I had a great time seeing music Friday night at Radio Bean. It was a snowy day but I had plenty of time to get home and settled for a moment before taking the lovely walk downtown for the 10pm show. The night began with Jackie and Eric from The Leatherbound Books. Jackie told the story about how the first song often was sung in the present tense but an older version recognized the challenges of the moment with a hopeful eye to the future. In that spirit her strong and gorgeous voiced filled the room with Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. They followed with a great version of Joni Mitchell’s River, then closed their set with an original about how it’s OK to feel sad at Christmas, It had poignant and funny lyrics and a wonderful yuletide fiasco reference. It seemed like everyone in the room could relate.

Up next Linda Bassick and Patrick McAndrew were joined by Jesse Taylor and they rocked out a fun Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. They gave it a little Springsteen ending that made the crowd smile. Silver Bells sounded sweet and Let It Snow was just lovely. They wrapped the set on a high note with Jungle Bell Rock.

The final band had Jackie on Bass and vocals, Houston on drums, Johnnie Day Durand on musical saw and glockenspiel, Aya Inoue on guitar and vocals and Samara Lark Brown on electric ukulele and vocals. They opened with Little Drummer Boy and the Pa rum pum pum pums were especially cool. Samara and Aya sang most of the songs, and both sounded great, but when they sang together it was even nicer. When Jackie joined it it was nicer still. They played a fun version of Blue Christmas but towards the end Jackie started singing White Christmas and blended the words perfectly into the melody. It was impressive, and Johnnie’s saw work only made it more magical. Jackie took lead vocals for a strong version of Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) that filled the room with joy. Samara arranged a darker minor key version of Carol Of The Bells that was very cool. They rocked out a lively version of Holiday Road from the Vacation movies that made everyone smile. Samara began singing O Holy Night. It got more amazing when Aya joined in and more amazing still when Jackie entered the mix. Do You Hear What I Hear sounded great and they followed with a rocking version of Happy X-Mas (War Is Over). They kept the pace in full rock mode for I Wish It Was Christmas Today to close the night.

It was a little late and I had to work a little early in the morning, so I quickly headed out and bounced home full of holiday cheer.
