Last night’s local music radio show on WBKM 107.1FM went as follows:

Song before: Train In Vain – The Clash

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve been on vacation for the last couple of weeks and have seen a ton of great music, and will likely see a ton more before it’s over. Let’s begin tonight with a band I’ve been meaning to catch up with for a while now. I finally saw them last Saturday at Red Square and really enjoyed their show.

1.) Piano In Every Room – gneiss
2.) All Too Human – Close Encounters
3.) Resurrection in Sanskrit 1 – Binger
4.) Resurrection in Sanskrit 2 – Binger

After catching the first set from Gneiss I went down to The Skinny Pancake and caught sets by Close and Binger. I really enjoyed both bands. OK, let’s play the next song on Giant Places.

5.) We should Go Tonight – Lendway
6.) A Quiet Pun – Joe Adler
7.) Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter
8.) Angela Carter – Cricket Blue

Cricket are playing at noon in City Hall Park and I may have to go see them. Jeremy has been writing new songs so hopefully we will have a new album from him in the near future. I saw Joe play with The Wee Folkestra last Friday and they are playing at Nectar’s tomorrow. Hmmm, Lendway. On Saturday Tony Gallucci and I will represent WBKM at the Eat More Kale Festival and here is a tiny sampling of the music that will happen that day.

9.) Scattered Birds – Aaron Flinn
10.) If I Knew – Binger
11.) Smile – Dwight & Nicole
12.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band

I’m very psyched for Saturday. Last Monday I went to Nectar’s and caught these three bands.

13.) The Hots – Near North
14.) Drunk On Wall Street – Meadowhawks
15.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates

All three bands were great on Monday. This next band release their new album at Nectar’s on Tuesday.

16.) What If… – REDadmiral
17.) Chuck Berry – Dino Bravo VT
18.) We’re Closed – Blue Button
19.) Gas and Oil – Gas and Oil

What a classic Burlington rocker. BB are playing at The Monkey House on Friday. Dino are at the Monkey on Monday to help raise money for their friend Jay McDonald. I’m sending this next song out to anyone who’s had a tough time lately.

20.) Rejected – Black Rabbit
21.) Betty Rage – Doll Fight
22.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service
23.) Complex Vermont – Self Portrait
24.) Your Eyes – Forest Gray

Last Friday I went to a bar called Foundation and saw a great set by Forest, Portrait and Doom. Andrew Stearns was there too but I slacked and did not track down any of his music. If you need to rock out Doll Fight can always help. I miss this next artist.

25.) Happy Birthday Harry – Hana Zara
26.) The Feeling Is Strange – Binger.

Binger also played Thursday night so since they have played a show in town three times in one week, I had to play them three times. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

27.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit
outro

Songs after: Margaret – Marillion with Fish
Hinterland – TILT
Sealine – The Church Band

New Americana – Halsey
Vitamin Dee – Persian Claws

Song Before: Escape Is At Hand For The Traveling Band – The Tragically Hip

Intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Binger have been playing some great shows lately, both in Burlington and all around. They have a brand new song that features Stephanie Heaghney on vocals, and the usual spiritually alive lyrics. Let’s take a listen.

1.) If I knew – Binger
2.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders
3.) Freeway – David Rosane and the Zookeepers
4.) This Land Is Your Land – VT Artists

I just love the version of the classic that Kat Wright, Bob Wagner, and lots of others put together to honor Bernie Sanders and to stand behind him. Freeway has a revolutionary spirit, in a Bernie kind of way. I caught David last night at Radio Bean and enjoyed the two songs I heard. He is playing a Bernie benefit in West Newbury on Saturday. Classic from the album Bernie recorded back in the ’80’s. We get to vote for him on Tuesday here in Vermont. Last night, I went out to Higher Ground to see the Wee Folkestra. I don’t have any of their music, but many members of the band played on this album.

5.) A Quiet Pun – Joe Adler
6.) Foxy – Abbie Morin
7.) What’s In California? – Josh Glass
8.) Gold In California – The Red Telephone

I love that new Telephone song. Sean, from the band, played a great show last night at Radio Bean with his new band The Nancy Druids. I caught Josh Glass at the Marriott last Saturday and really enjoyed the show. He did a great version of that song. I caught the first set by Abbie Gail at Nectar’s last Saturday after Josh and loved it. OK, let’s play the last song from Red Flannel Hash.

9.) Where Do We Go? – Black Rabbit
10.) Affection – Guppyboy
11.) My New Mixtape – Eef
12.) Knucklehead – Screaming Broccoli

Classic from Borccoli. Such a fun song. Great new song from Eef. Guppy were a big influence on the Burlington scene in the ’90’s. Great song and album from Rabbit. I saw this band a while ago at Metal Monday and they are coming back to play Nectar’s this Monday. This is dedicated to my brother Ken who is going to the show with me.

13.) Descent Into The Maelstrom – Holy Grail
14.) No Way – Phantom Suns
15.) We Need Bigger Knives – As We Were
16.) Finder – Rocketsled

Great cover of the Madelines song from Rocket. I haven’t seen As We Were for a while but always enjoy them when I do. Killer song from Phantom who have been playing a ton of shows lately. What a rocker from Grail. That should be fun on Monday. This next band come to town every year or so. They are coming back in May with a new album. Here is one of the new songs.

17.) Paycheck – Slingshot Dakota
18.) I Need A Raise – Cave Bees
19.) Morning Again – Doll Fight
20.) Yardsale – Lendway

I miss Lendway. Great rocker from Doll Fight. Don’t we all Cave Bees, don’t we all? Killer new song from Dakota. Is it May yet? Last week I played a song from the new Gregory Douglass album. I dug into it a bit more this week and really liked this one.

21.) The Great Wide – Gregory Douglass
22.) Never Cry – David Rosane and the Zookeepers
23.) Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist
24.) This Machine – Invisible Homes

Never is another cool song from David. The lyrics suggested the Homes song, and Homes are playing The Monkey House tomorrow. Never also suggested the Jeremy Gilchrist song so I though it would be cool to line those up like that. OK, time for a couple more. Here is another new live song from When Particles Collide.

25.) Storm Cloud – When Particles Collide
26.) That’s When I Reach For My Revolver – Ninja Custodian

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. One of the legendary Burlington musicians from the ’90’s released a new ep this week. She is celebrating with a release party tonight in California. This is the title song.

1.) Cowboy Summer – Alice Austin
2.) Endless War – Jeremy Gilchrist
3.) Snow In The Controls – Dom The Barber
4.) All The Same To You – Milton Busker

Great song from Milton. I’ve been waiting until it was snowy out to play the Dommer Barber song. It isn’t really snowy out, but is in late January. I have played the Jeremy song before but that was a demo and this is the brand new studio version. Great stuff from Alice, as always. This next band played a fantastic version of this song last week at Signal Kitchen.

5.) Golden Crutch – Swale
6.) Son, You Are No Island – Torres
7.) Year Of The Snake – Tyler Daniel Bean
8.) Jack Sharp – Swale

Swale played a rocking version of that one too. Tyler played that song solo acoustic, but it had a lot of fire, and the version I just played is the full band version. Pretty cool song. Island was the song that stood out the most at the Torres show, though I really liked it all. I love the slow build and heavy surge at the end. I though it would be fun to bookend that set with Swale. OK, here is the next song on Red Flannel Hash

9.) Alienation – Black Rabbit
10.) Throw Me Away – Spill
11.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons
12.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian

Classic rocker from Ninja. FTC rocked us for a few years in the early 2000’s and put on some pretty intense shows. Spill are another great ’90’s band and that song always grabbed me. I just love that Rabbit song!! There is a cool show happening tomorrow at Twofourtwo Main with these next three bands.

13.) Last Song – Carraway
14.) No Way – Phantom Suns
15.) Nothing Important – Doom Service

Doom have a new album called Live At Mount Doom, so I got that one from that album. Great songs from Phantom and Carraway. I really have to make it to 242 Main tomorrow. OK, let’s keep rocking.

16.) Ladders – Heavy Plains
17.) Great Scott – Wave Of The Future
18.) Too Drunk – The Dirty Blondes
19.) Hello World – Screaming Skull
20.) On A Sunday – Screaming Broccoli

Killer song from the late ’80’s early ’90’s band. That Skull song is so cool. It’s a short intro followed by a shorter burst of intense rock. I just heard that the Blondes are playing at the Bowie tribute thing at Higher Ground tonight and I’m bummed I missed them. That is such a fun song from Wave. Great rocker from Plains. OK, let’s keep rocking.

21.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates and the Affiliates
22.) Not True – Peg Tassey
23.) Blue Light Shines – Gabrielle Douglas and The Dwellers
24.) Plastic Revolution

I keep singing that song “Revolution, Bern style now.” Great rocker from Gabby. Great rocker from Peg. Earthquakes had me bouncing around the studio, but of course, the other songs had me doing that too. OK, let’s keep rocking.

25.) Something I Drew – Farm
26.) Gas And Oil – Gas And Oil
27.) Weapons Factory – The Wards with the Dirty Blondes
28.) Purpose and Object – The Contrarian

I love that song from Casey Merlin Rae. Classic from the ’80’s punk band. That was a re-recorded version with a bit of help from Diane Sullivan on vocals. Great song from Beano’s solo band. Hmmm, Farm. I liked the Torres show so much, I want to toss in another song. This is the title song from the new album.

29.) Sprinter – Torres
30.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s been a super warm, maybe in the 70’s, day and it’s warm this evening. A lot of people are out and about and enjoying the night. Today is the 5th of November, the day Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament. As we have evolved over the years, there is less of a need for such drastic action. In fact, all we have to do is elect reasonable and compassionate and smart people, and we could have a great government. Maybe one day. Tonight, let’s begin with Burlington itself. It was founded in 1865 and was a major lumber mill port that brought wood from Quebec to the eastern US. Early on, it was called the Queen City of New England. Let’s begin with some Burlington music about queens.

1.) Rock ‘n Roll Queen – Peg Tassey MUSIC
2.) We Rock Out 2 Queen – Rue Mevlana
3.) Queen Of Hostility – Doll Fight
4.) I’d Hate To Be Me – Queen Tangerine

Some of the regal music from Burlington. It’s interesting to see how we have evolved. We began by needing a strong leader, and have moved to a system were we can govern ourselves more and more. If we are cool about it, we have a lot of potential. OK, last Friday I caught a ton of cool music. I started with this band, although the set I caught was them covering the Elvis Costello album Blood and Chocolate. This is the next song from No Need To Beg.

5.) Drinking For Two – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
6.) I Forgot – Maryse Smith
7.) Singing – Arc Iris
8.) King Grifter – The Mountain Says No
9.) I Think I’m Turning Into A Robot – Wave of the Future

I began the night at The Skinny Pancake to see Phil’s first set, then hustled to Light Club Lamp Shop to catch Maryse Smith‘s stunning set. Arc Iris followed and were amazing as always. I hustled over to Finnegan’s and missed Mountain, but caught some of Wave’s wonderful set, including that fun song. There’s a fun show at Finnegan’s tomorrow with some of the guys in Rough Francis playing as Aspero Siacos, and a couple of other cool bands, like this one.

10.) Hungry – Heavy Plains
11.) Destroying Everything They See – Blue Button
12.) MSP2 – ROUGH FRANCIS

It will be interesting to see what AS sound like, but other two will certainly be killer. Saturday is the day Radio Bean has it’s birthday. As always they will have bands play from 8am to 2am, with about 15 minutes per band. This next band always kick it off.

13.) Chuck Berry – Dino Bravo VT
14.) Toejam – The Toes
15.) The Mime – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
16.) One More Sunset – Violet Ultraviolette

I’m psyched to see all of those bands play. I’m psyched to see these next ones too.

17.) ComeTooLate – Paper Castles
18.) Gonna Stay Up All Night Long – The Eames Brothers
19.) Pauses – Lowell Thompson and Crown Pilot
20.) Crow King – Binger

I’m sorry I missed Binger playing the Scooby Doo show last weekend but am psyched to catch up with them this Saturday. All of those bands rocked, but there will be a lot of music played that day. Here are some of the mellower bands that will play.

21.) Guitar – Michael Chorney and Hollar General
22.) Windy Pines – Kat Wright and Brett Hughes
23.) Matter Of Time – Eric George
24.) Puff The Magic Dragon – Linda Bassick

I’m not sure if Linda is playing kids songs or older people’s songs or both, but it will be fun to find out. I may have to catch Eric for the first time. Kat and Brett always sound nice. Sweet song from Michael. This next song is by Caroline Marie, who has played every Bean Birthday.

25.) Once Upon – Vedora
26.) The Night Syd Barret Died – Colin Nicholas Clary
27.) By My Side – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
28.) The Next Instead – Swale

I’m thoroughly excited to see Swale already, is it Saturday yet?. Kat and the band are always great. I finally got the see Emily play joke in Barret. I bet he plays that one, what with the Radio Bean references and all. Killer song from Caroline. Songs 13 to 28 are just a tiny hint of what that day will sound like. Is it Saturday yet??? OK, let’s end where we began, with another song from the Queen herself, then I will say goodbye.

29.) I Remember/The Jam – Peg Tassey
30.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s been a beautiful week in Burlington and tonight the town is hopping. There are people all over the place, lots of cars and motorcycles driving up and down main st. The kids went back to school this week, but it’s still a great summer night in town. Tonight I want to start with the upcoming Presidential campaign that is shaping up. No matter what you think, it’s important to elect smart compassionate people who are aware of the subtle intricacies of foreign policy. This first song is about AQ Kahn, the father of the Pakistani atomic bomb, and a cute ditty about unrequited love. Please choose leaders who know more about these kinds of things than rock stars. This is My Atom Girl by the Dirtminers on Wbkm and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) My Atom Girl – Dirtminers
2.) Great Escape – Jeremy Gilchrist
3.) Devil Knows My Name – Great Western

Yea, I finally got a copy of that song that has been played all over Burlington for the last year or so. Thanks Ryan Osswald. Killer song from the politically aware and very thoughtful Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter. He played a pretty cool show at Radio Bean last Saturday. Yes, when choosing a Presidential candidate, it’s nice if they have a good understanding of the American experience, but as the late great Bill Hicks (AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story) once said, “It’s a round world last time I checked” OK, back to music. Burlington had a wonderful guest come and play at Nectar’s for us last night. His name is Yonrico Scott and he’s played with the Derek Trucks Band and dozens of others. He was joined by a bunch of excellent Burlington musicians like Bob Wagner, Shane Hardiman, Josh Weinstein and others. Kat Wright got up and sang a couple of songs with him, which was pretty cool.

4.) Them Changes – Yonrico Scot
5.) You’ll Be The Sky – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
6.) Buttonz – Binger
7.) Man On The Side – Joshua Glass Music

I went to Radio Bean and saw acoustic Barbacoa then some of Sammich, which featured Dalton Muzzy from Binger on drums and Josh Glass on keys. They were pretty cool. I saw some of their set, popped over to Nectar’s for most of Yonrico Scot’s first set, then caught the end of Sammich. It was a fun time. In 2013 a well liked and regarded local DJ passed away from leukemia at age 38. Andy Williams, also know as DJ A-Dog, created such love that there was a huge party in his memory last year at Arts Riot. This year the party is on Saturday and is at both Nectar’s and Club Metronome with tons of DJs all day and night, and a show from Rough Francis.

8.) U Thought U Nu-Funk intro… – DJ A-Dog
9.) Exit Strategy – Rue Mevlana
10.) Righteous – ROUGH FRANCIS

I’m pretty sure Francis really though A-Dog was righteous, so I wanted to play that one. Rue are playing a show in a couple of weeks called Motley Rue. Could be interesting. OK, here is the next song from JV.

11.) King Grifter – The Mountain Says No
12.) We Need Bigger Knives – As We Were
13.) Circumstance – Tokyo Storm Warning
14.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight

I love that song, and miss Doll Fight! Classic ’90’s Burlington rock song from Tokyo. I haven’t caught up with As in a while and would really like to. Killer Mountain song!! I first saw this next band when they played one of the legendary parties at Max Krauss‘ house. He moved to Boston and joined them for a new EP.

15.) Auxiliary Girl – Night Slice
16.) Flipside – Kimberly White Project
17.) Bomb – Envy

Classic from Burlington’s ’90’s. I totally cheated with Flipside since KWP play in the Carolinas, but a local musician, who now lives down there, turned me on to them, and I wanted to play a song. Thanks for the heads up Brian Wardrep. This next band played around New England some time ago, had a beer named after them at Vt Pub, then eventually broke up. They are doing a reunion show at Higher Ground on September 5th.

18.) Ocheh (Someday I) – Currently Nameless
19.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
20.) Tune Of An Onion – Currently Nameless

Sean Daily, aka Milton Busker, used to play with Nameless so I though it would be fun to toss one of his songs in between two of theirs. He’s playing Aug 30 at Radio Bean with his new band The Grim Work. This next band played around from 2003-2012 and released this compilation called When Nobody Was Looking. They featured Adam Rabin who went on to join Elephants Of Scotland, and totally flew under my radar. Rats. .

21.) Attempt No Landing Aria – Mailbox
22.) Micronesia – Mailbox
23.) The Other Room (live) – Elephants of Scotland

Elephants are a long way into the third studio album. I can’t wait. Tomorrow at Radio Bean is Vermont Joy Parade, Duke Aeroplane & The Wrong Numbers, and a solo set from Anna Pardenik.

24.) Trouble Of Your Bretheren – Anna Pardenik
25.) This Land Is Your Land – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders

Getting back to the beginning, if you want a leader who will take care of your bretheren Bernie will do the job nicely. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. I had great plans to see lots of music this week, but twisted my ankle on Friday and sat (with leg up and icepack on) out too much of it. It’s a bit better now so I should be all set soon. Today has been cloudy and cool and humid and I’ve been in a spacey sort of mood. Let’s take a trip through the last 30 years in town and start with Move Through Time by Persian Claws on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Move Through Time – Persian Claws
2.) Pauses – Black Rabbit
3.) Your Downtown Aperture – Video Pigeon
4.) All My Life – Wide Wail

Killer song from a classic band from Burlington’s glorious ’90’s. Some people say Burlington bands come in waves and there are times when there is not much around. Even in those troughs bands like Video Pigeon were around rocking beautifully. Killer new song from Rabbit. Great song from the Claws!! OK, let’s stay in the ’90’s for a bit.

5.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy
6.) Last Man Standing – Band X
7.) Jules Rosen and Joe Steel – Brave The Vertigo
8.) One More Grave – The Contrarian

Casey Merlin Rae used to play in bands in town, then wrote the music column for Seven Days and is now working in DC to help find ways for musicians to get paid for their music. Yea!! I really wanted to check out Vertigo at Radio Bean last night, but the ankle said no. Killer song from Band X who sort of evolved into Elephants of Scotland. OK, let’s go on to the next song on JV, the album I’m playing all the way through week after week, song after song.

9.) Who could Say – The Mountain Says No
10.) Mad Captain – Brother Zag
11.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara
12.) Abilene – The Lonestar Chain

I’ve been watching the flooding in Texas and saw a mention on the Weather Chanel of Abilene and thought of Burette Douglas and this song. Killer song from Hana. Zag is one of the known unknown cool artists in town. Mountain will be at Radio Bean on Saturday and I really want to make it to the show. I was thinking of checking out this next band when they played Summervale today, but walking down the hill away from the radio station was not going to happen today, short of an act from God.

13.) Dear God – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
14.) Dancing In Dreamtime – Jerichovox
15.) Holiday – Guppyboy
16.) Old Man – Will

Killer song from the Rutland band from the early 2000’s. When they broke up they became Thompson Gunner and Split Tongue Crow. Killer song from the classic ’90’s band. Jericho are playing around a bit and were really cool when I saw them a couple of months back. OK, let’s go back to the early ’80’s, or maybe ’70’s.

17.) At The Diner – Zoot Wilson
18.) 2012 – Lobot
19.) Waterlanding – Swale
20.) Ladders – Heavy Plains

Nice song from the super new band who will be at Nectar’s tomorrow. Swale and one other band will be there too. A few weeks back Chris Farnsworth gave me a collection of songs that Lobot had left over. That one was pretty cool. Hmmm, Zoot. This next band is the other one playing Nectar’s tomorrow.

21.) Ruffians – ROUGH FRANCIS
22.) Gas And Oil – Gas And Oil
23.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight
24.) Stop – REDadmirial

Admiral were at The Old North Ender last night. I had hopes of checking out some of them then heading to the Bean for Vertigo, but it was the couch and ice for me. I’ve got to go see them! Killer song from the 2000’s punk band. Gas was Beano Parker, from the Wards, side project and really rocked! OK, in classic Burlington style, this next band will be at the Bean at the same time as the Nectar’s show tomorrow. Rats!! I love this band.

25.) It’s Happening – Anachronist
26.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from doing my local music radio show on internet only WBKM.org. It started slow and classic then began to rock, then opened up to the world.

Song before: Closer To The Heart – RUSH

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. On Sunday I went to Montreal with my brother Ken to see Rush, and listened to a couple of old shows. This song jumped out at me so I wanted to start the night here. This is Yardsale by Lendway on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Yardsale – Lendway
2.) Twisted – Guppyboy
3.) You Home (Keep Safe Mix) – Eef
4.) Good Witch – Cricket Blue

Cricket have been getting a lot of mentions for their beautiful music. I just checked out their EP today and it’s quite nice. Eef are getting back together for some shows. Cool. I can’t believe I don’t play Guppyboy more often. This next singer is in town for a few days.

5.) Left One In The Rain – Alice Austin
6.) All The Same To You – Milton Busker
7.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith
8.) The North – Hana Zara

Love the reference to the old north end of Burlington in that song. Maryse Smith played a killer show at Signal Kitchen last week. Milton will be at Radio Bean tomorrow at 8:30. OK, let’s rock with the next song from JV.

9.) Ricky The Rider – The Mountain Says No
10.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit
11.) Destroying Everything You See – Blue Button
12.) Lunacy – Cave Bees

Killer rocking song from the Bees! BB are a great band too! Black Rabbit have a new album out called Red Flannel Hash. It’s really good and that was the first song. This next band are playing tomorrow at Signal Kitchen.

13.) Popular Crowd – Swale
14.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
15.) Alienation – Black Rabbit
16.) Sugar Coated Candy Stix – Dino Bravo VT

Dino will play with The Mountain Says No Saturday night at The Monkey House when Mountain officially release JV. Another killer new Rabbit song. I just can’t get enough of Earthquakes. Tonight at Light Club Lamp Shop Jeff Howlett is taking tintype pictures of Burlington people. I stopped in earlier and had my picture taken. I’ll stop by later to pick it up. He used to be a Burlington rocker and this is one of his bands.

17.) Null – Five Seconds Expired
18.) Morning Again – Doll Fight
19.) Void – The Lavas
20.) Blue Sky – Black Rabbit

Another great new Rabbit song. Zola Turn evolved into Queen Tangerine who evolved into The Lavas. I’ve always liked that song. Doll Fight used to rock this town hard, and featured Jane Boxall Percussion who also plays drums on the new Rabbit album. This is another classic band from the ’90’s.

21.) Throw Me Away – Spill
22.) Linea – Vetica
23.) Space Weed Zombies – Wave of the Future

Killer song recorded live at Nectar’s. I just loved Vetica. So, this week a couple of things happened in the psyche of America and we took a couple of small steps towards dealing with racial issues. The Fair Housing Act was upheld and many businesses have started disassociating themselves with symbols that promote ideas of separation, when in fact, we all started from the same root. Here are some songs about getting past the physical and seeing people for who they are, not just what they look like.

24.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
25.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks (AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
26.) We Shall Overcome – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and 30 Vt musicians

Bernie has been fighting for everyone to get an equal chance for decades. Run Bernie Run! Bill told it like no one else could. Joe just nailed the idea of inclusion on that one. Binger do the same on these three.

27.) Sequoia I, II, and III – Binger
28.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I used the excuse of my birthday being last Tuesday to play a few of the songs I’m most passionate about,

Song before: Sparks – The Color Exchange

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It cooled off a little this week and we had a nice thunder and lightning storm, but today was a beautiful sunny day. There are lots of people about and a joyous spirit in the air. I drove to New Hampshire and back yesterday and the mountains of Vermont are lush with tons of shades of green. Enjoy this moment and enjoy your loved ones whenever you can. It was my birthday this week and I’m going to pull out a few of the bands and songs I’m most passionate about. If your band is not on this list it’s more that I only have two hours, not that I meant to miss you. This song has been rocking my world lately. This is Little French Earthquakes by Phil Yates and the Affiliates on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind of Music.

1.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
2.) Teenage Mother Earth – The Red Telephone
3.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
4.) Tibbar Tibbar – Black Rabbit

I knew I had to play a Rabbit song and that was the first one that really caught me, and still does. Love that classic from ZT. It must have been a beautiful time, it must have been a terrible time, it must have been a beautiful terrible time indeed. That one has been speaking to me lately. Let’s continue through Swale’s album The Next Instead.

5.) Golden Crutch – Swale
6.) It Shows – Sarah Blacker
7.) Presence – Satori Bob
8.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara

I love the way Hana’s lyrics walk you through a picture. Great song from John Baumann and Robert Gagnon. That’s another song from Sarah’s new album In Waves. It’s not quite out but can be pre-ordered. This next artist is in California, but put a ton of music into this town over several years.

9.) Never Cry Halo – Alice Austin
10.) Chuck Berry – Dino Bravo VT
11.) Las Vegas – Ninja Custodian
12.) Trading Bullets – Fire The Cannons

They put on some very intense rock shows in the 2000’s. Classic from Ninja. Dino just played a show in Stowe where they were billed as Dino Barvo, possibly and puppet show. This next band have a new album and a new video for this song.

13.) Playtime – Death World Wide
14.) Mine All Mine – Cave Bees
15.) Gas and Oil – Gas and Oil
16.) This Machine – Invisible Homes

I love the nod to Woody Guthrie and the idea of killing fascist ideas with words and music and ideas and inspiration instead of with bullets. Killer song from Beano Parker’s non Wards band. There’s everything to love about the Cave Bees. Speaking of ideas that could kill fascists and Woody.

17.) This Land Is Your Land – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and 30 Vermont musicians
18.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
19.) U Can Love If U Want To – Peg Tassey MUSIC
20.) I Put A Spell On You – Marco Benevento and Kat Wright

That was recorded live at Radio Bean. It doesn’t get more Burlington than that. Killer song from Peg. Brothers and Sisters is dedicated to my brother Ken and all of the musicians that I feel are my brothers and sisters. You know who you are. Thanks for the beautiful song Joe! Bernie is the kind of guy who has spent his whole life trying to kill fascists with wonderful ideas. OK, on Tuesday I turned 50. That means I was born in….

21.) 1965 – The New Siberians
22.) Statistik – The Mountain Says No
23.) TFAY – Elephants of Scotland
24.) Plastic Revolution – Doll Fight

Love that song from DF. Revolution Doll style now! I just love that Elephants song so much! I finally got the Mountain songs into a playable format. I love the build in that song. Yea, Siberians. This is a great song from a friend of the show.

25.) Letter From The 21st – Jeremy Gilchrist
25.) I Forgot – Maryse Smith
26.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

I just love that song. I’ve loved the Maryse Smith song since I first heard it. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from my 100th local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. My set of songs kept shrinking as the live music kept on going. I missed a criminal amount of great songs, but I played a bunch, and a bunch got played.

Song before At The Hundredth Meridian – The Tragically Hip (thanks for the idea Skipper Horner)

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’ve been with WBKM for about two years now and still remember the day Eric sent me a message on Facebook saying they were thinking of having a local music show on their internet radio station. I came into the studio a couple of times to check it out, meet Tony, and we set it up, and here I am doing my 100th show. I’m going to start out with a set of classics, but first here’s a word from the wonderful folks at Big Heavy World.

Big Heavy World congrats on the 100th show promo
1.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
2.) All My Life – Wide Wail
3.) Bomb – Envy
4.) Jan Michael Vincent – Chin Ho

What a classic from Chin Ho! They used to play that all over town. Same goes for the other three. They are some of the greatest songs to come out of Vermont. OK, let’s play the next song on Many Things & Many Scenes

5.) Mirror Mirror – Joe Adler

I love that song, especially seeing it live. Let me ask my guest if we should play some more Joe songs. Hi Joe. (Joe, Eric Segalstad, and I chat for a little, then they begin to play. Joe was singing and playing acoustic guitar and Eric was alternating acoustic guitar and mandolin.)

6.) Midnight Jones and the Jimmer – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
7.) A Quiet Pun – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
8.) Coffee and Eggs – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
9.) Brothers And Sisters (dedicated to my brother Ken and to Johnnie Day Durand) – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger
10.) The Only Night – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger

Thanks so much for playing those beautiful songs. OK, let’s play some more Burlington classics.

11.) If You Get Lost – Swale
12.) Killer Bee Bop – Zoot Wilson
13.) Be A Good Citizen – Pinhead

Three classic Burlington songs from three different eras, all of which have laid the ground for the fertile music scene we now have. There are so many great musicians in town and my next guest is one of them. Hi Aaron Flinn (we chat and then he starts playing his acoustic guitar and singing).

14.) Love Is A Part (probable title) – Aaron Flinn
15.) Fractured And Reset – Aaron Flinn

Thanks for playing those. That was great! OK, let’s play some more classic VT songs.

16.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
17.) Poem For Torin/Ethan’s Stoned – Peg Tassey MUSIC
18.) Mary – Plan B

What a great over the top rocking song. It’s Nectar’s 40th birthday and I saw an image somewhere of their old booking calender. It had Phish one week and Plan B the next. Classic great music from Peg and The Cush and a nice nod to Ethan Azarian in the Peg song. Well. there are lots of great old songs, but there are a lot of great new ones too. Here are some neo-classic Burlington songs.

19.) Say It – Anachronist
20.) Above The Frequency – Invisible Homes
21.) Ricky The Rider – The Mountain Says No
22.) 1.21 Jigawatts – Wave of the Future

Everyone who sees Wave loves that one. Ricky will get under your skin and stay in your head. I’ve not seen ATF live but hope to soon at The Monkey House when they play with Phil Yates & The Affiliates I’m also psyched to see Jane Boxall Percussion play with Vedora Saturday at midnight at Radio Bean. Jane plays on this song too.

23.) Morning Again – Doll Fight
24.) Carnage – Black Rabbit
25.) Not A Nice Guy – ROUGH FRANCIS

I remember spending some very sweaty hours in the north end of Burlington during the video shoot for that song. Jane also plays drums with Rabbit. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it a hundred times more.

To Be Over – Yes (official)
Weeping Willow – Persian Claws

Song before: Lake Song – The Decemberists

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s fairly warm for a January night, through the wind is a little cool. It was a nice walk in this evening and it was a nice walk downtown last night when I saw this first singer at Nectar’s. This is Better Half by Abbie Morin on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Better Half – Abbie Morin
2.) Hopin’ That I’m Wrong – Will
3.) Powder – The New Siberians

Great song from the Siberians last album. They achieved their Kickstarter goal but if people keep chipping in, they will make the album cooler. Love that song from Will. I’ve got to check out Abbie again, maybe sometime when a killer band did not just play before her. OK, on to the next song from Joe Adler‘s Many Things & Many Scenes.

4.) Many A Girl (Back of a Sail) – Joe Adler
5.) Secret Makeout Factory – And The Kids
6.) Lawnfire – The Pants
7.) Burn It Down Bernadette – Phil Yates & The Affiliates

Great song from the upcoming new Phil album. Classic ’90’s band The Pants, and I had to play a song of theirs following the ATK song. Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger played a nice version of that at Nectar’s last night, as well as some stunning versions of some of his other songs. I’m slowly getting to know this next band.

8.) This Machine – Invisible Homes
9.) Space Opera – Aram Bedrosian
10.) AV6 – Bad Smell
11.) Give Me All Your Love – Madaila

I should check out their music more. I really like that song. Nice music from Raph Worrick and Jane Boxall Percussion. Burlington is such a small town, I ran into Aram in the grocery store before the show. Last week I played two new Alice Austin songs but she put three out. I would be remiss if I did not play the third one.

12.) What If I Don’t Go? – Alice Austin
13.) Ordinary Day – Milton Busker
14.) Lithuania – Hana Zara
15.) The Time Traveler – Jeremy Gilchrist

Jeremy is doing the Rock Lotto thing Saturday morning. It’s where a bunch of musicians form new bands for the day, write three songs and do one cover and play the songs later that evening at Club Metronome. Any other musicians up for the challenge? It’s a benefit to raise money for Girls Rock Vermont. Great song from Hana. I can’t wait for the new album. It’s going to have tons of great songs!! I love that song by Milton. I saw this next band once, and would like to see them again.

16.) Singing Songs In Your Sleep – Carraway
17.) Grounded – Invisible Jet
18.) Open Road – Death World Wide
19.) Hungry – Heavy Plains

HP have their debut album coming out. They are playing Saturday at The Monkey House. Nice song from Death’s third album. Cool song from the ’90’s in Burlington. OK, let’s rock for a while.

20.) Hello World – Screaming Skulls
21.) Extouring – Jesus Christ and the Hallucinogenic Allstars
22.) Tic Toc – Doll Fight
23.) Vestibule – Blue Button

Killer song from BB. I miss Dollfight. I’ve got to catch JCHA sometime. In Burlington, there is a part of town called the Old North End and its residents are proud.

24.) Old North Ender – James Kochalka Superstar
25.) North Street – Death
26.) Wino – REDadmiral

That song was recorded live at the Old North Ender Pub on North St. Nice song from Death’s third album. It’s almost time to go but let’s rock a bit more.

27.) Everyone Likes To – Swale
28.) Institution Street – The Red Telephone
29.) Carnage – Black Rabbit
30.) Trading Bullets – Fire The Cannons

Nice eponymous song from FTC. Wow, they rocked hard for a couple of years in town. Killer song from Rabbit. I love that rocker from RT. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
