Song before: New Americana – Halsey

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin tonight with a song that was released last week by one of the great bands in town.

1.) Don’t Look Back – ROUGH FRANCIS
2.) Weapons Factory – The Wards
3.) Hippo Nose – Chris Alley All Star Band
4.) How We Roll – James Kochalka Superstar
5.) Hungry Like The Wolf – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger with The Lynguistic Civilians

That was recorded live at Nectar’s a couple of years ago. That’s a new song from James and has all of those Duran Duran references. Such a fun song from the new Chris Alley album. He used to play guitar with The Wards. Francis are so amazing. OK, here is the next song on Black, Blue, and White.

6.) Upstream – The New Siberians
7.) There Are Bigger Men Than Me – Plastique Mammals
8.) Indigo Spanish Fantasy – Jane Boxall Percussion
9.) AV6 – Bad Smell
10.) Interview/Cascade – Andriana Chobot

That’s from a new album that was released yesterday. I’ll tell you more about it soon. Smell will play Higher Ground on Sunday. They feature Jane on drums. She also plays marimba and Fantasy is from the album Zero To Eight Mallets. She is so amazing. Plastique will release a new album tonight at The Monkey House. Great song from the Siberians. So, on Saturday there are three amazing shows happening. One is at ArtsRiot and features this artist.

11.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
12.) Interview/By Design – The Nancy Druids
13.) Interview/45 – Clever Girls

The Girls will play on the 27th at Radio Bean with Julia Caesar, who I’ve been meaning to catch, and others. The Druids will play The Monkey House on the 27. Francesca will be at ArtsRiot that night with the DuPont brothers new band. Sigh, there’s still only one of me. So, last year I developed a live in the studio music series with Ryan Cohen and Robot Dog Studio. Yesterday we released a free album with one song and one interview clip from each of the 16 bands that we recorded. The Andriana, Druids, and Clever Girls songs were from that. Let’s take a dive into more of it.

14.) Interview/Three Feels Right – gneiss
15.) Interview/A Cut In The Night Sky – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
16.) Great Filter/Interview – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
17.) Interview/Able To Breathe – Peter Burton

Great work by all of those bands. Let’s keep diving into the album.

18.) Interview/Hope In The Dark – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
19.) Future Shock/Interview – Ruckzuck
20.) Interview/Car Bomb – Zeus Springsteen
21.) Interview/Sister Blue – Cave Bees

I love the history of part of Burlington’s music scene that Creston Lea tells in the Bees interview. Such great stories and songs from all of the bands. OK, this next band are not on the album. They just released a new EP.

22.) Holy Serpent – Ghastly Sound
23.) Interview/Local Lore – Savage Hen
24.) Interview/A Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT
25.) Waiting – Rough Francis.

I thought I’d end the show where I began. Francis are so amazing. Great song by Dino. Cool story and altered ending to the Savage song. Ghastly rock hard. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM.ORG will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and can be streamed here: WBKM It will go as follows.

Song before: It Was A Very Good Year – Frank Sinatra

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last night I went to Radio Bean and saw a wonderful performance by this band.

1.) By Design – The Nancy Druids
2.) Totally Submerged – Totally Submerged
3.) Paranoid – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
4.) Drivin’ All Alone – The Parts

We’ll skip the Parts for a moment. That’s the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song. Great work making that Sabbath song sound like Surf rock. Cool song form Submerged who play all over Vermont all the time. The Druids played a beautiful version of that song last night. So, last Saturday was Radio Bean’s 17th birthday party and they did the usual thing where 80 or 90 bands played from 8am to 2am with 15 minute sets. The Parts kicked off the show. Most of the rest of the show is made of a few of the many bands who played.

5.) Every Time We Say Goodbye – Tiffany Pfeiffer and The Discarnate Band
6.) Faded Movie Reel – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
7.) The Birds Of Park Slope – Eastern Mountain Time
8.) My Old House – Andriana Chobot

Most of those bands played early in the day. This next set is a mix of bands who played early and later.

9.) True Hue – Ivamae
10.) Angela Carter – Cricket Blue
11.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
12.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget

Silver Bridget opened their set with a little bit of (When I Was Just Seventeen) It Was A Very Good Year then dropped it into Paint It Black. It was great. I missed Cricket and Milton but assume their sets were amazing. Ivamae was great and played a couple of new songs. This next band gave us a choice of this song or one that I did not know. They played the latter so I will play this song that they did not.

13.) Paper Doll – Matt the Gnat and the Gators
14.) Heat Sleep – Ryan Power
15.) Californ-i-A – Ryan Ober
16.) Gonna Stay Up All Night Long – Eames Brothers Band

I missed Eames and the two Ryans when I was in the other room seeing other bands but did catch the full Gators set. I just barely missed this next artist.

17.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
18.) Come Dance – Kat Wright
19.) Strings – Binger
20.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger

Joe and the Rangers put on a brilliant set. I want to send that out to my brother Ken and all of my brothers and sisters, ie you. Great songs from Binger, Kat, and Francesca. So, when Swale played they did mostly covers and opened with Amanda Gustafson singing the heck out of this song.

21.) Rebel Girl – Bikini Kill
22.) Popular Crowd – SWALE
23.) Trans Am – Barbacoa
24.) Juliet – Cave Bees

The Bees played a powerhouse version of that song. The tiny amount of Barbacoa that I caught was brilliant. If you listen to Popular and imagine that band singing Rebel you will have an idea of how Swale’s set started. This next band played an amazing version of this one.

25.) Destroying Everything They See – Blue Button
26.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
27.) Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT
28.) Purple Rain – Prince

On Saturday WBKM is turning 10 years old and celebrating at Nectar’s. Seth Yacovone will be there, Aaron Flinn will be there, The Full Cleveland will be there and a bunch of local artists will play Prince songs and be lead by Craig Mitchell. I hope you can stop by. Dino finished off the Bean birthday party. Hen played in the afternoon and Button were as amazing as always. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

29.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

All Loved Up (live) – Fish
Last American Exit – The Tragically Hip

Joe Adler and the Rangers of Danger in the Winooski traffic circle Rotary Park July 5, 2017   Leave a comment

IMG_5183

I had a great time seeing music Wednesday on the island in the middle of the Winooski traffic rotary. It was my day off and I took it pretty casually but around 5 I put on the black, got set, and took the long walk to Winooski. The crossing from the sidewalk into the circle went pretty easily and I knew that once that hurdle was passed, it would be a great night. I didn’t know the setup for the shows there so I brought a bottle of water but as I wandered in, I just had to visit the beer and wine table.

A little after 6pm Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger took the stage and settled into a long cool jam. The Rangers can vary quite a lot but currently are Dalton Muzzy on drums, Shack Ear on bass, and Braden Winslow on electric guitar. When those three play without Joe Adler they are a band called Binger. Since I love both bands I knew it was going to be another fun show. Dalton’s steady and present drumming mixed nicely with Joe’s rhythm guitar. Shack’s bass ran in fun places and Braden’s super smooth fiery guitar work made sure the audience was rocked hard. They drifted out of the jam into a long Joe song called Stratosphere and the whole thing went a delightful 20 minutes. They brought the rock energy down with the fun Many Things And Many Scenes then delighted the crowd with Dead Flowers. Joe’s song Another Drink Of Water had a funky groove then picked up for the gotta move section. They followed with a song that will be their next single but that Joe has played for a while. It’s the one about the wicked witch and the Dead Sea Scrolls. I love that song and hope it gets recorded soon. A cover of the Police’s One World was fun and towards the end sound man Craig Mitchell sang along and helped wrap up the first set. Oh, and the sound was great all night because, you know, Craig Mitchell.

The set break was not long and the band came back for a heavenly version of Brothers And Sisters. Marcie Hernandez Music had joined them and it was great to hear her sing the saw part. Marcie hung out for most of the second set and sang along to songs like Spit “N Fire Blues and Relax. Joe did a great super deep vocal on 16 tons. The band made it sound like it was from a bygone era but then brought the rock for The Mime. They did a short Binger jam then played a great version of A Quiet Pun. They closed the set with Radiohead’s Creep and Joe and Marcie’s voices were over the top while the band drove it home.

I did not hang out very long and said a couple of quick goodbyes. I survived the trip from the circle back to the safety of the sidewalk and took the long pleasant walk home.

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM Thursday June 22nd will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows:

Song before: You’ve Got Time – Regina Spektor

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Phish became so huge that a lot of people think of Burlington as a host to many jam bands, which we certainly have plenty, but we also have lots of diverse artists and some even think your song is too long.

1.) Your Song’s Too Long – Mr. Ray Fork
2.) Tell Me No – Clever Girls
3.) Fast – Chin Ho
4.) Terrarium – Vedora

I miss Vedora. What a beautiful song. Chin put a ton of music into our community in the 90’s. Nice rocker from the Girls. Ray Fork, you’ve just got to love him. OK, here is the next song on Camera.

5.) Dead End Street – 1881
6.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
7.) Bloodboy – Barbacoa
8.) Off To Be On – Near North

Cool song by the Vermont band. I should really try and catch up with them soon. Classic cover of the Envy song by Barbacoa. Bill Mullins and Kirk Flanagan from the band will play at Foam Brewers tomorrow as the Idles. Classic song from the Cush. Great song from 1881. This next set of music has a universal theme. It begins with not being able to get by, even though you are in the show.

9.) Soul Piggy Bank – SWALE
10.) I Got A Job – Maryse Smith
11.) Paycheck – Slingshot Dakota
12.) I Need A Raise – Cave Bees
13.) Rejected – Black Rabbit
14.) I Quit – Blotto

With the setup from the first song, I think you can see the flow of the theme from the song titles. Great songs, each and every one of them. OK, let’s keep rocking.

15.) Lion Tamer – Carraway
16.) Parking Lot – Villanelles
17.) Silence Kills – Secret Heliotropes
18.) Just Another Day – The Nancy Druids

I had to play that one because of the lion tamer reference. Cool songs from Heliotropes, Villanelles and Carraway. This next song is just great.

19.) Haze – gneiss
20.) Bury Me – Forest Gray
21.) Harvest Moon – Silver Bridget
22.) Easy Come – Split Tongue Crow

Great song from the Rutland band. Bridget are so wonderful. I caught up with Forest Gray at Radio Bean last Sunday and he put on a delightful show as always. Gneiss are at Martell’s in Jefforsonville tomorrow. OK, time to keep rocking.

23.) Spit N Fire Blues – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
24.) Showdown At The Blue Moon Hotel – Jerichovox
25.) Sequoia 3 – Binger

Great rocker by the very thoughtful band that Facebook won’t let me tag. Jerichovox are from Jericho VT and play cool songs. That song by Joe Adler and the band was recorded live at Nectar’s. OK, let’s keep rocking.

26.) Flypaper – Persian Claws
27.) Light’s Of Montreal – Lobot
28.) Strawberry Blonde – Dino Bravo VT
29.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire the Cannons

Cannons only existed for a couple of years but left us with some great songs. Dino will be at The Monkey House on Sunday with some other musicians to raise money for a good cause, so you should Show Up. Lobot were so much fun, and so were the Claws. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Joe Adler and the Rangers of Danger, and Binger at Radio Bean January 27, 2017   Leave a comment

Joe Adler and the Rangers of Danger pic by Tim Lewis

I had a great time seeing music last Friday at Radio Bean. It was one of those shows that would run too late for me to see it all, since I work Saturday mornings, but knew would be so good that I had to catch what I could.

The show began about 10:30 when Joe Adler took the stage with Binger sitting in as the Rangers Of Danger. Joe sang and played the card deck acoustic guitar. Braden Winslow played soaring solos with ease on electric guitar. Shack Ear ran to some beautiful places on bass and Dalton Muzzy effortlessly added the thunder on drums. They were joined by Dan Rome from Gnomedad who tore it up on saxophone. They began with a huge and luscious Brothers And Sisters. They went deep into Joe’s solo catalog for a song with the line Oh My Lord and everything sounded great. A cover of Dead Flowers was fun, as was the story Joe told later about Binger having never heard the song before learning it for the show. They mellowed out for a song from Joe’s Many Things & Many Scenes.album. Relax is such a fun and joyous song. I think it was about there that Rich Haskell and Mary Wolcott arrived. The band lit into a rocking version of The Mime then Joe went over the top with his super deep voice for 16 Tons. They went back to another old Joe song and Stratosphere filled the room with joy. They closed the show with Many Things & Many Scenes and gave it a super rocking over the top Judas Priest ending. What A show.

We hung out for a bit, then the dynamic trio known as Binger hit the stage. They opened with a rocking cover of Shakedown Street then played a fantastic version of Strings. Apparently, I had put that on a mix disc for Mary so she knew and heartily enjoyed their rendition of it. Their unique blend of jam, hip hop and rock is endearing and makes you want to dance. Their lyrics cut to the core of what it means to be a beautiful human being. I loved every note as they rocked through a few songs I did not know. They pulled out a blistering version of Resurrection In Sanskrit I and dropped it immaculately into If I Knew. I made it through 10 songs, including a rocking King Vice before the hour got too late.

It sounds like Joe and Binger may keep playing together, but together or separate, great music flows when they play.
