar’s as part of the WBKM birthday party last November. Mountain are playing Saturday at The Monkey House with Black Rabbit and Dino Bravo VT. OK, let’s go on to the next song on Many Things and Many Scenes.

7.) Shoreline In Jersey – Joe Adler
8.) Old Souls Of Chatham County – Jeremy Gilchrist
9.) The Globe – Landlady

I still vividly remember the Landlady show at Signal Kitchen earlier this year. Someone can bring them back anytime!! Great new song from Jeremy. He was one of the many performers who played at First Night Burlington this year. It was great to see Joe play some new songs last Tuesday at Radio Bean. One of the ways I learn about music is to read the column by Seven Days music writer Dan Bolles then show up and see if I like the band. He is doing a list of the top local music singles of 2014. Here are a few of his picks.

10.) Unveiled – Pours
11.) Give Me All Your Love – Madaila
12/) Until It All Ends – Waylon Speed

Yup, he was right. Those are all pretty cool songs. This next song is on the list too, and this band played a killer show Tuesday at Nectar’s.

13.) Popular Crowd – Swale
14.) Searching To Destroy – Kiki’s Lost Nation
15.) Weapons Factory – The Wards

The Wards are down to a three-piece but played a smoking show at Radio Bean last Sunday. Lost Nation opened but Aurora sang instead of Kiki. Either way, they opened with a killer version of Searching. Here’s some music I got this morning. It’s Luke Awtry from Vetica‘s new band.

16.) Womb With A View – Heavy Plains
17.) Things Change – Black Rabbit
18.) A Different Machine (live) – Elephants of Scotland

Elephants have released the show they played in Gettysburg at Rosfest, a progressive rock festival. They are also playing Montreal in April at one of the Marillion weekend side events. I am so there! Can’t wait to see Rabbit in a couple of days. This next guy has been waging peace since his days as Mayor of Burlington. He made this album back in 1987 and is still standing up for the same things.

19.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont Artists
20.) Buttonz – Binger

Binger seem to be working towards the peace on earth idea and I thought their words would stand favorably with Bernie’s. I think they are playing Red Square tomorrow. OK, I’m almost out of time so let’s head back to Gettysburg for one more song.

21.) Endless (Pt 2) – Elephants Of Scotland.

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a chilly night in Burlington. There are a few people waking out and down the beautifully lit Church st. Tonight let’s start with a recording from Nectar’s from the WBKM 7th birthday party a couple of weeks ago. This is the Seth Yacovone Band playing some Neil Young & Crazy Horse on WBKM and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Cowgirl In The Sand – Real Old & Insane Donkey
2.) Little Wing – Bob Wagner and the Book “em Blues Band

Both of those were recorded at the WBKM 7th birthday party. There is an amazing amount of talent in those two bands! This next band played our birthday show too, but I don’t have a recording of it. This is two great guitarists from another live show.

3.) Destiny Waits – Bud & Budd ~ The Kind Buds
4.) These Summer Nights – Sarah Blacker
5.) Lean In – When Particles Collide

I love that song from the great duo from Maine. Sarah is from Boston but plays Burlington now and then too. Great guitar playing and singing from the Buds. I’ve just been handed a bulletin. This just in, punk rock is alive and well in Burlington Vermont!

6.) Hello World – Screaming Skulls
7.) Green Peaks Dark Valleys – Get A Grip
8.) Vermont City Living – Gorgon
9.) Be Aggressive – BE AGGRESSIVE
10.) Black Oil – Doom Service

Great song about the X-Files in the DS song. They’ve been playing lots of shows in town lately. Love the BA song. Gorgon always rock. Skulls is a new band with Justin Gonyea who is also in Doom. Grip are playing this weekend at Radio Bean. Friday has three can’t miss shows, so I’ll have to miss two. Dino Bravo VT and Crazyhearse are playing The Monkey House, Black Rabbit and Cave Bees are playing Manhattan Pizza and Pub, and ROUGH FRANCIS are celebrating their birthday with Friday and Saturday shows at Radio Bean. Friday they are playing with Varsity Drag, Blowtorch, Blue Button, Pours, and Get A Grip. Saturday they are playing with Ravi Shavi, Endless Jags, Swale, Black Rabbit and DJ Disco Phantom. I work until 9:30 on Friday and 11:30 on Saturday. I’m going to miss a lot of music, but should be able to catch some. OK, let’s go to the next song on Lipstick and Dynamite.

11.) The Invisibles – Black Rabbit
12.) Golden Goose – Cave Bees
13.) Righteous – Rough Francis
14.) Dead Or In Jail – Crazyhearse

All of those bands are great and playing pretty much at the same time. What’s a poor music fan to do? Oh, and Cave Bees have a guy named Creston Lea who is a great guitar player and guitar maker. Check out the video about him if you get a chance! OK, let’s keep rocking.

15.) Tic Toc – Doll Fight
16.) Imaginary – Envy
17.) Weapons Factory – The Wards
18.) Burn – The Dirty Blondes

The Blondes have been rocking town for quite a while. The Wards rocked us in the ’80;s, Envy in the ’90’s and Doll in the 00’s. Love all those songs. I miss Doll Fight. Christine moved on to Boston, I think Kelly formed Gorgon, and Jane Boxall Percussion is doing a million things, like playing with Black Rabbit, Vedora, and something new. On the walk down I noticed Orion in the sky for the first time. Winter is here. Seeing the hunter always makes me think of this song.

19.) Stylus Of Id – Somah
20.) Summer’s Gone – The Cush
21.) Words – Slingshot Dakota
22.) Next Summer Out On The Ice – Endless Jags

I love the new Jags album Sell The Banquet. I’ll likely be working when they are playing. Love Slingshot! Nice video out for The Cush song. I just got this next song before heading down to do the show. This is a piece by Raph Worrick and Jane Boxall, collectively known as Bad Smell.

23.) AV6 (?) – Bad Smell
24.) The Alchemist – Pours
25.) Einstein-Rosen Bridge – Jeremy Gilchrist

Very cool lyrics on the Jeremy song. It’s kind of fun playing some new music and as soon as I heard it, I though it would mix nicely into Pours. OK, let’s go back to the birthday party show for some more Seth.

26.) Down By The River -> Like A Hurricane – Real Old & Insane Donkey

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
