Song before: The Sound Of A – Alice Cooper

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Let’s begin with a local classic.

1.) North Hyde Park – Hover
2.) Crazy – Clever Girls
3.) What’s To Become Of The Meaning Of Love – Daniel Romano
4.) Beach Day – Looms
5.) Automatic Sweetheart – Hammydown

Last Saturday I got to see Clever Girls play at The Monkey House with Looms and Hammydown and last night I saw Clever Girls with Daniel Romano at ArtsRiot. Tomorrow Clever Girls are playing at the Tarrant Art Gallery as part of Exhibitionists: Clever Girls at 5pm. OK, let’s play the last song on the Action EP.

6.) Everyday Weekend – 1881
7.) Kick Rocks – And The Kids
8.) Another Day Closer To Nothing – Grand
9.) Epic – Laureate

Laurieate will come visit us on Sunday for a show at the Monkey House. I haven’t seen Grand for a while and hope to catch up with them soon. They are such a fun band. The Kids are at Higher Ground tonight and always put on a great show. Great song from 1881. I hope you enjoyed listening to all of the songs on their Light’s, Camera, and Action EP’s. I’ll start a new album to play song after song week after week, nest week. These next two bands will be at the Monkey House on Sunday too.

10.) From Here – The Red Summer Sun
11.) Ex-Files – Better Things
12.) Surf Showdown – The High Breaks
13.) The Territory – Hana Zara

Hana has a new album together called Where Amanda Is King. She just launched a Kickstarter to raise money to get it mastered and printed. She writes such great songs and I’m sure the new album will be terrific. The Breaks played at the Summervale festival in the Intervale earlier today. Great songs from Better and Summer. Here is a cool song that I have not heard in a while.

14.) Think I’ll Stay – Great Western
15.) Breathing In – The Hero Cycle
16.) Somewhere Far – The Red Telephone
17.) The Drone – The Cush

The Cush have played many stunning versions of that song in our town over several years. Great song from Telephone who evolved out of Envy. Hero appeared for a year or so and went away but left us with some great music. I have not seen Western in ages but they put on some great shows in the 2010’s. OK, let’s keep rocking.

18.) Weapons Factory – The Wards
19.) Gas And Oil – Gas And Oil
20.) Alcohol Injection – Lord Silky
21.) The Path – Savage Hen

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the Hen. I may have to go check them out in a couple of weeks. Silky just put out a new album and play stunning rock shows. Gas was Beano Parker’s side project and the Wards were his main band. OK, let’s keep rocking.

22.) An Obscene Amount Of Debt – Sink or Swim
23.) The Wolves Are Coming – Suburban Samurai
24.) We Need Bigger Knives – As We Were
25.) Welcome To The Hellmouth – Doom Service

Doom have been playing some shows but I have not caught up with them in a while. I’ll have to change that sometime. As used to play some great punk for us but I have not seen them around lately. Samurai were in town a couple of weeks ago. Swim just played out west. OK, let’s keep rocking.

26.) Carnage – Black Rabbit
27.) Jackbooted Thugs (Have All The Best Drugs) – Anders Parker
28.) Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT

Great song form David and the band who are playing all over Vermont right now, and are recording a new album. Great new classic from Dino. Anders will be in Montpelier on Friday and at ArtsRiot on Saturday. Rabbit always rock. Oh, and I had to play Freeway to set up the next two songs. Tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM will go as follows.

Song before: Where Is My Mind? – The Pixies

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Thanks Higher Ground for sponsoring our station. They have a lot of music happening this week, and so does the rest of our town. Let’s begin with a guy who played around in the 1990’s and is getting the band back together.

1.) Sunflower Street – Dave Jarvis Band
2.) What’s The Deal With The Triangle? – James Kochalka Superstar
3.) Chuck Berry – Dino Bravo VT
4.) The Next Instead – SWALE

On Monday Kochalka, Dino, Swale and Led Loco played a show in honor of Mike McGonegal. It was a great send off and most of those songs were played. He will be missed. OK, here is the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through week after week. The album is called Song For My Double.

5.) Aspiration – Invisible Homes
6.) The Storm Has Been Weathered – 1881
7.) Children Of The Stars – Madaila
8.) Johnny – Arc Iris

Iris will be at Signal Kitchen on Friday and always put on a great show. That’s another new song from Madaila from their Traces album. 1881 are playing Sidebar on Monday and are really good. This next band are playing with Iris on Saturday.

9.) See Me On My Way – Superhuman Happiness
10.) Better Off – Haley Jane and the Primates
11.) Clocks On The Wall – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
12.) It’ll Be OK – Let’s Whisper

Great new song from Whisper. Who needs contests when you can just walk out to a local club and see people like Jeremy. Haley and the band will be at Nectar’s tomorrow and always put on an enthralling show. This next singer will be at Manhattan Pizza on Saturday.

13.) Dreams Elope – Joe Adler
14.) East Jabip – REDadmiral
15.) Muskrat Love – Cave Bees
16.) Two Weeks (’til The End Of The World) – Grand

I still remember the show Grand played at Nectar’s a few months ago and can’t wait to see them again. Bees are playing next Wednesday at ArtsRiot. Admiral are at the Monkey House on Saturday and always rock. OK, let’s play some classic Burlington songs.

17.) Gas And Oil – Gas And Oil
18.) Weapons Factory – The Wards
19.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian
20.) The Spy Song – Pinhead.

All four of those are classic Burlington songs. This next one is too and is unfortunately still all too appropriate.

21.) Boys Club – Peg Tassey MUSIC
22.) Kill Your Idols – Slush
23.) Blood Boy – Barbacoa
24.) Sunday – Envy

Those are all classics too. Barbacoa will play with Swale tomorrow at ArtsRiot for a live recording, so that is one of the many can’t miss shows tomorrow, and Saturday is just as packed. OK, let’s keep rocking.

25.) Knight Ov Swords – The Contrarian
26.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons
27.) Lead Me To Your Love – The New Siberians

Great new Siberians song. FTC rocked the early 2000’s and Casey used to sing in a few local bands. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Last night’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM went as follows:

Song before: Train In Vain – The Clash

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve been on vacation for the last couple of weeks and have seen a ton of great music, and will likely see a ton more before it’s over. Let’s begin tonight with a band I’ve been meaning to catch up with for a while now. I finally saw them last Saturday at Red Square and really enjoyed their show.

1.) Piano In Every Room – gneiss
2.) All Too Human – Close Encounters
3.) Resurrection in Sanskrit 1 – Binger
4.) Resurrection in Sanskrit 2 – Binger

After catching the first set from Gneiss I went down to The Skinny Pancake and caught sets by Close and Binger. I really enjoyed both bands. OK, let’s play the next song on Giant Places.

5.) We should Go Tonight – Lendway
6.) A Quiet Pun – Joe Adler
7.) Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
8.) Angela Carter – Cricket Blue

Cricket are playing at noon in City Hall Park and I may have to go see them. Jeremy has been writing new songs so hopefully we will have a new album from him in the near future. I saw Joe play with The Wee Folkestra last Friday and they are playing at Nectar’s tomorrow. Hmmm, Lendway. On Saturday Tony Gallucci and I will represent WBKM at the Eat More Kale Festival and here is a tiny sampling of the music that will happen that day.

9.) Scattered Birds – Aaron Flinn
10.) If I Knew – Binger
11.) Smile – Dwight & Nicole
12.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band

I’m very psyched for Saturday. Last Monday I went to Nectar’s and caught these three bands.

13.) The Hots – Near North
14.) Drunk On Wall Street – Meadowhawks
15.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates

All three bands were great on Monday. This next band release their new album at Nectar’s on Tuesday.

16.) What If… – REDadmiral
17.) Chuck Berry – Dino Bravo VT
18.) We’re Closed – Blue Button
19.) Gas and Oil – Gas and Oil

What a classic Burlington rocker. BB are playing at The Monkey House on Friday. Dino are at the Monkey on Monday to help raise money for their friend Jay McDonald. I’m sending this next song out to anyone who’s had a tough time lately.

20.) Rejected – Black Rabbit
21.) Betty Rage – Doll Fight
22.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service
23.) Complex Vermont – Self Portrait
24.) Your Eyes – Forest Gray

Last Friday I went to a bar called Foundation and saw a great set by Forest, Portrait and Doom. Andrew Stearns was there too but I slacked and did not track down any of his music. If you need to rock out Doll Fight can always help. I miss this next artist.

25.) Happy Birthday Harry – Hana Zara
26.) The Feeling Is Strange – Binger.

Binger also played Thursday night so since they have played a show in town three times in one week, I had to play them three times. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit
outro

Songs after: Margaret – Marillion with Fish
Hinterland – TILT
Sealine – The Church Band

Last night’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM.ORG was prerecorded so there were no Prince mentions. I’m feeling gutted today about his passing, but am happy that I get to highlight some of the great music that happens in our town. Last night’s show went as follows:

Song before: When You Were Mine – The Church

Intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last week I played a couple of sets to highlight the Wednesday holiday but totally forgot to play a song from these guys.

1.) Destiny Waits – The Kind Buds
2.) One Of A Kind – DuPont Brothers
3.) Save A Different Way – Francesca Blanchard
4.) Let’s Move – Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul band

Thanks to John Billingsley for getting me a copy of Live At The Fort volume 2, so I can play some live versions of great local songs. Those last three songs were from that album. The Buds song was a live version from one of their albums. OK, let’s play the next song on Callisto. This is a redone, and more rocking, version of one of their older songs:

5.) Solitude – Alpenglow
6.) Rocket – Soule Monde
7.) Don’t Let The Darkness In – Anders Parker Cloud Badge
8.) Give Me All Your Love – Madaila

Those last three were live from the fort. I’m so psyched to have a Cloud Badge to play. Last Friday I went to the 1/2 Lounge to check out the Matthew Bryan Hagen solo set. I was cool to chat with him and Jer Coons. His new songs are cool and dark and he even tossed in a Lendway song. Here are a couple of songs from Matt’s other bands.

9.) Sea Chopper – The High Breaks
10.) Better Done Now – Lendway
11.) Smooth The Grain – Waylon Speed
12.) You Are Not The Photograph – Swale

Those last two were live from the Fort. That’s a classic Lendway song and something about the feel of it reminds me of Matt’s new songs. Same goes for Sea Chopper. OK, here is a brand new super cool song from Binger.

13.) Strings – Binger
14.) The Storm Has Been Weathered – 1881
15.) Lewlyweds – Slingshot Dakota
16.) Hold Me Tight – The Decentz

That one was recorded a long time ago, but still makes me bop around the room. Great new song from Slingshot. Is it May 10th yet? Ryan Cohen just posted some new songs from a band he produced called 1881. I don’t know much about them but liked that song. Hmmm, Binger. OK, let’s go back to the fort one more time and play some rock and roll.

17.) Righteous – Rough Francis
18.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian
19.) Gas And Oil – Gas And Oil
20.) Kill Your Idols – Slush

That was a classic rocker from Burlington’s 1990’s. Gas were Beano’s, from the Wards, solo band. I love that song. Killer song from Ninja. Great live version of the Francis song. OK, this next band played Metal Monday last week.

21.) Pastoral – Vultures Of Cult

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Outro

Song after: Lucky (live Badgers) – Fish

As always, I want to thank everyone who made last night’s show possible. Thanks to: John Billingsley, The Church Band, Bud & Budd ~ The Kind Buds, Bud Johnson, Kitty Kindbud, Francesca Blanchard, Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band, Kat Wright, Bob Wagner, Alpenglow, Creston Lea, Steve Hadeka, Madaila, Jer Coons, The High Breaks, Matthew Bryan Hagen, Todd Gevry, Kevin Lynam, Lendway, Michael Clifford, Waylon Speed!, Kelly Ravin, SWALE, Eric Olsen, Amanda Gustafson, Tyler Bolles, Jeremy Frederick, Binger, Shakir Stephen, Dalton Muzzy, Braden Winslow, Ryan Cohen, Slingshot Dakota, Carly Comando, Tom Patterson, ROUGH FRANCIS, Bobby Hackney Jr., Urian Hackney, Julian Hackney, Paul Comegno, Ninja Custodian, Brendan Devitt, Doug McAllister, Ted Pappadopoulos, Vultures of Cult, Fish, and everyone else!!!

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. One of the legendary Burlington musicians from the ’90’s released a new ep this week. She is celebrating with a release party tonight in California. This is the title song.

1.) Cowboy Summer – Alice Austin
2.) Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist
3.) Snow In The Controls – Dom The Barber
4.) All The Same To You – Milton Busker

Great song from Milton. I’ve been waiting until it was snowy out to play the Dommer Barber song. It isn’t really snowy out, but is in late January. I have played the Jeremy song before but that was a demo and this is the brand new studio version. Great stuff from Alice, as always. This next band played a fantastic version of this song last week at Signal Kitchen.

5.) Golden Crutch – Swale
6.) Son, You Are No Island – Torres
7.) Year Of The Snake – Tyler Daniel Bean
8.) Jack Sharp – Swale

Swale played a rocking version of that one too. Tyler played that song solo acoustic, but it had a lot of fire, and the version I just played is the full band version. Pretty cool song. Island was the song that stood out the most at the Torres show, though I really liked it all. I love the slow build and heavy surge at the end. I though it would be fun to bookend that set with Swale. OK, here is the next song on Red Flannel Hash

9.) Alienation – Black Rabbit
10.) Throw Me Away – Spill
11.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons
12.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian

Classic rocker from Ninja. FTC rocked us for a few years in the early 2000’s and put on some pretty intense shows. Spill are another great ’90’s band and that song always grabbed me. I just love that Rabbit song!! There is a cool show happening tomorrow at Twofourtwo Main with these next three bands.

13.) Last Song – Carraway
14.) No Way – Phantom Suns
15.) Nothing Important – Doom Service

Doom have a new album called Live At Mount Doom, so I got that one from that album. Great songs from Phantom and Carraway. I really have to make it to 242 Main tomorrow. OK, let’s keep rocking.

16.) Ladders – Heavy Plains
17.) Great Scott – Wave Of The Future
18.) Too Drunk – The Dirty Blondes
19.) Hello World – Screaming Skull
20.) On A Sunday – Screaming Broccoli

Killer song from the late ’80’s early ’90’s band. That Skull song is so cool. It’s a short intro followed by a shorter burst of intense rock. I just heard that the Blondes are playing at the Bowie tribute thing at Higher Ground tonight and I’m bummed I missed them. That is such a fun song from Wave. Great rocker from Plains. OK, let’s keep rocking.

21.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
22.) Not True – Peg Tassey
23.) Blue Light Shines – Gabrielle Douglas and The Dwellers
24.) Plastic Revolution

I keep singing that song “Revolution, Bern style now.” Great rocker from Gabby. Great rocker from Peg. Earthquakes had me bouncing around the studio, but of course, the other songs had me doing that too. OK, let’s keep rocking.

25.) Something I Drew – Farm
26.) Gas And Oil – Gas And Oil
27.) Weapons Factory – The Wards with the Dirty Blondes
28.) Purpose and Object – The Contrarian

I love that song from Casey Merlin Rae. Classic from the ’80’s punk band. That was a re-recorded version with a bit of help from Diane Sullivan on vocals. Great song from Beano’s solo band. Hmmm, Farm. I liked the Torres show so much, I want to toss in another song. This is the title song from the new album.

29.) Sprinter – Torres
30.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. I had great plans to see lots of music this week, but twisted my ankle on Friday and sat (with leg up and icepack on) out too much of it. It’s a bit better now so I should be all set soon. Today has been cloudy and cool and humid and I’ve been in a spacey sort of mood. Let’s take a trip through the last 30 years in town and start with Move Through Time by Persian Claws on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws
2.) Pauses – Black Rabbit
3.) Your Downtown Aperture – Video Pigeon
4.) All My Life – Wide Wail

Killer song from a classic band from Burlington’s glorious ’90’s. Some people say Burlington bands come in waves and there are times when there is not much around. Even in those troughs bands like Video Pigeon were around rocking beautifully. Killer new song from Rabbit. Great song from the Claws!! OK, let’s stay in the ’90’s for a bit.

5.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy
6.) Last Man Standing – Band X
7.) Jules Rosen and Joe Steel – Brave The Vertigo
8.) One More Grave – The Contrarian

Casey Merlin Rae used to play in bands in town, then wrote the music column for Seven Days and is now working in DC to help find ways for musicians to get paid for their music. Yea!! I really wanted to check out Vertigo at Radio Bean last night, but the ankle said no. Killer song from Band X who sort of evolved into Elephants of Scotland. OK, let’s go on to the next song on JV, the album I’m playing all the way through week after week, song after song.

9.) Who could Say – The Mountain Says No
10.) Mad Captain – Brother Zag
11.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara
12.) Abilene – The Lonestar Chain

I’ve been watching the flooding in Texas and saw a mention on the Weather Chanel of Abilene and thought of Burette Douglas and this song. Killer song from Hana. Zag is one of the known unknown cool artists in town. Mountain will be at Radio Bean on Saturday and I really want to make it to the show. I was thinking of checking out this next band when they played Summervale today, but walking down the hill away from the radio station was not going to happen today, short of an act from God.

13.) Dear God – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
14.) Dancing In Dreamtime – Jerichovox
15.) Holiday – Guppyboy
16.) Old Man – Will

Killer song from the Rutland band from the early 2000’s. When they broke up they became Thompson Gunner and Split Tongue Crow. Killer song from the classic ’90’s band. Jericho are playing around a bit and were really cool when I saw them a couple of months back. OK, let’s go back to the early ’80’s, or maybe ’70’s.

17.) At The Diner – Zoot Wilson
18.) 2012 – Lobot
19.) Waterlanding – Swale
20.) Ladders – Heavy Plains

Nice song from the super new band who will be at Nectar’s tomorrow. Swale and one other band will be there too. A few weeks back Chris Farnsworth gave me a collection of songs that Lobot had left over. That one was pretty cool. Hmmm, Zoot. This next band is the other one playing Nectar’s tomorrow.

21.) Ruffians – ROUGH FRANCIS
22.) Gas And Oil – Gas And Oil
23.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight
24.) Stop – REDadmirial

Admiral were at The Old North Ender last night. I had hopes of checking out some of them then heading to the Bean for Vertigo, but it was the couch and ice for me. I’ve got to go see them! Killer song from the 2000’s punk band. Gas was Beano Parker, from the Wards, side project and really rocked! OK, in classic Burlington style, this next band will be at the Bean at the same time as the Nectar’s show tomorrow. Rats!! I love this band.

25.) It’s Happening – Anachronist
26.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I used the excuse of my birthday being last Tuesday to play a few of the songs I’m most passionate about,

Song before: Sparks – The Color Exchange

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It cooled off a little this week and we had a nice thunder and lightning storm, but today was a beautiful sunny day. There are lots of people about and a joyous spirit in the air. I drove to New Hampshire and back yesterday and the mountains of Vermont are lush with tons of shades of green. Enjoy this moment and enjoy your loved ones whenever you can. It was my birthday this week and I’m going to pull out a few of the bands and songs I’m most passionate about. If your band is not on this list it’s more that I only have two hours, not that I meant to miss you. This song has been rocking my world lately. This is Little French Earthquakes by Phil Yates and the Affiliates on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind of Music.

1.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
2.) Teenage Mother Earth – The Red Telephone
3.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
4.) Tibbar Tibbar – Black Rabbit

I knew I had to play a Rabbit song and that was the first one that really caught me, and still does. Love that classic from ZT. It must have been a beautiful time, it must have been a terrible time, it must have been a beautiful terrible time indeed. That one has been speaking to me lately. Let’s continue through Swale’s album The Next Instead.

5.) Golden Crutch – Swale
6.) It Shows – Sarah Blacker
7.) Presence – Satori Bob
8.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara

I love the way Hana’s lyrics walk you through a picture. Great song from John Baumann and Robert Gagnon. That’s another song from Sarah’s new album In Waves. It’s not quite out but can be pre-ordered. This next artist is in California, but put a ton of music into this town over several years.

9.) Never Cry Halo – Alice Austin
10.) Chuck Berry – Dino Bravo VT
11.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian
12.) Trading Bullets – Fire The Cannons

They put on some very intense rock shows in the 2000’s. Classic from Ninja. Dino just played a show in Stowe where they were billed as Dino Barvo, possibly and puppet show. This next band have a new album and a new video for this song.

13.) Playtime – Death World Wide
14.) Mine All Mine – Cave Bees
15.) Gas and Oil – Gas and Oil
16.) This Machine – Invisible Homes

I love the nod to Woody Guthrie and the idea of killing fascist ideas with words and music and ideas and inspiration instead of with bullets. Killer song from Beano Parker’s non Wards band. There’s everything to love about the Cave Bees. Speaking of ideas that could kill fascists and Woody.

17.) This Land Is Your Land – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont musicians
18.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
19.) U Can Love If U Want To – Peg Tassey MUSIC
20.) I Put A Spell On You – Marco Benevento and Kat Wright

That was recorded live at Radio Bean. It doesn’t get more Burlington than that. Killer song from Peg. Brothers and Sisters is dedicated to my brother Ken and all of the musicians that I feel are my brothers and sisters. You know who you are. Thanks for the beautiful song Joe! Bernie is the kind of guy who has spent his whole life trying to kill fascists with wonderful ideas. OK, on Tuesday I turned 50. That means I was born in….

21.) 1965 – The New Siberians
22.) Statistik – The Mountain Says No
23.) TFAY – Elephants of Scotland
24.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight

Love that song from DF. Revolution Doll style now! I just love that Elephants song so much! I finally got the Mountain songs into a playable format. I love the build in that song. Yea, Siberians. This is a great song from a friend of the show.

25.) Letter From The 21st – Jeremy Gilchrist
25.) I Forgot – Maryse Smith
26.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

I just love that song. I’ve loved the Maryse Smith song since I first heard it. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
