I had a great time seeing music Wednesday at Radio Bean. I got out of work at 5:30 and had plenty of time to settle and eat dinner before taking the lovely walk downtown. I got in and chatted with Frank DeAngelis for a bit, then Ouzkxqlzn began to weave her magical spell. She began with a droning sound and used a wrench on the guitar stings to evoke a quiet shriek. She looped in a quiet voice and notes from her cello then moved to the floor to work the many sound inputs into a lovely flow. She added some ambient guitar as a voice came through and spoke of how there’s no way they can reunite the children who were separated from their parents at the border. She moved to the guitar and it sounded like a more normal song structure might appear then moved to the cello to add in more loops to the ever evolving flow. She sang quietly and heavenly for a few moments then something coalesced into what sounded like a radio show. Music with a hint of happy days appeared as she added flourishes with the guitar then a voice spoke about being asymmetrical like a mouse and an owl. She moved to cello as a woman’s voice told a story of being beaten and seeing stars like in Donald Duck. I’m here, I’m not here a voice spoke as Lauren Costello gently played guitar. The feeling like it was a radio show returned as a slowed down version of Happiness Is A Warm gun floated to the top of the drone. She picked up a pebble and rubbed it against the ribbed ceramic bowl to add another texture to the flow. She threw pebbles into the bowl like she was throwing dice then moved back to the wrench on the guitar for more of the Beatles as they needed their fix as they were going down. The flow continued as she moved to the cello and played sweetly to end the show. She is always stunning.

I had plenty of time, so I hung out to check out whomever was coming on next. They said they were called Mica and The One Night Club Band and were from Argentina. They had a nice relaxed Latin jazz vibe. Mica has a sweet voice and lots of stage presence. Most of the lyrics were in Spanish but I enjoyed the sound. They sang songs of love and being happy and were just lovely. They had the small but mighty audience clap along to a couple of songs, and I quickly realized that when they did this, the bass player was about to move the song into a cool unexpected direction. They sang a song about how if you kiss me, I’ll give you the moon and closed with one about being in the moment and being happy. It rocked a little extra hard and I joyfully followed their advice. I’m so glad I stuck around.

I left shortly after the final notes rang out and took the lovely walk home.
