Tonight’s local music radio show will stream at WBKM and can be heard over the air at 107.1FM. It will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows:

Song before (Then Came The) Last Of May – Blue Oyster Cult

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin tonight with a woman who has come to town for years to share her music with us. Here is the brand new song she just released.

1.) Walkabout – Sarah Blacker & New England Groove Association
2.) Mama – Ivamae
3.) Powder – The New Siberians
4.) Lovely Day – gneiss

That song makes me so happy. I hope it does the same for you. Great song from the Siberians debut album from a few years ago. Ivamae are so wonderfully talented. Great new song from Sarah. OK, here is the next song from Lights Camera Action and is the last song on the Lights EP.

5.) Sleepwalker – 1881
6.) Just Another Day – The Nancy Druids
7.) Alan’s Garden – Ruckzuck
8.) Last Day Of May – The Red Telephone

Today is the first of June so I thought that would be appropriate to play. After seeing Ruckzuck so much last week, I’m still pretty enthralled with them and wanted to play Garden again. Great rocker from Nancy and wonderful song about insomnia from 1881. That’s a lot of sheep to count. OK, I almost saw this band last Tuesday at Light Club Lamp Shop but I worked just late enough to miss them

9.) Sri Lanka – Ellen Degenerates
10.) I Will – Camp Howard
11.) The Field – The Dead Shakers
12.) Look At The Lilacs – Binger

The lilacs around town have begun to fade but what a show they have put on for the last couple of weeks. I missed Ellen at the show last week, but did catch Howard and Shakers and really enjoyed both. OK, here is a song that really speaks about Burlington Vermont.

13.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
14.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
15.) Ornan – Dirty Blondes
16.) TFAY – Elephants of Scotland

I heard that John M Whyte has joined Ornan McLean in the Blondes and both play in Elephants so i had to play those two. Can’t wait to see him play a show with them. Great songs from Doubtfire and Violint. There’s a guy around town named Joe who makes and brings us lots of music. Here is one of his songs.

17.) Stratosphere – Joe Adler
18.) Forsythia – Cricket Blue
19.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara
20.) 45 (live) – Clever Girls

Such a complex and beautiful song from the Girls. Great song from the enchanting Hana Zara. Cricket are so wonderful and so is Joe. OK, here is a Burlington classic.

21.) My Old Boyfriend – Wide Wail
22.) Ladybug – Ninja Custodian
23.) Always Monica/Down At The Duck – Chin Ho
24.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker

Great newish song from Milton. Classics from Chin, Ninja, and Wail. OK, here’s a brand new song from Swale. They are just about to drop the new album There’s No One Here and this is a breezy instrumental.

25.) Here’s Where You Are – SWALE
26.) Every Last One Of Us – Swale
27.) Last Love – Myra Flynn Music
28.) Once Upon – Vedora

Classic song from Caroline Marie. Her band Steady Betty is playing around town for Jazzfest. Myra is playing at least one show and doing a songwriting workshop, which sounds cool, as part of the huge festival. Hmmm, Swale. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: The End Of The World – Skeeter Davis

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Tonight is the 200th show that I’ve done on WBKM and it’s been a joy bringing you some of Burlington’s best music over the past 4 years. Tonight, I will pull out a whole bunch of classic songs. Let’s begin with one of my favorite songs from 2007.

1.) Star – The New Siberians
2.) Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot
3.) Black Sheep – Kelly Ravin
4.) Green Doors – Lowell Thompson Music and Crown Pilot

Lowell and Kelly play in a band called The Welterweights and they play at Higher Ground on Saturday. Thanks for sponsoring our station Higher Ground! Andriana is amazing and I loved seeing her play that song last Friday. Hmmm, Siberians. OK, it’s time to play the next song on By My Side.

5.) Way With Words – Kat Wright
6.) Harvest Moon – Silver Bridget
7.) Unspoken – Anders Parker
8.) When She Sleeps – Peg Tassey MUSIC

Great gentle and powerful song from Peg. Anders is just amazing. Bridget are playing some enchanting shows these days. Yet another great song from Kat. This next band released this song last year and it quickly became a favorite. They are playing at The Monkey House on Saturday.

9.) The Bad Year – Carraway
10.) Paper Train – Dave Jarvis Band (Daffy Mal Yinkleyank)
11.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
12.) Popular Crowd – SWALE

Swale are playing great shows and are about to drop a new album on us. They have a Kickstarter going if you want to help out. Zola and Dave put on great shows in the ’90’s and Dave is now in Agent 802. Great song from Carraway. This band played around in the early 2010’s.

13.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws
14.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
15.) Sun In The Sky – Ninja Custodian
16.) You – Screaming Broccoli

Broccoli played in the late ’80’s and early ’90’s. Same for Ninja. I want to send Sun to anyone going through a rough time. It’s always been a source of strength for me. Doubtfire are out playing great shows and have a new EP coming soon. Hmmm, Claws. OK, here is another of my favorite songs.

17.) Alienation – Black Rabbit
18.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight
19.) Bloodboy – Envy
20.) Black & Red – ROUGH FRANCIS

Francis are a tremendous band and have a new album coming soon. Envy played great shows in the ’90’s and one last year. Doll Fight rocked us in the 2000’s and Rabbit are rocking us now. This next song is one of the most intense songs that got played in town many times over the years.

21.) The Drone – The Cush
22.) Release The Beast – The Mountain Says No
23.) Knight Ov Swords – The Contrarian
24.) Bionic – The Red Telephone

Such a great song from Matt Hutton and Sean Toohey as they moved from Envy to RT. Casey Merlin Rae is the Contrarian and is amazing. Great song from Mountain’s first album and an absolute classic from The Cush. This next band are playing around as The High Breaks but did an album of Sabbath.

WBKM

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM will run from 9-11pm tonight. You can listen over the air on both sides of the Champlain Valley or from the Facebook link above. It will go as follows:

Song Before: The Stars (Are Out Tonight) – David Bowie

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want to begin by thanking Higher Ground for sponsoring us. They have New Year’s Eve and the night before New Year’s Eve shows with Madaila coming up soon. Let’s begin tonight with a gorgeous song from a band who played a bunch of great shows in 2016 and should play a bunch more in the new year.

1.) Love Me Tender – Silver Bridget
2.) Can We Go There? – Bethany Conner Music
3.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara
4.) Counting On A Ghost – Elephants of Scotland

Elephants put out a terrific album this year called The Perfect Map. Hana played a great show for us this year in Burlington. Bethany is a cool performer with a ton of potential in her future. Bridget are so cool. OK, here is the next song from Shovel Down.

5.) The Snake – Seth Yacovone Band
6.) No Match For Her – The Decentz
7.) You – Screaming Broccoli
8.) The Invisibles – Black Rabbit

That’s from a couple of years ago but Rabbit are rocking hard and strong and should have a great 2017. Broccoli and Decentz are from Burlington’s early ’90’s and early ’80’s and helped create the scene we have now. That’s quite the rocker from Seth and the band. This next song may be my favorite from 2016.

9.) Black 17 – The New Siberians
10.) Last Night – Carraway
11.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
12.) Drug Me Up – Ninja Custodian

Ninja’s music always drags me up when I’m down. Doubtfire put out a great EP this year. Carraway and the Siberians put out tremendous albums this year. This next song is an older one but the band got back together for a show this year.

13.) Finger Prison – Envy
14.) Msp2 – ROUGH FRANCIS
15.) Naomi’s Back – Fire The Cannons
16.) It’s Real Again – Zola Turn

That’s a classic from the ’90’s. Cannons kept us rocking through the early 2000’s. That’s a newish one from Francis. I can’t wait for the new album!! Hmmm, Envy. This woman rocked the ’90’s and is still helping music be made.

17.) Not True – Peg Tassey MUSIC
18.) Papertrain – David Jarvis
19.) Ex-Files – Better Things
20.) The Art Of Giving In – 1881

That’s a song from the brand new and brilliant album Action. Great song from Better who released that earlier this year. Dave’s song is from the ’90’s but he’s back in town making music. It’s always great to hear Peg. This band will light up Higher Ground with fun this weekend.

21.) Children Of The Stars – Madaila
22.) Come Dance – Kat Wright
23.) Piano In Every Room – gneiss
24.) Break – Slingshot Dakota

That’s a song from my favorite non-local album from this year. Besides, SD come and visit us often. Piano is such a comforting song. Great song from Kat’s new album. Same for Madaila. OK, let’s go back a couple of years and rock.

25.) Release The Beast – The Mountain Says No
26.) Willow II – Tyler Daniel Bean
27.) Silver And Gold – Waylon Speed!
28.) Inner Revolution – Adrian Belew

Everyone is excited that Adrian will play ArtsRiot in March. Waylon always put on great rock shows. Great new song from Tyler. Mountain rock hard and will have a new album soon. I feel like I’ve been moving through time tonight so let’s play this one.

29.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws
30.) The Ballad Of Tom Smith – The Skamaphrodites
31.) Shy Spiders – Villanelles

Spiders is one of the great songs from 2016. I want to thank Daniel Bolles for his many years as music editor. Thanks for being such a champion for music in our town, and for taking me seriously. I hope your 2017 brings great new adventures. Well, I’ll be off next week, but I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again the week after next.

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I thought of a fun idea and pulled it off pretty well.

Song before: The Old And The Young – MIDLAKE BAND

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a cool and snowy night in Burlington. We got 11 inches Wednesday but the roads and sidewalks are pretty passable. Thanks DPW! Tonight I’m going to alternate new and old songs to highlight the great talent in this town. Let’s start with a couple of songs from the soundtrack to some cool underwater Vermont videos. This is Maidstone by I See Fish People on WBKM and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) Maidstone – I See Fish People
2.) Burette’s Green River – I See Fish People
3.) Deal – Bud & Budd ~ The Kind Buds

Great guitar playing on the Dead cover. Lots of people in Vermont still love the Dead and The Buds played a killer version of that. Nice build in the middle! The Fish people CD just came out this week, and is as new as it gets. OK, let’s play another new song. Doug McAllister was in Ninja Custodian a long time ago and is now in California with a new band called Super Music Band.

4.) Not Everything Is About You – Super Music Band
5.) Monkey Business – Ninja Custodian
6.) Under Bright Stars – Alice Austin
7.) Seeds And Stems – The New Siberians

It really has been a while since the Siberians album came out. They should have something new soon, and I think Ryan Power is working on it. Great new song from Alice. That’s Doug singing the classic Ninja song. It was cool to hang out with Ted Pappadopoulos from the Siberians at Manhattan Pizza and Pub last Friday at the Black Rabbit show. Here is the last song on their EP Lipstick And Dynamite that I’m playing all the way through.

8.) Carnage – Black Rabbit
9.) Kick The Can – Cave Bees
10.) Time To Save The World – Carraway
11.) Medula Mamblongatta – Strung Out

I remember seeing them at the Chicken Bone Cafe. That was a while ago. Carraway just put out an excellent new EP. Classic from the Bees who have been in an out of the scene for a long time. Man those Rabbit shows with Jane Boxall Percussion on drums are getting really intense. Here’s a song that came out last year.

12.) Mirrors – Vetica
13.) No More Sex – Pinhead
14.) In Comes The Tide – PossumHaw

Great song from the Waiting and Watching album from earlier this year. Classic song from Pinhead. OK, let’s head back to the ’90’s for a great piece of music.

15.) Poem For Torin/Ethan’s Stoned – Peg Tassey MUSIC
16.) Eliza – Alpenglow
17.) Let It Shine – Rachel Brown

Rachel used to unleash her beautiful and powerful voice on us back in the ’90’s. Great new song from Alpenglow’s Chapel EP. Here’s another new song that I just love.

18.) 40 Days – Better Things
19.) Politicians In My Eyes – Death World Wide
20.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS

Francis just re-released the Maximum Soul Power Album this year on Riot House Records. Death was their fathers band, then Dannis and Bobby were in Lambsbread playing reggae when I got into the music scene. They rocked a bit harder before that. Up next is another classic rocker from the ’90’s.

21.) Decide – David L. Jarvis
22.) Before The Night – Swale
23.) Let Up – Construction Joe

It’s been a while since I thought of Joe and that is a great song. I love that Swale song! I want to dedicate this next song to the magnificent Joe Adler who just lost his father. Somehow I just know he’s up there looking down at Joe with lots of love.

24.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
25.) Extended Werewolf – farm

There’s only so much time indeed. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we.

(yea, not my best ending!!)

Hey guys, Tim here for one more song. It’s a Fish song as always. He’s just played some killer shows and has some sold out ones coming up. Here’s the first song on the new album, A Feast Of Consequences. This is Perfume River by Fish, and even though he’s from Scotland, this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music on WBKM.

intro

From our…(nothing on the vocal meter, play song, reset microphone, realize song is in the setup phase, stop and reset it) From out small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Sorry I was out last week, but I’ve seen a ton of music in the last few days. I’m going to play a bunch of bands who played The Precipice last week. Tonight’s show is dedicated to my brother Ken who went to the show with me. Let’s start with a band I saw a couple of weeks ago. This is Demon Moon by Crazyhearse on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Demon Moon – Crazyhearse
2.) The Drone – The Cush
3.) Waterlanding – Swale

Swale played a killer set at The Precipice: A Vermont Music Festival last week, including a killer version of that song. I love the new Crazyhearse song and something in the sound made me want to play it into the Cush. OK, it’s time to continue with Ninja Jane. I’ve always loved this song.

4.) It’s Purple And It Sparkles – Zola Turn
5.) Miss Vermont – Chin Ho!
6.) 1.21 Jiggawatts – Wave of the Future

Wave’s EP will be released next week, but Luke Richer sent me a copy today. Nice recording by the band and Ben Maddox. Classic songs from Chin and Zola. Friday at the Precipice there were a lot of staggeringly talented bands that make you want to dance. This is one of them.

7.) Afterall (Glad We Made It – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
8.) The Ballad Of Tom Smith – The Skamaphrodites
9.) Angatta – Barika

Barika and ISB had people dancing all Friday night. Swale did a set of covers with various singers. One was Dan Bolles, so I wanted to play one of the songs by his old band to give you a hint of what it sounded like. Also, in the cover set, Nichole sang I Love Rock And Roll. Here’s one of her songs.

10.) On Top Of The World – Dwight & Nicole
11.) Into The Light – Great Western
12.) Vim – Jane Boxall
13.) Sail The Sea – Gregory Douglas

Gregory sang a song with Jane Bee during her marimba set. That was a song with his voice and the one before was Jane solo. Nice song from Great Western who are playing tomorrow at Nectar’s. I saw Maryse Smith last week at Radio Bean and at the Precipice where she played with Michael Chorney. She played this both times and I’ve been singing it all week.

14.) 15 Steps – Maryse Smith
15.) Guitar – Michael Chorney
16.) This Isn’t Your Parade – Crazyhearse
17.) The Globe – Landlady

I still remember clearly the show Landlady played at Signal Kitchen a couple of weeks or months ago. I wanted to play it because I love it, I saw Guardians Of The Galaxy today, and when listening to the Crazyhearse song, it made me think of that song. Wow, two songs from their new album made me think of great songs. That’s pretty impressive. Backing vocals on that song are by Rebecca Rogers. Michael and Maryse were great at the Precipice. Hey, you know who else played a song with Swale in the Swaleoke set? That’s right, James Kochalka Superstar.

18.) Old North Ender – James Kochalka
19.) Trans Am – Barbacoa
20.) Everyone Likes To – Swale
21.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS

RF played a killer set at the Precipice. They also did the Swaleoke thing with Amanda Gustafson on keys, Tyler Bolles on bass, Eric Olsen on guitar, Paul Comegno on guitar, Julian Hackney on guitar, Urian Hackney on vocals, and Bobby Hackney Jr. on drums. Their collective version of Now I Wanna Be Your Dog might be my top local music event ever. Maybe not, but it’s way up there. Barbacoa played a killer version of Trans at the Precipice. Saturday, we had to leave a bit early, since Ken had to work in the morning. We missed most of this band’s set, but did catch this song.

22.) Cats Were Born – And The Kids
23.) Hallelujah – The Dirty Blondes
24.) First Kiss – Peg Tassey MUSIC
25.) Antiphon – MIDLAKE BAND

Thanks to Mike Luoma for turning me on to, and getting me a ticket to see Midlake when they played Higher Ground last week. As an acoustic three-piece, they sounded very close to the full band version, when they played Antiphon. Peg Tassey did not play the Precipice, but did show up to check out some of the music. The Bondes played a killer show Friday night. Too bad Becky was in jail in Cleveland, but Diane Sullivan did a great job with the vocals. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

One more song before I go. If more people understood what this next song means, the world would be a happier place. We are groot.

Song after: What Color Is God? – Fish

Midlake (acoustic) at Higher Ground July 31, 2014   Leave a comment

I had a great time seeing music last night. A few months ago Mike Luoma brought home an album by a band called MIDLAKE BAND. He played it a few times, and one of the songs got stuck in my head. I’ve listened to Antiphon several times, and often play a song from the album before or after my radio show. I was excited when I saw they were coming to town, but the show was acoustic, and at the time I do the radio show.
I got the night off from the radio show and Mike got me in as his guest. We arrived shortly before showtime and the large room at Higher Ground was steadily filling. After a short wait, three members of the band took the stage and started to play. With two acoustic guitars and a keyboard player, who played flute a couple of times, they created a full and lush sound and I was quite impressed. The songs did not have the thunder, but did have the full lush sound. They played three or four older songs, and several from Antiphon, including a gorgeous version of the title song. The singer’s voice was crystal clear and carried the songs nicely. The guitars weaved a beautiful spell and the keys were sometimes driving piano, and sometimes lush soundscapes. The large audience was very appreciative and seemed to be having a good time. When they announced they had one more, I though for sure it would be their “hit” The Old And The Young, but instead they pulled out a cover of I Shall Be Released. They did a great job with it, and played it with passion. It sounded noticeably different from their other songs, but great nonetheless.
When they wrapped up, I was pretty tired, so I took the easy ride home, instead of staying for Band Of Horses. I knew I would need it to be an early night, since there was tons of music about to happen the next day.

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It was sunny and warm today and is a beautiful spring evening in Burlington. Tonight, I’m going to start with a band I used to go see all the time another life ago. This is Cold Sweat on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Hey Ernie – Cold Sweat
2.) The Mime – Joe Adler and the Rangers of Danger
3.) Seen Man – Endless Jags

I was excited to check out Jags again at Waking Windows. They were just as great as I remember. Joe is playing tomorrow at Radio Bean, I used to drive all over to see Cold Sweat. They’ve been playing out a bunch and maybe writing something new. This next song was another highlight of Waking Windows.

4.) Statistic – The Mountain Says No
5.) 88 – Wave of the Future
6.) Uh Oh – Slowdim

I just bought the full Slowdim album today and love the way the guitar soars on that one. Wave always put on a fun show and I’m bummed I missed the one at Manhattan Pizza and Pub with Mountain on Saturday. I had to work late that day. Here is the next song on Dancing With The Big Guy.

7.) Hooray, Hurrah – Ninja Custodian
8.) Blodline – Crazyhearse
9.) Always Monica->Down At The Duck – Chin Ho!

I’ve always liked Monica and it goes nicely into Duck. Nice live version. Crazyhears are playing Sunday at Radio Bean, so I may have to go check that out. What a fun Ninja song. Congratulations to Casey Hades Rae and Faith Swords on getting married! Here’s Casey playing all the instruments.

10.) Purpose And Object – The Contrarian
11.) Home Away From Home – Elephants of Scotland

Elephants played to 700 prog fans this weekend and got a standing ovation. I love them whether they are home, or away from home. Way to go guys!
