Song before: Red Rain – Peter Gabriel

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Last week was a bit crazy in the political world but this week has seem a bit more calmness. All around people are being wonderful and building networks of love and planting seeds to help the future blossom. Let’s begin with a song about that.

1.) Seed Of Healing – That Virginia
2.) Young Girl – Clare Byrne: Song and Dance
3.) Mama – Ivamae
4.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith

Great song from Maryse who used to play in town all the time but still stops by to enchant us. Ivamae’s songs are so beautiful. I have to go see her again soon. I wanted to go back to Clare’s ep after playing a song a couple of weeks ago. What a great song. I’ve really got to get to know That Virginia. Thanks Jennifer Grossi for sending me her music. OK, let’s head on over to Robot Dog Studio for another edition of WBKM Live At Robot Dog. Tonight I interview David Rosane & The Zookeepers and they play four cool songs.

5.) Grandma – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
6.) Sugar And Cream – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
7.) Hope In The Dark – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
8.) What The Fuck Went Wrong – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

Thanks so much Jennifer, Don Sinclair, David Rosane for playing and thanks Ryan Cohen for the production and recording and to Mary Wolcott for being part of the scene. OK, let’s play the next song on Loose Tooth which is the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week.

9.) Crazy – Clever Girls
10.) Lovely Day – gneiss
11.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
12.) Finally Found The One – When Particles Collide

Particles are a great rock band and will be at The Monkey House next Wednesday. Milton is a great songwriter and will be at Light Club Lamp Shop next Tuesday. 17.) Good Times – Grand
18.) We Govern The Breeze – Humble Hero
19.) I Choo-Choo-Choose You – Mr. Doubtfire
20.) Another Day Closer To Nothing – Grand

I had to play two Grand songs because they are so short and so great. Great song from Doubt. It was great to get to know Hero and they rocked that song hard Monday night. OK, let’s keep rocking.

23.) One Thousand Lies – Comrade Nixon

I had a great time seeing music Monday night at Nectar’s. The show said doors at 9 and one of the bands said they were on a 9 so I got there close to 9 and found a lovely spot to sit in the window as the last band finished sound checking.

It was about 9:30 when Grand began playing fast punk indie rock. Their songs are super-catchy and have lots of energy. They opened with Look Out Below then played a song about most of the Vermonters that they meet. Everybody Wants To Get You High is such a fun song. They played a song about wanting to keep me alive then slowed down a bit for Don’t Put Me Down, I’m Coming Around. They were at full throttle for Good Times and Another Day Closer To Nothing. They spoke of a friend who had committed suicide and implored everyone to talk to someone if they ever feel that way, then played a song that said I can’t feel anything. They played a song about the one that got away and a song about going out. They played a song about being too old to be able to rock. I liked it. I didn’t understand it but I liked it. All through the set Aaron kept the audience engaged with fun stories and quips but for the last song he walked to the front of the stage and began gently playing guitar. He began to sing without a microphone. The audience came in close and stayed at the front of the stage even after he moved back to the mic and the band built the song about his feelings into an epic. That ended the set and added to the list of great performances that I have been lucky enough to experience when seeing Grand.

Up next was a band that I knew nothing about so I was excited to see what they had. Humble Hero began playing loud and fast and sang a song that went She’s in love with L. Ron Hubbard and there’s no place for me. I was completely hooked. They definitely had a punk sound but there was something else that I could not quite grasp. Maybe it was a prog or metal vibe but either way, they sounded great. Guitarist Dave O’Leary sang most of the songs but bassist Jerry Passalacqua sang a couple as Mike Richard drove the songs hard on drums. They played songs like Playground, Drowning, and Poverty. They played a song about the CIA and one about Prayers. They played one about Hollywood and ended the 10 song set with the mini-epic We Govern The Breeze. I really liked their set and want to see them again soon.

Mr. Doubtfire came on next and regaled us with their super-high energy indie rock sound. They opened with a song about walking away and stopping and staring. They played songs about Choo Choo Choosing us and about apathy. They played a song that went that’s what I call a getaway and rocked out There’s A Problem. It was late but they rocked out a few more and ended close to midnight. I always have fun when they play.

I hung out and chatted for a bit then took the lovely walk home with a song in my heart and my head feeling like I’d been put through a sonic wringer.
