I just got back from doing my local music radio show. I walked in unprepared but think I pulled out a fun one.

Song before: The Rakes Song – The Decemberists

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s 9pm and already dark. It’s still been rainy and chilly at night and sunny and warm but not super hot. It looks like this will not be one of the warmer summers on record, but there have been many stunning days. I caught some of The Precipice: A Vermont Music Festival last weekend and saw some great music. One of the artists that I really enjoyed was Abbie Morin, so I got her album and here is Peace Of Mind on WBKM.org and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Peace Of Mind – Abbie Morin
2.) I Walk The Line – Zoot Wilson
3.) Avalon – Split Tongue Crow
4.) Two Sleepy Arms – Lendway

The High Breaks played a super cool show at Radio Bean at the Precipice. Three of the guys used to be in Lendway, so I wanted to play Arms since I have no Breaks to play. I love Split Tongue Crow and that is just a gorgeous song. Fun cover from Zoot. I think he said that was the modern version. Abbie is going to hit the road soon. If she’s in your town, check out her show. After the Breaks set I ran into Todd Gevry and asked if he had heard of And The Kids. He said he had heard the name. I recommended staying and listening. After their set he seemed pretty enthusiastic. I thought they were great and they played a killer version of this song.

5.) All Day All Night – And The Kids
6.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
7.) Sequoia 3 – Binger
8.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
9.) We Shall Overcome – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders

I’m missing the Republican debate tonight, and I’m assuming I’m just going to miss 10-17 people saying the same Approved Talking Points. I had to play Bernie to counter some of that. Bill’s message still resonates hard. Binger played a killer version of 3 at the Precipice, and some pretty killer other songs too. I caught a bit of Johnnie Day Durand playing saw at The Precipice and wanted to play Brothers to give you a hint, and to thank Joe for all that he has done to make our town sound great. Love that Kids song. I’m going to play this next song because I love it and it’s great.

10.) If You Get Lost – Swale
11.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
12.) It’s Real Again – Zola Turn

I think I played all three of those songs because I love them and they are great. OK, on to the next song from The Mountain Says No’s album JV. This is the eponymous song.

13.) The Mountain – The Mountain Says No
14.) Can’t Feel It – Vetica
15.) Dead Or In Jail – Crazyhearse
16.) Holmes, Sweet Holmes – Cameo Harlot

I miss Harlot. Crazy just played the Radio Bean last Tuesday. I love the Vetica song. Hmmm, Mountain. OK, let’s go classic.

17.) First Kiss – Peg Tassey MUSIC
18.) Flypaper – Persian Claws
19.) Always Monica-Down At The Duck – Chin Ho

Three Burlington classics from three different eras. Great songs too. This is another beautiful song that I love.

20.) If Time Was A River – Anna Pardenik
21.) WhoNeedsFriends – Paper Castles
22.) Clocks On the Wall – Jeremy Gilchrist

Great song with great lyrics. Thanks Jeremy. Castles played a killer set at the Precipice at the Light Club Lamp Shop. Great song from Anna. This next song seems to be getting some traction.

23.) Burn It Down Bernadette – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
24.) Knight Ov Swords – The Contrarian
25.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from doing my local music radio show on internet only WBKM.org. It started slow and classic then began to rock, then opened up to the world.

Song before: Closer To The Heart – RUSH

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of Burlington. On Sunday I went to Montreal with my brother Ken to see Rush, and listened to a couple of old shows. This song jumped out at me so I wanted to start the night here. This is Yardsale by Lendway on WBKM and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Yardsale – Lendway
2.) Twisted – Guppyboy
3.) You Home (Keep Safe Mix) – Eef
4.) Good Witch – Cricket Blue

Cricket have been getting a lot of mentions for their beautiful music. I just checked out their EP today and it’s quite nice. Eef are getting back together for some shows. Cool. I can’t believe I don’t play Guppyboy more often. This next singer is in town for a few days.

5.) Left One In The Rain – Alice Austin
6.) All The Same To You – Milton Busker
7.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith
8.) The North – Hana Zara

Love the reference to the old north end of Burlington in that song. Maryse Smith played a killer show at Signal Kitchen last week. Milton will be at Radio Bean tomorrow at 8:30. OK, let’s rock with the next song from JV.

9.) Ricky The Rider – The Mountain Says No
10.) Nicky Says – Black Rabbit
11.) Destroying Everything You See – Blue Button
12.) Lunacy – Cave Bees

Killer rocking song from the Bees! BB are a great band too! Black Rabbit have a new album out called Red Flannel Hash. It’s really good and that was the first song. This next band are playing tomorrow at Signal Kitchen.

13.) Popular Crowd – Swale
14.) Little French Earthquakes – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
15.) Alienation – Black Rabbit
16.) Sugar Coated Candy Stix – Dino Bravo VT

Dino will play with The Mountain Says No Saturday night at The Monkey House when Mountain officially release JV. Another killer new Rabbit song. I just can’t get enough of Earthquakes. Tonight at Light Club Lamp Shop Jeff Howlett is taking tintype pictures of Burlington people. I stopped in earlier and had my picture taken. I’ll stop by later to pick it up. He used to be a Burlington rocker and this is one of his bands.

17.) Null – Five Seconds Expired
18.) Morning Again – Doll Fight
19.) Void – The Lavas
20.) Blue Sky – Black Rabbit

Another great new Rabbit song. Zola Turn evolved into Queen Tangerine who evolved into The Lavas. I’ve always liked that song. Doll Fight used to rock this town hard, and featured Jane Boxall Percussion who also plays drums on the new Rabbit album. This is another classic band from the ’90’s.

21.) Throw Me Away – Spill
22.) Linea – Vetica
23.) Space Weed Zombies – Wave of the Future

Killer song recorded live at Nectar’s. I just loved Vetica. So, this week a couple of things happened in the psyche of America and we took a couple of small steps towards dealing with racial issues. The Fair Housing Act was upheld and many businesses have started disassociating themselves with symbols that promote ideas of separation, when in fact, we all started from the same root. Here are some songs about getting past the physical and seeing people for who they are, not just what they look like.

24.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler
25.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks (AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
26.) We Shall Overcome – U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and 30 Vt musicians

Bernie has been fighting for everyone to get an equal chance for decades. Run Bernie Run! Bill told it like no one else could. Joe just nailed the idea of inclusion on that one. Binger do the same on these three.

27.) Sequoia I, II, and III – Binger
28.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

I just got back from doing my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org. I played a lot of Christmas songs and some songs about what Christmas could mean.

Song before: Blue Light Shines – Gabrielle Douglas and the Dwellers

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I’m going to play a bunch of local artists doing Christmas songs but before I get into it, earlier today I was chatting with a musician about songs having value and being worth buying. He had a new single out and offered to give me a copy but I opted to purchase it instead. This is Old Souls Of Chatham County by Jeremy Gilchrist on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Old Souls Of Chatham County – Jeremy Gilchrist
2.) I donwannago (Surfin) – Super Music Band
3.) Beautiful Bones (live) – Lobot
4.) Christmas Sled – The Mountain Says No

Love that song by Mountain. Can’t wait to see them January 3rd at The Monkey House with Black Rabbit and Dino Bravo VT. Chris Farnsworth plays guitar with Dino and Lobot and just got me a collection of 6 leftover Lobot songs. What a great guitar player. Dino also are playing tonight at Club Metronome. Another new song from Doug McAllister‘s new band. He’s in California now but has deep Vermont roots. Great song from Jeremy, totally worth the $ 1.00 I paid. OK, let’s dive into Christmas songs.

5.) Carol Of The Bells – Gordon Stone Trio
6.) It Came Upon A Midnight Clear – Electric Halo
7.) Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas – Greg Alexander
8.) Merry Christmas Baby – Sandra Wright.

Great version of the song by Sandra, who used to play all the time in town. Beautiful singing by Greg. Beautiful saw by Johnnie Day Durand on the Halo song. Love the banjo work on Bells. This next song is by a great supporter of the local music scene and great local musician.

9.) Santa Baby – Samara Lark Brown
10.) Frosty The Snowman – Construction Joe
11.) Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer – Linda Bassick
12.) The Christmas Song – Motel Brown
13.) Santa Claus Is Coming To Town – Scott Managan

Very elegant version of that song! Motel did a great version of that classic. I really like Linda’s take on Rudolph. That’s a fun instrumental version of Frosty. OK let’s step away from Christmas songs for a while. Last week I finished off the last song on Lipstick And Dynamite. It’s time to start a new album to play one song a week and go through the whole album. This next album features a great guy and a ton of great VT musicians. This is the first song from Many Things & Many Scenes.

14.) The Mime – Joe Adler
15.) Give Me All Your Love – Madaila
16.) Neighborhood – Black Rabbit
17.) Finally Found The One – When Particles Collide

That was not a Christmas song, but the idea of finding the one for you and using that to step forward into life is reminiscent of the love of family that we focus on at Christmas. Congratulations Particles on winning the award for best new band in Boston. That feeling of love can easily extend beyond your direct family to your friends in the neighborhood. Nice song about love by Madaila, and thanks to Mike Luoma for getting me a copy of the song just before i went on air. Seven Days did a nice article on some of the people behind the music scenes in VT, and showcased a lot of wonderful people who make it all happen. I think Mike is one of those, even if he, and hundreds of others, were not directly mentioned. This next song is not a Christmas song but is a song about love, and choosing love and is very much in the spirit.

18.) You Can Love If You Want To – Peg Tassey MUSIC
19.) Silent Night – Tammy Fletcher
20.) Jingle Bell Rock – Sarah Stickle

Great version of the classic by Sarah. Wow, what amazing singing by Tammy! Great song by Peg. Let’s keep the Christmas songs flowing.

21.) Winter Wonderland – Joshua Glass
22.) God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen – Viperhouse
23.) Little Drummer Boy – Aaron Flinn
24.) Merry X-Mas (War Is Over) – Joshua Glass Music

Wow, it’s been so many years since John Lennon wrote that song. You’d have though humanity would have caught up by now. Apparently not, but we can any time we choose. Great song by Aaron! That was a fun acid jazz version by Viper. This next song is not a Christmas song but truly invokes the spirit of peace on earth, good will toward people. They are playing right now at Manhattan Pizza and Pub but I’m on the air. I will have to catch up with them soon.

25.) Sequoia 3 – Binger
26.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks
27.) Silver Bells – Josh Glass and Jackie Buttolph
28.) White Christmas – Giovanina Bucci

Beautiful version of the classic. Great song by Josh and Jackie. I get the feeling Bill is still hanging at the evolution bell curve waiting for humanity to catch up. Maybe some day. This next song is not a Christmas song, but is seasonally appropriate.

29.) Winter – David L. Jarvis
30.) TFAY – Elephants of Scotland

Check your list, you don’t want to forget about anyone. My brother Ken is having a birthday tomorrow, and I know he likes rocking music, so I’m sending that one out to him. This next song is for my father, your father, everyone’s father and you if you are a father.

31.) The Fathers Of The Year – I See Fish People
32.) Oh Holy Night – Cait Hoffman

Beautiful version of that song. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town, let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before October – U2

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s a beautiful fall evening in Burlington. Let’s start with a band who used to play in town and have a new album done, but not yet in my hands. This is from their first ep. This is Jet Pilot High by The Red Telephone on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind of Music.

1.) Jet Pilot High – The Red Telephone
2.) 1965 – The New Siberians
3.) Satellite – Guster

Ryan Miller played a set last Friday at Radio Bean in between Swale sets. He played that song on acoustic guitar, talked Joe Adler into playing drums, and taught Amanda Gustafson the keyboard riff. It was a fun time watching it come together. Great song from the Siberians, who should have some new songs soon. Yea! I loved Swale’s sets last Friday. Here is another one from their new album The Next Instead.

4.) Before The Night – Swale
5.) Cats Were Born – And The Kids
6.) Mirror Mirror – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger

Great rocker from Joe’s new album. And The Kids played the show after Swale’s second set and brought a dedicated crowd. Keep an eye on them. I may head to The Monkey House on Saturday to check out this band.

7.) Shut Up – Gorgon
8.) Cookie Jar – Astrocat
9.) The Process – Pinhead

Classic Burlington band. Astrocat are playing the Monkey show too and that song sounded like it would go great into the Pinhead. Here is the next song from the Anachronist ep Row.

10.) Mary – Anachronist
11.) Mary – Plan B
12.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn

Zola and Plan are classic Burlington bands. Lots of great rock in both Marys. Let’s quieten things down a little.

13.) A Quiet Pun – Joe Adler
14.) You Are Not The Photograph – Swale
15.) Hollywood – Lendway

Great song by a classic Burlington band. Killer Eric Olsen guitar work in the Swale song. I listened to the whole Roots In The Rabbit Hole album today and loved this one.

16.) Calypskango – Binger
17.) Grounded – Invisible jet
18.) WalkingInCircles – Raq

I love that song. I was dancing around the studio and had the volume cranked. Great stuff from Jet. This next band are hoping to get on a cruise or open for a great bands festival, or both.

19.) Endless (pt 2) – Elephants of Scotland
20.) Afraid Of Sunlight – Marillion
21.) Going For The One – Yes (official)

I could hear Elephants open for the 2015 Marillion weekend, or play on the 2015 Cruise to the Edge with Yes, and lots of other prog bands. Links below if you would like to vote for them. Yes was live from 2004 in Essex Jct, and Marillion once played club Toast as a trio. Since we’re a little spiritual, and out of town anyway…

22.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks (AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
23.) Buttonz – Binger

Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. The nights have been cool and some of the leaves are starting to turn, but the days have been hazy, lazy, sunny and warm. It always makes me think of this song. This is the next song from Ninja Jane on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.) Curveball Dreamer – Zola Turn
2.) This Is Our Good Night – Aya Inoue
3.) Salvation and Sin – Satori Bob
4.) Big Enough – Anachronist

I loved seeing them at Waking Windows this year and wanted to pull out another of their great songs. Great song from John Baumann and Robert Gagnon. I wanted to play the Aya song because I read she was not feeling well. Let’s all think good healing thoughts for her and Sonja Clawson and everyone else who’s not feeling so well. The Zola song always makes me think of Baseball games in the summer sun. Up next is a band who just played a library and released a new EP.

5.) 40 Days – Better Things
6.) Always Monica -> Down At The Duck – Chin Ho!
7.) Grounded – Invisible Jet

Great song from the ’90’s. I think Ryan Ober is playing tomorrow at Radio Bean, though he sounds a bit different now. Great stuff from Chin Ho!, another classic Burlington band. Let’s keep the groove going with Raq.

8.) WalkingInCircles – Raq
9.) Star – The New Siberians
10.) Mirror Mirror – Joe Adler & The Rangers Of Danger

That was live from Nectar’s. His new album just came out today but I don’t have a copy yet. Expect a lot of it next week. He officially releases it next Saturday at Nectar’s. Great song by the Siberians. Next is a band I should have gone to see last Tuesday at The Monkey House. I think I would have really liked them!

11.) Mush – Phantom Suns
12.) Imaginary – Envy
13.) Mine All Mine – Cave Bees
14.) Rejected – Black Rabbit

I’m psyched for September 12 when Rabbit and the Bees rock the Monkey House!!! I love the way new music, like Phantom mixes with ’90’s music like Envy, so effortlessly. Here’s a new classic Burlington band.

15.) How It Goes – Blue Button
16.) Finally Found The One – When Particles Collide
17.) Trading Bullets – Fire The Cannons
18.) Ipso Facto – Tesla’s Revenge

It was so great to see them at the library. I hope they come back to town soon. At one point in the 2000’s I was looking for a new rock band to love. Cannons came on the scene and played some killer shows! I felt like playing a Particles song and that one just jumped into my head. Up next is another band who played the library, they’re from Rutland.

19.) Sad One Out – SADG’s
20.) Northern Memory – The Cush
21.) Voodoo Camaro – Wide Wail
22.) Crazy Hearse – Barbacoa

Not to be confused with Crazyhearse, Barbacoa’s song is two words. Great song from WW. Northern is the first song I remember from when the Cush moved back to Texas, then came back to town to play their new album. Speaking of Texas, this next guy never came to town and it’s not music, but this is Burlington’s Kind Of Attitude.

23.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks (AMERICAN The Bill Hicks Story)
24.) Purpose And Object – The Contrarian
25.) Above My Ground – Landlady

I loved the day Landlady played at Signal Kitchen and that was what Burlington sounded like at that moment. Anyone want to bring them back to town? Many times? Contrairan is Casey Ronin Rae who guided me to a lot of great music when he wrote the music column for Seven Days so many years ago. Love his songs too! I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

song after – Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors – Fish
