Song before: Kings – The Church Band

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve been listening to the new Phil Yates album a lot and love it. Let’s start tonight with the last song on the album.

1.) Bite Your Tongue – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
2.) Redemption On Pearl – Milton Busker
3.) Done Waiting – The New Siberians
4.) A Cut In The Night Sky – Matt the Gnat and the Gators

I went out to see the Gators last night at Nectar’s. They played a great version of that song and lots of other dark tunes. Another great song from the Siberians album Black, Blue & White album, which I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. Milton played a great version of Pearl at Light Club Lamp Shop on Monday. Great new song from Phil about patriotism. These next two artists will be at ArtsRiot next Wednesday for a live recording for Big Heavy World.

5.) My Heart – Francesca Blanchard
6.) Forsythia – Cricket Blue
7.) Drink Myself Blind – Phil Yates and the Affiliates

Song before Shine – Stoneman Douglas Drama Club

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Please join me on a ride through some deep cuts from Burlington’s past to music that was released this week. Let’s start a decade ago with an amazing song.

1.) Bad Oasis – farm
2.) Cancer – SWALE
3.) On Backstreets – Eastern Mountain Time
4.) Small Town Movie – The Cush

Movie is one of those songs that everyone always loves when they play live. Cool new song from Eastern who are at Zenbarn tonight. Cancer is from Swale’s first EP Verdigris. I want to send that out to everyone who is dealing with cancer, whether it’s you, your family or a loved one. Keep up the fight and make sure you have lots of friends to help. I love that Farm song. OK, here is the next song on Black, Blue & White.

5.) Bird On The Sea – The New Siberians
6.) Judgment Day – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
7.) Honest Will – The Parts
8.) Cemetery Walks – Ryan Ober and The Romans

Great new song from his Caveman Blues album. It was great to chat with Ryan last Monday at the Maryse Smith show. Cool new song from Danny LeFrancois and the band. I’ve played Judgment before but this is the brand new final mix from the upcoming Book Of Zoo album. Such a fantastic song from the Siberians. So, I made it out to the three Monday residency shows that Maryse has done at Light Club Lamp Shop this month. There is another opportunity next Monday. She’s played a lot of cool songs but maybe not this one.

9.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith
10.) Luminous – Michael Chorney and Hollar General
11.) Kids – Wren Kitz
12.) Magic In This Mystery – Robin Gottfried Band

I love thinking about the magic and mystery in and around life. Robin and the band are playing Saturday at On Tap Bar and Grill. Wren will be at Autumn Records on Saturday. I chose Kids to honor all of the kids standing up to their schools and governments and TV personalities to try and stop the gun violence. Have it kids!! Michael joined Maryse last Monday and it was so wonderful to hear their guitars weave together, while Francesca Blanchard weaved her voice with Maryse’s. Next week should be pretty magical too. This next band are playing tonight at Red Square.

13.) Three Feels Right – gneiss
14.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
15.) The Mists – Aram Bedrosian
16.) Crimescene – Dino Bravo VT

That’s a cool newer song from Dino that was recorded at our Robot Dog Studio session last year. Great work as always from Aram. Francesca is playing Sunday at Higher Ground. Great song from Gneiss from a Robot Dog session last year too. This next singer moved away but comes back now and then.

17.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass
18.) Your Downtown Aperture – Video Pigeon
19.) Bob Marley And The Hartford Whalers – The Zambonis
20.) Green Apple Girl – Cranial Perch

Perch played lovely chaotic music in the ’90’s. Zambonis played songs about hockey in the ’90’s. Pigeon had that super cool kind of mysterious sound in the ’90s’. I love the power of Hero. Here’s another band from the ’90’s.

21.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy
22.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
23.) Golgi Apparatus – The Pants
24.) High Water Mark – Belizbeha

Belizbeha played acid jazz in the ’90’s. That’s a cover of a Pants song. That’s the Pants covering Phish. Zola always rocked. Great song from Starlight. Let’s play another song about the power of water.

25.)The Sea Is powerful – Wide Wail
26.) Daydreaming – Thanya Iyer
27.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

Such a powerful song from Anais. Thanya are from Montreal but stopped by the Lamp Shop on Tuesday and played a great show. Wail were so great in the ’90’s. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Bobcaygeon – The Tragically Hip

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin tonight with a couple of songs about lion taming.

1.) Just Another Day – The Nancy Druids
2.) Lion Tamer – Carraway
3.) Black 17 – The New Siberians
4.) Parking Lot – Villanelles

Villanelles keep playing that song for us. Thanks guys. Great song from Siberians. Considering the line from the Druids song, I just had to follow it with the Carraway. OK, here is the next song on By My Side.

5.) I Do – Kat Wright
6.) Crazy – Clever Girls
7.) Trouble Come No More – Cricket Blue
8.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass

Gregory is coming to Higher Ground on Sunday. Thanks for sponsoring our station HG. Cricket will open that show. Great songs from Clever and Kat. Do you ever travel just for the ride?

9.) Ever Travel – The Red Telephone
10.) Drivin’ All Alone – The Parts
11.) Moving Song – Zola Turn
12.) Wally Rides The Ferry – Zoot Wilson

Great song from the ’80’s. Zola Rocked us in the ’90’s. Telephone rocked us in the 00’s and the Parts are rocking us now. So, if you like punk head to Jim’s basement on Saturday for these next two bands.

13.) Blank Daze – Mr. Doubtfire
14.) Blue Lights – Sink or Swim
15.) Blue Light Shines – Gabrielle Douglas and the Dwellers
16.) Something I Drew – farm

It was fun chatting with Brent Hallenbeck last night about our local music scene. I was on Rocket Shop on Big Heavy World last night to announce that all of my show write-ups, past and future, will be part of BHW. Brent was a great host and we both liked Farm and The Cush. We were sad that Farm went away but happy about how they morphed into The Mountain Says No.

17.) Gazerbeam – The Mountain Says No
18.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget
19.) Every Last One Of Us – SWALE
20.) The Heart Is King – Pinhead

Pinhead helped open Burlington up to the wide variety of music that exists today. Great song from Swale. I want to send lots of love to Eric Olsen who just lost his mother. Our hearts go out to you Eric!!! Great take on the Stones song by Bridget and great rocker from Mountain. This next band was the first to really turn me on to our local music scene, so many years ago.

21.) Happy New Year – Ninja Custodian
22.) Decide – Dave Jarvis Band
23.) The Original Original – Black Rabbit
24.) Round Sum – Cave Bees

The Bees come out to rock us now and then, and have been doing so for years. Rabbit always put on fun shows. Dave rocked us back in the ’90’s and has a new band called Agent 802. I love Ninja. OK, let’s stay in the past for a bit.

25.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
26.) Holly Mae – The Snaz
27.) Bridge To Panda Chaos – Zeus Springsteen
28.) Six Inch Knife – Will
29.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow

Great song from the Rutland band. They morphed out of Will who played around in the 00’s. I can’t wait to see Zeus again and hear what they are recording. Super cool song from the Snaz and fun rocker from Decentz. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM can be heard over the air on both sides of the Champlain Valley or streamed from the Facebook page link above. It will run from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows.

Song before: First We Take Manhattan (live) – Leonard Cohen

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I want thank Higher Ground for sponsoring our station. They’ve got a huge show with Kat Wright releasing her new album By My Side tomorrow. I want to begin tonight with the many reports of bullying and swastika painting and acts of intimidation that have been happening since the election. We need to investigate every incident and call people out on their mean language and horrible actions. It’s time to look at ourselves as a country and encourage our good nature and step past the darker elements in our soul. It’s time to acknowledge that we’ve got problems.

1.) You’ve Got Problems – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
2.) Bird On The Sea – The New Siberians
3.) Are We Mad? – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
4.) Children Of The Stars – Madaila

We are going to have to remember that we are all in this together and do our part to add positive actions to our community. After all, we all live under the same stars. David Rosane has written some great post election analysis of what’s going on and what can be. He also writes great songs. The Siberians sing about love saving us and we will need to keep that in mind. Great new song from Kat and the band. The story of how that came together is pretty great. OK, here comes the last song from Song For My Double. I’ll be off next week for Thanksgiving and in December I will start a new album to play all the way through, song after song, week after week, until it is done.

5.) No One – Invisible Homes
6.) Shy Spiders – Villanelles
7.) 2000 – The Pants
8.) Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye (live) – Leonard Cohen

A lot of local musicians have been saddened by the death of Leonard. He will be sorely missed but the staggering body of work that he left us can come alive every time someone plays one of his songs or reads one of his poems. There was a beautiful gathering of local artists on Monday at Light Club Lamp Shop and that can happen whenever we want to make it happen again. Kirk Flanagan did a great version of Hey at that show, and he also played one Leon Russel song. Pants were a classic band from Burlington’s ’90’s. Spiders is a modern classic. Great song, and album, from Homes. Here’s another Burlington classic.

9.) You Don’t Like Me, Do Ya – Pinhead
10.) Wally Rides The Ferry – Zoot Wilson
11.) Destiny Waits – Bud & Budd ~ The Kind Buds
12.) New Atlantis – Aaron Flinn

Great song by Aaron. He played a couple of Cohen songs on Monday. Bud Johnson and Budd are so kind and great performers. Zoot used to rock out town in the ’80’s and Pinhead played back then too. Those songs have been around for a while but this next one is brand new.

13.) Waiting – Mr. Doubtfire
14.) The Interrogator (Enhanced) – Milton Busker
15.) Lean In – When Particles Collide
16.) Blue Light Shine – Gabrielle Douglas and the Dwellers

We will all have to shine our loving lights a lot in the next four years. Particles are out and about fighting sexism and rocking our world. Hopefully, Milton’s song will not be as on the mark as it seems like it might be. Great new song from Doubtfire. This next band are at The Monkey House tomorrow. Let’s take a walk around town with Diane Sullivan and Becky.

17.) Yayo – Dirty Blondes
18.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz
19.) Diamond Days – The Lavas
20.) Undecided – Rocketsled

Rocketsled will get the band back together next January. I loved that one Lavas album. The Decentz played back in the early ’80’s. OK, let’s keep rocking.

21.) Comm To Space – ROUGH FRANCIS
22.) Can’t Feel It – Vetica
23.) That’s When I Reach For My Revolver – Ninja Custodian
24.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates

Phil was at the Cohen show too. I love that song by him and the band. Ninja played in the late ’80’s and early ’90’s and always rocked the house with that one. I love that Vetica song. Such a classic from Francis. Here’s another classic from the ’90’s.

25.) Poem For Torin (Ethan’s Stoned) – Peg Tassey MUSIC
26.) Great Escape – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
27.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass

Great song from Gregory. Jeremy Gilchrist played at the Cohen show and Peg Tassey was there too, but just to listen. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. I’m off next week but will be back to do it again soon.

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM will be broadcast from 9-11pm US Eastern Time and can be listed to from the Facebook page link above. It will go as follows:

Song before: In The Blue Light – jane siberry
intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. I want to thank Higher Ground for filling our town with music, sponsoring our station and for helping this first artist release his new album tonight.

1.) Every Evening After – Gregory Douglass
2.) Stumble – Andriana Chobot
3.) The Alchemist – Pours
4.) Give Me All Your Love – Madaila

Madaila are a fun band and that is such a fun song. I love that Pours song and like to pull it out now and then. Another great song from Andriana Chobot. OK, let’s play the next song on Giant Places.

5.) Water Rose – Lendway
6.) The Interrogator (Enhanced) – Milton Busker
7.) Sometime Next Week – 1881
8.) Beaten Down – SWALE

Nice Beatles sound on most of those songs. 1881 were great last night at Nectar’s. I’m loving Milton’s new album. Hmmm, Lendway. This next set is inspired by a man who was beaten, but is nowhere near down.

9.) This Land Is Your Land – VT Artists
10.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 VT artists
11.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday

Such loving tributes to the man, and such great words by the man himself. OK, let’s play some rock and roll. I’m so psyched for the ENVY Reunion Show! tonight at The Monkey House that I found a way to be in two places at once. Here are a couple of Envy songs and a couple of related songs.

12.) Imaginary – Envy
13.) 1,000 Lies – Sean Toohey
14.) Today Is Tomorrow – The Red Telephone
15.) Sunday – Envy

That’s a classic from their Distorted Greetings album, as was the first song. Sean and Matt Hutton got together last year for the Places We Return RT album and that is one of the cooler songs from it. Great solo song from Sean. On bass with Envy will be Julia Austin so here is a song from her old band.

16.) Chop Wood Carry Water – Zola Turn
17.) All My Life – Wide Wail
18.) Finder – Madelines
19.) Circumstance – Tokyo Storm Warning

Those were all songs from the revered mythical 1990’s Burlington music scene. There is a myth that says the scene ebbs and flows but if you look deep enough there are always amazing bands out there. This is one of the great bands who played during one of the alleged ebbs.

20.) Trading Bullets – Fire The Cannons
21.) Dementalist – Villanelles
22.) Symptom Of The Universe – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
23.) Tornado Head – Barbacoa

Barbacoa are opening for Envy tonight. I love the surf versions of the Sabbath songs that the Breaks do. Villanelles were great for all four Wednesdays in July at Nectar’s. OK, lets ease up a bit as we head towards the close. This band played 20 songs in an hour last Saturday at Nectar’s.

24.) BS Passes – Black Rabbit
25.) Angela Carter – Cricket Blue
26.) One For One – Andriana Chobot
27.) The Great Wide – Gregory Douglass

I thought I’d end where I began, with great songs from Gregory and Andriana. Cricket will play on Saturday at The Skinny Pancake and they are a great duo. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a hot and beautiful night in the city and there is music all around. I saw The Wee Folkestra at Summervale in the Intervale in the old north end of town and on Church Street they had an area blocked off where people were dancing to recorded music. Let’s begin tonight with one of my favorite local singer songwriters.

1.) Clocks On The Wall – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
2.) Can You Love Me Too? Bethany Conner Music
3.) New Love – Andriana Chobot
4.) In Waves – Sarah Blacker

Sarah comes to town on a pretty regular basis and always puts on a great show. I’m just loving the Andriana album! I was lucky enough to hang out with James Lockridge and the Big Heavy World crew last night as they broadcast their radio show outside on King st. I was fortunate enough to hear Bethany play a few songs, and I wanted to get her music on the air immediately. I just love that song from Jeremy. On Tuesday when I woke up and checked in with Facebook there were a lot of posts about the RNC. I expected the same yesterday but instead saw several post of people speaking of a local artist who just took their own life. All of the posts said talk to me if you feel that way. Please add me to that list. I’ve been through a lot and know the value of each and every one of you. We all need you more than you may know. If you feel that far down, please reach out. There are lots of great people who will do anything they can to help. In that spirit, let’s move on to the next song on Lendway’s Giant Places.

5.) You’re Safe With Us – Lendway
6.) Phones – Violet Ultraviolet
7.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
8.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass

Great song from Gregory. He used to play in town all the time and has moved on, but still stops in now and then. Great song from Milton’s new album. That is a song from UV’s new album Pop City and wow. Hmmm, Lendway. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring us at the radio station and for providing the Girls Rock VT July Showcase on Saturday at 12:30pm. GRV is a great organization and it is a great way to help girls learn about the music business. One of their main proponents is this next artist.

9.) One From Two – Linda Bassick
10.) This Is Our Good Night – Aya Inoue
11.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
12.) All I Want Is A Hoverboard.- Wave of the Future

Samara Lark Brown sings with Wave and is a great supporter of Girls Rock Vermont and would be willing to help if you feel really down. She and Joe and Aya and several others played with Wee Folkestra tonight and it was great to hear them. I love the musical saw on Brothers courtesy of the magical Johnnie Day Durand and she played with Wee Folk too. OK, let’s rock. Next week one of the great local bands from the ’90’s will reunite for a show at The Monkey House. Here is a set of their music.

13.) Bloodboy – Envy
14.) Still Life Scene – Envy
15.) Bionic – The Red Telephone
16.) Talking With Tony – Envy
17.) Bomb – Envy.

I’m so psyched for the ENVY Reunion Show! next week! Speaking of the Monkey House, I saw these three bands last Saturday.

18.) Steve Buscemi Fan Club – YURT
19.) Sleepwalker – 1881
20.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates

Phil Yates & The Affiliates played an awesome show and even added the extra two sixes to that song. I guess we now know where 1881 got their name. Wow, that’s a lot of sheep to count before sleeping. Yurt are from Bozeman Montana and stopped in to play a delightful show. Thanks guys! Last night I saw the third of the four Wednesday night residencies that Villanelles played at Nectar’s. They keep playing this song and I keep loving it.

21.) Shy Spiders – Villanelles
22.) Sugar Coated Candy Stix – Dino Bravo VT
23.) Iron And Metal – The Mountain Says No
24.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit

Rabbit are playing Saturday for the Fight Fire with Fire • A fundraiser for Henry St. Deli ft. Tar Iguana, Doctor Rick and Black Rabbit • Nectar’s to help out with all of the damage done by the fire.
Mountain opened the show last night but did not play that song. They played 9 new songs that have not been recorded and released yet. I think they recorded a bulk of the new album with Ryan Cohen recently but have a way to go to finish it. Dino really need to get some good recordings of their songs. They have lots of really good ones, like Candy Stix. Hmmm, Villanelles. OK, we’ve got time for a couple more.

25.) Help Wanted – Wide Wail
26.) The Naked Garden – Peg Tassey MUSIC
27.) Womb With A View – Heavy Plains

It was good to catch up with Luke Awtry last night. Apparently Plains lost their rhythm section but just picked up another. Hopefully they will play shows soon. That is such a powerful song from Peg and a classic from WW. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? See Ya.

28.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

Tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM from 9-11pm US Eastern time will go as follows:

Song before: Russian Autumn Heart – The Church Band

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Jazzfest kicks off tomorrow in Burlington, so I’ve got a bit of jazz lined up, but the main part of the show will be to go deeper into the albums of a few bands I’ve been playing recently. It seems like I have played one song by a bunch of bands and said that I would have to check them out more. We will do that tonight. However, considering the date, I have to begin with a different song. Today is the second of June, so let’s begin with this:

1.) Last Day Of May – The Red Telephone
2.) Farside – Villanelles
3.) Sometime Next Year – 1881
4.) The Blackout – The Static Age

I love that song by Static and just have to pull it out and play now and then. Another cool song from 1881. I may have to check them out live sometime soon. Great song from Villanelles new album Blue Heart Attack, which had a great write up in Seven Days this week. Great song from Telephone. OK, here is the next song on Callisto.

5.) Flicker Flutter – Alpenglow
6.) Break – Slingshot Dakota
7.) Empty Frequency – Rue M. (Rue Mevlana)
8.) Last Love – Myra Flynn Music

Myra will kick off Jazzfest at The Skinny Pancake on Friday. I just love the energy that Rue put into a song and a show. Another gorgeous song from Slingshot. If you hadn’t noticed, I played their entire Break album song for song for the last 9 weeks. Break is the last song on the album. Flicker is the second to last song on Callisto. I will play the last one next week, then start another album the week after that. OK, it’s Jazzfest. Let’s play some jazz.

9.) NoRoomForSquares – Sneakers Jazz Band
10.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass
11.) Now That You Are Gone – Francesca Blanchard

Another great song from Francesca’s deux visions album. Great song from Gregory. So many great jazz players used to play at Sneakers. This next song is a great song that I do not play often enough.

12.) What’s In California? – Joshua Glass Music
13.) Who’s Fault Was That? – The Snaz
14.) Barstool Blues – Seth Yacovone Band

Great song from David and the band. Killer cover of the Neil Young song from Seth. The Snaz just rock. I love the Josh song. OK, Let’s play a song from Vetica from an album they put out after breaking up. This is a song from the Songs In The Key Of V album.

16.) Distance – Vetica
17.) Green Apple Girl – Dave Jarvis
18.) Blue Lights – Sink or Swim

Great rocker from Phantom. I have to get out and catch them soon. Same for Sink. I love that Dave song from the ’90’s. I miss Vetica. OK, let’s let the music get a little scary for a while.

20.) Devil Knows My Name – Great Western
21.) Raising The Dead – Carraway
22.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates
