Song before: It Was A Very Good Year – Frank Sinatra

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last night I went to Radio Bean and saw a wonderful performance by this band.

1.) By Design – The Nancy Druids
2.) Totally Submerged – Totally Submerged
3.) Paranoid – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
4.) Drivin’ All Alone – The Parts

We’ll skip the Parts for a moment. That’s the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song. Great work making that Sabbath song sound like Surf rock. Cool song form Submerged who play all over Vermont all the time. The Druids played a beautiful version of that song last night. So, last Saturday was Radio Bean’s 17th birthday party and they did the usual thing where 80 or 90 bands played from 8am to 2am with 15 minute sets. The Parts kicked off the show. Most of the rest of the show is made of a few of the many bands who played.

5.) Every Time We Say Goodbye – Tiffany Pfeiffer and The Discarnate Band
6.) Faded Movie Reel – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
7.) The Birds Of Park Slope – Eastern Mountain Time
8.) My Old House – Andriana Chobot

Most of those bands played early in the day. This next set is a mix of bands who played early and later.

9.) True Hue – Ivamae
10.) Angela Carter – Cricket Blue
11.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
12.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget

Silver Bridget opened their set with a little bit of (When I Was Just Seventeen) It Was A Very Good Year then dropped it into Paint It Black. It was great. I missed Cricket and Milton but assume their sets were amazing. Ivamae was great and played a couple of new songs. This next band gave us a choice of this song or one that I did not know. They played the latter so I will play this song that they did not.

13.) Paper Doll – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
14.) Heat Sleep – Ryan Power
15.) Californ-i-A – Ryan Ober
16.) Gonna Stay Up All Night Long – Eames Brothers Band

I missed Eames and the two Ryans when I was in the other room seeing other bands but did catch the full Gators set. I just barely missed this next artist.

17.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
18.) Come Dance – Kat Wright
19.) Strings – Binger
20.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger

Joe and the Rangers put on a brilliant set. I want to send that out to my brother Ken and all of my brothers and sisters, ie you. Great songs from Binger, Kat, and Francesca. So, when Swale played they did mostly covers and opened with Amanda Gustafson singing the heck out of this song.

21.) Rebel Girl – Bikini Kill
22.) Popular Crowd – SWALE
23.) Trans Am – Barbacoa
24.) Juliet – Cave Bees

The Bees played a powerhouse version of that song. The tiny amount of Barbacoa that I caught was brilliant. If you listen to Popular and imagine that band singing Rebel you will have an idea of how Swale’s set started. This next band played an amazing version of this one.

25.) Destroying Everything They See – Blue Button
26.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
27.) Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT
28.) Purple Rain – Prince

On Saturday WBKM is turning 10 years old and celebrating at Nectar’s. Seth Yacovone will be there, Aaron Flinn will be there, The Full Cleveland will be there and a bunch of local artists will play Prince songs and be lead by Craig Mitchell. I hope you can stop by. Dino finished off the Bean birthday party. Hen played in the afternoon and Button were as amazing as always. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

29.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

intro

From our small city to the great big world these are the Sounds Of Burlington. 2.) Alan’s Garden – Ruckzuck
3.) Future Shock – Ruckzuck
4.) Miss Cancy – Ruckzuck

I want to thank Ruckzuck for playing three times last Sunday and for their relentless touring and over the top music. It just fills my heart and I hope it does the same for you. Thanks also to Ryan Cohen for relentlessly making us sound great. OK, it’s almost Halloween. Let’s begin with a song about the dead.

5.) Stardust For Dessert – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

10.) Ninjas Vs Zombies – Phil Yates
11.) Oh My God – Sarah Blacker & New England Groove Association

18.) Giving Up The Ghost – Aaron Flinn
19.) Raising The Dead – Carraway

23.) Halloween Jam – The Dead Shakers

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM.ORG will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time Thursday October 19th. It can be streamed from our website or our Facebook link here: WBKM It will go as follows.

Song before: Stars Die – Porcupine Tree

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’m struck by the passing of people and the passing of stars that have happened recently. Let’s begin tonight with a cosmic connection that we all share.

1.) New Moon – Clare Byrne: Song and Dance
2.) Solitude – Alpenglow
3.) Resist – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
4.) Free – Francesca Blanchard

That’s a cool new song from Francesca and that’s a cool new song from Jeremy. The Alpenglow song has been running though my head lately so I thought I’d share. Great song by Clare. When I saw the first post about #MeToo I had that sinking feeling that almost every woman that I know was going to post one. I think it’s terrible that women have to endure this but I think it’s great that this is all coming to light. We should deal with this openly and move on to the path of just treating every other human being with respect and care. Come on people, I know you can step up. Here is a song about a woman being stalked and attacked and how it feels. I hope it helps us all move away from this behavior.

5.) Elevator – SWALE
6.) Mom Vibes – Thick Business
7.) A Cut In The Night Sky – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
8.) Mother’s OK – Split Tongue Crow

Great song from the Rutland Band. Cool song from Matt that we recorded a couple of weeks ago at Robot Dog Studio. Thick Business are from Boise Idaho and played last night at The Monkey House and they were amazing. Swale opened the show and it was just a great night. OK, this song has been running through my head a lot lately too.

9.) Able To Breathe – Peter Burton
10.) In The Country – Bardela
11.) Creatures – Hayley Jane and the Primates
12.) On My Way – Hover

That’s a classic from Burlington’s 1990’s. Cool new song from the Primates who are an amazing band live. Lovely songs from Bardela and Peter. OK, let’s play the next song on the Surf Sabbath album that I am playing all the way through, song after song, week after week.

13.) Sabbath Bloody Sabbath – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
14.) Inevitability Of Death – The Tragically Hip
15.) Mary’s Line Into This View – Ouzkxqlzn
16..) Oh You, You’re You – Ruckzuck

Last time Ruckzuck were in town I saw them 3 times in two days. They will be at The Monkey House on Sunday around 7 then at Radio Bean at midnight. I’ll see about working out that third show…Great song from Lauren Costello‘s band. Just for the record, I checked and the name of the band is not technically pronounceable. The music is nice and that’s all that matters. A lot of us are feeling the loss of Gordon Downie from The Tragically Hip. He was such a force of life it’s hard to imagine that he is gone. They rocked Burlington, and all of Vermont, for many years. Great song from the Surfers. OK, this band played a great show last Saturday at The Monkey House.

17.) Juliet – Cave Bees
18.) Again The Rain – Pinact
19.) Flypaper – Persian Claws
20.) Double Line – Black Rabbit

It was so cool to see Rabbit play Flypaper recently at the Monkey House. I thought I’d put a Rabbit song after the Claws song to give you a hint of what it sounded like. Pinact are from Scotland and played with the Cave Bees at the Monkey House show lat Saturday. Both bands rocked hard. OK, let’s keep rocking.

21.) Black Blue And White – The New Siberians
22.) King Grifter – The Mountain Says No
23.) At The Hundredth Meridian – The Tragically Hip
24.) Springtime In Vienna – The Tragically Hip

I saw the Hip on a boat cruise and then open for Eric Johnson at Memorial Auditorium. I saw them headline Memorial many times. I’ve seen them in Montreal and Verdun and on at least three mountains in Vermont. I’ve seen them at Higher Ground, both the old one and the new one and thanks for sponsoring us HG. I saw them recently at Shelburne Farms and the Flynn. Every Show was great. Thanks guys!!

25.) New Orleans Is Sinking (live) – The Tragically Hip

Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, which will be the annual Halloween show.

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM.ORG will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time Thursday October 5th. You can stream it from our Facebook page link here: WBKM It will go as follows.

Song Before: I Don’t Like Mondays – The Boomtown Rats

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s been a tough week to be a music fan what with the shootings in Las Vegas by a man who’s mind just broke, then the untimely death of Tom Petty. The only think I can think of to do is to celebrate the people who are out there making art and music and spreading love and joy every day. Let’s begin tonight with a new band that I don’t know a lot about but are engaging the world with their music.

1.) The Mountain Carol – The Mountain Carol
2.) The Crow – Bardela
3.) Homesick – Jakals
4.) Safe To Say – SWALE

It gives me no end of comfort to know that Swale are out there making and playing great songs like that. Jakals are from Boston and came to visit The Monkey House last Saturday and put on a wonderful show. That song really stood out. I caught Bardela at the Monkey House on Tuesday and loved how Arty LaVigne and Cooie DeFrancesco‘s voices blended. The other two guys in the band were pretty good too. Cool song from Carol. OK, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for another edition of WBKM live at Robot Dog.

5.) Done Saving Bones – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
6.) A Cut In The Night Sky – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
7.) Frozen Winning Streaks Of A Gambler – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
8.) Paper Doll – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
9.) A Monster’s Holiday – Matt the Gnat and the Gators

I want to thank Ryan Cohen for making us sound great and thank Matthew Bryan Hagen and Caroline Marie for such an amazing performance! Also, thanks to Burlington Beer Company for the tasty libations. Matt just had a birthday so Happy Birthday Matt again. OK, lets move on to the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song week after week. It is an album that features Matt on guitar.

10.) Children Of The Grave – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
11.) Hurricane Jane – Hayley Jane and the Primates
12.) Lovely Day – gneiss
13.) Come Kiss Me – Near North

North are about to release a beautiful new album called Most Every Night at the Monkey House on Saturday. Gneiss are at Red Square tomorrow evening. The Primates just released their new album We’re Here Now. I love it when they do Hurricane live and am happy to have a copy of the song that I can play. The Breaks are so great, whether they are in their usual mode or the Sabbath mode. OK, these next two bands will play with North on Saturday.

14.) The Invisibles – Black Rabbit
15.) Machu Picchu – The Mountain Says No
16.) The Mime – Joe Adler
17.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons

Sometimes it’s easy to feel lost and like there is no home and that song touches on that. Just remember, we all feel that way and can help each other make a home in our vibrant community. Joe is a true treasure and brings us lots of music. That’s such a great song. Cool songs from Mountain and Rabbit and I can’t wait for Saturday. So, a few weeks ago The Tsunamibots made me the director of robot propaganda and I thought I better try and live up to the title.

18.) Robotic Meltdown – The Tsunamibots
19.) Robots Making Love – Pinhead
20.) I Think I’m turning Into A Robot – Wave of the Future
21.) Rise Of The Robots (Reprise) – The Tsunamibots

I hope you enjoyed that fun set by such creative musicians. This next song was recorded at Robot Dog Studio and features Matt Hagen on bass.

22.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
23.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS
24.) The Space Between – The Nancy Druids
25.) The Great Forgetter – The New Siberians

Such a fun song from the Siberians. Druids played a great version of that one last week at the Monkey House. Francis are a treasure and that song always rocks. Great rocker from Hen. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
