I had a great time seeing music last Friday at Light Club Lamp Shop. I had a long streak of seeing music and flowers in Canada and seeing more music and doing a radio show and was ready for a night off when a cool show flew into my radar. I worked until 5:30 and had plenty of time to go home and make a turnaround and take the lovely walk downtown. I got in close to the 7:30 showtime and bar was full of people. It was a bit warm then cooled down a bit for the first show with air conditioning at the lamp shop.

The show began with a European folk vibe with The Lindbergh Baby. Scott Broderick sang and played acoustic guitar and was joined by his wife Amber on vocals and musical saw, Annabel Lee on electric violin and Michael Moynihan played bodhran and some drums later in the set. They sang about Alice Blue and a glimmer in a mermaid’s eye. They sang about running away, from an upcoming album. The songs all had a nice strength to them and were lovely and enchanting. They sang a song about mortal enemies known as farmers and bankers and dedicated it to people who like to grow and eat food. They sang about holding your hand while the sun is still shining. They upped the rock pace a bit with Big Bad Bob (Robert Ferbrache) sitting in on pedal steel for a song about election day. They sang a song for the fans of HP Lovecraft that had a nice chaotic pop drone. They sang an old revolution song about the Green Mountaineers then closed the set with a rocking Media Boss. It was a fun and lovely and powerful set. (Per Scott the set went: Alice Blue, Siren’s Song, Runaway, Old Glory, Lil’ Number, Election Day, Cassilda’s Song, Ballad of the Green Mountain Boys, Media Boss).

I was pretty wiped out but ran into Johnnie Day Durand and we talked about the variances in musical saw players and were joined by a ton of cool people. Somewhere in the middle of the conversation a gentleman named P.D. Brown stepped onto the stage. I think he was from Aberdeen Scotland but I could be wrong about that. He began by reciting an eerie poem called The Raven Speaks that had lovely supernatural tones. He moved on to a story but it was still told in meter. It was about giant sisters and a millstone and vikings invading and all sorts of fun stuff. He recited another cool poem/story about a heroic English knight who marries an Elvin woman and has great luck until he scorns her kind and she disappears and his life falls apart. Every moment of his set was enthralling.

I chatted with Johnnie and everyone a bit more then a woman named Alice Karlsdóttir took the stage and sang a song. Per Scott, she has a band called Verdandi and she’s an author. She sang a song about Freyja going into the underworld in search of riches and had the room captivated.

At that point I was drained. I knew there was another band on but headed out with a heart full of music and poetry.
