Wolfhand

I had a great time seeing music Monday night at Nectar’s. The idea of some nice doom and gloom heavy music appealed so I took the lovely walk downtown a little after 9. I got in and settled and about 9:30 Wolfhand began to play. Their music is heavy and rich and sounds like swimming in heavy water. They are heavy enough to get away with playing Metal Mondays but psychedelic enough to attract people like Mike Luoma, who has seen them more times than I. Imagine Obscured By Clouds era Pink Floyd only a bit more heavy and all instrumental, and you’ll have an idea of what they sound like. I delightfully lost myself in the churning music as they evoked images of black winds and plaguebearers. They played songs about bandit cults and about when the devil arrives. They closed the set with a ride on the Doomed Convoy. I love getting immersed in their sound.

I hung out for a bit and chatted with Mike, and after a medium long set break, Nechromancer began to play. They describe their music as EBM, Electronic Body Music, and it has elements of EDM with more of a heavy goth approach. The vocals began close tot the cookie monster zone, but spent most of the night in a goth gloom zone with distinguishable lyrics. The band had a singer/guitarist, drummer and two keyboard players so there were a lot of synth industrial sounds to the songs. The keyboardist on the right was dancing around the whole night but the keyboardist on the left was all business. I caught New Order and Bauhaus vibes and something reminded me a little of Lestat’s band in Queen Of The Damned. They played a song about social contagion and said there is a video for Unhallows Grieve. They played a cover I did not know but really enjoyed. They played a song about a twist of fate and a new one called The Harrowing. They were a little extra dancy, but still heavy, on the next one, which was the embodiment of EBM. They rocked out Intersect and closed by hailing their Vampire queen.

I headed out shortly after that. There was a System Of A Down cover band coming on after, but I was tired and wanted to get home and get rested up for the next adventure. I’m so glad I put in the effort to go out.

Song before: Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to open with a serious heavy song or a fun happy one, so let’s do both.

1.) Elevator – SWALE
2.) You Gotta Move – Hayley Jane and the Primates
3.) Don’t Tell Me To Smile – The Red Newts
4.) Love Me Forever – Steady Betty

That is such a lovely song from Betty. I agree with the Newts that you should never tell a woman she has to smile. She can figure out whatever expression she chooses. Nice rocker from the Primates and great song from Swale. I want to thank Ben Slotnick – Mandolinist for turning me on to this next artist.

5.) Feeling Small – Abby Sherman
6.) Liar – Maryse Smith
7.) [name] – Adrienne Cooper Smith
8.) Modern Love – Ouzkxqlzn

That’s such a cool take on the Bowie song. Lauren Costello is just amazing. I love the electric banjo on Adrenne’s song. That’s a classic from Maryse and a great new song from Abby. OK, this next artist is back in town and is playing a show Saturday the 11th at Light Club Lamp Shop, and a lot of us are excited. Here is a set of her music.

9.) Lithuania – Hana Zara
10.) The Cats – Hana Zara
11.) Megan’s Song – Hana Zara
12.) Hartford – Hana Zara
13.) Womb Of Amanda – Hana Zara

I love getting wrapped into her songs. I hope you did too. Definitely go to the Lamp Shop this weekend. That last song makes me think of fathers and mothers and brothers and sisters and makes me think of this song.

14.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
15.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget
16.) L Ron Hubbard – Humble Hero
17.) Black, Blue, And White – The New Siberians

Great rocker from the Siberians. Hubbard is such a fun song, I had to play it again. Cool cover from the masters of cool covers. Great song from Joe. OK, here is the next song on The Uncanny Doom Service.

18.) Collider – Doom Service
19.) Not True – Peg Tassey MUSIC
20.) Vampire Queen – Nechromancer
21.) Space Odyssey – Aliendog
22.) Doomed Convoy – Wolfhand

I got to see Wolfhand and Nechromancer at Nectar’s on Monday and both were really cool. I caught Aliendog a couple of weeks ago and loved their show. I’m psyched I have a song to play now. Great songs from Peg and Doom. This next band are doing a release party for their new album MSP3 Counter Attack on Saturday at Higher Ground. OK, enough of me, let’s just listen to music for a while.

23.) Big Box Law Enforcement – ROUGH FRANCIS
24.) Queen City – Cave Bees
25.) Lean In – When Particles Collide
26.) Walk On By – Rough Francis
27.) Book Of Zoo – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
28.) Super Powers – The Dead Shakers
29.) Oh You! – You’re You! – Ruckzuck

Such a great song from Ruckzuck. Hopefully, they will come back and visit again soon. I love that Shakers song. It was great seeing David and the Zookeepers in a library in Fairfax. The tour continues to Vergennes tonight. I love how Francis are staring racism in the face and fighting for justice for all, the way it should be. Particles will stop by town in a few weeks, so I wanted to get you ready. Bees are opening for Francis on Saturday. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
