I had a great time seeing music last Saturday at The Monkey House. Christopher Larrow had come over for the weekend and we met up with Rich Haskell and headed to Winooski. We met up with Chris Rielly and Robin Chesebro Rielly and chatted for a bit. As the music began I headed to the front as Clever Girls shouted 1 2 3 4 and lit into Loose Tooth. They played a loud rocking set full of newer songs and classics. Their sound was full and rich and the volume was loud. Newer songs like Hannah just soared and classics like 45 had a slow burn that flowed into ripping guitar work. They closed with an intense rocker and I was in a happy place.

I hung out with everyone for a bit then the stage got loud and I returned. sleeping in had a lush indie rock sound. I did not know most of the songs but they were heavy and dreamy and I was in a happy place. They played some glorious music and wrapped the set with Tonight Tonight from Smashing Pumpkins.

I hung out with everyone for a bit then the stage got loud as Apartment 3 began their final show. Their indie punk sound was pretty cool and rocked hard. Again, I was not overly familiar with their songs, and the sound was loud and the vocals buried a bit so it was hard to be certain which songs they played. They were all fun and the epic 21 song set was fantastic, and included a couple of Pavement covers. They closed the night with the last song from their album Paying It Forward and that was that.

By this point everyone else had taken off so I took the lovely long walk home. I’m so glad I got to see such powerful music.

Song before: Cover Me – Bruce Springsteen

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. I hope everyone had a nice Halloween and tomorrow is my mother’s birthday so Happy Birthday Mom! Let’s begin with a local musician who just released an album called Other Side Of The Rain.

1.) Magic In This Mystery – Robin Gottfried
2.) Movin’ Out At The End Of The Night – Ben Slotnick
3.) Alone In The Night – Andriana Chobot
4.) Scattered Birds – Aaron Flinn

I just love that song by Aaron. He is talented and wonderful and writes such lovely songs. The Andriana song is inspired by the shortening days and lengthening nights. I want to thank Ben and Robin for getting in touch and letting me know about their new music so I can play it for you. Great stuff. OK, last night I went to Phoenix Books Essex & Burlington and saw performances by Swale and Mark Daly, but the main event was Ray Padgett and Brent Hallenbeck talking about Ray’s new book about cover songs. It’s called Cover Me and it was fascinating to hear stories of why rock bands choose to cover other bands songs. This next set was inspired by that discussion.

5.) She’s Leaving Home – Silver Bridget
6.) Sitting Still – Ninja Custodian
7.) Dizzy – Peg Tassey MUSIC
8.) The Revenge Of Vera Gemini – The Contrarian
9.) Elanor Rigby – Screaming Broccoli

Broccoli played in the late ’80’s and did a great rocking version of the classic. Casey Merlin Rae also records as The Contrarian and put out a whole EP of Blue Oyster Cult songs in honor of Sandy Pearlman. Ray mentioned Dizzy as one of the great local cover songs so I had to include that one. Ninja began with a few really cool originals but always played lots of covers to fill out long sets at Nectar’s like that REM song. Bridget play all covers but in their own wonderful way. OK, let’s play the next song on the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. It’s a cover too.

10.) Into The Void – Surf Sabbath (The High Breaks)
11.) Resurrection – Death World Wide
12.) Above The Frequency – Invisible Homes
13.) Future Shock – Ruckzuck

I recently came up with the idea of putting Frequency and Shock back to back so I hope you enjoyed that. The version of Shock was from the Robot Dog Studio studio session they did when they were in town in October. Great song by Death. Nice surf version of the Sabbath song. Ryan Cohen has been releasing the Live At Robot Dog performances and interviews as a podcast. He just released the one from Clever Girls. Here is a song from that session. They played a rocking version of it last Saturday at The Monkey House.

14.) 45 – Clever Girls
15.) Big Starr – sleeping in
16.) Paying It Forward – Apartment 3
17.) Electric Trim – Lee Ranaldo

Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo played an amazing show at ArtsRiot last night. That is the title song from his new album. Girls, Sleeping, and Apartment played a great show last week at the Monkey House. That was Apartment 3’s last show. Thanks for the music. Speaking about being thankful for the music, Swale opened the show for Ranaldo with this song.

18.) Felon – SWALE
19.) She Moves In Passages – Late Night Sneaky Uncle
20.) Skeleton Star – The Cush
21.) Uncle Skeleton – Lee Ranaldo

Lee played a super fun version of that song last night. It’s just a couple of days after Halloween so I had to play a couple of skeleton songs. I caught Uncle a few weeks back and it’s about time I got some of their music on the air. Anne-Marie has such a wonderful voice. So does Amanda Gustafson! OK, let’s play one more Lee song.

22.) Moroccan Mountains – Lee Ranaldo
23.) The Light – Kat Wright
24.) I’ve Been Down – Bob Wagner
25.) Ricky The Rider – The Mountain Says No

OK, it’s time to start rocking hard and what better way to start than with Ricky. Great cover song from the amazing Bob Wagner. I love that Kat song. The Lee set last night was just stunning. OK, crank up the volume to 11.

26.) Jackbooted Thugs (Have All The Best Drugs) – Anders Parker
27.) Drug Laws – Swale
28.) Mr Reed (live) – Seth Yacovone Band

All of those songs rock so hard! Thanks everyone. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

29.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit
outro

Question – Fish
Small Town Bringdown – The Tragically Hip

Song Before: Red – King Crimson

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds of Burlington. There is a ton of great music happening this week and it’s almost all on Saturday. Let’s begin with a band who are a local treasure.

1.) Cancer – SWALE
2.) Mother’s OK – Split Tongue Crow
3.) As Glass – Wren Kitz
4.) Jessie – Danny LeFrancois

I saw Danny a couple of weeks ago play with The Parts at Manhattan. They opened with that song. He just sent me his solo album The Ghost Of Kevin Bacon and that one jumped out at me. Wren is another local treasure. Great song from Crow and gorgeous song by Swale. I want to take a moment to say how professional our local doctors are and to give a shout out to all the wonderful nurses in our town and all around our planet. You are amazing and do wonderful work. OK, let’s play the final song on Shovel Down, even though it’s not listed on the album.

5.) Just Open The Door – Seth Yacovone Band
6.) Winter Is Over – Apartment 3
7.) These Summer Nights – Sarah Blacker & New England Groove Association
8.) Brainwashed Nation – The Snaz

I think the Snaz have a new album but I have not checked it out yet. That’s an older classic. I love to play the Sarah song in the middle of winter and dream of summer. Apartment 3 are releasing their new album Saturday night at ArtsRiot. Great song from Seth. I’ll have to start a new album next week. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring WBKM.ORG. The Snaz will play there Saturday and open for this next artist.

9.) I Can’t See the Light – Marco Benevento
10.) Follow The Arrow – Marco Benevento
11.) Worlds Are Colliding (George Is Getting Upset) – Sad Turtle
12.) The Big One – The High Breaks

The High Breaks will bring their surf rock sound to Finnegan’s on Saturday and Turtle will open for them. Marco is just going to rock Higher Ground on Saturday. Also on Saturday, The Nancy Druids will rock The Monkey House. Sean Toohey and Ann Mindell used to play in Envy and Sean used to play in this next band so their show will sound a little like these next two songs.

13.) Jet Pilot High – The Red Telephone
14.) Falling In And Out Of Sleep – Envy
15.) Nothing In This – The Mountain Says No
16.) Give Love – 1881

That’s another great song from their Action EP. Mountain will release their new album Golden Landfill soon. Classics from Envy and Red Telephone. Last weekend was fun, I got to see Joe Adler and Binger Friday and Jeremy Gilchrist and Joe Adler on Saturday. It sounded a bit like this.

17.) Relax – Joe Adler
18.) Resurrection In Sanskrit I – Binger
19.) If I Knew – Binger
20.) Letter From The 21st – Jeremy Gilchrist – Singer-Songwriter

Jeremy did not play that song, but it’s one of my favorites so I had to play it for you tonight. Binger played Resurrection and If back to back and made them sound great. Joe played a great version of Relax. OK, let’s pull out a fun song from the ’90’s.

21.) On My Way – Hover
22.) Way With Words – Kat Wright
23.) Sally – Daniel Waterhouse
24.) Happy Birthday Harry – Hana Zara

I love that song from Hana, and everything else that she does. Cool song from Daniel. Great song from Kat and the band. Hover were so much fun. OK, let’s play another song from Golden Landfill.

25.) Game Of Thrones – The Mountain Says No
26.) Waiting – Mr. Doubtfire

Great song from Siberians. Doubtfire have been rocking our town a lot lately and are writing lots of new songs. Hmmm, Mountain. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

intro

From our – hey why are the meters not showing anything. Aargh

1.) Beach Song – Mr. Ray Fork

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Sorry for the mic not working at the beginning. I guess you really know that I’m live. It’s beautiful in Vermont right now but it’s really hot and time to head to the beach.

2.) I Wanna Be A Lifeguard – Blotto
3.) The Storm Has Been Weathered – 1881
4.) Say It – Anachronist

I just love that song from the central Vermont band. I chatted with Winfield Holt from 1881 in the window of the show at Nectar’s last night and really want to catch his band soon. I remember seeing Blotto at Hunt’s a couple of times a long time ago. OK, here is the next song on Giant Places, the album I am playing through song by song, week after week, until the album is done.

5.) Summer Falls – Lendway
6.) Gray Goo – Villanelles
7.) Sunshine – Apartment 3
8.) Kick Rocks – And The Kids

Kids played a great show at ArtsRiot last Saturday. Apartment 3 played the show and they were pretty awesome too. Villanelles are playing every Wednesday in July at Nectar’s. They played a great show last night with Invisible Homes. Next week Swale share the bill, so that will be great too. On July 28th the legendary Envy will reunite for a show at The Monkey House. It’s time to start getting excited.

9.) Falling In And Out Of Sleep – Envy
10.) Summer Song – Wide Wail
11.) Grounded – Invisible Jet
12.) Another Life Ago – The Cush

I still remember the first night I saw the Cush at Club Metronome several years ago. Jet played some great shows in the ’90’s and it was great to hear music diversify in so many ways. Now, you can hear almost any kind of music in Burlington. That was a nice mellow song from WW, another classic ’90’s band. OK, let’s keep rocking. This next band play tomorrow night at Manhattan Pizza and Pub.

13.) Restaurant – The Mountain Says No
14.) Politicians In My Eyes – Death World Wide
15.) It’s Real Again – Zola Turn
16.) Dead Summer – Thompson Gunner

There’s always something on the radio when you listen to WBKM. You can hear great songs like Dead Summer. Real is another classic from the ’90’s when Zola played a ton of great shows. Death began in Detroit, then they moved to VT and became Lambsbread and now they are rocking as Death again. I loved the show they played at Flynn Center for the Performing Arts last year. Hmmm, Mountain. This next band played a great show last night at Nectar’s and this is one of my favorite songs.

17.) Above The Frequency – Invisible Homes
18.) Sun Dipped Orphans and the Wizard’s Tea Pot – Elephants of Scotland
19.) The Summer Of Andy – Cancer Conspiracy

CC were another great band from the ’90’s. That’s a new song from Elephants who are putting out some tremendous music. Homes did a great version of Frequency last night. OK, let’s change things up a little bit.

20.) Complex Vermont – Self Portrait
21.) The Feeling Is Strange – Binger
22.) Cascade – Andriana Chobot
23.) Trouble Come No More – Cricket Blue

Cricket are playing at Main St Landing tomorrow and Radio Bean next Tuesday. Both Andriana and Binger played great sets at the Eat More Kale Festival a couple of weeks ago. Nice descriptions of VT by Portrait. This next singer is touring out west soon.

24.) Save A Different Way – Francesca Blanchard
25.) Beats Me – Satori Bob
26.) Glover Tonight – Chin Ho

Such a VT classic from Chin Ho. John Baumann used to play around as Satori but is now hanging out making music in OR. Great song from Francesca. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Apartment 3, Vundabar, And The Kids at Arts Riot July 2, 2016   Leave a comment

I had a great time seeing music last night at ArtsRiot. It was one of those classic nights where I got to check out a band I was curios to see, there was one band I knew nothing about and one band that I knew I would love. They even played in that order.

I got out of work at 7:30, stopped at home quickly, then headed out a little after 8 and arrived just before 8:30. I had enough time to get a beer an Apartment 3 hit the stage and rocked it hard. With two singer/guitar players, bass and drums they unleashed a catchy maelstrom of indie punk. Some of the songs were a little sludgy and heavy, some were were fast punk, but all of them had a nice flow and moved through their changes with ease. The only one I recognized was Winter Is Gone and they played it very well. They played a solid 40 minute set that ended with an off kilter eighties pop sounding song that evolved into a heavy rock ending. I really loved their set and will definitely check them out again soon.

Vundabar at Arts Riot July 2, 2016 pic by Tim Lewis

About 15 minutes after they left the stage, Vundabar started playing. They are a guitar/singer, bass, drums band and their songs seem to be about laying out some riffs, pausing for a bit then charging back into them. The packed audience loved them and were bouncing along and lightly moshing for their hour long show. They played a dozen songs and the audience sang along heartily on the second to last. They reminded me a bit of Ten Years After but with some more modern indie rock sounds. They put on a solid rock show that was enjoyed by all.

And The Kids at Arts Riot July 2, 2016 pic by Tim Lewis

And The Kids at Arts Riot July 2, 2016 pic by Tim Lewis

There was another short set break, then And The Kids hit the stage. If the previous band was all about riffs to get people to bounce, Kids are all about well crafted songs that are fun to dance to. They treated us to several songs off the new Friends Share Lovers album, including the title song, and played plenty of the classics. They are guitar/singer, bass, drums trio though the drummer adds backing vocals and tons of effects. The audience loved them and had a great time singing the AAA-EEE sections of Cats Were Born. Their 14 song set spanned an hour and they wrapped the night with a stellar All Day All Night.

I headed out shortly after the last song faded out and was really glad I put the effort in. We are so lucky to be able to get such lovely music in Burlington.

Tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM from 9-11pm US Eastern time will go as follows:

Song before: Russian Autumn Heart – The Church Band

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Jazzfest kicks off tomorrow in Burlington, so I’ve got a bit of jazz lined up, but the main part of the show will be to go deeper into the albums of a few bands I’ve been playing recently. It seems like I have played one song by a bunch of bands and said that I would have to check them out more. We will do that tonight. However, considering the date, I have to begin with a different song. Today is the second of June, so let’s begin with this:

1.) Last Day Of May – The Red Telephone
2.) Farside – Villanelles
3.) Sometime Next Year – 1881
4.) The Blackout – The Static Age

I love that song by Static and just have to pull it out and play now and then. Another cool song from 1881. I may have to check them out live sometime soon. Great song from Villanelles new album Blue Heart Attack, which had a great write up in Seven Days this week. Great song from Telephone. OK, here is the next song on Callisto.

5.) Flicker Flutter – Alpenglow
6.) Break – Slingshot Dakota
7.) Empty Frequency – Rue M. (Rue Mevlana)
8.) Last Love – Myra Flynn Music

Myra will kick off Jazzfest at The Skinny Pancake on Friday. I just love the energy that Rue put into a song and a show. Another gorgeous song from Slingshot. If you hadn’t noticed, I played their entire Break album song for song for the last 9 weeks. Break is the last song on the album. Flicker is the second to last song on Callisto. I will play the last one next week, then start another album the week after that. OK, it’s Jazzfest. Let’s play some jazz.

9.) NoRoomForSquares – Sneakers Jazz Band
10.) My Hero, The Enemy – Gregory Douglass
11.) Now That You Are Gone – Francesca Blanchard

Another great song from Francesca’s deux visions album. Great song from Gregory. So many great jazz players used to play at Sneakers. This next song is a great song that I do not play often enough.

12.) What’s In California? – Joshua Glass Music
13.) Who’s Fault Was That? – The Snaz
14.) Barstool Blues – Seth Yacovone Band
15.) Freeway – David Rosane & The Zookeepers

Great song from David and the band. Killer cover of the Neil Young song from Seth. The Snaz just rock. I love the Josh song. OK, Let’s play a song from Vetica from an album they put out after breaking up. This is a song from the Songs In The Key Of V album.

16.) Distance – Vetica
17.) Green Apple Girl – Dave Jarvis
18.) Blue Lights – Sink or Swim
19.) Mush – Phantom Suns

Great rocker from Phantom. I have to get out and catch them soon. Same for Sink. I love that Dave song from the ’90’s. I miss Vetica. OK, let’s let the music get a little scary for a while.

20.) Devil Knows My Name – Great Western
21.) Raising The Dead – Carraway
22.) Ninjas VS Zombies – Phil Yates

Such a fun song from Phil. Great song from Carraway. Same for Western. Here is a new song from a band I’ve been meaning to check out more.

24.) High Water Mark – The Pants

I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

Tonight’s local music radio show on 107.1FM WBKM and streaming at the WBKM Facebook page featured some highlights of the music that happened in town last week, highlighted a couple of upcoming shows and featured a bunch of new music from a cool Burlington band.

Song before: Almost With You – The Church

promo

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. Last week I made it to one of the Hedwig and the Angry Inch shows they did at ArtsRiot. I loved the show and the local band who just rocked. The show had lots of glitter and sparkle and it made me think of this classic Burlington song.

1.) It’s Purple And It Sparkles – Zola Turn
2.) Midnight Radio – Hedwig and the Angry Inch original cast recording
3.) Popular Crowd – Swale.

Swale played the Hedwig after show party and played some great songs, many of them new. I love the build in Midnight which was the ending song from Hedwig. I love Zola. OK, it’s time for the next song on Alpenglow’s album Callisto.

4.) Holiday – Alpenglow
5.) Wally Rides The Ferry – Zoot Wilson
6.) Sun In The Sky – Ninja Custodian
7.) Upstream – The New Siberians

I’m loving that new Siberians song. Brendan Devitt is in the Siberians now and was in Ninja back in the day. I want to dedicate Sun to everyone who is going through a rough time. There is always a sun in the sky and you are a valuable part of the life that keeps moving on. We’re all in it together so help your friends and let them help you when you need it. Classic song from Zoot. What a legend in Burlington. Great new song from Alpenglow that is a bit more rocking than usual for them. This week, Cricket Blue released a new EP called IO. It’s full of legendary imagery and great music.

8.) Angela Carter – Cricket Blue
9.) Eleanor – Cricket Blue
10.) Trouble Come No More – Cricket Blue
11.) Kentucky – Cricket Blue

Wow, what an EP. I just could not pick one song so I had to play it all. OK, it’s the political season. I love the opening line to this song. It’s all about it being OK to disagree and not have to talk about it if you do.

12.) East Jabib (live) – REDadmiral
13.) Feel The Bern – Violint Wednesday
14.) This Land Is Your Land – VT artists

I love the version of the classic song done in honor of Bernie Sanders by a ton of great local musicians. The Bern song has such a nice portrait of life in Burlington. Great song from Admiral. They will be one of the many bands playing at the Monkey House on 4/20. This next artist will be at that show too.

15.) Relax – Joe Adler
16.) Winter Is Over – Apartment 3
17.) Monocacy – Slingshot Dakota
18.) You Took – The Church

Unfortunately, I will miss the Monkey 420 show since on April 20 I will go to the Tupelo Music Hall in New Hampshire and see The Church. They will play all of The Blurred Crusade so I had to play You Took and start the show with Almost With You. I’m so excited. I’m also excited by Slingshot Dakota playing at the Monkey House on May 10. I’m loving their new album Break. Apartment will be at the 420 Monkey show. That’s a pretty cool song. Hmm, I love Joe songs. Let’s keep with the theme, and if this next set makes you want to call your legislators, feel free.

19.) Gettin High – Heavy Plains
20.) Seeds And Stems – The New Siberians
21.) Grandma Betty – Brother Zag
22.) Space Weed Zombies – Wave Of The Future

I love the funky heavy rock of Wave. Great song from one of Burlington’s most obscure singer songwriters. Seeds is from the Siberians first album. Plains are such a great rocking band, especially live. OK, let’s keep rocking.

23.) Poem For Torin/Ethan’s Stoned – Peg Tassey
24.) The Bomb – The Mountain Says No

I may have to head over to Manhattan Pizza after the show and see Mountain. They go on at 11:30. Fantastic song from Peg. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we? Ta ta, farewell, see ya.

25.) Sayonara – Black Rabbit
