Song before: Immigrant Song – Led Zeppelin

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. There was lots of great music in town last week and a staggering amount this week. Let’s begin with a band who blew me away the one time I saw them. They are in town tonight at ArtsRiot.

1.) The World Is A Loud Place – Landlady
2.) Favorite Bag – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
3.) Jessie – The Parts
4.) Hurricane – Landlady

I saw Landlady at Signal Kitchen once and was amazed. I’m psyched they are back in town tonight. This weekend is Art Hop in the South End. There are lots of bands playing and there is one amazing show in an alley by the Green Door which is behind ArtsRiot to the right and not far from Howard St. The Parts are one of the many bands playing there. That’s a brand new song from Phil Yates‘ upcoming album. Yea, Landlady. OK, let’s play the next song from Loose Tooth.

5.) Loose Tooth – Clever Girls
6.) Strawberry Blonde – Dino Bravo VT
7.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit
8.) Bridge To Panda Chaos – Zeus Springsteen

Zeus will be at the Green Door show as will Rabbit and Dino. Great song from Clever. This next band will be at a couple of shows at Art Hop including one at Friends of Jim’s Basement.

9.) 25 Miles Per Hour Blues – Better Things
10.) Voodoo Wave – The High Breaks
11.) America Religious – Caroline Rose
12.) Secret – Madaila

Madaila put on a great show on Saturday when they took over Main St and put up a stage. I caught Caroline’s set at that show and was very impressed. The Breaks are playing Friday at ArtsRiot for the venue’s 4th birthday party with some other bands. This next band are playing Friday by the Green Door too.

13.) Better Than You Think – Eastern Mountain Time
14.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
15.) Vermonter – James Kochalka
16.) Cocktail Hour – David L Jarvis

Dave used to play around in the ’90’s and is back in town. He’s working on a new baroque pop band called The New Victorians so it will be cool to see what that sounds like. I think they will play that classic song. Great song from James about what it’s like to be in Vermont and to not be in Vermont. Francesca will be at Hotel Vt this Friday. This next band played the after Madaila show at Nectar’s last Saturday.

17.) All Down Tonight – SWALE
18.) Staring Our The Window – ROUGH FRANCIS
19.) Not In My Name – Dysfunkshun
20.) Burn – Dirty Blondes

The Blondes, and a couple of other bands, will be at the Dysfunkshun reunion show at Higher Ground on Saturday. Francis and Swale put on amazing shows at Nectar’s last Saturday. OK, here’s a classic Burlington rocker.

21.) Bloodboy – Envy
22.) Nightmare On Elm Street – Savage Hen
23.) Mr Reed – Seth Yacovone Band
24.) I Know, Right – The Mountain Says No

I haven’t caught up with Mountain in a while but love it when I do. Great rocker from Seth and the band. It was fun watching Hen put the Nightmare jump rope theme into song form at the Robot Dog Studio session last week. Classic from Envy. OK, there’s not much time left. Let’s end where we began.

25.) The Globe – Landlady
26.) It’ll Be OK – Let’s Whisper
27.) In The Rain – Plan B
28.) Above My Ground – Landlady

I love how hard that song rocks at the end. Classic from B and quite appropriate with all the rain we’ve had lately. Great song from Whisper and another great one from Landlady. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only WBKM.ORG. I went with the misty rainy feel of the day.

Song before: The Rain Song – Led Zeppelin Official

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. It’s been sunny all week in the Champlain Valley so I had a set of sunny songs lined up. Then today came. It’s been dark and cloudy and rainy all day. Time for Plan B. This is In The Rain on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) In the Rain – Plan B
2.) Mystery – Tapis Bleu
3.) Soft Fireworks – Swale

Swale are playing at The Monkey House tomorrow. Also tomorrow is the benefit for Mark Ransom who was diagnosed with cancer, at Arts Riot, Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I love the swirl in Tapis songs, and what a great song by Plan B. Let’s stay with another strong mellow song.

4.) Northern Skies – The Lindbergh Baby
5.) Mary – Anachronist
6.) The Spy Song – Pinhead
7.) Mysterious Mystery – Persian Claws

Persian are a great band when you want to pick up the tempo. Great song from Pinhead. I finally broke down and bought some Anachronist and really love that song. That’s such a great Lindbergh song. Here’s the next song on Dancing With The Big Guy.

8.) Candy And Dirty Kitty – Ninja Custodian
9.) Weapons Factory – The Wards
10.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight
11.) Grackle Tree – Barbacoa
12.) Trade Show – Endless Jags

I wanted to go deeper into the Jags ep and that is a great song. Barbacoa played The Precipice: A Vermont Music Festival last year they rocked. Dates are out for the Precipice for this year. They are Aug 1& 2 and I got a ticket today. I love that Doll Fight song. Those were classics from the Wards and Ninja. Here’s a great singer songwriter.

13.) All The Same To You – Milton Busker
14.) Lithuania – Hana Zara

I love that song by Hana and am surprised I don’t play it more. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music internet only radio show on WBKM.ORG. I started with some songs that make me soar and played lots of music from bands playing this weekend. I also tossed in a live Pinhead song.

Song before – Immigrant Song – Led Zeppelin

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. Burlington is covered in snow and ice and glistening with beauty. My heart is soaring and I want to play some music to soar to. Will you come soar with me? This is a new song from Paper Castles on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s kind of music.

1.) HelloH – Paper Castles
2.) The Words Will Show – Lendway
3.) I Don’t Know What To Believe – The Red Telephone
4.) Telepathic Headdress – The Cush

Love soaring to the Cush and Red Telephone. The Lendway song reminds me a bit of Obscured By Clouds and I can’t wait until Sunday to see Matthew Bryan Hagen play Floyd with Dark Side Of The Mountain. Paper Castles were brilliant opening up for Stars at Higher Ground earlier this year. It’s cold and icy and snowy so I was looking for a cold song to play. This next singer is playing early on New Year’s Eve. I may try and catch her set at Radio Bean, then head to see Vedora at The Monkey House.

5.) Lithuania – Hana Zara
6.) Dogs At The Door – Milton Busker
7.) ComeTooLate – Paper Castles

I just bought the Paper Castles album Vague Era today and wanted to play a few songs for you. Padraic Reagan has played in town a lot, booked lots of bands in town and is an all around good guy. Milton is playing the Bean tomorrow at 7. If I get out of work in time, I may try and check his show out. Hana is a very talented lady. Speaking of talented ladies, it’s time to play the next song of Alice Austin‘s To A Star In The Yard. This is the big rocker.

8.) Vicarious – Alice Austin
9.) I Made Love To The Dead – Pinhead

That was Pinhead live from Hunts from a long time ago. That had not been released, but my friend Christopher Larrow kept asking them for it, got a copy, gave me a copy, and now I get to play it for you. When Alice released the album, she formed a band and played it all the way through at the Monkey House. Vicarious was moved to the last slot, instead of 10th on the album, because they rocked it so hard. Sean Toohey (on guitar that night) said it should be the closer. To add more music to the weekend The Monkey House turns 7 on Saturday and features lots of great bands like Dino Bravo VT, Blue Button, Black Rabbit, Eastern Mountain Time, Phil Yates, Paper Castles, Wolvings, and maybe more. Here is some of what is to come.

10.) Could You Be The One? – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
11.) Mark My Words – Black Rabbit
12.) Vestibule – Blue Button
13.) Cold – Wolvings
14.) Terrarium – Vedora

Vedora might be the last band I see in 2013 or the first in 2014, depending on when they go on. I’m so psyched to see those four bands on Saturday, and all the others too! On a sad note, Burlington lost one of our own this week when DJ A-Dog, Andy Williams passed away. He was well known and liked in our town and will be dearly missed. Enjoy every moment you can, you never know. I hope you enjoyed checking out my last show of 2013. See you in 2014 for more great music from our town.
