I just got back from my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm,org. I played an homage to Dark Side Of The Mountain’s homage to Pink Floyd, and some songs about Bernie Sanders.

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Former Mayor of Burlington, Bernie Sanders, did pretty well by winning four states on Super Tuesday. It’s so inspiring to see him doing so well in his run for the US Presidency. He is that rare politician who lays our specific plans to make life easier for Americans, so it’s inspiring to hear him speak, but is really inspiring because of his record of accomplishment. He has inspired a lot of citizens and artists and musicians. Here is some music inspired by Bernie Sanders.

Nice reworking of the Ramones Judy Is A Punk by the California band. Violint is a woman named Emma Sky who used to live in town. I love the references to knowing Bernie personally and the humable Feel The Bern chorus. Lovely song from Kat Wright, Bob Wagner, and the rest of the crew. It was great seeing lots of those musicians on stage with Bernie in Essex on Tuesday night. Great song from Patrick about seeing Bernie about town. Bernie and Al’s are two Burlington classics. Last week I finished the last song from the Black Rabbit album Red Flannel Hash. It’s time to start a new album to play song after song, week after week, until it’s done. Of course, it will be the album that Bernie Sanders recorded back in the 80’s with 30 Vermont musicians.

I love the vitality of the lyric in the Binger song. The whole set was about people getting along and working together to make a great world. Freeway has that feel, and is a good rocking song. Bill was a preacher on par with none, and one of the funniest people who ever walked the planet. Yea Bernie. So, something cool happened this week. Alpenglow released their first full length album.

Great fun rocker from Admiral. I love the sound and flow of the Static song. I used to work with Scott Broderick and love that song from his band. Hmmm, Alpenglow. So, I saw a cool show last week at the Rusty Nail in Stowe. They ran a school bus from Nectar’s to the show, so I took the ride and saw Dark Side of the Mountain play a stunning Pink Floyd tribute show. This was the encore.

Great rocker from the great band. Kids have been playing a ton of shows all over lately. Go see them if you ever get a chance. That is such an epic song from Peg. Sadly, she just lost her mom. My heart goes out to you Peg! This next band played Metal Mondays last year and blew me away. They came back this Monday and played another great show.

I had a great time seeing music Saturday night at the Rusty Nail. It had been a while since I’ve seen Dark Side of the Mountain play some serious Pink Floyd tunes and the idea of catching a bus from Nectar’s to go see the show in Stowe was too good to pass up. The bus was set to leave at 8 and I arrived around 7:40 and saw the yellow school bus parked in front of Nectar’s. After a few minutes lots of people started to show up and we boarded the bus and off we went. The trip was quick and fairly mellow. I thought it might be more of a party bus, but people were just chatting quietly. When we arrived I met up with Rich Haskell and Mary Wolcott and we got drinks and found a place on the floor in front of the stage.
The lights went down and the intense video production started and a heavy version of Obscured By Clouds, which fell into When You’re In, opened the show. The band were magnificent and the music vibrated every fiber of your body. They followed with Welcome To The Machine and had the whole audience in their grasp. Interstellar Overdrive was next, but around half way in, before the pinging starts, they went into something that I did not catch. It played for a short time before the opening effects from Dark Side Of The Moon kicked in. They played Speak To Me and Breathe, and took a wild ride through On The Run. The clocks went off and Time was just wonderful as they played it through and brought it back to the reprise of Breathe. I thought they would keep going, but they took an odd turn and dropped it into Young Lust. Kat Wright came out to sing it then stayed on for Have A Cigar. Kat left and the band continued on with Hey You. Shine On You Crazy Diamond followed. I wasn’t sure which parts they would play, but by the end, I’m pretty sure they played the whole thing. In the middle, Jake Whitesell laid down some intense sax playing. Wish You Were Here followed and they dropped it into Fearless and played a great version of the song. They said something about maybe taking a break, or maybe just keep on playing. They decided on the latter and the opening strains of Pigs On The Wing Part 1 began. Dogs followed then they played Pigs. They followed that with Sheep before putting Animals to bed with Pigs On The Wing Part.2. They lightened things up a little with Matthew Bryan Hagen singing a breezy San Tropez, then lit back into the intense set with Lucifer Sam. They returned to the dark side with Any Colour You Like then closed the set with Kat singing Brain Damage and Eclipse. They left the stage briefly then came back and the opening blips from Echoes began. They played it into the middle section then took a turn into Comfortably Numb. They played Numb all the way through then brought it back into the middle of Echoes then played out the full ending.
Happily exhausted, I said good night to Rich and Mary then hopped back on the bus. It was a little more chatty than the ride down, but was still fairly quite after such a stunning show. The ride home was quick and easy and the walk back to the North End from Nectar’s was uneventful. The whole show was so much fun and so easy and so great, I’m really glad I put in the effort.
Sorry, I totally slacked about writing this up. But….
You know it’s a good night of music when late in the second set the band says they have three long songs left. They say this is the shortest one, and play Comfortably Numb. They leave the stage, come back and play Pigs On A Wing (part1) and let it flow into Dogs, then follow with Echoes. I love Dark Side Of The Mountain!!!!!!

I had a really good time at Dark Side Of The Mountain last night at Nectar’s. Christopher Larrow wanted to go, so we headed out around 9:30, and got there a little early. I was psyched to see Matthew Bryan Hagen setting up with the band.
When it was showtime, the band took the stage in white jumpsuits. Matt reached over to the keyboard and hit one key. The plink sound signaled the beginning of Echoes, and we were off. They sounded even better than last week, and they played a monstrous version of the first half of the song. As it slowed into the middle section, guitarist Bob Wagner and bassist Josh Weinstein spent most of the time close to the floor, playing and twiddling. Dan Munzing’s keys kept things trippy, and Matt Burr’s drumming was Nick Mason hypnotic. Mr Hagen threw in some sonic chaos with some cool theremin, and used a power drill to elicit some searing notes from his guitar. They drifted through it for a while when the opening strains of Speak to Me began. They followed it into Breathe and suddenly we were on the Dark Side Of The Moon. On The Run was especially trippy and tons of fun. Time was great as always. Again, this week, they had an extra microphone on the stage. I expected Bob to play the vocal parts of Great Gig In The Sky on guitar again, but they were joined by a guy, who may have been Chamberlin’s Mark Daly. Whomever he was, he sang the hell out of Gig. I used to think the only guy who could sing that was Scott Fultz, but apparently there are at least two. The packed audience was stunned and thrilled.
The band kept things going and brought out Kat Wright to sing Money. She was joined by sax player, Jake Whitesell. His playing was great, and her singing was cool and smooth. They stayed and helped Us And Them soar to fantastic heights, but left the stage as the band jammed out Any Color You Like. Kat returned for Brain Damage and Eclipse and everyone in the room was having a great time. As the song faded they drifted back into the middle section of Echoes and brought it back to full fury as they played the end part. After that, it was time for a set break.
Chris headed out, but I settled in for set 2. The band came out in animal masks and lit into Pigs On A Wing (part 1) and let it flow into Dogs. They followed with Shine On You Crazy Diamond and the sax player returned for some killer riffs. They followed with Run Like Hell and put a killer jam into the middle. Kat returned to get her Roy Harper on and sang a great version of Have A Cigar. Next, they went way back for Lucifer Sam and threw in and Arnold Lane chant. They followed with a rousing Young Lust, then jammed out Interstellar Overdrive, with a journey through Set The Controls For The Heart Of The sun in the middle. A quick run through In The Flesh rocked the place hard. They mellowed it out a bit with Wish You Were Here and let it flow into Fearless. The heavy strains of Obscured By Clouds followed and they let it go into When You’re In, and that was it.
They did not even make it off the stage when the encore demand started. Instead of leaving and coming back, they just stayed and unleashed a killer Comfortably Numb.
That truly was the end of the set. I headed out the door and walked up a chilly Church St. The clock said 2:15 and I had a delightful walk home. They are doing this again next Wednesday, again for free at Nectar’s, and on the 29th at Club Metronome with Marco Benevento. I’ve got to get a ticket soon.

I had a great time last Wednesday seeing the Pink Floyd cover band Dark Side Of The Mountain at Nectar’s. Bob Wagner played guitar and Matt Burr was on drums. They were joined by Josh Weinstein on bass and Dan Munzing on keys.
I had forgotten about the show, but Wednesday is my Saturday, so after an afternoon nap, Rich Haskell stopped by and said let’s go. We did.
When we arrived, there were white tarps along the back and side wall. White tarps hung from the keyboards and he monitors. A modified Dark Side cover was projected on the back walls with what looked like a sine wave, that crested into a mountain peak, taking the place of the line going into and out of the pyramid. The rainbow was, of course, there too. One look at that, and I knew it was going to be fun.
We hung out for a bit and I was chatting with Jeff LaBossiere and Chris Farnsworth when the band started to play. I think they opened with Obscured By Clouds and ran it into When You’re In. They sounded great from the first note, and some cool, liquid projections floated on and around the stage. They followed with a fun Have A Cigar and then played side one of Dark Side. There was a tiny bit more of a blues edge to the songs, and a hair less of the psychedelic side, but for the most part, they sounded wonderful. The intro was pretty short, On the Run was a bit of a jam, and the extra microphone on the stage was not used by any of Vermont’s amazing women who could sing the Great Gig parts, but rather Bob played them on guitar. They wrapped it nicely going from Time back into Breathe. I thought for sure they would play the whole album, so I was surprised when they were joined by anther guitar player, who’s name I missed, but was as good as Bob, for Comfortably Numb. It was pretty over the top and ended the first set.
The set break was not too long and they returned with the second guitarist, D. Davis (for most if not all of the second set) and a rocking Young Lust. They followed with a fun journey through Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun. It was epic and wonderful. Up next, they went back to the Wall for In The Flesh, Another Brick pt 1->Another Brick pt 2, then Hey You. While it did not sound exactly like Floyd, it was stunningly close and sounded like a rock band really going for it. Wish You Were Here was pretty sweet, Interstellar Overdive rocked hard, then they closed with Brain Damage/Eclipse. They came out for a nice encore of Shine On You Crazy Diamond and ended the night with Run Like Hell.
The paying was great, the lights were hypnotizing and the packed audience had a great time. They are doing this for the next two Wednesdays, for no cover charge, then will be joined by Marco Benevento at Club Metronome on December 29th. Unlike the free Nectar’s shows, that one will cost a bit of money. I’m sure it will be worth every penny.
