Song before Shine – Stoneman Douglas Drama Club

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Please join me on a ride through some deep cuts from Burlington’s past to music that was released this week. Let’s start a decade ago with an amazing song.

1.) Bad Oasis – farm
2.) Cancer – SWALE
3.) On Backstreets – Eastern Mountain Time
4.) Small Town Movie – The Cush

Movie is one of those songs that everyone always loves when they play live. Cool new song from Eastern who are at Zenbarn tonight. Cancer is from Swale’s first EP Verdigris. I want to send that out to everyone who is dealing with cancer, whether it’s you, your family or a loved one. Keep up the fight and make sure you have lots of friends to help. I love that Farm song. OK, here is the next song on Black, Blue & White.

5.) Bird On The Sea – The New Siberians
6.) Judgment Day – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
7.) Honest Will – The Parts
8.) Cemetery Walks – Ryan Ober and The Romans

Great new song from his Caveman Blues album. It was great to chat with Ryan last Monday at the Maryse Smith show. Cool new song from Danny LeFrancois and the band. I’ve played Judgment before but this is the brand new final mix from the upcoming Book Of Zoo album. Such a fantastic song from the Siberians. So, I made it out to the three Monday residency shows that Maryse has done at Light Club Lamp Shop this month. There is another opportunity next Monday. She’s played a lot of cool songs but maybe not this one.

9.) Glory Bound – Maryse Smith
10.) Luminous – Michael Chorney and Hollar General
11.) Kids – Wren Kitz
12.) Magic In This Mystery – Robin Gottfried Band

I love thinking about the magic and mystery in and around life. Robin and the band are playing Saturday at On Tap Bar and Grill. Wren will be at Autumn Records on Saturday. I chose Kids to honor all of the kids standing up to their schools and governments and TV personalities to try and stop the gun violence. Have it kids!! Michael joined Maryse last Monday and it was so wonderful to hear their guitars weave together, while Francesca Blanchard weaved her voice with Maryse’s. Next week should be pretty magical too. This next band are playing tonight at Red Square.

13.) Three Feels Right – gneiss
14.) Wanderer – Francesca Blanchard
15.) The Mists – Aram Bedrosian
16.) Crimescene – Dino Bravo VT

That’s a cool newer song from Dino that was recorded at our Robot Dog Studio session last year. Great work as always from Aram. Francesca is playing Sunday at Higher Ground. Great song from Gneiss from a Robot Dog session last year too. This next singer moved away but comes back now and then.

17.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass
18.) Your Downtown Aperture – Video Pigeon
19.) Bob Marley And The Hartford Whalers – The Zambonis
20.) Green Apple Girl – Cranial Perch

Perch played lovely chaotic music in the ’90’s. Zambonis played songs about hockey in the ’90’s. Pigeon had that super cool kind of mysterious sound in the ’90s’. I love the power of Hero. Here’s another band from the ’90’s.

21.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy
22.) Tastes Like Nothing – Zola Turn
23.) Golgi Apparatus – The Pants
24.) High Water Mark – Belizbeha

Belizbeha played acid jazz in the ’90’s. That’s a cover of a Pants song. That’s the Pants covering Phish. Zola always rocked. Great song from Starlight. Let’s play another song about the power of water.

25.)The Sea Is powerful – Wide Wail
26.) Daydreaming – Thanya Iyer
27.) Ships – Anais Mitchell

Such a powerful song from Anais. Thanya are from Montreal but stopped by the Lamp Shop on Tuesday and played a great show. Wail were so great in the ’90’s. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show on WBKM.ORG will run from 9-11pm US Eastern Time Thursday January 4th. It can be streamed from our website or here: WBKM It will go as follows.

Song before: A Dark Light – Aram Bedrosian

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. It’s winter time and the cold and snow are here. We just cruised past New Year’s Day and are diving into 2018. Let’s fill it with art and compassion and music. Let’s begin with an artist who just released a new song for the new year.

1.) Maria – Francesca Blanchard
2.) Mama – Ivamae
3.) Stormy Day – Robin Gottfried
4.) Cascade – Andriana Chobot

Andriana played a lovely show last Friday at Radio Bean and closed with that one. 5.) Lead Me To Your Love – The New Siberians
6.) Raise Your Head – Gang of Thieves
7.) Happy New Year – Ninja Custodian
8.) Safe To Say – SWALE

I spent New Year’s Eve at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and Swale put on a wonderful show. Thieves closed the night by rocking hard. Great songs from Ninja and the Siberians. So, last night was a new episode of The X-Files and this song has been running though my head all week.

9.) The Invixibles – Black Rabbit
10.) You Will Fall – Kelly Ravin
11.) Boys Club – Peg Tassey MUSIC
12.) Dragged Around The Universe – Queen Tangerine

QT were Alice and Julia Austin‘s band after Zola Turn. They worked with Jeff Moxley who is now working with Peg to produce the upcoming album from Miriam Bernardo. I wanted to play the Peg song to remind us all that abuse of and predatory behavior are not just issues that effect large companies but also exist in our community. The local punk community is currently struggling to figure out the best way to deal with this and it’s great that they are trying. You want to encourage people who behave badly to improve but at what point will someone not change and you just have to cut ties. It’s a challenge that will hopefully create new spaces of acceptance and power for women. OK, great songs from Kelly and Rabbit. I saw Rabbit last Saturday with this next band.

13.) The Art Of Vandalay – Sad Turtle
14.) Better Half – Abbie Morin
15.) The Meanest Thing I’ll Ever Write – Milton Busker
16.) Pauses – Lowell Thompson and Crown Pilot

That’s Lowell with Bill Mullins, Kirk Flanagan, and Steve Hadeka and it’s such a cool song. Great song from Milton. He played a great version of it last week at Light Club Lamp Shop with his band The Grim Work. Great song from Abbie who is now in the band Hammydown. Turtle are so cool. OK, I’ve been watching X-Files and just got the new Twin Peaks so let’s play this song.

I’m heading to the Flynn tonight with my brother to see Lyric Theater do Tommy so I had to record tonight’s local music radio show earlier today. It will broadcast on 107.1FM on both sides of the Champlain Valley. You can also stream it from the WBKM Facebook page. It will run from 9-11pm US Eastern Time tonight, November 10, 2016. It will go as follows:

Song before: Anytime – jane siberry

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. I want to begin by thanking Higher Ground for sponsoring our station. They have lots of cool shows happening this week. Well, election night has come and gone and many of us are worried about the results. It was nice to sit down and read so many comments on Facebook today. There are a lot of wonderful smart caring compassionate people in our community who can express positive hopes and dreams of working and being together even though we are worried and uncertain. Your staggering optimism buoys me. Let’s begin with a song about looking towards the positive things in life.

1.) The Light – Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band
2.) If You Get Lost – SWALE
3.) Fades To Grey – Aram Bedrosian
4.) Brothers And Sisters – Joe Adler

That is such a huge and gorgeous song. I wanted to play it because we can all use a huge amount of beauty in our world. I want to send that out to my brother Ken. That’s a new song from the staggeringly talented Aram. I played Lost for the same reason I played Brothers. Such a great new song from Kat Wright featuring some fantastic guitar work from Bob Wagner. Here is the next song from Song For My Double.

5.) One On The Skyline – Invisible Homes
6.) Not I – Andriana Chobot
7.) Amazing Journey/Sparks (live at Leeds) – The Who
8.) See Me Feel Me/Listening To You – The Who

Lyric Theater is doing Tommy this weekend so I wanted to play a couple of the lovely Who songs. With Andriana and Marie Claire Johnson in the band, it’s going to be great. Cool song from Homes. Here is a song from when Marie sang and played rock guitar.

9.) Trading Bullets – Fire The Cannons
10.) Two Weeks (’til The End Of The World) – Grand
11.) There’s A Problem – Mr. Doubtfire
12.) Monsters Are Due – Doom Service

Doom and Doubt are playing Saturday at The Monkey House where Doubt will release their new EP. Doubt are also playing tonight at Jim’s Basement with Grand. FTC were so great. I went out to Nectar’s to watch the election results Tuesday and saw all of these bands.

13.) Windigo – Crazyhearse
14.) Old North Ender – James Kochalka
15.) Chuck Berry – Dino Bravo VT
16.) Ornan – Dirty Blondes

Everyone played great sets and rocked hard at the show. Most of those songs were played. Last weekend was the Radio Bean birthday and I saw these bands and many more.

17.) Flight Of The Alligator – Cave Bees
18.) Waiting For You – Swale
19.) Lowdown – Vedora
20.) Old Man – Silver Bridget

Bridget sounded so sweet. Vedora did not play but Caroline Marie fronts them and her solo set sounded kind of like that. Swale and Bees played those songs. Speaking of Birthdays, tomorrow is our birthday at WBKM.ORG and we are throwing a party at Nectar’s. We will have The Joe Moore band, Castle Creek, and Seth Yacovone will play a set of Dylan songs with the band calling themselves The Jokerman. Since many local artists play this song, I think it’s appropriate to play.

21.) One More Cup Of Coffee (Valley Below) – Bob Dylan
22.) Cowgirl In The Sand – Seth Yacovne and friends calling themselves Real Old & Insane Doneky

That was from a previous WBKM birthday party. Seth always rocks so it’s going to be a good time. This next song has been on my mind lately.

23.) Last American Right – The Cush
24.) Last Night – Carraway
25.) Children Of The Stars – Madaila

I’ve been listening to their new album Traces and loving that song. I’m pretty pleased with that new Carraway song too. Hmmm, the Cush. Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Farewell.

WBKM CREW

WBKM CREW

http://wbkm.org/

I just got back from doing my local music radio show on internet only Wbkm Dot Org, and seeing Dino Bravo at Club Metronome, I played a bunch of really new music and a few very old songs.

Song before: When I Was New – Sarah Blacker

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. It’s a beautiful night in Burlington I went 20 days without seeing any live music, due to an odd series of unfortunate circumstances, but finally made it out to Radio Bean last Monday to see The Nancy Druids. They are very new so I don’t have any of their music, but if you listen to the first two songs, you can get an idea. This is Today Is Tomorrow by The Red Telephone on WBKM, and this is Burlington’s Kind Of Music.

1.)Today Is Tomorrow – The Red Telephone
2.) Still Life Scene – Envy
3.) Restaurant – The Mountain Says No
4.) Original Original – Black Rabbit

Great new song from Rabbit! They got the mighty Jane Boxall Percussion to play drums on their new album and recorded 11 songs. It will be called Red Flannel Hash and should come out on June 23rd. I’m so psyched, though I”m quite sad that Jane has left for Nashville. Come back any time!! We’ll miss you. Killer new song from Mountain. I can’t wait until they release their album! Did I mention that I loved the Nancy Druids and can’t wait to get to know their songs!. OK, let’s keep rocking through the Swale album The Next Instead.

5.) Jack Sharp – Swale
6.) Burn It Down Bernadette – Phil Yates & The Affiliates
7.) Fades To Grey – Aram Bedrosian
8.) Breakout – Sarah Blacker

Killer new song from Sarah’s album In Waves which came out Monday or Tuesday or so. She will be at the Skinny Pancake tomorrow at 7. I work until 7 but will head down as quick as I can to see how much I can see. There are some really nice songs on her new album and she sings the heck out of them! Killer new all bass only song from Aram. Love the Phil song. So, I think I want to head to the Pancake tomorrow to see Sarah then will head back to the Bean to see Rough Francis! How cool is that.

9.) MSP2 – ROUGH FRANCIS
10.) Sugar Coated Candy Stix – Dino Bravo VT
11.) Womb With A View – Heavy Plains
12.) Where Is My Mind? – The Pixies

The Pixies are in town tonight at The Flynn Theatre. I think almost everyone I know is going, but I’m here to do this show for you. Plains are on the top of my list of bands I have not seen that I really need to check out! The played Saturday with Vedora, but it was one of those bad timing missing shows things. Soon. Dino are playing at Metronome around 10:30 so I may head over after this show. OK, I’m going to play some classic old school Burlington music, but to take us there, this is the Vacant Lots.

13.) 6Am – THE VACANT LOTS
14.) Amazon – Kilimanjaro
15.) South Wind – Gordon Stone
16.) Hot Water – Pine Island

Since Pine Island are named in my intro it’s about time I played them. Nice song from Gordon. I remember seeing Kilimanjaro a long time ago and loving how smooth and elegant that they always were. I saw this guy recently when he opened for April Wine a couple of times at Higher Ground.

17.) Axe To Grind – Nobby Reed
18.) Another Round – The Eames Brothers
19.) Gothic Bloodsucker – Zola Turn
20.) Giant Mosquitoes – Cold Sweat

Sweat used to play Texas, which became Club Toast, KD Churchills, and others. I think it’s the Zen Lounge now and I think they do music again. It’s the beginning of mosquito season so I had to play the sweat song and the Zola song. Killer stuff by Nobby and Eames. Here’s another song from Sarah’s new album

21.) This Melody – Sarah Blacker
22.) Better Half – Abbie Morin
23.) The Cure (live) – Thompson Gunner
24.) Decide – David L. Jarvis

It was great to run into Dave at the Druids show. Thanks for the painting! Killer song from the Rutland band. Abbie will be at Nectar’s on Saturday. Hmmm, Sarah. This band just played a show that I missed on Saturday and will have a new album of songs, with Jane Boxall drumming, soon. Sob, we’ll miss you Jane!

25.) Low Down M2 – Vedora
26.) Deadly Wires – Ryan Ober
27.) Wisps and Watercolors – Sarah Blacker
28.) Extended Werewolf – farm

There’s only so much time indeed/ Yet another killer new Sarah song. Ryan is at Nectar’s on Saturday too. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?
