Song before: Lying Eyes – The Eagles

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the sounds of music. I missed you last week. I was on vacation and saw and bought a ton of music. Let’s begin with an artist I saw last Thursday at Ruach HaMaqom Synagogue.

1.) Intro/May 2017 – Adrienne Cooper Smith
2.) Oak Tree – The Beerworth Sisters
3.) Stars – The Zii Trees

Trees are so cool. I caught them Thursday at Radio Bean. I saw Julia Beerworth play with Josh Glass a couple of weeks ago and loved her voice and guitar playing. Adrienne rocked the electric banjo at the synagogue. More about the band that headlined the night soon. OK, let’s head over to Robot Dog Studio for an interview and live performance by Ivamae.

4.) Veil – Ivamae
5.) Changes – Ivamae
6.) Underheard – Ivamae
7.) Honey Bee – Ivamae

Wow, she is so amazing. Thanks to Ryan Cohen for making the sound so great and to Phoebe Zorn for the camera work. Check out the video for Underheard on YouTube. OK, so last Thursday the mighty Julia Caesar released their album Heavy Flow at the synagogue. Here is a song from it. There will be more later.

8.) Crimson – Julia Caesar
9.) Like Beads – Anachronist
10.) Pillar Of Truth – Lucy Dacus
11.) Dumb Smile – Clever Girls

Clever and Lucy played amazing shows at ArtsRiot a week ago Sunday. Anachronist played a great version of that one the Friday before at the Tarrant Gallery by The Flynn. Julia are just amazing. OK, this next artist visited town once and then morphed into a new band. I’m hoping for a return trip soon.

12.) Veratrum – Piqued
13.) Frosty Pink skies – Miku Daza
14.) Ego – When Particles Collide
15.) Falter – Julia Caesar

Yet another great Julia song. Particles could be anywhere. I thought that song would fit well in that set. Cool song from Miku’s album It’s A Fairy Tale, and a lovely song form Piqued. This next artist is lighting Vermont media on fire with their tour to support local libraries.

16.) Enemy – David Rosane & The Zookeepers
17.) L Ron Hubbard – Humble Hero
18.) Sugar Rush – Miku Daza
19.) Nothing Important – Doom Service

That’s the next song from the album I’m playing all the way through, song after song, week after week. I love the cosmic nature of that one. Cool song from Miku that we recorded a few weeks back at Robot Dog Studio. Humble finally released that song that is so fun, so I had to get it on the air. Great song from David. OK, let’s keep rocking.

20.) Earthquake – ROUGH FRANCIS
21.) Another Day Closer To Nothing – Grand
22.) F*ck the Alt-Right – Tetsuo
23.) Brave Coward – Green Chapel
24.) Sonic Boom – Bee Bee Sea

BBS came over from Italy and played a show at The Monkey House that I’m still reeling from. Chapel, Tetsou, and Grand played a killer show at Nectar’s a week ago Monday and all of those songs were played. Great new song from Francis! OK, let’s ease up a bit and jam out.

25.) Sideways – Binger
26.) Love In The Afternoon – The Thursday Torys
27.) Hear Me Now – Julia Caesar
28.) Julius Caesar – The New Siberians

I just had to do the Julia Julius thing. I caught a couple of songs from Brayden Patrick Baird from the Torys last Friday. Binger are everywhere but will come back to us soon.

Well, I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

The Voyeur (I Like To Watch) – Fish

I had a great time seeing music Friday at Robot Dog Studio and the Amy E. Tarrant Gallery, which is part of the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts.

We’ve always done the live from Robot Dog sessions in the evening but the timing worked out for an afternoon show. We gathered around 2pm and Ryan Cohen dialed in the sound. Ivamae played four songs that were so enchanting it was a struggle to hold on to enough concentration to be ready to ask her questions as each song found it’s conclusion. Phoebe Zorn helped Ryan with the video and I can’t wait to see and hear the results.

I grabbed a bite to eat then headed home. I did a quick turnaround then quickly walked downtown. The show at the gallery said 6pm and I sailed in about 6:05. The band was not on so I took a breath and ran into Phil Yates. We chatted as a DJ spun songs from The Gun Club, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Blue Button, Alex Chilton, and lots of others.

Anachronist pic by Tim Lewis

A little after 7, Anachronist took the stage. They opened with a couple of new songs that featured their jangly rock that takes fun twists and hits many sweet notes. One was about doing it all. The third song had a tag line of don’t come back again and featured some blistering Brian Clark guitar work. Chris Brokaw joined them for a song about true love that was gorgeous. At that point Anachronist left the stage and Chris sang a song about wanting still to decide. His songs were mellow and strong and slow and enchanting. The next one had that sweet flow to it, until the end when he unleashed some lovely guitar noise. He had nothing but time on the next one then followed with an instrumental cover that I should have been able to spot, but did not, and enjoyed it nonetheless. He played a song from an upcoming album that may be called Trademarks and I think the song was about the end of night. He played another cool instrumental then a song about a joke where no one laughs and the night having no eyes. He played another nice instrumental then one about blasting through black holes. He closed the set with a short and super fun song about Benny Forjones (?) that made everyone smile.

He left the stage and Anachronist returned. The first two songs kept my heart in a happy place as Phil Carr’s powerhouse drumming and Mike Donofrio‘s melodic bass locked the songs in. They sang about what it’s going to take to get it together again then dropped a heavenly version of Like Beads on us. The next song was new and almost political and was dedicated to the nurses who were on strike and holding a rally across the street in City Hall park. They closed with a pair of songs where the first one was short and exciting, much like singer Angela Paladino, that the other was longer. It was about a gambler from out of state, and let Brian loose for a killer guitar solo at the end. It had been ages since I had seen them and I loved every note.

I chatted with Sean Toohey for a bit then took the lovely walk home.

Anachronist with Chris Brokaw

I got a bit of a thirst on the way home and ducked into Radio Bean and a gentleman named Ben Clark was on stage. His voice was strong and melodic and his guitar playing was nice. He sang Wichita Lineman and Goodbye Yellow Brook Road as I settled in to listen. He played the last song of the old world, the title song for his album Hallucinate, and closed with something called No Idea. It was well worth the stop.

I then took the lovely walk home and collapsed on the couch in a happy place. I’m so lucky to have so much great music around me all the time.

6.) The Summer Of Andy – The Cancer Conspiracy
7.) Immigrant Trio – Soule Monde (Ray Paczkowski & Russ Lawton)

Great song by a band who specialize in speaking about hard feelings and who wrap their words in beautiful melodies. Cool surf mashup from the Breaks. I’ll start a new album to play all the way through in a couple of weeks. This next band just released a great new album. Here are a few songs.

Swale 016

Tonight’s local music radio show will run from 9-11pm US Eastern Time Thursday September 14. It can be streamed from the WBKM Facebook page and will go as follows.

Song before: Fireworks – The Tragically Hip

intro

From our small city to the great big world, these are the Sounds Of Burlington. My heart goes out to the people of Florida. Please help out if you can. I want to thank Higher Ground for sponsoring the show. They will bring the giant GPN festival to the waterfront this weekend. Let’s begin tonight with a couple of bands who played at The Monkey House last night.

1.) Taung Child – The Dead Shakers
2.) Echoes On – Cones
3.) Unveiled – Pours
4.) Bidets And Confused – Sad Turtle

Turtle play cool instrumentals with Seinfeld references and are always fun. It was cool to see Chris Shar of Pours at the Landlady show last week but was even cooler to hear him play drums with the Shakers. Cones are from Los Angeles and we are so lucky to live in a town where they can just come and play on a Wednesday night. The Shakers haven’t recorded their full psychedelic sound yet but Child hints at it. More about that in a couple of weeks. OK, it’s time to play the last song on Loose Tooth and I will have to pick a new album to play all the way through, song after song, week after week.

5.) We Tried – Clever Girls
6.) I Like Flowers And I’m Not Afraid To Say It – Peg Tassey MUSIC
7.) Automatic Sweetheart – Hammydown
8.) Day Of The Dead – Hana Zara

Hana just successfully funded her new album with a Kickstarter campaign and I can’t wait to hear it. It was cool to see Abbie Gail from Hammydown play with Caroline Rose at the Madaila on Main show recently. I got to go to Ottawa and see the mosaiculture and to go to Montreal to see the botanical gardens this week so the Peg song jumped to mind. Great song and EP from Clever Girls. I”m sure they will have something new soon since they have lots of songs in their set that are not recorded yet. Last Saturday I saw a few classic bands at Higher Ground and one who have been playing around but I had just not seen. Here is one of their songs.

9.) Co2U Later – The Tsunamibots
10.) Projector – Vetica
11.) Despite The Rain – Starlight Conspiracy
12.) Nowhere Feels Like Home – Fire The Cannons

Cannons played in the early 00’s and rocked us hard. Starlight were a cool ’90’s band. Vetica played some great shows in the 10’s and the Tsunamibots are putting on fantastic shows now. OK, let’s reach even further back into Burlington’s past.

13.) Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights) – The N-Zones
14.) Paint It Black – Silver Bridget
15.) Breathe – Ninja Custodian
16.) Cowgirl In The Sand – Real Old and Insane Donkey

That was a band that Seth Yacovone put together to play some Neil Young songs. Ninja used to play cool covers back in the late ’80’s at Nectar’s and other places. Bridget played last Saturday and are playing the next couple of Saturday’s at Nectar’s. N-Zones played back in the early ’80’s or late ’70’s. Burlington has a lot of great original music but we do like covers too. OK, this next band will make a rare appearance in town at Light Club Lamp Shop tomorrow at 7:30.

17.) Northern Skies – The Lindbergh Baby
18.) Say It – Anachronist
19.) A Company Man – Carraway
20.) Drug Laws – SWALE

I love the way that song continuously rocks. Such a fun song from Carraway. Great songs form Anachronist and Lindbergh. So, last Friday there were a bunch of cool bands who played at the Art Hop but heavy rain wiped out most of the outside shows. This band saw a break in the weather, got set up and began to play as the rain came back. This was the only song of their set and they are such troopers for even playing that one.

21.) The Original Original – Black Rabbit
22.) Good Times – Grand
23.) Shark – Greaseface
24.) Blank Daze – Mr. Doubtfire
25.) Blue Lights – Sink or Swim

Sink will play a show this Saturday. Ask them for the detains since it’s an underground show. Doubtfire and Grand played a great show at Radio Bean Monday night. Grease are playing at the Monkey House on Saturday. OK, let’s keep rocking.

26.) By Design – The Nancy Druids
27.) The Great Forgetter – The New Siberians
28.) Small Town Movie – The Cush
29.) Song About The Ocean – Dino Bravo VT

Those are four of many the great songs to come out of the Burlington scene. I hope you enjoyed checking out the music of our town. Let’s do it again next week, shall we?

15.) All Down Tonight – Swale
16.) The Process – Pinhead
