I just got back from from doing my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. Considering how I placed the songs tonight I likely should have used The Old And They Young by MIDLAKE BAND as the song before, but considering the past couple of days, I had to use Flood of Sunshine.

Song before: Flood Of Sunshine – The Posies

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It’s a warm night and the last couple of days have felt like we just had spring for a few days, and now it feels like summer. This is Sarah Blacker on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind of Music.

1.) These Summer Nights – Sarah Blacker
2.) All The Kids – The New Siberians
3.) Our Work Is Never Done – PossumHaw
4.) The North – Hana Zara

I love the reference to the painted buildings in Burlington’s Old North End in that song. Great song from PossumHaw! That’s a super brand new song from Siberians. I’ve got the windows open and it feels like a warm summer night. This next artist used to be mayor of Burlington and now he’s running for President.

5.) We Shall Overcome – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and thirty Vermont artists
6.) Destiny Waits – Bud & Budd ~ The Kind Buds
7.) Sweet Angel – Robert Gagnon

Lovely song by Bob! Bud and Budd are such excellent guitar players. If you like the guitar, make sure you check them out sometime. Speaking of great guitar players you really should check out.

8.) New Atlantis – Aaron Flinn
9.) At The Diner – Zoot Wilson
10.) Evel Kinevel – Guppyboy
11.) Rocketsled’s Funky Main Man Meets Big Joe On Church Street – Phish & Richard Haupt.

Richard showed a lot of heart playing the clarinet on Church Street every day for years. It’s cool that Phish backed him up on that. Nice cover of the Chainsaws Of Babylon by Guppy. It almost had a Legend Of A Mind sweep to it. Killer song by Zoot. Aaron is playing at Radio Bean Tuesday at nine, if you want to check him out, and you really should if you can. So, speaking of Big Joe.

12.) Every Time I Hear That Mellow Saxophone – Big Joe Burrell & The Unknown Blues Band
13.) Sunflower Street – David L. Jarvis
14.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
15.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith

Yet another great song from Maryse’s new album The Way It Is. Kat and the band are just so good. It’s not quite sunflower time yet, but there are tons of flowers blooming around town. Here is another cool new song.

16.) The Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist
17.) Double Dare Ya – Steph Pappas
18.) Somebody Up There Loves Me – The Starline Rhythm Boys
19.) 40 Days – Better Things

BT are playing lots of shows and writing lots of music and are really good. Rhythm Boys have been playing around for years and are still going strong. Steph’s been making music in our town for a long time too. Let’s continue on through Swale’s album The Next Instead.

20.) Popular Crowd – Swale
21.) That’s That Is Is – Ninja Custodian
22.) Bullet – REDadmiral
23.) Yours Sincerely – Persian Claws
24.) Be A Good Citizen (NYC Mix) – Pinhead

Classic song with lots of good advice. The Claws are always fun! I’ve got to put in the effort to catch Admiral sometime soon. Classic from Ninja. This next artist has played tons of great shows for years and is getting a lifetime achievement award at Nectar’s tomorrow. It is extremely well deserved.

25.) Nighttime Fades – Seth Yacovone Band
26.) Film Called Life – Jer Coons
27.) How It Goes – Blue Button
28.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town, let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It’s a cold night in Burlington but people are out and about, walking around, not letting it stop them. I was trying to make it to three shows this week and feel bad I only made it to one. Great Western played a great show lat Friday at Radio Bean, and did a killer version of this one. This is Into the light by Great Western on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Into The Light – Great Western
2.) The Storm Within – Death World Wide
3.) Holy Family – Heavy Plains
4.) Burn It Down Bernadette – Phil Yates & The Affiliates

I made it to Western last Friday and after a long work day Saturday was dragging when it got close to the Phil show at The Monkey House. As it turned out the party ended up coming to me that night. I was going to go see Phil Yates solo at Radio Bean on Sunday but the afternoon nap was 4 hours and I woke up right as he was going on. I should have set the alarm. Rats. Great song from the upcoming Phil album. I just got the Plains album today and that one jumped at me. Sweet song from Death from the Burlington days. OK, on to the next song on Many Things & Many Scenes. This is a beautiful song that I’m sending out to my brother. It features Johnnie Day Durand on the saw.

5.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
6.) New Atlantis – Aaron Flinn
7.) The Next Instead – Swale

I thought Swale were going to play Radio Bean tomorrow night but the schedule changed and now it’s Barbacoa and Binger. Hmm. I think Aaron is playing at Juniper tomorrow. I may have to check that out. Joe is playing Saturday night at the Bean, so that will be fun. This next band is from Canada but have played Burlington and Vermont so many times, they are practically locals. They are playing the Flynn Theater on Tuesday. I’ve seen them many times but may miss this one. I had no money when tickets went on sale, and as soon as I could afford it, they were sold out. Oh well, maybe next time. On this tour they are playing a few songs, then all of Fully Completely.

8.) Fully Completely – The Tragically Hip
9.) New Orleans Is Sinking (live w/Nautical Disaster in the middle) – The Tragically Hip

That’s going to be a rocking night at the Flynn. The Flynn will also rock in February when Death and Rough Francis play. I’ve got tickets for that, for me and my brother Ken. Here’s another song from Spiritual Mental Physical.

10.) Can You Give Me A Thrill??? – Death
11.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS
13.) Something I Drew – farm

Farm put on some great shows and I always loved that one. I though it would sound great coming out of Comm and was so right. OK, let’s slow things down a little. This next artist has an album coming in February. Until then I will have to just play this one.

14.) Dropout Generation – Hana Zara
15.) Better Half – Abbie Morin
16.) Our Work Is Never Done – PossumHaw

I love that song and really love the sentiment of it! I may not make it, but I’ll always try. I don’t know a lot about Abbie but she has a Wednesday night residence at Nectar’s this January. I’m sure Ill catch her the night Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger play. Love Hana, can’t wait for the new songs!. This next artist just started a Kickstarter to fund his new album. The last one was great, and here is a song from it.

17.) 1965 – The New Siberians
18.) Old North Ender – James Kochalka Superstar
19.) We’re Closed – Blue Button
20.) Hammerhead – Barbacoa

Barbacoa always rock. I’ll see how the energy goes tomorrow. I’d love to catch them at the Bean. I was going to play a song by Redadmirial but it was in a format the players did not recognize, so maybe next week. It was recorded live at a pub called The Old Northender so I had to play the James song. Love the BB song too. OK, time for two more songs. These are two “literary” characters of song from Burlington.

21.) Chester Allen – The World Famous Hanglows
22.) Errol McSquisitor (live) – Elephants of Scotland

Wow, that was just tremendous live. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: The Old And The Young – MIDLAKE BAND

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a cool and snowy night in Burlington. We got 11 inches Wednesday but the roads and sidewalks are pretty passable. Thanks DPW! Tonight I’m going to alternate new and old songs to highlight the great talent in this town. Let’s start with a couple of songs from the soundtrack to some cool underwater Vermont videos. This is Maidstone by I See Fish People on WBKM and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Maidstone – I See Fish People
2.) Burette’s Green River – I See Fish People
3.) Deal – Bud & Budd ~ The Kind Buds

Great guitar playing on the Dead cover. Lots of people in Vermont still love the Dead and The Buds played a killer version of that. Nice build in the middle! The Fish people CD just came out this week, and is as new as it gets. OK, let’s play another new song. Doug McAllister was in Ninja Custodian a long time ago and is now in California with a new band called Super Music Band.

4.) Not Everything Is About You – Super Music Band
5.) Monkey Business – Ninja Custodian
6.) Under Bright Stars – Alice Austin
7.) Seeds And Stems – The New Siberians

It really has been a while since the Siberians album came out. They should have something new soon, and I think Ryan Power is working on it. Great new song from Alice. That’s Doug singing the classic Ninja song. It was cool to hang out with Ted Pappadopoulos from the Siberians at Manhattan Pizza and Pub last Friday at the Black Rabbit show. Here is the last song on their EP Lipstick And Dynamite that I’m playing all the way through.

8.) Carnage – Black Rabbit
9.) Kick The Can – Cave Bees
10.) Time To Save The World – Carraway
11.) Medula Mamblongatta – Strung Out

I remember seeing them at the Chicken Bone Cafe. That was a while ago. Carraway just put out an excellent new EP. Classic from the Bees who have been in an out of the scene for a long time. Man those Rabbit shows with Jane Boxall Percussion on drums are getting really intense. Here’s a song that came out last year.

12.) Mirrors – Vetica
13.) No More Sex – Pinhead
14.) In Comes The Tide – PossumHaw

Great song from the Waiting and Watching album from earlier this year. Classic song from Pinhead. OK, let’s head back to the ’90’s for a great piece of music.

15.) Poem For Torin/Ethan’s Stoned – Peg Tassey MUSIC
16.) Eliza – Alpenglow
17.) Let It Shine – Rachel Brown

Rachel used to unleash her beautiful and powerful voice on us back in the ’90’s. Great new song from Alpenglow’s Chapel EP. Here’s another new song that I just love.

18.) 40 Days – Better Things
19.) Politicians In My Eyes – Death World Wide
20.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS

Francis just re-released the Maximum Soul Power Album this year on Riot House Records. Death was their fathers band, then Dannis and Bobby were in Lambsbread playing reggae when I got into the music scene. They rocked a bit harder before that. Up next is another classic rocker from the ’90’s.

21.) Decide – David L. Jarvis
22.) Before The Night – Swale
23.) Let Up – Construction Joe

It’s been a while since I thought of Joe and that is a great song. I love that Swale song! I want to dedicate this next song to the magnificent Joe Adler who just lost his father. Somehow I just know he’s up there looking down at Joe with lots of love.

24.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
25.) Extended Werewolf – farm

There’s only so much time indeed. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we.

(yea, not my best ending!!)

Hey guys, Tim here for one more song. It’s a Fish song as always. He’s just played some killer shows and has some sold out ones coming up. Here’s the first song on the new album, A Feast Of Consequences. This is Perfume River by Fish, and even though he’s from Scotland, this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music on WBKM.

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’m going to play a ton of new music tonight, but let’s start with a couple of Burlington classics. This is Zoot Wilson on Wbkm, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Killer Bee Bop – Zoot Wilson
2.) Every Time I Hear That Mellow Saxophone – Big Joe Burrell and the Unknown Blues Band
3.) My Atom Girl – The Dirtminers
4.) Three Cheers – Phil Yates & The Affiliates

Happy birthday to a great guy, a great singer/songwriter,guitar player, a great father, husband and teacher. Three Cheers to Phil Yates on his birthday. The Dirthminers always put on fun shows and played geopolitical songs about having a crush on the girl in your class, you know, stuff like that. Raph Worrick was a driving force in the band and he is one of Phil’s affiliates. This next song is from the brand new (released two days ago) album featuring many of Burlington’s greats. It’s also the name of a show on Tuesday nights from 7-9pm on WBKM.ORG.

5.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
6.) Good Thing – Maryse Smith
7.) The Ground Is Giving Up – Aaron Flinn

Aaron is one of Vermont’s true talents. I have not caught up with him recently, but hope to soon. Maryse is playing the Cambridge Music Festival this Saturday with Swale and others. Go see her if you can. You will be better off for it. Great new album from Joe Adler. He will play Saturday night with the Rangers at Nectar’s. This next band just released a very nice and happy video.

8.) Smile – Dwight and Nichole
9.) In Comes The Tide – PossumHaw
10.( Under Bright Stars – Alice Austin

I’m really beginning to love the riff in Stars and can’t wait to hear what she comes up with next. I love that song by PossumHaw. I ran into Hana Zara at Radio Bean on Tuesday when Joe Adler and Samara Lark Brown played, We agreed that she owed me a physical copy of her first CD. I ran into her while walking downtown on Wednesday and she gave me a copy. Here is one of the many great songs from that album.

11.) Nathaniel – Hana Zara
12.) Lights Of Montreal – Lobot
13.) Sunny Side Of The Couch – The Leston’s
14.) 88 – Wave Of The Future

Great new song from Wave. That EP came out a couple of weeks ago. I’m heading to Manhattan Pizza to see them after this show. Dino Bravo are opening, but I will be too late to catch them. Matthew Stephen Perry played with the Leston’s and Chris Farnsworth played with Lobot, so if you listen to those two songs you will get a hint of what Bravo sound like. Friday and Saturday the South End of Burlington will be filled with art and music. Wave are playing tomorrow at Speaking Volumes on Pine st, and this next band are playing Saturday on King Street, as part of the South End Art Hop.

15.) Eighty Nine – Black Rabbit
16.) Dreams Elope – Joe Adler and the Rangers Of Danger
17.) High Water Mark – The Pants

Classic Burlington rock from the nineties. Another great new song from Joe’s album Many Things & Many Scenes. I hope I can make it to Rabbit on Saturday. The college kids are back and September 1st was a huge moving day in Burlington. This is the next song from Ninja Jane.

18.) Moving Song – Zola Turn
19.) Killing Ghosts – Better Things
20.) Wiser – And The Kids

And The Kids will play at the Art Hop on Flynn ave on Friday and will play at Nectar’s with Joe on Saturday. Yea! Great new song from Better. I ran into Michael Clifford on Wednesday. He wanted my Hana Zara CD but I would not give it to him. To make it up to him, a bit, here is a song from one of his bands.

21.) Ready To Race – Lendway
22.) TFAY – Elephants of Scotland

I love the John Whyte lyric asking if we can win the human race, and like the lyrical tie in with Lendway. Of course we can win the human race. Act with joy and promote fun for all. We’ll all win that way. OK, here’s more Joe.

23.) Many A Girl (Back Of A Sail) – Joe Adler and the Rangers Of Danger
24.) Ain’t No Telling – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
25.) Many A Girl (Back Of A Sail) reprise – Joe Adler and the Rangers Of Danger

Joe’s band and Kat’s band are pretty much the same, so I thought I’d mix them together. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show on Wbkm Dot Org. I played a lot of different music from a lot of different times, and talked a bit about those who have left us recently, either for natural or unjust causes.

Song before: Police On My Back – The Clash

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s getting cool in the Champlain Valley but the music is still hot. I just saw two punk trios at 242 Twofourtwo Main, 5 girls and 1 guy. It’s great that girls are rocking today, but they did back in the ’90’s too. Here is the next song from Ninja Jane on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Chop Wood/Carry Water – Zola Turn
2.Rock And Roll Is My Weapon – Ninja Custodian
3.) Flux Capacitor – Wave of the Future

Another great song from Wave’s new EP. Wave are playing Nectar’s on Saturday, after the ROUGH FRANCIS, Waylon Speed boat cruise. Wave are playing with Burning Monk and The Mountain Says No, I’m very psyched. Love the Ninja song and Zola have always been a favorite. This next band just played at The Monkey House this evening, but the timing was bad and I could not be there. I bet they played this one

4.) A Different Machine – Elephants of Scotland
5.) Plenty Hands – Parmaga
6.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

I just got the Anais album Young Man In America and loved Ships immediately. Same with the Parmaga EP. Up next is a song that I keep finding myself humming.

7.) Our Work Is Never Done – PossumHaw
8.) Pretty Little Things – Maryse Smith
9.) People Get Ready – Kip Meaker Trio
10.) Mystery Blues – Zoot Wilson

Zoot was a legend when I was learning about music in Burlington. Kip was one of the greats, and sadly, just passed away. I’ve had a lot of Maryse songs running through my head since her show at The Precipice: A Vermont Music Festival. The other album I just picked up is Crown Pilot.

11.) Julianne Wait – Lowell Thompson and Crown Pilot
12.) Make Me See Stars – The Lonestar Chain
13.) Coming Down Again – Waylon Speed
14.) Staring Out The Window – Rough Francis

That’s going to be a heck of a show on the boat with both Waylon and RF. I have to work late enough that I don’t think I will quite make it, but will see. Great song by Burette Douglas and the gang, and that’s a pretty solid backing band with Lowell. Here’s another song from the new Crazyhearse album. It features Rebecca Rogers, who is no longer in jail in Cleveland.

15.) A Bottle Of Whiskey Later – Crazyhearse
16.) Toe Jam – The Toes
17.) Paper Train – David L. Jarvis
18.) New Age Woman – Pinhead

That was a couple of classics. Pinhead played in the ’80’s and Dave in the ’90’s. The Toes are always crazy fun. They are playing a fundraiser for the Psychedelicatessen. I stopped by, around 11:25, but the guy was saying they would have some quieter acts on, so I assumed I missed them. I’m loving the new Crazyhearse. This next band played the Monkey House tonight too, and I missed them too.

19.) Might As Well Settle – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
20.) Circumstance – Tokyo Storm Warning
21.) Finder – Madelines
22.) The Fool – Poxy
23.) Shut Up – Gorgon

Gorgon and Poxy played a couple of beautiful sets at 242 Main. I had just enough time to check them out before this show. Madelines and Tokyo were great loud rock bands from the ’90’s. Let’s keep the rock going.

24.) Mad Mary Jones – THE VACANT LOTS
25.) Basalt Anchor – Vedora
26.) You Can Love If You Want To – Peg Tassey MUSIC
27) Extended Werewolf – farm

There’s only so much time indeed. Whether if’s people like Kip and Lauren Bacall who lived full lives or Robin Williams or the completely senseless killing of Michael Brown, we only have a limited amount of time. I like listening to music, like what Vedora have shared with the world, and following Peg Tassey‘s advice and choosing to love. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Trouble’s Lament – Tori Amos

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Sunday was warm in the ’60’s and Monday was almost 80 degrees. It snowed on Tuesday. In April in Vermont, snow is just an Ordinary Day. This is Milton Busker on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
2.) Garden Flower – Maryse Smith
3.) Now And Then – PossumHaw
4.) New York, My Lovely – Joshua Glass

It’s getting beautiful in VT and next door in NY too. If you ever get a chance to see Josh, go! This is another PossumHaw song and is really nice. The Maryse song reminds me of the crocuses that are blooming everywhere. I finally bought a few Milton songs. Yea. Tomorrow I’m going to The Monkey House to see Phil Yates and the Affiliates.

5.) Three Cheers – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
6.) Flypaper – Persian Claws
7.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
8.) Almost Human – Pinhead

Those were two great songs from some of Burlington’s best. Persian are playing with Phil at the Monkey tomorrow. Up next is the song Doug McAllister sings on Dancing With The Big Guy.

9.) Monkey Business – Ninja Custodian
10.) Dead Or In Jail – Crazyhearse
11.) Sunny Side Of The Couch – The Lestons

Matthew Stephen Perry rocked with the Lestons, then Party Star and now Dino Bravo VT. I love this song and it reminds me of the sun today. Another rocker from Crazyhearse. Up next is a band from Maine who have been playing some shows lately. Hopefully they will come back to town soon.

12.) Blackbird Calling – Old Soul
13.) Gunslinger – Lendway
14.) A Different Machine – Elephants of Scotland
15.) Cold – Wolvings

It was sunny today, but pretty cold. Another great Elephants song. Another great Lendway song. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town, let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Immigrant Song – Led Zeppelin Official

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s spring and the ground is covered with snow and ice. Aaah, Vermont. Last night I saw some really challenging music, so I’m going to open with a challenging song, then play some of the sweetest music to ever grace our town. This is a song called Well On Your Way by Ryan Power on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Well On Your Way – Ryan Power
2.) Basalt Anchor – Vedora
3.) In Comes The Tide – PossumHaw

I really like that song from PossumHaw and thought it would sound great coming out of Basalt. Vedora are playing tomorrow at Radio Bean and Happy Birthday (yesterday) to Caroline O’Connor. Now it’s time for the next song on Dancing With The Big Guy. This is their sweeter pop side.

4.) Ladybug – Ninja Custodian
5.) Teenage Mother Earth – The Red Telephone
6.) Breathing In – The Hero Cycle

I loved the few times I saw Hero. All of those are great songs that were played live in our town. I’m so lucky to live here! I’ve been loving the new show Cosmos with Neil Degrasse Tyson. Here’s a song about the joy of being smart.

7.) Super Sexy Science Party – Wave of the Future
8.) Might As Well Settle – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
9.) Finally Found The One – When Particles Collide

I love that song from Particles. They rock and Sasha Alcott is a science teacher when not a road warrior. There is another chance to purchase their upcoming album on pink vinyl. Phil and crew are playing Saturday at Radio Bean, and Swale are playing The Monkey House at the same time. Grrr. Wave are wrapping up recording their album. It should be out sometime in the near future. Last weekend I went out to see The Mountain Says No at Radio Bean, but made a stop at the OP to hang out with Mike Luoma and David L. Jarvis. After a bit I headed to Juniper to see Great Western, since Mountain were on later I love this song.

10.) Think I’ll Stay – Great Western
11.) Windigo – Crazyhearse
12.) I’m With The Bomb – The Mountain Says No

I love that song from Mountain. The Crazyhearse CD has been hanging out at the station. I brought it home and liked that song. I’ve never seen them, but I’ve seen them listed at Club Metronome. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
