Song before: Countdown – Rush

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Let’s begin tonight with a cool artist who has been playing in a cool band who just released a solo album.

1.) Better Off Alone – Meg Rice
2.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
3.) Your Funeral – Zeus Springsteen
4.) 1965 – The New Siberians

That’s the next song on the Siberians great eponymous first album. Zeus played a killer show Monday at Higher Ground. Great song from Milton and it’s nice to see Meg step out. OK, this next band are from Rhode Island and they played Burlington once in the ’90’s and they have still stuck with me.

5.) We’re The Loops – The Mockingbirds
6.) Accidental Graveyard – The Dead Shakers
7.) Safe To Say – SWALE
8.) Mr Reed – Seth Yacovone Band

Seth and the band will be at the Old Post in South Burlington on Saturday. Swale will be at ArtsRiot on Saturday. The Shakers will be at Junktiques Collective on Saturday. If you like all three songs, you will have a tough choice to make. This next band will be at Radio Bean on Sunday, yea.

9.) The Space Between – The Nancy Druids
10.) Right Bright Lord – The Mountain Says No
11.) Waste Of Time – Preece
12.) If You Die – The Wards
13.) Jurassic Bark – Doom Service

That is on the Live From Robot Dog Studio Volume 2 that just came out. I really want to thank Ray Padgett from County Tracks for writing such a nice story about my struggle with my mother’s death last year, and the way that music helped me get through it. That was very nice. The Wards rocked us in the ’80’s and will continue rocking us later this evening. Great songs from Preece and Mountain. Both can be obtained for free on the Live From Robot Dog Studio Volume 2 album. I’m so psyched to see the Druids on Sunday. OK, It’s time to talk about a naughty word that apparently is fine to say in public by a fine moral leader like the President Of The United States. Wow, our decency standards as a nation are just gone now, as proven by the moral tolerance of the President’s speech by his “moral” base.

14.) Bullshit – Blue Button
15.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
16.) Fear The Government – The Wards
17.) Weapon Factory take 4 – The Wards
18.) Bernie Is A Punk – BERN UNIT
19.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday

That song is such a lovely look at life when Bernie was Mayor of Burlington. He would make a decent President. Nice reworking of the Ramones song by the band from California. I though a double shot of Wards would be nice. I don’t think we need to fear the government but we do need to elect decent caring people, which we often do not do for odd reasons. Nice rockers from Doubtfire and Button. OK, here’s a brand new punk song.

20.) A Song About Riding Bikes Adrienne Cooper Smith
21.) Awake To Steak – Black Hairy Tongue
22.) Six O’ Clock – The Wards
23.) Decide – Dave Jarvis Band
24.) Prime – Black Rabbit

Great rocker from Rabbit. That’s not even on one of their albums yet. Classic ’90’s rocker from Dave. Nice punk from the ’80’s with the Wards. BHT straddled that line between the ’80’s and ’90’s. Adrienne is out rocking us today. This next band is doing the same.

25.) This Town – Suburban Samurai
26.) An Obscene Amount Of Debt – Sink or Swim
27.) United States – The Wards
28.) We Need Bigger Knives – As We Were
29.) Bury Me Easy – Real Talk

Cool song from their new album. Were played around in the early 2010’s. American Imperialism was in full force in the ’80’s as the Wards so nicely point out. Sink and Suburban are out and about rocking us hard. This next band is doing the same.

30.) Warmonger – Smokestack Lightning
31.) Gettin’ High – Heavy Plains
32.) Bit O Honey – Happy Spangler
33.) Magic In This Mystery – Robin Gottfried Band

Robin and his band will be at On Tap Bar & Grill on Saturday. Fun song from Spangler. Great rockers from Heavy and Smokestack. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song before: Red Rain – Peter Gabriel

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. Last week was a bit crazy in the political world but this week has seem a bit more calmness. All around people are being wonderful and building networks of love and planting seeds to help the future blossom. Let’s begin with a song about that.

1.) Seed Of Healing – That Virginia
2.) Young Girl – Clare Byrne: Song and Dance
3.) Mama – Ivamae
4.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith

Great song from Maryse who used to play in town all the time but still stops by to enchant us. Ivamae’s songs are so beautiful. I have to go see her again soon. I wanted to go back to Clare’s ep after playing a song a couple of weeks ago. What a great song. I’ve really got to get to know That Virginia. Thanks Jennifer Grossi for sending me her music. OK, let’s head on over to Robot Dog Studio for another edition of WBKM Live At Robot Dog. Tonight I interview David Rosane & The Zookeepers and they play four cool songs.

5.) Grandma – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
6.) Sugar And Cream – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
7.) Hope In The Dark – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
8.) What The Fuck Went Wrong – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

Thanks so much Jennifer, Don Sinclair, David Rosane for playing and thanks Ryan Cohen for the production and recording and to Mary Wolcott for being part of the scene. OK, let’s play the next song on Loose Tooth which is the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week.

9.) Crazy – Clever Girls
10.) Lovely Day – gneiss
11.) My Fear Of Losing You – Milton Busker
12.) Finally Found The One – When Particles Collide

Particles are a great rock band and will be at The Monkey House next Wednesday. Milton is a great songwriter and will be at Light Club Lamp Shop next Tuesday. It was nice to see gneiss for the end of their show at Red Square last night. I love Clever Girls. This next band will be at the Monkey on Wednesday with Particles.

13.) Strawberry Blonde – Dino Bravo VT
14.) Bridge To Panda Chaos – Zeus Springsteen
15.) Here We Go – Dysfunkshun
16.) New Age Woman – Pinhead

Classic song from Pinhead who helped shape the wide dynamic of music that we now have in town. Dys will get back together for a show soon. Zeus will rock Montpelier this Saturday. Great song from Dino. Last Monday I went to Nectar’s and saw these next three bands.

17.) Good Times – Grand
18.) We Govern The Breeze – Humble Hero
19.) I Choo-Choo-Choose You – Mr. Doubtfire
20.) Another Day Closer To Nothing – Grand

I had to play two Grand songs because they are so short and so great. Great song from Doubt. It was great to get to know Hero and they rocked that song hard Monday night. OK, let’s keep rocking.

21.) Commune – Greaseface
22.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
23.) One Thousand Lies – Comrade Nixon
24.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service

Doom always put on great rocking shows. They will be at Finnegan’s on Saturday. Comrade are from NY and just put out a really intense album. Hen are playing Friday at 11:30 at Radio Bean I will likely miss the show since I have to work early in the morning and be responsible but have a feeling I will catch up with them soon. Grease are at Jim’s basement tonight. I saw them once and liked them and will catch up with them again. OK, let’s keep rocking.

25.) Drug Laws – SWALE
26.) Bernie Is A Punk – BERN Unit
27.) Game Of Thrones – The Mountain Says No
28.) Sober – Vedora

I miss Vedora but they put on some rocking shows and left us with some great music. Sunday is the last episode of this season’s Game Of Thrones so I thought I should get the Mountain song on now. It was cool that the California rockers who make up BERN rearranged the Ramones song to be about Bernie. Hmm Swale. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM runs from 9-11pm US Eastern time and will go as follows:

Song before: New Americana – Halsey

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I have been so inspired by Bernie’s valiant run for President. No matter what happens next, he has gotten his message out to the people in staggering ways. He has inspired people in ways that we will not understand for years, but we do have some music that has been inspired by his highest ideals. Let’s begin tonight with some of those.

1.) Bernie Is A Punk – BERN UNIT
2.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
3.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 Vt Musicians

His message is so wonderfully inspiring and I’m glad he has the chance to spread it to so many people. OK, here is the last song on Callisto. I will have to pick a new album to play all the way through next week.

4.) Skydiving – Alpenglow
5.) Violet – Sneakers Jazz Band – Live at White Crow
6.) Rocket – Soule Monde I Burlington, VT

Soule will play around at Jazzfest. I had to play Violet since the Sneakers band are so great. What a lovely way to end the Callisto album. OK, Soule are also playing a few shows with Josh Weinstein and Bob Wagner at Nectar’s as Soule Indomitable so let’s play a Kat Wright song.

7.) Let’s Move – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
8.) Aerosol Ball – The Felice Brothers
9.) Zigzagging Toward The Light – Conor Oberst

I really enjoyed the Connor show with the Felice Brothers at Higher Ground last Tuesday and wanted to play some of their music. Great song by Kat and the band. On Monday I got to see a cool band called Silver Bridget. I don’t have any of their music to play but they did a great version of this next song. This next song is a cover of a classic as performed by a band who will play the top of the block on Church St on Friday Night.

10.) Starman – Madaila
11.) See Me On My Way – Superhuman Happiness
12.) Rise – Barika
13.) ComeTooLate – Paper Castles

Castles played a new bar called Side Bar on Wednesday. I should check that place out soon. Barika and Superhuman will be playing around this weekend. Great cover from Madaila. This next band played at Higher Ground last Sunday.

14.) Could You be The One? – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
15.) Chopped And Channeled – Barbacoa
16.) The Big One – The High Breaks
17.) Carnage – Black Rabbit

I’m psyched to see Rabbit on Saturday at Four Quarters Brewery in Winooski. The Breaks will play in Nectar’s garage window on Saturday and on Church St on Sunday. Barbacoa are playing at The Skinny Pancake on Saturday. This next band will feature some bass playing at Manhattan Pizza and Pub on Saturday.

18.) Local Lore – Savage Hen
19.) No Way – Phantom Suns
20.) Fight – When Particles Collide
21.) Blind Pigs – ROUGH FRANCIS

I got to chat with Urian Hackney who said the new Francis album should be out around Labor Day. Woo hoo!! Great new song from Particles. Phantom played The Monkey House on Wednesday. This next song is a personal favorite.

22.) Iron And Metal – The Mountain Says No
23.) Roll Me – The Cush
24.) The Perfect Map – Elephants of Scotland
25.) Be A Good Citizen – Pinhead

I thought I’d end where I began by speaking about citizenship. Great new song from Elephants. I love that song by The Cush. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? See Ya. Ta Ta. Goodbye

26.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit

For tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM and WBKM.ORG I had expected to highlight some of the great music that happened last week and highlight some of the great music happening this week, then add in a fun set or two, but this coming week’s and last week’s music filled the two hours very quickly!

Song before: Bernie Is A Punk – Bern Unit

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington.  So much great music happened in town last week and there is a ton of great stuff happening this week too.  Let’s see how much I can highlight.  Last night I went to Radio Bean to see what Caroline O’Connor is up to.  She played some really cool songs.  Let’s begin tonight with a song from her previous band.

1.) Basalt Anchor – Caroline O’Connor

2.) I Know It’s True – Wide Wail

3.) Highway – Construction Joe

4.) 2,000 – The Pants

I had a good time seeing so many great performers at the Pants music highlight show at Higher Ground last Saturday.  They closed the night with 2,000 and had everyone on stage and it was so cool.  Also, at the Pants show, Swale was the house band so they did a killer set of Wide Wail songs, and Construction Joe got back together to play a set.  I thought I’d play the songs in the previous set to give you an idea of what the night sounded like.  OK, now it’s time to play the next song on the Bernie Sanders album that I am working my way through, one song per week until the album is done.  I was so happy that he won three more states last week.  This is the last song on the album that he recorded here in Vermont many years ago.

5.) We Shall Overcome – Bernie Sanders and 30 VT Artists

6.) This Machine – Invisible Homes

7.) Symptom Of The Universe – Surf Sabbath

Last Friday I wandered down to The Skinny Pancake and saw Homes play a killer set.  They closed with Machine. I then walked over to Juniper at Hotel Vermont and caught the High Breaks.  They tossed in a couple of their Sabbath covers including Symptom.  OK, so that was some of what happened last week.  Surf Sabbath will be playing at Metal Monday on April 4th, so that is coming up this week.  There is a ton of other great music happening this week. The sad thing is that I will miss all of it.  Tomorrow night my brother Ken and I will head to Montreal to see Iron Maiden.  If you will indulge me, I will start off this set with the title song from their new album and a song I will hear tomorrow night.

8.) Book Of Sours – Iron Maiden

9.) Angry Inch – Hedwig and the Angry Inch cast recording

10.) Ornan’s Song – The Dirty Blondes

11.) East.Jibab – REDadmiral

If I wasn’t at Maiden on April 1st I’d love to be at the Switchback Brewery seeing Admiral.  If I wasn’t at Maiden on April 1st I’d love to be at Art’s Riot seeing the stage production of Hedwig, featuring Ornan on drums, and staying for the Dirty Blondes who are playing after.  It’s going to be hard to miss the Blondes, but hey, Maiden.  Another band that I really enjoy, the Wee Folkestra, are playing at the Skinny Pancake on April 1st.  They are a collective of cool people, some of whom are in the following bands.

12.) Spit-n-Fire Blues (live at Nectar’s) – Joe Adler and the Rangers of Danger

13.) This Is Our Good Night – Aya Inoue

14.) Super Sexy Science Party (live at Nectar’s) – Wave Of The Future

Samara Lark Brown from Wave is part of the Folkestra.  So are Aya and Joe.  I’d love to be at the show, if I wasn’t at Maiden.  There is likely lots of other music happening in town on April 1st too, but let’s move on to April 2.  This next band are most of Wave and they are playing at Drink.

15.) Art Of Vandalay – Sad Turtle

16.) Barstools – Abbie Morin

17.) Los Muertos – Eastern Mountain Time

Actually, Eastern are playing on April 1st too.  They are over at Radio Bean.  Abbie is playing at the Skinny Pancake on April 2.  These next two artists are playing at Radio Bean on April 3rd.

18.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara

19.) Matter Of Time – Eric George

20.) Lithuania – Hana Zara

I just love the imagery of Hana’s songs.  She and Eric are playing some shows together around the Midwest very soon.  I was thrilled when I looked in the listings and saw that they are playing Sunday night at Radio Bean.  I love when I get to listen to Hana.  Well, I’m almost out of time, but I did want to give a shout out to Swale for their tremendous musicianship at the Pants show last Saturday.  Let’s play a couple of their songs to take us out.

21.) Overcoat – Swale

22.) Popular Crowd – Swale

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town.  Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Song after: Vigil – Fish

As always, I want to thank everyone who made tonight’s show possible. Thanks to: BERN UNIT, Vedora, Caroline Marie, Jane Boxall Percussion, Amanda Gustafson, Jeremy Frederick, Tom Lawson, Bernie Sanders, Invisible Homes, Sean Witters, The High Breaks, Todd Gevry, Kevin Lynam, Matthew Bryan Hagen, Iron Maiden, Robert Fuller, The Dirty Blondes, Rebecca Rogers, Diane Sullivan, Ornan McLean, Chris Clark, REDadmiral, Gordon Glover, John Billingsley, Joe Adler, Aya Inoue, Samara Lark Brown, Luke Richer, Jake Styles, Jeremy Gartner, Sad Turtle, Abbie Morin, Abbie Gail, Thomas Pearo, Eastern Mountain Time, Sean Hood, Hana Zara, Eric George, Eric George, SWALE, Tyler Bolles, Eric Olsen, Fish, and everyone else!!

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Former Mayor of Burlington, Bernie Sanders, did pretty well by winning four states on Super Tuesday. It’s so inspiring to see him doing so well in his run for the US Presidency. He is that rare politician who lays our specific plans to make life easier for Americans, so it’s inspiring to hear him speak, but is really inspiring because of his record of accomplishment. He has inspired a lot of citizens and artists and musicians. Here is some music inspired by Bernie Sanders.

1.) I Saw Bernie Sanders At Al’s French Fries – Patrick Heltz
2.) This Land Is Your Land – VT Artists
3.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
4.) Bernie Is A Punk – Bern Unit

Nice reworking of the Ramones Judy Is A Punk by the California band. Violint is a woman named Emma Sky who used to live in town. I love the references to knowing Bernie personally and the humable Feel The Bern chorus. Lovely song from Kat Wright, Bob Wagner, and the rest of the crew. It was great seeing lots of those musicians on stage with Bernie in Essex on Tuesday night. Great song from Patrick about seeing Bernie about town. Bernie and Al’s are two Burlington classics. Last week I finished the last song from the Black Rabbit album Red Flannel Hash. It’s time to start a new album to play song after song, week after week, until it’s done. Of course, it will be the album that Bernie Sanders recorded back in the 80’s with 30 Vermont musicians.

5.) Oh, Freedom – Bernie Sanders and 30 VT Musicians
6.) It’s Just A Ride – Bill Hicks
7.) Freeway – David Rosane and the Zookeepers
8.) If I Knew – Binger

I love the vitality of the lyric in the Binger song. The whole set was about people getting along and working together to make a great world. Freeway has that feel, and is a good rocking song. Bill was a preacher on par with none, and one of the funniest people who ever walked the planet. Yea Bernie. So, something cool happened this week. Alpenglow released their first full length album.

9.) Been So Long – Alpenglow
10.) Northern Skies – The Lindbergh Baby
11.) The Blackout – The Static Age
12.) Stop – REDadmiral

Great fun rocker from Admiral. I love the sound and flow of the Static song. I used to work with Scott Broderick and love that song from his band. Hmmm, Alpenglow. So, I saw a cool show last week at the Rusty Nail in Stowe. They ran a school bus from Nectar’s to the show, so I took the ride and saw Dark Side of the Mountain play a stunning Pink Floyd tribute show. This was the encore.

13.) Echoes->Comfortably Numb->Echoes

Because, if you are going to play a 23 minute song for your encore, why not throw in another 7 minute one in the drifty section in the middle. Stunning show. This next artist has been playing her well crafted songs all around.

14.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
15.) Poem For Torin/Ethan Is Stoned – Peg Tassey
16.) No Countries – And The Kids
17.) Popular Crowd – Swale

Great rocker from the great band. Kids have been playing a ton of shows all over lately. Go see them if you ever get a chance. That is such an epic song from Peg. Sadly, she just lost her mom. My heart goes out to you Peg! This next band played Metal Mondays last year and blew me away. They came back this Monday and played another great show.

18.) Crystal King – Holy Grail
19.) A Different Machine (live) – Elephants Of Scotland

Killer song from the local prog band who occasionally plays Metal Mondays too. Grail rocked last Monday! I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Good bye. See Ya. Ciao.

20.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit
