Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows.

Song before: Winter – Tori Amos

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It was in the 70’s over the weekend and today it’s cold and snowy. Welcome to Vermont. Let’s begin tonight with a lovely singer songwriter who graces our state.

1.) Can You Love Me Too? – Bethany Conner Music
2.) Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot
3.) When The Night’s Get Long – Carraway
4.) Bird On The Sea – The New Siberians

I just love that Siberians song. As February ends the nights just seem to stay long so I thought those songs would sound like Burlington. Andriana is playing at Red Square on Saturday at 5pm if you are looking for cool music. Great song from Bethany. OK, let’s play the next song on By My Side.

5.) You’ve Got Problems – Kat Wright
6.) What If? – Madaila
7.) Magenta Man – Rue M.
8.) Kentucky – Cricket Blue

What a lovely piece of rocking dramatic music from Cricket. I just love the drama that Rue add to the music. If you like Madaila, you may want to head to Club Metronome tomorrow night. I think you will like the band they have playing. Great song from Kat and the band. OK, on Saturday this next artist is finally coming back to town. I’ve seen him a dozen times (or so) at Metronome over the years, though not for a long time. The first time I saw him play was back at Hunts with his band The Bears. I’m very excited for his show Saturday night at ArtsRiot. It’s sold out, so I hope you have a ticket.

9.) Young Lions – Adrian Belew
10.) Ampersand – Adrian Belew
11.) Newrotica – Adrian Belew
12.) E – Adrian Belew

I’m so psyched for Saturday! OK, I saw this band last week and this song has been stuck in my head ever since. I hope it gets stuck in yours too.

13.) Eggshell – The Mountain Says No
14.) Winter – Dave Jarvis
15.) Always Monica/Down At The Duck – Chin Ho

Happy Birthday Andrew X Smith and thanks for all the great music over the years. It’s finally cold enough to play the Dave song. Hmmm, Mountain, hmmmm. So, I just got a couple of new songs from a great band who play Burlington once or twice a year. Here’s one of them.

16.) Dying Stars – Slingshot Dakota
17.) I Didn’t Know I Was A Wizard – Colin Nicholas Clary
18.) A Bottle Of Whiskey Later – Crazyhearse
19.) The Whiskey Always Wins – When Particles Collide

Particles played a great show at Manhattan Pizza a few weeks ago. Hopefully they will be back soon. Hearse are just a great band. Cool song from Colin. Great new song from Slingshot! OK, this next band features a local guitar player who has been in a couple of bands and takes lots of great concert photos. Some of them are hanging in The Mule Bar in Winooski and they are doing a show opening tonight. Luke Awtry Photography has been done a great job documenting the local scene in pictures. Let’s play one of Luke Adam‘s songs from one of my favorite bands.

20.) Linea – Vetica
21.) Mr Reed – Seth Yacovone Band
22.) Jackbooted Thugs (Have All The Best Drugs) – Anders Parker

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM will be broadcast from 9-11pm US Eastern Time and can be listed to from the Facebook page link above. It will go as follows:

Song before: In The Blue Light – jane siberry
intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. I want to thank Higher Ground for filling our town with music, sponsoring our station and for helping this first artist release his new album tonight.

1.) Every Evening After – Gregory Douglass
2.) Stumble – Andriana Chobot
3.) The Alchemist – Pours
4.) Give Me All Your Love – Madaila

Madaila are a fun band and that is such a fun song. I love that Pours song and like to pull it out now and then. Another great song from Andriana Chobot. OK, let’s play the next song on Giant Places.

5.) Water Rose – Lendway
6.) The Interrogator (Enhanced) – Milton Busker
7.) Sometime Next Week – 1881
8.) Beaten Down – SWALE

Nice Beatles sound on most of those songs. 1881 were great last night at Nectar’s. I’m loving Milton’s new album. Hmmm, Lendway. This next set is inspired by a man who was beaten, but is nowhere near down.

9.) This Land Is Your Land – VT Artists
10.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 VT artists
11.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday

Such loving tributes to the man, and such great words by the man himself. OK, let’s play some rock and roll. I’m so psyched for the ENVY Reunion Show! tonight at The Monkey House that I found a way to be in two places at once. Here are a couple of Envy songs and a couple of related songs.

12.) Imaginary – Envy
13.) 1,000 Lies – Sean Toohey
14.) Today Is Tomorrow – The Red Telephone
15.) Sunday – Envy

That’s a classic from their Distorted Greetings album, as was the first song. Sean and Matt Hutton got together last year for the Places We Return RT album and that is one of the cooler songs from it. Great solo song from Sean. On bass with Envy will be Julia Austin so here is a song from her old band.

16.) Chop Wood Carry Water – Zola Turn
17.) All My Life – Wide Wail
18.) Finder – Madelines
19.) Circumstance – Tokyo Storm Warning

Those were all songs from the revered mythical 1990’s Burlington music scene. There is a myth that says the scene ebbs and flows but if you look deep enough there are always amazing bands out there. This is one of the great bands who played during one of the alleged ebbs.

20.) Trading Bullets – Fire The Cannons
21.) Dementalist – Villanelles
22.) Symptom Of The Universe – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
23.) Tornado Head – Barbacoa

Barbacoa are opening for Envy tonight. I love the surf versions of the Sabbath songs that the Breaks do. Villanelles were great for all four Wednesdays in July at Nectar’s. OK, lets ease up a bit as we head towards the close. This band played 20 songs in an hour last Saturday at Nectar’s.

24.) BS Passes – Black Rabbit
25.) Angela Carter – Cricket Blue
26.) One For One – Andriana Chobot
27.) The Great Wide – Gregory Douglass

I thought I’d end where I began, with great songs from Gregory and Andriana. Cricket will play on Saturday at The Skinny Pancake and they are a great duo. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM in the Champlain Valley, also streaming at our website, will go as follows:

Song before: Soul Eternal – Anderson Ponty Band

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. It’s been a beautiful week in Burlington, but something unusual happened late Monday night. A meteor with a blue trail sailed over Vermont and could be seen all around New England. Let’s begin with a brand new song that speaks of meteors.

1.) Oysters – Jane Boxall Percussion with Miriam Bernardo
2.) All The Same To You – Milton Busker
3.) Spirit Won’t Fall Down – Rachel Brown
4.) Sharktopus – Villanelles

That’s a cool new song from Villanelles cool new album Blue Heart Attack. Spirit is a song from Burlington’s ’90’s and I still remember seeing Rachel and how powerful her voice is. Great song from Milton who is at Light Club Lamp shop tonight at 8pm. Jane just put out a new album called Field Notes. Miriam’s voice just makes that song. OK, it’s time for the next song on Callisto.

5.) Look Ahead – Alpenglow
6.) Too Much – Slingshot Dakota
7.) Hallelujah – Dirty Blondes
8.) Counting On A Ghost – Elephants of Scotland

That’s a brand new song from the brand new Elephants album The Perfect Map. I had a great time seeing the Blondes at Nectar’s on Monday and while listening, I knew I wanted to play that one for you. Great new song from Slingshot. Their new album Break is still keeping me listening to it. Great new song from Alpenglow. This next band are at Light Club Lamp Shop tomorrow.

9.) Edible – SWALE
10.) Falling In And Out Of Sleep – Envy
11.) Finder – Madelines
12.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons

Cannons filled a rock void in the early 200’s and played some killer shows. Finder is a classic from the ’90’s. Sean Toohey and Ann Mindell from Envy are playing in their new band The Nancy Druids at Radio Bean on Friday at 10pm. I really enjoyed seeing this next band a little over a week ago at The Monkey House

13.) Killing Ghosts – Better Things
14.) Say It – Anachronist
15.) Speed Car – Torpedo Rodeo
16.) Paranoid – Surf Sabbath

SS are really The High Breaks when they play Sabbath covers. They did such a great job rearranging the songs into a surf style. I saw Torpedo a few times in the early 00’s and always had a rocking time. I love Say It!! Better should have lots of cool new music coming soon. OK, let’s go back to the ’80’s. Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to go.

17.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
18.) Melt – Chin Ho
19.) East Jabib – REDadmiral
20.) The Summer Of Andy – Cancer Conspiracy

CC played some great music back in the ’90’s. That’s a pretty new song from Admiral. They are playing Sunday at Radio Bean. I played Chin Ho’s cover as an homage to the ’80’s Ladies who have the show before me on Thursday nights at 7pm on WBKM. That song from the Decentz always gets me moving. A former local musician and music writer who has been working at the Future Of Music Coalition, Casey Merlin Rae, has just moved on to a job with SiriusXM. Congratulations. Here is one of his solo songs.

21.) Purpose And Object – The Contrarian
22.) Another Life Ago – The Cush
23.) Before The Evenings Thru – THE VACANT LOTS

The lots used to play around in the early 10’s but are now touring the US and touring the world. Great song from the Cush’s first album. They played that song many times in Burlington. Yea Casey! This next song is pretty new and catchy as can be.

24.) The Feeling Is Strange – Binger
25.) Random Earth – Elephants Of Scotland
26.) For Buddy – Elephants Of Scotland

Those are the two last songs on Elephant’s new album The Perfect Map. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

13th Star – Fish
New Americana – Halsey
She’ll Come Back For You Tomorrow – The Church Band

I had a fun time doing my local music radio show last night on 107.1FM and on the internet at WBKM.ORG. It’s just amazing how much great music we have in this town.

Song before: On The Air – Peter Gabriel

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last night I got a chance to go to WRUV and hang out while the Nancy Druids played live in the studio on their local music show Exposure. The Druids don’t have anything recorded yet, so let’s begin tonight with a song from Sean’s former band, and that will give you a hint of what they sound like.

1.) Teenage Mother Earth – The Red Telephone
2.) Paranoid – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
3.) The Next Instead – Swale

I love the sweep of the Swale song. They will play a fun show next week, but more on that later. The High Breaks play fun and intense surf rock, and recently rearranged several Black Sabbath songs into surf versions. They released them all for free on Bandcamp so I had to play one of the songs. Great song from Telephone. OK, it’s time for the next song on the Bernie Sanders EP that I am working my way through, song after song, week after week until I’ve played it all.

4.) Where Have All The Flowers Gone – Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont artists
5.) Forsythia – Cricket Blue
6.) Dreaming Too Much – Alpenglow
7.) Break – Slingshot Dakota

That is the title song from Slingshot’s brand new album. They are from PA but come to town to play on a regular basis. They will be at the Monkey House May 10th, Another great new song from Alpenglow’s new album Callisto. Cricket have shows coming up in March and April all around New England. I think they have new music coming soon too. So, a week from Saturday, there is a show at Higher Ground to show a movie that was recently made about ’90’s rock band The Pants. They will show the movie, ‘High Water Mark, The Rise And Fall Of The Pants” then Swale will be the house band and lots of local musicians will come up to play Pants songs. Here’s a few that will join in.

8.) High Water Mark – The Pants
9.) Help Wanted – Wide Wail
10.) Satellite – Guster
11.) Hit – Blue Button

Jason Cooley and Eric Olsen from BB will be at the show. Ryan Miller from Guster will be at the show. Amanda Gustafson from Wide Wail will be at the show, and Tom Lawson from the Pants will be at the show. I’m sure lots of others will be there as well. OK, the Surf Sabbath song was so fun, let’s play another.

12.) Children Of The Grave – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
13.) An Obscene Amount Of Debt – Sink Or Swim
14.) Politicians In My Eyes – Death

I was watching Vinyl last week and it was so cool when Politicians played. I thought it would be fun to pull it out this week. Great song from local rockers Swim. The Surf versions of Sabbath songs are so fun. Here’s a song I’ve always enjoyed.

15.) 1965 – The New Siberians
16.) Giving Up The Ghost – Aaron Flinn
17.) Finder – Madelines
18.) The Bomb – The Mountain Says No

Great song from Mountain. Finder is a classic from the ’90’s. Aaron is such a great guitar player and songwriter. The Siberians song just rocks. OK, let’s play another new Slingshot song.

19.) Monocacy – Slingshot Dakota
20.) The Call – Swillbillie
21.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz

Tight always gets me dancing around the studio. I hope you had fun with it too. Great strong song from Swillbillie. I love everything about that Slingshot song. This next song is a new one that has been getting me going lately.

22.) If I Knew – Binger
23.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
24.) This Land Is Your Land – VT artists.

Such a lovely version of that song from some of the area’s finest musicians. I love the lyric in the Bern song. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

outro

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Despite a super warm December, winter has pretty much set in. Let’s begin with some local songs about the cold time of year.

1.) Winter – Dave Jarvis
2.) Christmas Sled – The Mountain Says No
3.) Stylus Of Id – Somah
4.) Northern Memory – The Cush

Such great cold imagery from the Texas band who spent many winters playing lovely music for us. Thanks Cush!! Stylus is all about Orion who appears in the sky in winter. That sled that you got for Christmas, but couldn’t use at the time, well now there is lots of snow and cold, so have at it. Nice song from Dave. It’s a bit of a mellow evening in Burlington, so let’s go with that vibe for a bit.

5.) Good Thing – Maryse Smith
6.) The Night Syd Barrett Died – Colin Nicholas Clary
7.) Eve & Adam – Cricket Blue
8.) Afterlife – Hana Zara

Great song from Hana about living in the space between two lives. Great song from Cricket who are playing shows all over. I love all the local references in Syd. Super strong song from Maryse Smith. Let’s keep the mellow but strong vibe going for a bit.

9.) Letter From The 21st – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
10.) New York My Lovely – Joshua Glass Music
11.) I’ve Been Down – Bob Wagner
12.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band

Such a great song from Kat Wright and the band. Hopefully they will have new music soon. Nice cover done by a killer guitar player and a driving force behind Dark Side of the Mountain, who are playing in Stowe soon. If you like the Josh song check out his band Sammich. Great song from Jeremy Gilchrist. Tomorrow night at Radio Bean Barbacoa will be the backing band for a bunch of local artists playing David Bowie songs. I don’t know if anyone in this next band will be part of it, but they did release this song this week.

13.) Starman – Madaila
14.) Freak Out Friday – Rue Mevlana
15.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
16.) Melt – Chin Ho

Nice cover song from Ho. I thought it would be fun to bookend that set with the covers and stick a couple of new and old classics in between. This next set is for the optimists of the world.

17.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont musicians
18.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
19.) Sequoia 3 – Binger
20.) In The Garden Of Mystic Lovers – Francis Dunnery

Francis is from Scotland but he lived in Vermont for a while around the time he released the album Man. He played Mystic and other song from the album often at Club Metronome. I just love the sentiment from Binger, and the rock. Great words from Bill and Bernie. OK, let’s take a swing through some ’90’s classics.

21.) On My Way – Hover
22.) Finder – Madelines
23.) Bloodboy – Envy
24.) Help Wanted – Wide Wail

Absolute classic from Wail. Great rocker from Envy. Finder is such a fun song with a great riff. I just love the Hover song. This next song is one that has always spoken to me. This is one of the coolest bands to ever play JP’s.

25.) Chester Allen – The World Famous Hanglows.

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week. I’ll say goodbye with the next song on Red Flannel Hash.

WBKM CREW

WBKM CREW

http://wbkm.org/

I just got back from my 98th local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I know it’s almost Valentine’s Day, but I focused more on the minerals that make up our bodies and our earth.

Song before the song before: Ships – Anais Mitchell

Song before: The Cinema Show – Genesis

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a cold snowy night in Burlington but lots of people are walking around and not letting it get them down. Last week I talked about how much of our bodies are made of water. Tonight, I will talk about the remaining amount of minerals, the dust that we are, the dust from where we came and the dust we will become. The earth is a medium where things grow out of and into our world. We start as dust and grow into the world and eventually will return to the dust. Let’s begin tonight with Anais Mitchell and Our Lady Of The Underground on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Our Lady Of The Underground – Anais Mitchell
2.) Garden Flower – Maryse Smith
3.) The Seed (live) – Elephants of Scotland
4.) Sequoia 3 – Binger

We all started from the same root indeed. Humankind began and grew into branching civilizations but we all started from the same root and from the same soil. The soil allows seeds to grow into the world and create flowers and new seeds to go back into the soil, and continue the cycle. Maryse played a sweet version of that Saturday at Radio Bean. Can’t wait to see Elephants in Montreal playing as a side part of the Marillion weekend. OK, let’s step away from the theme and play the next song on Many Things & Many Scenes.

5.) Dreams Elope – Joe Adler
6.) Pocono Pines – Great Western
7.) In The Pines – Vedora

If you want to be out in the pines under a blanket of snow, Vermont is the place to be. It’s so beautiful at this time of year. Nice song from GW. Musicians often start as fans and have other bands that influence the roots of the music they will create. Let’s play a couple of covers and look at some band roots.

8.) Sitting Still (REM cover) – Ninja Custodian
9.) Dizzy (Tommy Roe cover) – Peg Tassey MUSIC
10.) Finder (Madelines cover) – Rocketsled
11.) Rock And Roll Is My Weapon (Ninja Custodian cover) – The Channel Two Dub Band

Ending where we began with that set. The last two were from the Burlington Does Burlington album from many years ago. I love the songs of the band Swale but every once in a while they do a show of cover songs and let people sign up and sing them. They call it Swaleoke. It’s a mixture of pro and amateur singers. A couple of times ago they said I had to sing a song at one, and will do so Saturday night at Radio Bean. I can’t sing so it’s going to be weird. Until then, here is a true Sale song.

12.) The Next Instead – Swale
13.) Asphyxia – Better Things
14.) Black Oil – Doom Service

Oil is part of the earth and helped humankind evolve to where we are but hopefully we can get off it soon. Granted that song is about the X-Files but it’s good to get off that oil too. BT are playing at Nectar’s on Monday and I hope to catch them. Binger are playing on Tuesday and many other days this week. I’m so psyched for the Death World Wide show coming up at the Flynn Theatre tomorrow. This set goes out to my brother Ken who will join me.

15.) Where Do We Go From Here??? – Death
16.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS
17.) Let the World Turn – Death

It’s going to be a great show. Nice cover story in the Burlington Free Press today. I thought I would not have any new songs to play and just before I headed down to the show I got this super brand new song.

18.) The Way It Is – Maryse Smith
19.) Santa Anna – Hana Zara
20.) Tell Me – Linda Bassick
21.) When I Was New – Sarah Blacker

Sarah is busy working on a brand new album. I can’t wait. Linda has new stuff coming too, and may stop into my radio show to play some songs in the coming weeks. I can’t wait for Hana’s new album The North. There are going to be so many great songs on it, judging from seeing them live. That’s the title song on Maryse’s new album that should be out soon. She did a great version of it last week at Radio Bean and I hope her leg heals soon. I’m going to cheat a bit an send this out by request to Skipper Horner

22.) At The Hundredth Meridian – The Tragically Hip
23.) Earth Blues – The Eames Brothers Band
24.) Tallest Trees – Slowdim

Great song from the Boston band that I’d love to have someone bring to town sometime. Nice earthy songs from the Vermont and Canadian bands. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
