Song before: The End Of The World – Skeeter Davis

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Tonight is the 200th show that I’ve done on WBKM and it’s been a joy bringing you some of Burlington’s best music over the past 4 years. Tonight, I will pull out a whole bunch of classic songs. Let’s begin with one of my favorite songs from 2007.

1.) Star – The New Siberians
2.) Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot
3.) Black Sheep – Kelly Ravin
4.) Green Doors – Lowell Thompson Music and Crown Pilot

Lowell and Kelly play in a band called The Welterweights and they play at Higher Ground on Saturday. Thanks for sponsoring our station Higher Ground! Andriana is amazing and I loved seeing her play that song last Friday. Hmmm, Siberians. OK, it’s time to play the next song on By My Side.

5.) Way With Words – Kat Wright
6.) Harvest Moon – Silver Bridget
7.) Unspoken – Anders Parker
8.) When She Sleeps – Peg Tassey MUSIC

Great gentle and powerful song from Peg. Anders is just amazing. Bridget are playing some enchanting shows these days. Yet another great song from Kat. This next band released this song last year and it quickly became a favorite. They are playing at The Monkey House on Saturday.

9.) The Bad Year – Carraway
10.) Paper Train – Dave Jarvis Band (Daffy Mal Yinkleyank)
11.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
12.) Popular Crowd – SWALE

Swale are playing great shows and are about to drop a new album on us. They have a Kickstarter going if you want to help out. Zola and Dave put on great shows in the ’90’s and Dave is now in Agent 802. Great song from Carraway. This band played around in the early 2010’s.

13.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws
14.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
15.) Sun In The Sky – Ninja Custodian
16.) You – Screaming Broccoli

Broccoli played in the late ’80’s and early ’90’s. Same for Ninja. I want to send Sun to anyone going through a rough time. It’s always been a source of strength for me. Doubtfire are out playing great shows and have a new EP coming soon. Hmmm, Claws. OK, here is another of my favorite songs.

17.) Alienation – Black Rabbit
18.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight
19.) Bloodboy – Envy
20.) Black & Red – ROUGH FRANCIS

Francis are a tremendous band and have a new album coming soon. Envy played great shows in the ’90’s and one last year. Doll Fight rocked us in the 2000’s and Rabbit are rocking us now. This next song is one of the most intense songs that got played in town many times over the years.

21.) The Drone – The Cush
22.) Release The Beast – The Mountain Says No
23.) Knight Ov Swords – The Contrarian
24.) Bionic – The Red Telephone

Such a great song from Matt Hutton and Sean Toohey as they moved from Envy to RT. Casey Merlin Rae is the Contrarian and is amazing. Great song from Mountain’s first album and an absolute classic from The Cush. This next band are playing around as The High Breaks but did an album of Sabbath.

25.) Children Of The Grave – Surf Sabbath
26.) Can’t Feel It – Vetica
27.) Grey Goo – Villanelles
28.) Break – Slingshot Dakota

SD come to town so often they are honorary Vermonters. Villanelles are playing around and that song always makes me happy. Great song from Vetica from the 2010’s and a rearranged classic from the Breaks from the last year or so. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

WBKM

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM will run from 9-11pm tonight. You can listen over the air on both sides of the Champlain Valley or from the Facebook link above. It will go as follows:

Song Before: The Stars (Are Out Tonight) – David Bowie

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to begin by thanking Higher Ground for sponsoring us. They have New Year’s Eve and the night before New Year’s Eve shows with Madaila coming up soon. Let’s begin tonight with a gorgeous song from a band who played a bunch of great shows in 2016 and should play a bunch more in the new year.

1.) Love Me Tender – Silver Bridget
2.) Can We Go There? – Bethany Conner Music
3.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara
4.) Counting On A Ghost – Elephants of Scotland

Elephants put out a terrific album this year called The Perfect Map. Hana played a great show for us this year in Burlington. Bethany is a cool performer with a ton of potential in her future. Bridget are so cool. OK, here is the next song from Shovel Down.

5.) The Snake – Seth Yacovone Band
6.) No Match For Her – The Decentz
7.) You – Screaming Broccoli
8.) The Invisibles – Black Rabbit

That’s from a couple of years ago but Rabbit are rocking hard and strong and should have a great 2017. Broccoli and Decentz are from Burlington’s early ’90’s and early ’80’s and helped create the scene we have now. That’s quite the rocker from Seth and the band. This next song may be my favorite from 2016.

9.) Black 17 – The New Siberians
10.) Last Night – Carraway
11.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
12.) Drug Me Up – Ninja Custodian

Ninja’s music always drags me up when I’m down. Doubtfire put out a great EP this year. Carraway and the Siberians put out tremendous albums this year. This next song is an older one but the band got back together for a show this year.

13.) Finger Prison – Envy
14.) Msp2 – ROUGH FRANCIS
15.) Naomi’s Back – Fire The Cannons
16.) It’s Real Again – Zola Turn

That’s a classic from the ’90’s. Cannons kept us rocking through the early 2000’s. That’s a newish one from Francis. I can’t wait for the new album!! Hmmm, Envy. This woman rocked the ’90’s and is still helping music be made.

17.) Not True – Peg Tassey MUSIC
18.) Papertrain – David Jarvis
19.) Ex-Files – Better Things
20.) The Art Of Giving In – 1881

That’s a song from the brand new and brilliant album Action. Great song from Better who released that earlier this year. Dave’s song is from the ’90’s but he’s back in town making music. It’s always great to hear Peg. This band will light up Higher Ground with fun this weekend.

21.) Children Of The Stars – Madaila
22.) Come Dance – Kat Wright
23.) Piano In Every Room – gneiss
24.) Break – Slingshot Dakota

That’s a song from my favorite non-local album from this year. Besides, SD come and visit us often. Piano is such a comforting song. Great song from Kat’s new album. Same for Madaila. OK, let’s go back a couple of years and rock.

25.) Release The Beast – The Mountain Says No
26.) Willow II – Tyler Daniel Bean
27.) Silver And Gold – Waylon Speed!
28.) Inner Revolution – Adrian Belew

Everyone is excited that Adrian will play ArtsRiot in March. Waylon always put on great rock shows. Great new song from Tyler. Mountain rock hard and will have a new album soon. I feel like I’ve been moving through time tonight so let’s play this one.

29.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws
30.) The Ballad Of Tom Smith – The Skamaphrodites
31.) Shy Spiders – Villanelles

Spiders is one of the great songs from 2016. I want to thank Daniel Bolles for his many years as music editor. Thanks for being such a champion for music in our town, and for taking me seriously. I hope your 2017 brings great new adventures. Well, I’ll be off next week, but I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again the week after next.

Tonight’s local music Halloween show on 107.1FM WBKM runs from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows:

Song before: Who Are These Gods? – Dam Kat

intro

From our small mortuary to the great big graveyard, these are the skulls of Burlington. It’s been a terrifying few days in Burlington with cold wind and snow blanketing the beautiful red orange and gold leaves. The forecast is for it to get darker and darker until All Hallows Eve on Monday, then it will return to it’s usual lovely state. Our sponsor, Higher Ground, is likely going to send me to the gallows for not mentioning how great of a rock club they are but tonight I want to focus on the fusion of the physical world and the spirits that inhabit it. Our perception of life is merely the light dancing across shifting solid objects. Let’s explore this subject matter with a song called Shadow and Act by Invisible Homes on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington’s Kind Of Music, Plattsburgh’s kind of music and Danemora’s kind of music too.

1.) Shadow And Act – Invisible Homes
2.) Oh My God – Sarah Blacker
3.) Release The Dead – Chin Ho
4.) Angels And Devils – Invisible Homes

That was a song called Angels and Devils by Invisible Homes on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington, Plattsburgh, Danemora. Can you think of anything more terrifying than going back to your home after a long night at the clubs and finding it invisible? Once you find your way inside it must be hard to balance the angels and devils. For the tale before that I had to dig deep into one of our oldest graveyards to find the song Release the dead by Chin Ho. Did you enjoy Sarah Blacker’s tale of darkness and light in Oh My God? I hope Invisible Homes twin tales of Shadow and Act and Angels and Devils help you enjoy the thin thread between the worlds. Speaking of the devil. let’s take a journey to an ancient Vermont Farm for a song called Devil on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington’s Kind Of Music, Plattsburgh’s kind of music and Danemor’s kind of music too.

5.) Devil – farm
6.) Devil’s Work – Thompson Gunner
7.) Devil’s Right Hand – Swillbillie
8.) Devil Knows My Name – Great Western

Great Western must be terrified that the Devil Knows Their Name on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington, Plattsburgh, Danemora. Swillbillie told us a gruesome tale of a gun being used as The Devil’s Right Hand. Thompson Gunner told us a tale of he Devil’s Work, and Farm told us a story about freeing themselves from the hold of the Devil. Now, we shall let Hana Zara tell us about one of our most famous holiday’s. It’s called Day Of The Dead on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington’s Kind Of Music, Plattsburgh’s kind of music and Danemora’s kind of music too.

9.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara
10.) Raising The Dead – Carraway
11.) Ninjas Vs Zombies – Phil Yates
12.) Two Weeks (’til The End Of The World) – Grand

Considering America’s imminent grand decision, perhaps it is just Two Weeks (’til the end of the world) as the band Grand so nicely stated on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington, Plattsburgh, Danemora. I hope you enjoyed Phil Yates’ tale of Ninjas Vs Zombies and the epic battle for life. If the zombies should win, at least they dance well, as Carraway explained in Raising The Dead. Hana Zara’s cheery tale of the Day Of The Dead should give you hope too, in the darkest of evenings. Are you afraid yet? I hope so because it’s time to be terrified. It’s time for Doom Service and a Welcome To The Hellmouth on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington’s Kind Of Music, Plattsburgh’s kind of music and Danemora’s kind of music too.

13.) Welcome To The Hellmouth – Doom Service
14.) Demon Eyes – Lake Superior
15.) Demon Moon – Crazyhearse
16.) Vampyre – David Jarvis

That was a tale of the Vampyre by Dave Jarvis on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington, Plattsburgh, Danemora. Dave will resurrect his old body and band for a show tomorrow and I hear word that the Vampyre will appear. Were you more afraid of Crazyhearse’s story of the Demon Moon or Lake Superior’s Demon eyes? Both were pretty frightening. I hope you enjoyed your Welcome To The Hellmouth with Doom Service. They put on the darkest of shows last Tuesday at Nectar’s. This next singer plays all the time, but to find Alice Austin, you must go to a Graveyard Before Dark on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington, Plattsburgh, Danemora.

17.) Graveyard Before Dark – Alice Austin
18.) One More Grave – The Contrarian
19.) Children Of The Grave – Jesus Christ and the Hallucinogenic Allstars
20.) Paranoid – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)

Even ghouls like to surf so I hope you enjoyed the cover of Paranoid by Surf Sabbath on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington, Plattsburgh, Danemora. Since Vultures of Cult and SWALE are playing Black Sabbath cover shows on Saturday I had to subject us to Children Of The Grave by Jesus Christ and the Hallucinogenic All Stars. The Contrarian took us on a trip through One More Grave and we started in The Graveyard Before Dark with newly married Alice Austin. As all of the undead know, once you are in the grave, there is only one way to go, down. Fortunately, you will be guided by Our Lady Of The Underground as told by Anais Mitchell on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington’s Kind Of Music, Plattsburgh’s kind of music and Danemora’s kind of music too.

21.) Our Lady Of The Underground – Anais Mitchell
22.) I Put A Spell On You – Marco Benevento and Kat Wright
23.) You’ll Make A Great Ghost – the grift
24.) Ghost Train – Jerichovox

Did you enjoy your journey on the Ghost Train with Jerichovox on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington, Plattsburgh, Danemora? I hope so, there will be more ghostly songs soon. The Grift thought You Will Make A Great Ghost and I agree. That was Marco Benevento and Kat Wright who admitted that I Put A Spell On You and Anais Mitchell was Our Lady Of The Underground. Some people are addicted to the supernatural but Aaron Flinn is forever Giving Up The Ghost on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington’s Kind Of Music, Plattsburgh’s kind of music and Danemors kind of music too.

25.) Giving Up The Ghost – Aaron Flinn
26.) Counting On A Ghost – Elephants of Scotland
27.) Ghostified – Persian Claws
28.) Killing Ghosts – Better Things

Better things are lovely kids to think that they can go around Killing Ghosts on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington, Plattsburgh’, Danemora. The Persian Claws left us Ghostified and Elephants of Scotland regaled us with a tale of Counting On A Ghost. Aaron Flinn is still Giving Up The Ghost and may do so for all eternity. This next group of individuals has demised as a band, but spend some time before they left Planning My Funeral. They were briefly known as Poxy on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington’s Kind Of Music, Plattsburgh’s kind of music and Danemora kind of music too.

29.) Planning My Funeral – Poxy
30.) With The Dead – Vultures of Cult

As we approach Halloween, we are all With The Dead as foretold by Vultures of Cult on WBKM.ORG 107.1FM Burlington, Plattsburgh, Danemora. I hope you were terrified to check out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Goodbye. Farewell, See Ya, Sayonara.

31.) Black Cat – Black Rabbit
outro

Songs after:
Plague Of Ghosts (live USA 2000) – Fish
Phantom Girl – The Cush
Black 17 – The New Siberians
Crazy Hearse – Barbacoa
Voodoo Camero – Wide Wail
Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot

Tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM will go as follows:

Song before: Time Warp – Rocky Horror Picture Show

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring our station. I heard the Shellac show was great last night and Dweezil is playing on Sunday so that is cool. It’s just been so lovely around town lately with lots of sunny days lighting up the foliage. It makes me think of this song.

1.) Blue Sky – Black Rabbit
2.) Nightingale – 1881
3.) Good Times – Grand
4.) Last Night – Carraway

Great fun brand new rocking song from Carraway. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album when it comes out. I just got Grand’s EP and it rocks nicely. 1881 just put out their second EP Camera. The first was called Lights and the third will be Action. Hmmm, Black Rabbit. OK, let’s play the next song from the Invisible Homes album Song For My Double.

5.) The Lie – Invisible Homes
6.) Fa Fa Fanta – WE Are The Asteroid
7.) Desert – Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re
8.) Golden Goose – Cave Bees

Bees played a great version of that one last night at ArtsRiot. They were joined by Tsu and Asteroid. They have been touring together and recorded one of each others songs. Desert is really an Asteroid song and Fa is a Tsu song. I though it would be fun to play those two. Great song by Homes. These next three bands will rock Nectar’s next Tuesday.

9.) Losing Control – Mr. Doubtfire
10.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service
11.) Getting Laid In New Hampshire – Better Things
12.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight

I miss Doll Fight. I’m glad they left us lots of music before breaking up. Nectar’s should be fun next Tuesday!! OK, let’s keep rocking.

13.) Burn – Dirty Blondes
14.) Can’t Feel It – Vetica
15.) Screwball – Screaming Broccoli
16.) Not True – Peg Tassey MUSIC

Peg and Broccoli used to rock our town in the late ’80’s and ’90’s. I love that Vetica song. The Blondes will host a huge party at Nectar’s on election night so come on out if you do not want to be alone. This next song is a Burlington classic.

17.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
18.) Paint With The Sun – Arc Iris
19.) Cascade – Andriana Chobot
20.) Vicarious – Alice Austin

Great song from Alice. I’m loving the Andriana album. Arc played a great show on Saturday at Signal Kitchen. Hmmm, The Cush. This next band play in town a lot and always put on a great show.

21.) Kick Rocks – And The Kids
22.) The Territory – Hana Zara
23.) Terrarium – Vedora
24.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws

Persian are fun and are Barbacoa when Dee joins them. Great song from Caroline Marie‘s band. Hana played a great show a while ago and I can’t wait for her new album. OK, let’s listen to a little evolution in action.

25.) Chop Wood/Carry Water – Zola Turn
26.) Dragged Around The Universe – Queen Tangerine
27.) Void – The Lavas
28.) Popular Crowd – SWALE

Swale are going to dress up as Black Sabbath and play the Paranoid album the Saturday before Halloween. Alice Austin and Julia Austin were in Zola then changed the band to Queen then to the Lavas, so I thought it would be fun to listen to those three together. OK, there’s not much time left. On Saturday lots of musicians will assemble for Ladies Rock Lotto Fall 2016 and will form bands in the morning and perform later that night. It’s a benefit for Girls Rock Vermont. Here are a couple of songs by prominent supporters Linda Bassick and Samara Lark Brown.

29.) Super Sexy Science Party – Wave of the Future
30.) Tell Me – Linda Bassick
31.) High Water Mark – Belizbeha

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. I usually play a lot of music from bands who play in Burlington and from all over Vermont, but tonight let’s take a trip around New England and check out some cool songs from the past and present.

1.) Two Sleep Arms – Lendway
2.) The Loops (We’re Those Kids) – The Mockingbirds
3.) Uh Oh – Slowdim
4.) Lean In – When Particles Collide

Particles used to live in Maine but have moved to New Hampshire. They will be doing a tour soon, so check them out if you like to rock. Slowdim are from Boston and have some amazing songs. The Mockingbirds were a 90’s band from Rhode Island. That’s such a great song, and highlights the struggle for musicians to be able to get health care, among other things. Lendway were from Vermont and I miss them. Michael moved to California but the other three guys formed The High Breaks and Matt Hagen is in a few other bands too. OK, it’s time for the next song on the album Bernie Sanders recorded with 30 VT artists back in the 80’s.

5.) The Banks of Marble – Bernie Sanders
6.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
7.) New Atlantis – Aaron Flinn
8.) Flicker Flutter – Alpenglow

That’s another song from their brand new album Callisto. I had to play the Aaron song because it’s so good, and it’s been raining so much today it reminds me of an underwater kingdom. I love the song about Bernie that really highlights how Bernie’s policies, when enacted, can help make a beautiful city and help people get health care, even musicians. The imagery in that song is so clear. I love the song by Bernie that shows how he has kept the same message for such a long time. Unwavering. One of the great musicians to come out of Burlington has a birthday today. Here is a tiny bit of the music that she has brought to this world.

9.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
10.) Dragged Around The Universe – Queen Tangerine
11.) Void – The Lavas
12.) Wing To Me – Alice Austin
13.) Left One In The Rain – Alice Austin

I had to play Rain, since it’s been such a damp day. That is from a recent ep. Wing is from her solo album To A Star In The Yard. Alice started in Zola then moved to QT, then The Lavas before heading out on her own. Thanks for all the great music Alice!! OK, this next song has been running though my head lately.

14.) Neighborhood – Black Rabbit
15.) Righteous – Rough Francis
16.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
17.) Bootstrap – Mac Swan & Black Holly
18.) Be Aggressive – Be Aggressive

Aggressive are from Bradford but come up to rock Burlington now and then. Matt Hagen from Lendway plays bass with Holly, and the metal/punk band uses a banjo instead of guitar. Matt also plays bass with Hen who just have bass, drum, and vocals. Great song from the last Francis album. I can’t wait for the next one. Great song from Rabbit. This next band are playing Saturday at Radio Bean

19.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
20.) Crow King – Binger
21.) Kids – Wren Kitz
22.) Doris – Wren Kitz

Those are the closing two pieces form Wren’s new album For Evelyn. He is doing a release show for the album tomorrow. Binger are playing tomorrow at Radio Bean. This next band just had their Kickstarter funded and have begun recording their first full album. It can be a wild ride to see if a band gets a Kickstarter funded and I’m so glad they made it. Here is one form their first EP.

23.) Afterall (Glad We Made It) – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
24.) Last Love – Myra Flynn
25.) Naive Melody – Strange Machines (W Hayley Jane)
26.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow

Such a lovely and powerful song from Crow. They are from Rutland. Machines are from Boston and come to Burlington now and then. That was recorded in February this year at Nectar’s. Great song from Myra. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week. Ta ta.

27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s very dark and almost time for Halloween, so tonight I will play some spooky scary songs. This is the time of year when the line between our world and the world beyond is very thin. I usually invite my friend from beyond, Mr E. Ghoul, to join me, but it’s just a little too early and the line between our worlds is still to far to cross. Yes, he is having an issue with Incarnation Dysfunction. There are several ways ghouls can cross into our world. Let’s begin with one of the more fun vehicles.

1.) Voodoo Camaro – Wide Wail
2.) Crazy Hearse – Barbacoa
3.) With The Dead – Vultures of Cult
4.) Oh My God – Sarah Blacker

Nice tale of angels and devils from Sarah. She lives in Salem, MA but comes up to Vermont to haunt us now and then. Fun, seasonally appropriate song from Vultures. Some souls prefer to travel in the crazy hearse and some the voodoo camaro. It’s just matter of choice. Up next, is one of the scariest concepts that mortals can deal with, sarcasm.

5.) I’m Thrilled – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
6.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara
7.) Funeral – Dirtminers
8.) Raising The Dead – Carraway
9.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates

Such fun tales of terror from Phil and Carraway. Funeral is a cool song from the Miners. Great song from Hana. Hopefully, she will come back and play for us sometime in the near future. Phil and the band will be at The Skinny Pancake tomorrow and will play a set of Elvis Costello and one of their own. They are one of every band in town who is playing in the next couple of days. This is a great song from a classic Burlington artist.

10.) Graveyard Before Dark – Alice Austin
11.) One More Grave – The Contrarian
12.) Gothic Bloodsucker – Zola Turn
13.) Vampyre – Dave Jarvis Band

Classic from Burlington’s ’90’s. The Zola song is from the first album. Killer tune from Casey Merlin Rae who was a writer and musician in town for many years. So, we’ve heard songs about specific beasts like zombies and vampires, so here is one about the generic category of monsters.

14.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service
15.) Monsters – Cold Sweat
16.) A Place Both Beautiful And Strange – Vultures Of Cult
17.) Demon Moon – Crazyhearse

Killer doom and gloom song from hearse. I love the moody instrumental from Cult. Sweat make the point that monsters don’t have to be supernatural. Great new Doom song. Let’s now turn our sights to magic for a song recorded at the Radio Bean

18.) I Put A Spell On You – Marco Benevento and Kat Wright
19.) Devil – farm
20.) The Death Of Tim Lewis (poem read over the end of Devil and beginning of Devil Knows) – Tim Lewis
21.) Devil Knows My Name – Great Western

Killer version of their new song recorded live at Nectar’s. Great song by Farm about the struggles in life. Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band will be at Nectar’s on Saturday. This song is about a bar that burned down and people died and their ghosts still reside.

22.) Black Cat – Black Rabbit
23.) Ghostified – Persian Claws
24.) Killing Ghosts – Better Things
25.) Ghost Train – Jerichovox

I love the spooky sound of that song. Ghoul called me and let me know some ghosts prefer to take the train to the other side, not just a car. That one is dedicated to him. Killer song from Better. Great rocker from Persian. This next band weren’t around long but played some solid shows.

26.) Planning My Funeral – Poxy
27.) Space Weed Zombies (live) – Wave of the Future
28.) JC And The Beast – The Mountain Says No
29.) Children Of The Grave – Jesus Christ and the Hallucinogenic Allstars

Killer cover of the Sabbath song from the Saratoga NY band who come to town now and then. Mountain and Wave will play at Finnegan’s tomorrow at 10. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town, and that it didn’t scare you too much. Goodbye. Sayonara.

30.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It was an eventful week in our country and solar system. Lots of good and bad things happened. The coolest thing was the eclipse of the moon. It really gives you a perspective of your place in the universe, and shows the complex beauty of this place we get to live in. Celestial events are one of the universal things that everyone can share in. Children are another. We can all relate to the idea of getting older and seeing children born and growing and see the magnificent cycle of life. We have a local artist who plays music for kids every Friday at the Radio Bean. She just released an album of those songs. This is one of my favorites and always reminds me of the magic of life. This is Puff The Magic Dragon by Linda Bassick on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Matter Of Time – Eric George
2.) Puff The Magic Dragon – Linda Bassick
3.) Rame – Francesca Blanchard
4.) Moonlight In Vermont – Willie Nelson

I just loved seeing the moon and wanted to play that one and be reminded of this summer when Neil Young had Lucas Nelson sing that one for us at the Essex Fairgrounds show. Francesca is releasing her new album Saturday in Stowe. If you like that song, check it out. Sorry about mixing up the first two song. Live radio, what can you do? If you like the Eric song, he’s releasing the album tomorrow at the North End Studio. Great song from Linda. I may get to more later. OK, here is the next song on No Need To Beg.

5.) Grass Is Always Greener – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
6.) The Night Syd Barret Died – Colin Nicholas Clary
7.) Boys With Guns – Chin Ho
8.) Film Called Life – Jer Coons

Jer has made a lot of cool music to add to our town. I wanted to play a Chin song and picked that one because of yet another school shooting in our country. As long as we have lots of legislators who identify as pro life and pro gun, we can expect these sorts of things to keep happening. One of these days maybe we will get tired of it and find ways to stop it from happening. I saw Colin play that song at Radio Bean a couple of weeks ago. He was so nice to send me a copy. I love that it mentions Radio Bean, Pearls, The Monkey House and Club Metronome. It also mentions a band. Keep that in mind for later. Great song from Phil Yates and the band. This next song has been running through my head this week, so I thought I’d share.

9.) ComeTooLate – Paper Castles
10.) It’s Happening – Anachronist
11.) Good Witch – Cricket Blue
12.) The Lion Sleeps Tonight – Linda Bassick

Another fun song from Linda. Sweet song from Cricket. I love that song from Anachronist! OK, sit back, relax, light up some incense, flip on the lava lamp. Let’s drift for a while.

13.) Armadillo – Swale
14.) Galactic Cannibalism – Wobblesauce
15.) The High Pass – Ozric Tentacles

Ozric are an English space rock band who played last Tuesday at Higher Ground. It was such a great show and I love how fast and fluid Ed is on the guitar. Wobble are from Boston and were the first band on. They were pretty fun and did a great version of that one. I’m sure they will be back. Hmmm, Swale. OK, let’s rock. This band was mentioned in the Colin Clary song.

16.) Round Sum – Cave Bees
17.) Be Aggressive – BE AGGRESSIVE
18.) Imaginary – Envy
19.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS

It’s so stunningly cool that we found actual water on Mars. I had to play the Francis song to celebrate. Killer song from Envy. Be just played Metronome with the Queers and a couple other bands. I like the Cave Bees too. I still have dad’s car for a bit so Tuesday night I made the last minute decision to go see Ozric. It was raining so hard I could barely see. I took Patchen road to get there, since I couldn’t drive faster than 25mph anyway. The other day Andrew X Smith asked people to post rain songs, so I posted this one.

20.) Left One In The Rain – Alice Austin
21.) In The Rain – Plan B
22.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy

Sweet song from Burlington’s ’90’s. I have so many fond memories of seeing Plan Be at Nectar’s, all those years ago. Killer Alice Austin song. So, have you ever gone to a show. Have you ever been in the know, or gone to a show with someone in the know? Have you ever had backstage passes?

23.) BS Passes – Black Rabbit
24.) You Are My Sunshine – Linda Bassick
25.) So They Say – The New Siberians
26.) Statistik – The Mountain Says No

Love that song from Mountain. Is it time for the new Siberians album yet? Another fun song from Linda. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Sayonara.

27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a beautiful night in the Queen city and there is a ton of stuff happening this weekend. Grace Potter is filling the waterfront with killer local and national bands Saturday and Sunday. It’s Pride week. The Art Hop is happening in the South End. Before I get to all the great stuff coming up, I want to mention a show I caught last week. Rue Mevlana put on a truly stunning spectacle of stage and music. They wove casual and classic stories with a hypnotic light and image show. Here is a hint of what the music was like.

1.) Hermaphroditus – Rue Mevlana
2.) Empty Frequency – Rue Mevlana
3.) Magenta Man – Rue Mevlana

That show was beyond words, which is unusual for me. OK, Grace is bringing a few national bands this weekend, but here are some wonderful local bands who will be there too.

4.) I Forgot – Maryse Smith
5.) Give Me All Your Love – Madaila
6.) Running Away From Home – The Snaz
7.) Womb With A View – Heavy Plains

Four really cool songs from four really cool bands who are all going to play great shows this weekend on the waterfront. Tomorrow at the Art Hop these bands are playing at Arts Riot and nearby.

8.) Coming Down Again – Waylon Speed
9.) See You At Eight – Villanelles
10.) Staring Out The Window – ROUGH FRANCIS
11.) Let’s Go Crazy – Prince

I saw Prince once (thanks Kevin Joseph Ryan) and he was amazing, Unfortunately, Prince is not actually playing the Art Hop. However, a bunch of local musicians, with Craig Mitchell singing, will play a show called Operation Prince. It should be a wild time. The other three are playing at Arts Riot and that will be a great time as well. A little farther down Pine st, these next three bands are playing at Zero Gravity Brewery. The singer for the first band was also part of the Rue show.

12.) Toejam – The Toes
13.) We’re Closed – Blue Button
14.) Alienation – Black Rabbit

Black Rabbit have a new drummer and are ready to rock us hard. BB rock hard too. The Toes are so delightfully quirky, and rock hard too. I’ve seen this next band several times in town and am always blown away. They are a killer rock band and two of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. I’m so psyched for their show next Wednesday at The Monkey House.

15.) Intro – Slingshot Dakota
16.) May Day – Slingshot Dakota
17.) Wave – Slingshot Dakota
18.) Grudge – Slingshot Dakota

I just saw that song on bandcamp and really liked it. Wave is a killer song from the first album. The first two are from the second. I can’t wait to see you Carly Comando and Tom Patterson!! OK, it’s time to play the last song on the stunning album JV. I guess I have to start a new album next week.

19.) Statistik – The Mountain Says No
20.) I Don’t Know How To Love Him – Jesus Christ Superstar
21.) Superstar – Jesus Christ Superstar

The Mountain Says No are playing the Art Hop on Saturday, so if you like that song, Go Check Them Out! I played the two songs from Jesus Christ Superstar in honor of my father, who died suddenly on Tuesday. That was, maybe, the only music that we both really loved. It’s hard knowing that he will never be there again, while wondering where, if anywhere, he is now. It’s been a long few days, but there have been so many wonderful people sending good thoughts that I can feel the love being sent to me and my mom and brother. I want to just play some of the music that has inspired me and made me feel love. Do not be offended if your music was not played, I’m just grasping for any lifelines that I think of. I don’t have enough time in the show to grasp even a third. I love you all for how you have helped and know we will all be there for anyone going through such a tough time. I want to start with a song from a man who’s love even radiates through social media posts. Last week I saw Joe Adler, who recently lost his father, talk about seeing a bird every time someone has died, and feeling like their soul might be in the bird. I don’t have the song Little Bird to play, so let’s start with the above mentioned, love radiating, Aaron Flinn.

22.) Scattered Birds – Aaron Flinn
23.) Dreams Elope – Joe Adler
24.) Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone – Kiki’s Lost Nation
25.) New Appreciation For Sunshine – The Cush

I want to thank you indeed. Thanks for all the kind words, all of you. Life is full of joy and pain and dad always wanted to help the downtrodden. I think this song is highly appropriate.

26.) Joyless – Swale
27.) Ornan’s Song – Dirty Blondes
28.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
29.) Today Is Tomorrow – The Red Telephone

I always got such a timeless feeling from that song. Thanks Matt Hutton. Thanks Phil Yates, and OMG thank you Raph Worrick. Thanks Rebecca Rogers, Diane Sullivan, and make sure you send lots of love to Ornan McLean and his family, because they need it too! Amanda Gustafson, Eric Olsen, you’ve been fantastic. OK, here is another song that I’ve just always loved and really want to play.

30.) Once Upon – Vedora
31.) Sequoia 2 – Binger

I just love that song too. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I always play a Fish song after my show, because I love his music and his ideas and his fantastic way of expressing them through his very intense lyrics. This week I just got an album I’ve been waiting for and just love this song. I don’t have to be up early so I can hang out a bit later tonight, so let’s go.

Song after: Empire Of The Clouds – Iron Maiden
The Great Unraveling – Fish

recording ends, music keeps playing

The Show Must Go On – Queen
Why Does Love Got To Be So Bad – Bob Wagner and the Book ‘Em Blues Band
Child In Time – Deep Purple

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s been a beautiful week in Burlington and tonight the town is hopping. There are people all over the place, lots of cars and motorcycles driving up and down main st. The kids went back to school this week, but it’s still a great summer night in town. Tonight I want to start with the upcoming Presidential campaign that is shaping up. No matter what you think, it’s important to elect smart compassionate people who are aware of the subtle intricacies of foreign policy. This first song is about AQ Kahn, the father of the Pakistani atomic bomb, and a cute ditty about unrequited love. Please choose leaders who know more about these kinds of things than rock stars. This is My Atom Girl by the Dirtminers on Wbkm and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) My Atom Girl – Dirtminers
2.) Great Escape – Jeremy Gilchrist
3.) Devil Knows My Name – Great Western

Yea, I finally got a copy of that song that has been played all over Burlington for the last year or so. Thanks Ryan Osswald. Killer song from the politically aware and very thoughtful Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter. He played a pretty cool show at Radio Bean last Saturday. Yes, when choosing a Presidential candidate, it’s nice if they have a good understanding of the American experience, but as the late great Bill Hicks (AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story) once said, “It’s a round world last time I checked” OK, back to music. Burlington had a wonderful guest come and play at Nectar’s for us last night. His name is Yonrico Scott and he’s played with the Derek Trucks Band and dozens of others. He was joined by a bunch of excellent Burlington musicians like Bob Wagner, Shane Hardiman, Josh Weinstein and others. Kat Wright got up and sang a couple of songs with him, which was pretty cool.

4.) Them Changes – Yonrico Scot
5.) You’ll Be The Sky – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
6.) Buttonz – Binger
7.) Man On The Side – Joshua Glass Music

I went to Radio Bean and saw acoustic Barbacoa then some of Sammich, which featured Dalton Muzzy from Binger on drums and Josh Glass on keys. They were pretty cool. I saw some of their set, popped over to Nectar’s for most of Yonrico Scot’s first set, then caught the end of Sammich. It was a fun time. In 2013 a well liked and regarded local DJ passed away from leukemia at age 38. Andy Williams, also know as DJ A-Dog, created such love that there was a huge party in his memory last year at Arts Riot. This year the party is on Saturday and is at both Nectar’s and Club Metronome with tons of DJs all day and night, and a show from Rough Francis.

8.) U Thought U Nu-Funk intro… – DJ A-Dog
9.) Exit Strategy – Rue Mevlana
10.) Righteous – ROUGH FRANCIS

I’m pretty sure Francis really though A-Dog was righteous, so I wanted to play that one. Rue are playing a show in a couple of weeks called Motley Rue. Could be interesting. OK, here is the next song from JV.

11.) King Grifter – The Mountain Says No
12.) We Need Bigger Knives – As We Were
13.) Circumstance – Tokyo Storm Warning
14.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight

I love that song, and miss Doll Fight! Classic ’90’s Burlington rock song from Tokyo. I haven’t caught up with As in a while and would really like to. Killer Mountain song!! I first saw this next band when they played one of the legendary parties at Max Krauss‘ house. He moved to Boston and joined them for a new EP.

15.) Auxiliary Girl – Night Slice
16.) Flipside – Kimberly White Project
17.) Bomb – Envy

Classic from Burlington’s ’90’s. I totally cheated with Flipside since KWP play in the Carolinas, but a local musician, who now lives down there, turned me on to them, and I wanted to play a song. Thanks for the heads up Brian Wardrep. This next band played around New England some time ago, had a beer named after them at Vt Pub, then eventually broke up. They are doing a reunion show at Higher Ground on September 5th.

18.) Ocheh (Someday I) – Currently Nameless
19.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
20.) Tune Of An Onion – Currently Nameless

Sean Daily, aka Milton Busker, used to play with Nameless so I though it would be fun to toss one of his songs in between two of theirs. He’s playing Aug 30 at Radio Bean with his new band The Grim Work. This next band played around from 2003-2012 and released this compilation called When Nobody Was Looking. They featured Adam Rabin who went on to join Elephants Of Scotland, and totally flew under my radar. Rats. .

21.) Attempt No Landing Aria – Mailbox
22.) Micronesia – Mailbox
23.) The Other Room (live) – Elephants of Scotland

Elephants are a long way into the third studio album. I can’t wait. Tomorrow at Radio Bean is Vermont Joy Parade, Duke Aeroplane & The Wrong Numbers, and a solo set from Anna Pardenik.

24.) Trouble Of Your Bretheren – Anna Pardenik
25.) This Land Is Your Land – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders

Getting back to the beginning, if you want a leader who will take care of your bretheren Bernie will do the job nicely. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

WBKM CREW

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only WBKM.org. I’ve been working way too many days in a row (one more tomorrow), so I just threw together sets of music from different bands. I thought it came out well, except for that one mistake. Oh well, live radio.

Song before: A Rock Star Bucks A Coffee Shop – Neil Young

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. We’ve seen lots of cool nights and cool mornings and warm days, but no real heat. There was a really cool sunset tonight but it’s 9pm and totally dark now. I’m going to dedicate this song to everyone who works for a living.

1.) I Got A Job – Maryse Smith
2.) 15 Steps – Maryse Smith
3.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith

Yes, you guessed it, I’m playing sets of music from a few bands to really go deep and let you see how good they are. Maryse is a great performer, has vividly real lyrics and is always impressive. Burlington always seems to have buskers playing music on Church st all summer long.

4.) Busker – Abbie Morin
5.) Shadowproof – Abbie Morin
6.) Better Half – Abbie Morin

Abbie is playing tomorrow late night at Radio Bean. Soon after, she is hitting the road to get her music out there. Best of luck! OK, let’s go classic Burlington.

7.) Wally Rides The Ferry – Zoot Wilson
8.) Killer Bee Bop – Zoot Wilson
9.) Mystery Blues – Zoot Wilson

Zoot is deservedly a legend in this town. OK, let’s keep the cool mystery theme going.

10.) Mysterious Mystery – Persian Claws
11.) Warm Chills – Persian Claws
12.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws

I just love the super cool sound of the Claws. This next band is playing at Manhattan Pizza and Pub Saturday.

13.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
14.) Could You Be The One? – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
15.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates

Great stuff from Phil and the guys. Hey, do you know what’s great for killing zombies? Weapons. You know what my favorite weapon is? Rock And Roll.

16.) Rock And Roll Is My Weapon – Ninja Custodian
17.) That’s When I Reach For My Revolver – Ninja Custodian
18.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian

I saw Ninja a ton of times at Nectar’s back in the lat ’80’s and early ’90’s. They were always stunning. Now it’s time for the next song on JV, the brilliant debut album from The Mountain Says No.

19.) Long Term Sermon – The Mountain Says No
20.) JC and The Beast – The Mountain Says No
21.) The Bomb – The Mountain Says No

All of those songs are so great. Thanks Mountain!!! This next band have been rocking this town for a decade or more.

22.) Scorned Woman – Dirty Blondes
23.) Oh Dirty Blondes – Dirty Blondes
24.) You Don’t Like Me, Do Ya? – Pinhead

Rats, I thought I had Ornan’s Song lined up. Sorry about that. Let’s continue on through the Pinhead set.

25.) Be A Good Citizen – Pinhead
26.) New Age Woman – Pinhead

If the Wards brought the punk scene to town, Pinhead took it from there, moved it into New Wave and lead the groundwork for the tremendous scene we now have in Burlington. This next band play out a lot and are one of Burlington’s best. Happy yesterday Birthday Eric Olsen.

27.) Edible – Swale
28.) Edible #2 – Swale
29.) Popular Crowd – Swale

Hmmmmm, Swale. OK just enough time for one more set.

30.) Tibbar Tibbar – Black Rabbit
31.) Rejected – Black Rabbit
32.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

Hmmmm, Black Rabbit. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
